Last night, my family and I decided to try the Dillard House for dinner. Unfortunately, we didn't get the experience we were looking for. I called the restaurant to see what's the latest we could come in to eat was . She said as long as we were there by 7:40, we would happily be served. However, we arrived at the restaurant at 7:15. The hostess asked us to please wait. As, we were waiting, one of the waitress standing to the side stated, " I can't stand when people freaking come in at the last minute and want to eat." As another employee said, "just tell them we are already closed." (May I remind you we were there 45min prior to closing.) We decided to leave, since we were obviously not wanted there by the employees. My rating as a one star is solely on the service of the employees. I would recommend spending your money on a restaurant that is happy to serve you:) read more

Haven't been here in about 10 years. The food is no longer good. Greasy, flavorless chicken. I asked for dark meat and got a chicken leg. I asked 3 times for a thigh. The portions here are huge! They basically bring everything on the menu to the table and you can try everything for around $25. It is southern food so expect high calorie. We had fried chicken, ribs, country fried steak, country ham, cabbage casserole, squash casserole, collards, mashed potatoes, black eyed peas, and fried okra. My favorites were the chicken, ham and fried okra. Be warned, the ham is salty but I love it! For dessert there was apple crisp and ice cream. Pretty tasty. Service was good. They were friendly and bought new plates of food each time we asked for more. They also let you take home leftovers which seemed crazy for an all-you-can-eat place. Pretty nice if you want to take some fried chicken home. Glad they are wasting as little as possible. The property has a farm to see horses, goats, chickens, etc for the kids. If you are looking for a variety of food you will be pleased. My husband and I stopped here for dinner on our way home from a weekend in the mountains with some friends. We were pretty hungry when we arrived and were happy to see the food coming! I love having a lot of choices and tasting a little bit of everything, although it does look ridiculous with that much food on the table for only two! We have been here before and don't remember it being quite that good. Not sure if we were really hungry or if it was just really good! We did really enjoy ourselves. After an amazing time horseback riding, we figured lunch would be great too. After standing at the entrance for a minute, and multiple employees glancing at me, we were sat. After sitting at the table for 5 minutes with no menu, I was really considering leaving. My boyfriend waived down an employee who said "the menu is outside" & someone would be right over. I left my date and pretended to use the restroom when I saw the sign out front, down the hall from the restaurant..... I don't like any of this food... and it'll be $40 for us, great :/. I come back to the table and inform my date. When I sat back down, someone came over after with 10 different bowls of food. Too late for us to do anything... It was tasteless.. Bland. We didn't want to be rude so we got a box and put everything in one. I still don't know any employees names, or who my server is.... but we are ignored the whole time so I ask about dessert mentioned outside, and the employee says "I don't know yet". A few more minutes we ask again and s few minutes later we received a strawberry dessert with gooey soft serve vanilla ice cream overtop. Dessert is usually something I can always enjoy... after one bite I was over it. I have been in the servings industry for 8 years, and treat my customers as the valuable people who make up my paycheck.. The way I was treated as a customer was ridiculous. No "Welcome! How are you today? Have you been here before?" I would have loved to been informed about this "all in one - can't choose what you like" kind of meal. I've watched this place decline over the years and I'm sad to say that I don't really care if I ever go back. Somebody in a previous review mentioned "quantity over quality" and I think that pretty much sums up the Dillard House experience. I've NEVER tasted greens that were sweet until the last time I ate here. Greens just shouldn't have an overwhelming sweet taste at all. However, I noticed a lot of the vegetables were over-the-top with the sugar. The butternut squash would be so much better if I could at least taste the squash instead of the sugar. As another Yelper aptly stated "prepared with no love". I couldn't agree more. Some of the items that hit the table were OK. Nothing stood out as very good let alone excellent. Service is usually efficient but not very personable. The dining room carpet looked and smelled old and musty. The age is starting to show on this dining room and it really isn't a very friendly dining room. The ribs, which I used to love at the long gone Dillard Jr., are a disgrace to ribs. They barely have any meat on them and they have been cooked to the point that they have no moisture or succulence whatsoever. Lastly, the dessert is complete garbage. It's nothing more than a bowl of slop that may or may not be topped with a "cobbler" topping. The bowl of slop was topped with cheap soft serve ice cream that was soup when it was placed on the table. This place needs a major overhaul for interior and somebody with some knowledge and love with cooking southern staples needs to get control of the menu. I recently had the opportunity to visit this past weekend. While I can't say the food is anything to write home about, I can definitely say that the concept, view, and desserts