Russell is extremely knowledgeable and takes the time to educate on the 4 C's so you know that to look for in a diamond. In that area I am pleased but when it came to my setting he just gave us a book and said which setting do you want? Didn't help what so ever and so we just went with the basic one that he grabs the diamond with to show it in your finger because from a picture we don't know nor did he tell us that with the band he was ordering would not fit a flat wedding band. And it would not fit flush against it so now we either have to get a whole new setting for $800-$1500 and wasted $800 already on the setting it's in now and also had to pay extra for a basket due to the cushion cut. I don't care for the wedding bands with the curves but that's really the only choice I have unless we change the whole setting or notch the prong in which I would be sacred of the stability after that. I also don't like how the band is a knife angle. Overall really disappointed in the setting, I wish we just bought the diamond from him and went else where to get the setting. read more

Since my last review, I've visited TDS on numerous occasions, all for one thing - ring cleaning! Sunscreen, sand, doggy shampoo, car wax, you name it - my ring has been exposed to it! My rings take a beating, which necessitates visits to TDS at least twice a year for a professional cleaning and polishing. I bought several different jewelry for gifts, sold some jewelry, and custom made jewelry as well here. Russell educates you about jewelry especially diamonds. We met Russell back in '06 at one of the Bridal expos. He was very pleasant to do business with, not pushy and took time to educate us on diamonds. He can make custom designs to fit anyone's needs. Once you decide what kind of diamond/stone you want and budget, he gave us a list of diamonds slightly above and below our range so we could decide. When you get your diamond he also gives you the diamond rating which is important to have. Then we worked on the setting, the material/metal wanted and design of it. He had a wax mold made up so we could see how the ring would look like before committing to it with no pressure of buying and chance to change the design. He offers FREE cleanings and encourages you to come back regularly for cleaning. They are a local company run by local people, so they will treat you right. Sitting in the store you see a wall of pictures of previous satisfied customers. Whenever I am asked where to buy jewelry, I always refer them to Russell and staff. They also buy jewelry although I have not sold any. Their prices on gold are competitive and heard of a person getting $400 more than what another well advertised store had offered for the same items. So, We're back. Russel has always taken good care of us. Back in 2013, our home was burglarized in broad daylight. The thieves got away with virtually all my wife's jewelry, including a very sentimental ring I bought for her when we first got married. The only thing they didn't get was her wedding ring. I guess we should count our blessings there. So we stopped in to have the wedding ring cleaned (which you should do annually, so they Can check the setting and the stone. On the list of to do's was resize the ring since it was getting a little tight. Russel verifies the stone is the same as what was there when we purchased the ring, then it's a week wait to do the resize. Because in this case it was three bands soldered together it was a little more complicated to resize. Not a problem... While there we were browsing my wife saw a ring similar to the one that was stolen. We scrolled through catalogs to find what we wanted, a setting that held five staggered Marquis stones. We had to wait the week for the estimate, pricing stones and setting, etc., and we had to wait for the ring to be resized, but with precious metals prices what they are now, the ring was out of budget. ( For the moment) But when we came to pick up her resized ring, I saw a nice small five stone ring and pointed it out. It had heart shaped stones and fit our budget so it came home with us too! I strongly recommend before going to the "fo sho" places such as: the wedding ring shop, ben bridge, tiffany's, Harry Winston, and the list goes on, SEE RUSSELL. He will personally take the time to sit down and educate you not only on the 4C's of diamonds, but the ins and outs of the diamond business. He shares about how some places, the way they display their diamonds makes a big difference, but at the end, a slight color better or a slight clarity better could end up costing you thousands of dollars more and can't even be differentiated to the naked eye for clarity or unless compared to side-by-side for color and carat. He even says some people purchase diamonds online and ask him to set them. He has to break the news and say, it is a CZ buddy. He even provides hands-on displays where you can look under the microscope, look at a diamond color grading machine, and he even has the same doo hickey that the wedding ring shop provides that you can see their famous "hearts on fire" diamond. All it is is a marketing thing for an ideal cut, because russell can do the same, just his is called hearts and arrows. There is no obligation to buy something, just call set up a time to sit down, you will certainly come out feeling at ease when searching for that perfect stone. Upon recommendation from a friend I was able to find this very small tucked away shop on the top floor of Kahala mall and the jeweler there spent over an hour educating us on diamonds (all the aspects that make for a better diamond). They taught us long before we looked into buying anything. In fact we left and didn't come back to buy after looking at 4 other jewelers and rechecking what we had learned through net research. I am in the market for a luxury timepiece. I begin my research online like many of us do and start looking in the local market for venues or private owners who may be selling their watches. So, it's 12AM and I come across The Diamond Specialists website and directly on the homepage there are 25+ watches listed for sale. I find a couple timepieces on their site that I'm impressed with and decide to go to Kahala in the morning to see their inventory in person. I get there around 10-11AM and they buzz me in. I ask them about the timepieces and they tell me, "Oh, we used to, but we don't anymore." When I mention that I saw them on their website, a lady chimes in and says, "We should probably take those down." I will admit that when I checked their site 3 days later, they did remove those watch listings. Call me "old fashioned" but if you're going to advertise something on your website, I anticipate that you will keep it current. 