Found a bug in my food... not a small one either lol. Let the staff know and all they did was say "let me see what I can do". They then sent a very young employee to just hand us the receipt to which they gave us two children's cost. The food is family style so anyone could have gotten it and that was all they did to address it... Frustrated that no one came to apologize. Food options are very limited now. Things have definitely gone down hill since a company bought this restaurant from the Dillards. I paid $30 plus tip for so many less choices of food than they previously offered. There were no green beans, no butter beans, no okra, no carrots, no country fried steak, no biscuits, and no country fried ham. I asked for a straw and they had no straws. The cobbler had no ice cream on top...just a tiny bit of whipped cream. The waitress wasn't pleasant and didn't refill my tea until I was about to leave. About a month ago a couple of us at lunch because of the great memories. Too high for quality of food. $28 for fried chicken lunch is high. Initially brought 2 pieces of fried chicken so of course we had to ask for more. Cubed steak was good. Once the food has been brought to the table, what you don't eat, they have to throw away. Why not let us take leftovers with us. I read the new owners initiated this policy. Use a little common sense unless you are feeding the "petting farm" animals. Fast forward a month and we're here on a Sunday so we try breakfast. $24 too high for scrambled eggs. Still same policy about taking home food that will be thrown away. We are staying at Black Rock Mountain state park for a long weekend and multiple people at the state park recommended the Dillard House for dinner. We had a party of 7 with kids, and arrived the day after Valentine's Day. They had a fixed price menu for Valentine's Day that included a prime rib station and a large desert bar. The wait was roughly 20 minutes and they do not take reservations for parties less than 15. This is a very touristy restaurant and very overpriced for the quality of food. The staff is very young and generally disinterested in customer care. Having said that, it was a really novel experience for us city slickers. We were seated in a large dining room with walls of windows and a stunning view everywhere you looked. The best items were the mashed sweet potatoes, the green beans, and the cabbage casserole smothered in cheese. The fried chicken had a hard coating and the ribs were fatty, but all part of the deep fried southern experience. The hamburger steak and creamed spinach were mostly inedible. The sweet tea was satisfyingly sweet, the desserts were rich and plentiful, and the bread basket was loaded with cornbread, butter rolls and cheesy rolls. Make sure you ask for jam and apple butter to go with the rolls. I wouldn't necessarily come here again. The food was very rich and not of the highest caliber. It was a great one-time experience, and we enjoyed the overall unrushed experience. read more

Avoid this place. Looks very nice from the road and expansive area surrounding the place. We walked in and were seated immediately. Waitress didn't explain anything and just started bringing us food after our drink order was placed. Family style dining. Food consisted of pork with some gravy, canned tasted green beans, sweet potatoes, scalloped cabbage and watery creamed corn and some lukewarm fried chicken that consisted of a wing, breast and leg. Few rolls also. The cost $28 per person and $3.50 each for ice tea. Total cost: $67 for disgusting lukewarm food that was basically tasteless. There are too many places in this area to choose the Dillard House. My husband chose the place based on our proximity and time of day. Don't waste your money. read more