are phenomenal! Once we arrived in the building where the main dining room is located, we received a ticket that had a number on it, which is what was called when our table was ready. While waiting, I took the opportunity to venture into the store where there was a surplus of local goods from hand bags and jewelry to flavor infused sea salt and homemade peach jam. It took everything in me to not buy everything in sight. When our table was ready our server sat us close by a few large windows. The view is just amazing - I could imagine how wonderful it would be during the fall season! After a bit, we were provided with our meal options. Since it was our first time there, we were not sure how the process worked. After being provided an explanation, I can say it's basically a buffet brought to your table. More sanitary if you ask me! Our server brought us a basket of homemade bread, fried chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes, creamed corn, cabbage casserole, some sort of squash casserole and an onion type casserole. I'm sure I'm missing something but just know you won't leave hungry. For dessert, we all chose the strawberry cobbler (AMAZING) and I tried the buttermilk pie since I've heard of how good it was but never tried it (AMAZING)! The Dillard House has been a family favorite since it opened (although admittedly it was my great great grandmother who ate here first.) Now, I am thrilled they made it through covid and certainly some things have changed. We had the delicious fish and chicken- great. Broccoli casserole and cabbage casserole and Mac and cheese also awesome. The vegetables are fresh and it is a family serving option where you pass plates. It is still the best food like this anywhere so it deserves 5 stars even though compared to itself about 5 years a go- there were a few things we missed. Folks who haven't eaten here there whole lives wouldn't miss the delicious cornbread of yesteryear - the current recipe isn't quite as delicious. I also missed the jelly or apple or peach butter on the table they used to have. I saw some reviews without as great service and I am not sure on that but our service is great. Now, it is expensive and if I have to pick - breakfast here is by far my fave with pork tenderloin. It is great to save up and eat here once or maybe a lunch and a breakfast if you are up here for a week. Love the Dillard house! read more

Excellent but you should fast for a day or so before going so you can enjoy it all! We had a large party of about 18 people and it was great to sit and immediately have the food at your table. The food was EXCELLENT!!! I bought one of their cookbooks and have even tried a few of their recipes at home with great success. I had been many years prior and we were staying about 2 1/2 hrs away and I got the entire family to go. After the long drive my father-in-law told me it better be worth the drive just for a dinner. I last visited the Dillard House over 20 years ago and I had fond memories of tasty, wonderful food and welcoming service. Sadly, this establishment has not been able to maintain that level of service, or quality of food. We were a party of 7 and were crammed into a table big enough for 4-5. That doesn't work with family style food where there are plates everywhere. We had to have a tray table next to our table just to have a place for our plates. Look, lots of food isn't a problem- but there were plenty of larger tables available. We asked for a larger table (half of the dining room was empty), and were told those tables weren't open and were also told a party of 8 was given a slightly larger table, so this is the norm. Well, 10 minutes later- the larger tables/section was open and started to seat people. Our waitress was non existent, not bringing drinks when asked, or more food when requested. This is a family style restaurant and refills are supposed to be brought (reflective of the high price you pay). By the way, drinks aren't included in the price- so add another $2.95 to the $21.95. Most of the food was bland and boring, I would guess they stopped making food in-house years ago and there are now large can openers in the kitchen. Getting the bill was a chore and the entire experience was t enjoyable. Sad to see such a great place go downhill- but it happens with so many businesses. This will be our last trip there. read more

I have genetically spliced the double-helix of a fried pork chop with that of my roommate, Randall!" -- Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Season 2, Episode 1 Finally, marked something major off my bucket list. I have been wanting to come here for ages and ages and then Alton Brown sealed the deal for me when he mentioned it on The Best Thing I Ever Ate and talked about the Country Ham being "about as salty as salty gets and still good" - welp, the man is spot on! When we planned a cabin weekend that happened to be in Dillard, I knew we had to go for dinner one night. As we drove into town, it was just after 7pm (they close at 8pm) and we walked in as a party of 4 and were told to wait. About 10 minutes later they called our number to go to the dining room. The dining room only had about 4 seated tables - the rest of the place was empty. So unsure of why there was a delay at all, but it was worth the wait. We sat and our waitress, who was a bit ornery, asked what we wanted to drink and walked away. Shortly after, we had our mason jars with teas and waters and then the food came out. Bowl after bowl of sides were placed on our table and then the entrees were set down. The basket of breads was kind of empty, so we asked for more and they brought us a heaping basket. We had green beans, glazed