They have had a "B" rating for quite some time now. However, we try to support local businesses close to us. The food is decent , but the owner, Maria, is very rude. I think that is her name. We are creatures of habit and order the same menu items each time we come by there. While we have noticed each time we come by the price changes - sometimes higher sometimes lower, but never consistent. Just TWICE in the last two years that we've been going by there, we have questioned her about that issue. Yesterday was the second time and she started screaming at us that she used to appreciate our business, but all we ever do is complain and that she no longer wanted us to come by there. So we will abide by her wishes, but I thought I would give everyone a heads up to check your bill because sometimes it'll be three or four dollars higher or maybe a dollar lower. It is not worth the stress to go here any longer for convenience. I would rather go elsewhere and get decent or even better food. The food is not great. Mashed potatoes were instant and green beans were out of a can. The only good thing was the banana pudding.

The food is fairly good in most items. It's a clean restaurant I like the Valley burger. I can't eat it all. The have some country cooking. You even bring in you trout and they will fry them for you. They do have a bar. But most people just order mixed drink at their dinner table as far as I have ever seen there. But the service is good to fair depending on waitress. And they need a few more for the size of the restaurant. I do recommend it. In Dillard they are one of the better places to eat. read more

Ever since the new owner I have noticed my food is wrong / they are forgetting stuff all the time now . I ordered the country fried steak with mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese and my boyfriend got the chicken strip meal with white gravy . They gave us brown gravy and when I came back the manager was rude and said I dont know stuff about cooking because the gravy appears brown because it's been in the warmer for a while . Ok if it was white gravy and that brown to appear like brown gravy it was burnt then . She said she wasn't going to refund me or make me new food . She said it would be a waste of her money . What about the customer's money the one who keeps you in business . They finally gave me a refund , took the food back and told me to not come back because they would rather lose a customer then change back to the way the old owners ran the restaurant . We stopped here for lunch on a weekday trip. Everything was fresh and homemade, the waitress was pleasant. It was a nice start to a fun trip. On the way back we decided to stop in again as our first visit went well. My friend ordered the wild salmon advertised on the menu, I opted for the trout. The trout was a hearty portion, and well prepared. My friend was not so lucky as her salmon was quite clearly previously frozen. It was very over cooked and looked terrible. When she called the waitress over and told her she wanted the salmon cooked medium the waitress snapped and asked if she had specified that she wanted it cooked medium. She was so rude that we were rendered speechless. Most restaurants know how to cook salmon and most will ask you how you want it prepared. Not this one. The waitress sent the owner ( we assume) over to our table and he was so rude that we thought that we were on the verge of being thrown out. Again, he asked if she had asked for it medium as he abruptly snatched the plate from the table. Again, any decent restaurant will ask how you want it cooked and not assume that you want an overcooked, dried out piece of fish. Ultimately he came back with another order of salmon that looked no better than the first one. At this point she had already shared my trout with me and left the unappetizing salmon untouched on her plate. There was no apology from either the owner or waitress, no apparent interest in correcting a bad situation and the charge was left on the bill for the uneaten and ill-prepared salmon. There are more than a few bad reviews here due to the attitude of the owner and staff rather than the food. Do yourself a favor and find another place to eat. We took a group of 20, in to eat at Valley Cafe, most of which were 12-16 year old youth from our church. I called several days earlier to let them know we were coming. When we got there, even though we were a little early, everything was set up and they seated us right away. We had the nicest waitress that was helpful and showed us a lot of attention. She was absolutely wonderful! Our food was off the chain! I highly recommend the hamburgers, any of them. Everyone who ordered them were completely satisfied. Formerly a bank, converted to a family dining and catering business. Upon entering, guests are greeted warmly; directed to wash their hands in the restrooms. Then they're seated. All staff wore masks. Social distancing enforced. Sanitation of tables and menus. My friends recommended this restaurant. They offer lunch specials in addition to their regular extensive menu. My friends both had 2 piece fried chicken with fries and side. Each under 9.00 I ordered the Crab Cakes Sub. Oh my delicious. Leave room for desserts. We ordered the Lemon Meringue pie, tart, lip smacking delicious (no picture); my friend ordered chocolate turtle cake. Oh boy, portion very generous. Totally recommend. read more

We went into Valley Cafe & Catering to eat lunch on Monday, August 8th. We had eaten here pre-pandemic and it had been pretty good. Today must have been an off day. When you arrive you see a sign that says the menu prices will be adjusted up 10% due to the inflationary economy. So that $10.99 Valley Burger cost $1.10 more or $ 12.09. The Valley Burger is 3/4 of a pound of hamburger. First try, the insides of the burger are so raw that it is still cool and smells like raw meat. Second try, the meat had been thrown into a microwave and had been nuked until it was way over done, had no taste and chewed like rubber. I ate it. My wife said she enjoyed her hamburger. The wait staff was pleasant, her name was Olivia. The manager ( a bald head man who talked really hateful to the wait staff and could be heard out in the dining room ). Both waitresses were upset. I left a tip and left. I come here once a year, but won't be back again. The restaurant had staffing issues it appeared. The pandemic has completely changed the atmosphere of Valley Cafe and Catering... Anyway, that's my review. I'm headed to Dairy Queen instead of eating desert here because of the management ruckus. Some staff can be grumpy but don't let it stop you from a great meal. This is a go to place for locals. Steamed spinach is amazing. Rib Eye was marvelous. We return time and time again. I just love this place, my favorite restaurant in the whole area. They are reasonably priced and have great food options. My favorite is the jalapeño cheddar burger, which I believe is the best burger in town. This burger is just bursting with flavor. Their grilled pork chop is also fantastic, you will not be disappointed Another good option is there shrimp and grits. Owner Disrespectful & Rude We ordered spinach dip along with 2 other starters, 2 glasses of wine, 4 entrees and 3 desserts yet when the Spin dip was delivered it was brought to their attention my husband couldn't eat it due to Celiac Disease even though it states tortilla chips. So we asked to speak to the owner since he refused to remove the charge even though it left the table after being delivered and never touched - here was his responses. "What do you want me to do, it's not my fault you have a disease, also when I make a mistake I own it". We live close to Valley Cafe and have eaten there many times. The food is consistently very good, but the menu is uninspired. It is very much a diner stuck in the 70s or 80s. We have been turned away several times during operating hours for no reason. Just saying they are closing early. We suspect staffing shortages, which are common in the mountains. We have also had servers without provocation work hard to defend ownership, which doesn't have the best reputation in the area. Glad everything was closed in Clayton on Tuesday night. I've eaten at Valley Cafe a couple of times for lunch but not in the evening. Though menu offerings are the same at either time, the food is always consistently good. My husband and I were there about 5:30 and had no wait, were promptly seated and attended. We had crab cakes (very good) and surf and turf. Sirloin was cooked perfectly (hard to do and not overcook) and grilled shrimp the same, not cooked to rubbery. Only thing preventing five stars is dated decor, but that doesn't diminish the service or food quality. Stopped here for breakfast on our road trip. The standard breakfast was excellent and the service was very good -- speedy and friendly. I was impressed by the pictures of their desserts, so I had a carrot cake to take out, and ate it later that evening. A lovely cake to look at and the best carrot cake I have had.