2 stars - "Meh, I've experienced better." This is the first place I went to look for a diamond, and really, it was also the last place that I needed to go. The experience was a hundred times better than I had been expecting. Russell gave me an hour-long lesson on how to pick a good diamond, even though I was just a walk-in (though I do recommend you make an appointment, since it's a small shop). My fiancé and I came here yesterday to have my diamond engagement ring inspected. I had left it somewhere overnight, but gotten it resized elsewhere. The shop where I resized my ring mentioned that the laser inscription in the diamond was not on our paperwork. We were a little worried about that, so I emailed Russell about this, and he responded in a few hours that we could stop by free-of-charge if we called to set up an appointment. My fiancé called to set up an appointment, and we were able to stop by on the same day. Russell quickly informed us that we only had the appraisal information, and that the certificate might have the laser inscription information. He entered our report number and printed out the certificate, and sure enough, the number in the diamond matched the number on the certificate! We felt so relieved! He even took the time to show my fiancé the inscription. We also looked around at the wedding bands, and they had a nice selection with the option of ordering additional styles. They even had engagement rings on-site! Russell showed us a few wedding bands, and explained the pros/cons of the different metals/styles. Overall, I had an extremely pleasant experience from the time that I had initially emailed Russell to when we left the shop. The attention to detail is flawless and we got exactly what we were looking for which is pretty difficult since we designed the ring from scratch. The other jewelry stores we visited previously, were very pushy and kept trying to get us to buy right then and there. But Russell gave us time to think it over and even time to get our funds straightened out before making the purchase. He was very understanding and patient. If it were possible to give a -100 star review, I would! The old lady that greeted us-if you want to call it a greeting-was extremely rude, condescending and impatient. She didn't want to let us explain what we were looking for and started gesturing with hand motions to hurry it up and say what we needed. I guess apparently we were wasting her time. After seeing her react that way towards us, I quickly told my boyfriend, "Let's go somewhere else, I don't want to be here." What makes it worse was the owner, Russell, was present and watching our conversation with the old lady and how rude she was being and did nothing about it. This place was a family recommendation. We had called previous to showing up less than an hour later and had explained over the phone that a cousin had recommended seeing Russell and we were calling to make sure he was in before heading over, yet that made no difference, we were still treated rudely. Hey, to give them credit, at least they are rude and impersonal to everyone equally! Shopping for a symbol of everlasting love should be an enjoyable experience and this was the exact opposite. We feel people who deal with potential customers should be professional, pleasant and kind as we have experienced this at other businesses and appreciate their outstanding customer service. You would think that being around so long, this company would know that great customer service is important. Unfortunately it seems that being in Kahala and serving customers willing to put up with horrible service while still spending money, has not taught them any good customer service skills. read more

I am the proud owner of an engagement ring designed and made by Russell :) My wonderful fiance and I went and saw him to learn more about diamonds after reading all the reviews on Yelp. We had been talking for a while about getting engaged and had looked at rings almost everywhere. I found a ring I loved at another store and we were actually going to get that ring, but were thinking of buying the center stone for the setting from Russell. We stopped in to make an appointment, and Russell had another couple that was just sitting down to get their "diamond education". His assistant was nice enough to ask if we could join in and the couple was nice enough to agree. I liked that they were so accomodating. After learning everything there is to know about diamonds we were very impressed by the thorough, calm, and patient way in which Russell explained everything. We felt that we could trust him b/c he took the time to educate us on our investment, and that was very important to us. The difference between the experience there and the experience we had at other jewelry retailers was like night and day - and he wasn't even trying to sell us anything!! To take that much time with each customer, without even pushing for or having a guarantee of a sale shows that they run their business so much differently and more personally than the flashy brand-name places. My fiance decided secretly to have Russell make the ring that I wanted instead of buying it for more just because it was a well known brand. This way he could get a bigger and better rock! :) It also let him really be hands on with the whole experience and get to feel like he was involved every step of the way. He snuck around for several months emailing back and forth with Russell to ensure the mock-ups and drawings for my ring were perfect. They selected the most gorgeous center stone for my ring, and people always comment on the beauty of the cut and how sparkly it is. I know my fiance was able to make the very best selection in the stone b/c of the things he learned from Russell about diamonds. I love my engagement ring and my soon-to-be husband is so proud to see it on my finger everyday. We recently had it appraised as well for more than we paid for it which is always a nice plus! I am looking forward to going in to have it cleaned so I can thank Russell and his staff in person! read more