carrots (too sweet), sweet potatoes, scalloped potatoes, fried okra (yum), corn on the cobb, fried pork chops, fried chicken and (upon request only) country ham. The breads were yeast rolls and cornbread mini muffins. Other items on the menu that never came to our table were the broccoli with cheese, cabbage casserole, calico salad and coleslaw. The food was hit or miss - the hits were awesome. We got extra fried pork chops and okra and ate it all. The only thing we took home (every diner can take 1 to go box) was the leftover bread. The fried pork chops were the best and tasted just like my Granny's and I needed some mashed potatoes to put that gravy on and I would have been back in her kitchen in Louisville, Kentucky. It reminded me how much I miss her. I'll come back again, mostly for more pork chops if I can plan it that way. But also, for that family style experience. Worth the $22.50. read more

We ate here for lunch on a weekend. Customer service was great. Prices are okay. Decent for the amount of food you get. A little bit much for the quality of food you get. This place is like a buffet, but southern style. They have a set menu and they bring a bit of everything on it to your table. If you run out of something and want more, just ask! The food was plentiful! There was several meats, a bunch veggies and a variety of bread options. We ate through several of the dishes and refill were brought out within minutes. And they even let you take anything that was left on the table with you without any additional cost. Definitely a positive there! My only issue is that there was nothing they brought out that was over the top good. 3 meat options and about 10 sides and nothing was above average in taste. It definitely didn't live up to some of the hype that I've seen about it. Walk in for breakfast to just grab a to go plate. There's no signage anywhere about what to do other than "please proceed to the dinning room and wait to be seated". So that's exactly what I do to see about my to go plate. I ask about getting a plate to go and the three people standing there at the dinning room all look at me like they have no clue as to what I just asked. It's like I was speaking a different language. One mumbled around trying to answer and then one finally spoke up and said the front desk. I was to the front desk and no one is there. I finally walk over to where it says "reservations" and find I'm supposed to order food there. Completely confusing! Sunday morning staff no way as near as good as the lunch staff on Saturday! My family and I stopped by yesterday morning for breakfast on our way to Asheville from Atlanta. We've eaten here several times (I've been coming here since I was a kid) over the past few years. The food and service isn't as good as it used to be. Our server came to our table shortly after we were sat, took our orders and seemed to disappear after she brought our drinks. We didn't receive any refills and she never checked on us to see if we needed anything. The food was ok. Our bacon was cold, the gravy needed some spice, and sausages were somewhat lukewarm. I've been to the Dillard House many times in the past twenty years. My children, now all in their twenties, grew up eating there on the way to our home in Highlands, NC. We have fond family memories of riding the stable horses before a hearty meal. Sadly, on a recent visit, we were forced to reevaluate our opinions about the simple country fare the Dillard House serves daily. I read a recent review that suggested the food had simply been rewarmed rather than cooked fresh. It was observed that, in spite of charging over $20 per person, the initial offering of chicken and other proteins was skimpy at best. This was our recent experience as well. Vegetables were clearly reheated and the rolls were stale. We will not be returning to this family-owned restaurant in spite of our fond family memories. The Dillard House has been on my "to-do" list for many years. I was very excited to book a few nights at the end of a camping trip in the area. This is a mixed review of their food and their accommodations. First, the food! We ate dinner there and the food was amazing. I was quite worried about it from all the recent negative reviews here on Yelp, but I was very happy with what we were served. Service - and this is for the entire stay - was odd. The staff seemed muted, almost not happy to be there. This was everyone, from our server to the lady I spoke to making a reservation, to the registration desk to the gift shop staff - everyone was hard to get a smile out of and looked miserable. Our stay - We stayed in their "Chalet" #1 - recently renovated, they said. You could see what was new and was wasn't, but that was okay. The house seemed clean enough. Odd things though: - They provide soap, but no shampoo - isn't that a hotel accommodation norm? - Coffee maker, but no filters (we brought our own coffee) - Fireplace with wood and outdoor fire pit with wood, but just a stick lighter - no starter (newspaper, starter log, etc)? - The house was infested with ladybugs. Sounds pleasant enough, but not at that quantity! Cable was out when we got there, but I didn't care. Came on a few hours later, but then the cable guy showed up asking to check our cable - then half the channels disappeared an hour later. We also had visits from the general public as there was an auction going on for the units and our chalet was a prior office for these auctions. Furthermore, the central AC/Heater froze up and was useless. We had just been camping the 4 prior nights, so we were used to the cold (and had all the supplies the chalet lacked). When I went to check out, a guy in front of me complained about the cleanliness of his room and a sliding door that would not lock - and they offered him free breakfast and a discount to his room. His complaints appear in-line with what I have been reading recently online. When it was my turn, I listed much of the above, I got a "Sorry about that" - but I wasn't wanting anything in return, just someone to fix it for the next person - the gal didn't even take notes. I list them here in this review so hopefully someone will take notice. We won't be back for a stay - maybe for dinner, but even then, with the reviews here, I think scored a lucky meal. read more

Where to begin.... The place itself is gorgeous! The mountain views are to beautiful and the grounds are very pretty and clean cut. My family (18 of us total) decided to vacation here for my grandmothers 75th birthday. We stayed in the chalets. All 3 homes were very cozy and adorable. The views from each house were so different and beautiful. The biggest down fall... The drive getting to the house!! Make sure you have a 4x4 if staying in the chalets!!! It's a must have and should be a must for the The Dillard House to inform its guest on. We drove a 2013 ford focus (thank god it's a rental) and going up on a steep incline the car lost traction and started sliding backwards off the road! The road itself is all gravel and dirt and not pack down good in some spots. It's also very narrow and difficult for cars to pass each other. SO BE CAREFUL! Also our chalet was a bit outdated and moldy. The floors were super squeaky and so were the doors. There seemed to be a electrical issue as well. Our oven kept turning itself on and off during our entire stay, as well as two touch lamps. It was actually kind of creepy! And don't forget to check your fireplace before starting a fire! It was pretty obvious that some people weren't aware that the flue was closed. The stone around the fireplace was black from where the smoke wasn't escaping properly and entering back into the actual house. Our second day, my fiancé and I decided to go on the hour long river horseback ride. It was beautiful and fun. However for an experienced rider, was a little boring since you have to ride single file. And a word of advice, be honest with the guides, if you aren't experienced TELL THEM! The assumed since I was experienced that my fiancé was... They put him on a very moody mare who liked the start fights with the horses in from of her (which happened to be mine). By no means should this keep you from riding. Just remember, your on a live animal with emotions! If you have no experience and tell them they WILL put you on a very calm trail horse :) As far as dinner at The Dillard House.... Well, the food was pretty good. They bring it out family style which is great for a large group. However some of the food was a bit cold or it was either overly salty or under seasoned. The prime rib was awesome! The cream corn was crazy good! They are pretty snappy with bringing more food out when the notice it's gone. The problem with dinner was at the end, at check out. We wanted to split our bill 3 ways. We were told before being seated that they could do that at the register. However, at the register, it was a completely different story! The girls were incredible rude and snotty! They refused to split the check or even try to accommodate us. Customer service was definitely not a word in their dictionary. I do understand that they are very busy and have huge crowds that need to be moved quickly, but they should still be accommodating and friendly. So overall, I give The Dillard House a 3 out of 5 stars which is pretty good. If the staff was more friendly I would have given them a 4! Also, they really do need to inform guest staying at the chalets how steep and narrow the road getting to them is. If you stay here I hope you enjoy! Nestled off the main road with a spectacular view of the mountains sits the old Dillard House restaurant. I'd often heard about it from relatives and my parent's old friends about how good this place was, but never really got to experience it. So upon a trip toward Highlands my half-sister decided to take us by. Dillard House is similar to a Cracker Barrel, ole timey atmosphere, gift shop in front chocked full of various mountain knick knacks and treats, wood decor, and very open dining room as if you are walking into an old house. The serving style is no menu, all seasonal or whatever the chef has decided to prepare, and in a nutshell, an American family dining experience. We came in on a Tuesday afternoon around lunch, whereas I was told the dinner service is typically packed to the walls with long waits especially on the weekends. Service was friendly and personable and the food was good. Our table got a fall squash mix, cabbage casserole, meatloaf, pork chops, fried chicken, sweet potato casserole, slaw, mashed potatoes & gravy, lima beans, fried green tomatoes, rolls & corn bread, and small serving of jam-- and as many refills on any of these items as you wished plus sweet tea in a cute mason style jar. Everything about it was really lovely, so why the three stars? Because it seems time has nipped them around the edges and while I can tell they were worth reckoning with in the past, some of the dishes were just lacking quality even if it's technically a buffet style meal. Meatloaf - extremely dry and seemed old. Definitely not freshly made, probably night before left overs or previous night before stock. Pork chops - 20% pork 80% breading. These looked massive! They were just sopping up gravy that had been pre-poured by the kitchen and inflated to pile of mushy bread.. the pork was somewhere hiding in that mess. Mash & gravy- I actually forgot this was even here after the initial tasting. Was very dry even with gravy. Fall Squash Mix- Probably my favorite thing at the table, but some of the squash and zucchini were under cooked. Flavor was nice. Sweet Potatoes- The most bizarre thing at the table. It didn't taste very "country-style" to me. More a curried flavoring with roasted coconut on top. Although it wasn't bad, it was not meshing well with the other items on the table. The rest were overall enjoyable to superb like the chicken and green tomatoes. Dillard House is one of those places you come in very hungry and leave round and proud. Despite the small hiccups in the food, I'd say it's a touristy thing of the mountains that is worth a one time trip, so why not? read more

I have a wonderful memory of going here with my grandparents as a kid! So of course I had to stop 20 years later to take my boyfriend! I was a bit disappointed because I remember sitting at a long table with people I didn't know and sharing a 'family' meal. That was part of the thrill and the experience of The Dillard House! Well, that apparently no longer exists here- and I am very disappointed! They should definitely bring this back or at least make it an option! The meal is still served family style in large bowls (thank heavens) but when you only have 2 people you feel like you are wasting so much food. As far as the food goes, it was delicious! It's like going over to a friend's house and her mom cooks all her best southern recipes. But beware, you will overstuff yourself! Favorites: Green Beans- great flavor Butter Beans- deeeeelicious Creamed Corn- pretty much ate the whole bowl myself Cucumber & Tomato Salad- incredible Least Favorite: Glazed Carrots- I just wish they weren't sweet! Regular ol' steamed carrots in butter would've been better! Fried Okra- Definitely too much breading- more okra, less fried please :) I also must mention the beautiful view! My husband's colleague recommended we try this place on our way to Gatlinburg. I was a bit hesitant with the mixed reviews I read here, but I decided to go in with an open mind. I'm happy I didn't let the reviews steer us away. THE GOOD: The location is convenient for passerby who want a home style meal moments from the main drag. The service was okay and views are spectacular. Family style service was nice for this indecisive traveler. We liked the fried chicken, although it was a tad over breaded. The smothered cubed steak served in the beautiful all wood interior reminded me of down home at my grandma's. We had 3 reorders of that from the kitchen. That was definitely the star for us. The green beans, broccoli & cabbage casseroles were yummy, also. The dessert of the day was blackberry cobbler; we liked the crust & ice cream, although we're not huge blackberry fans. THE BAD: We were initially seated by a window in the burning sun. Pretty much should've never sat anyone there. We don't care for okra or coleslaw, but they left it on the table anyway...yuck! That's also pretty wasteful. The sweet potato soufflé had coconut on top...WHY ruin it?!? There was an assortment of bread, but it all fell flat. I really just wanted some sweet cornbread muffins. The lemonade my husband ordered was out shined by my lemon water...disappointing. The price was more than I believed it was worth, until we realized that we could carry out our leftovers. Three stars is probably a bit much but the location of the place is lovely. The restaurant has a very laid-back atmosphere with windows overlooking the scenery. There are probably two caveats to this restaurant. The price for the menu is steep. At $22, you would expect to have huge quantities of food. The servings are a bit small and the servers take their time when asking for refills and condiments for the food. It could be better. read more

Not as good as it used to be. Ate Sunday on our way to Biltmore for vacation. Sat on the toliet ( me and my wife) for two days. Also puking grease and sausage. We have ate there for 10 years. Problay will not be back. Due to the rona they don't have the fresh bar. read more

Decided to stop here for dinner with my brother. I remember eating here when I was 16 or so...we had a cross country meet at the local high school, and after the meet our coach took us here for dinner. The high school memory was good, but mostly because we were picking fun at the place....I couldn't remember what the food was like. Bro and I decided it would be an adventure so we drove in without looking at yelp! They asked how many, gave us a ticket and we wandered around for a bit in the store. Probably waited around 10 minutes or so before we got called to sit. They sat us, took our drink order, and then said that we could serve ourselves at the buffet. Food options were mostly fried fish... Catfish, tilapia, shrimp. They had other stuff too like oysters and boiled shrimp and cold salmon. As well as a bit of greens, a few different types of salads and green beans. Overall the food was meh.... Oh and on seafood night crab legs are extra! The food was nothing to write home about.. we had a BLAST picking fun of the AWESOME decor and old has hell plates... and the fact that there were signs everywhere stating that crab was extra! Thought it would be around 20$ a piece.... Nope..... 30$!!! I mean what?????? So we were pretty pissed about that, but we laughed it off paid the bill and chalked it up to a funny story about a crap buffet place. Want a good giggle for 30$? If so this is your place. The food is just okay. It's never clean, food all over the floor. The chairs are so sticky you literally need to wash your hands after pulling the chair out!! We never need to go back there. read more