We are so happy to have stumbled upon this place! While the Yelp reviews are on the lower end, it seems the Google reviews are right on the money. This place is excellent! The service was outstanding. The food--not enough great things to say. The fried chicken is excellent, delicious bbq ribs, and there's literally not a bad side (my favorite being the cabbage casserole). It's all you can eat, but you're stuffed by the end of round 1 for sure. Don't skip out on the dessert either. To top it off, the view is fantastic! I've been coming to the Dillard House since the 1980's when my family first started coming to North Carolina. They're on the GA. Side of the Mountain, so when we got there, we knew were were just a short drive away from our time share. I remember when there was a line no matter what time of day you showed up, so when we arrived at 2;30 in the afternoon and no one seemed to be around I was a little sad and confused. We walked past the hostess stand and to the dining room as the sign told us and we waited. We waited a good 5 minutes to be noticed by the staff. There were 5 or 6 tables in service, so when someone came out of the kitchen and noticed us, they led us to a table by the wall of windows (Lovely view) and sat us down. They didn't go over today's menu, didn't thank us for coming, etc. Just took our drinks and told us the food would be coming out in just a little bit. So totally not the service I've had in the past. The food came out, nice sized portions of Corn, squash casserole, Cabbage, green beans, fried chicken, fried zucchini, country fried steak and sweet potato casserole as well as breads. No butter for the bread and corn was given. The chicken was tasty, the fried zucchini would have been better if it was hot, My favorite thing was the Squash casserole, green beans and corn, all the things we asked for 2nds of. The price is not cheap, but about what you'd pay for dinner out some place else so I can't complain about that. They have a petting zoo and riding stables on the property, so after we ate, I took a walk out there. The horses looked to be in pretty sorry shape, the ones in the muck, not the ones saddled up. The ones in the much had burrs and what have you in their manes, they were standing in full sun and just not happy creatures. The petting zoo animals were all hanging in the shade. I can't say I blame them, it's the Dog Days of August and they were hot. The place has changed over the years, or I have. Beautiful location and there was a bit of a wait so we had high expectations. 20 minute to then enter a 2/3 empty dining room on a Friday night. That should have been a red flag. They brought our three family style salads and tea out pretty quickly. The calico salad was excellent so our expectations were still high. You can check my other reviews, I don't normally leave negative comments but this was so bad... So here goes: But then came the 40 minute wait with no service, no food and no explanation. People who came in after us got their food very quickly. They were basically finished before we even got a chance to start asking where our food was. The service was basically nonexistent. A waitress came by who was not our waitress to ask how we were doing finally and we said we have no food. Food was coming out of the kitchen right and left but no one was taking care of us. I told her if we didn't have our food within five minutes we were going to walk. Six minutes went by and still no food or wait staff and I was standing up to leave when I saw a young man coming with a tray that might be our food so I stood there and waited. Indeed it was our food but it really wasn't worth the wait. The catfish was thick, gummy batter and not flavorful at all. The fried shrimp was rubbery. The fried chicken was very dry and my piece was so thick that I quit eating it because it look like it was possibly pink in the middle. My wife said it tasted like a frozen TV dinner chicken. The fried okra was undercooked and the batter was gummy - not crisp at all a raw batter on the inside. Things that were good: Calico Salad (tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions), and cabbage casserole. Things that were "okay": Corn on the cob, cole slaw, pickled onions, apple butter, and the sweet potato soufflé. Things were not okay: Green beans, fried okra, fried chicken, fried catfish, shrimp, broccoli & cheese, oven browned potatoes, cheese biscuits (incredibly dry), biscuits (again, dry), Apple Betty dessert, soft serve ice cream. The manager finally came over and explained that our "ticket got lost". That still doesn't excuse them for not noticing for over 30 minutes that we didn't have food. The same people who got their food who came after us had the same waitress as us. The manager did say that she would heavily discount our ticket. So we paid $31 for a subpar meal. The normal price would've been $52. They brought enough food out for the two of us to feed a family of six or eight. They said we could take it home but we are on vacation so it's a tremendous waste of food. And even if we lived here, there was nothing that we wanted to take home except maybe the calico salad. read more

I am gluten intolerant so let me star with that: called and asked ahead about gluten free options and they didn't even know what gluten was. They suggested certain dishes made without flour would be OK but I wasn't entirely sure. We ate there anyway, which was a mistake. It's a buffet so the food should come immediately but we sat there waiting for 20 some minutes for no obvious reason. People who came in after us got their food first. I asked our waiter (who also said he didn't know what gluten was) to check which food items were gluten free, he never did. For that matter he never brought us food, he went on break and another waiter gave us service after we got up and asked how much longer the wait was as we would be heading elsewhere if the food wasn't coming soon. Of course the new waiter didn't know any of the requests, or that I had requested ham from the kitchen because of the gluten intolerance. When food finally showed up they brought out tiny plates for 7 people to share! Had to wait for more for several dishes. For $24 for lunch, it was absolutely not worth it. We were there on New Year's Day and our alternatives were limited with a lot of local restaurants closed, but even Chick Fil A would have been a better choice. We've been coming here for years off an on. We came for breakfast this time and I'm sorry to say we won't be back. The food was cold when we got it (eggs, gravy, grits, pancakes), we had to ask for butter but it got to us after we'd eaten what we wanted it for. One of the servers acted like we were bothering him. My husband and I tried it for the first time for dinner and couldn't believe how much food you get for the money! You can definitely tell this is home grown fresh food. We had fried chicken, ribs, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn on the cob, butternut squash soufflé, black eyed peas, turnip greens were out of this world delicious, fried okra, sweet potato soufflé, biscuits and cornbread muffins. This place is great. A family restaurant that is old school and true southern style kind of like the Smith house but in some ways better. My son says that it's three times better than the Smith house. The food quality here is high and the company is good. The customer service is excellent and very friendly and the portions of the food is generous. The prices are reasonable and the location is nestled away in a remote quiet area so it definitely feels peaceful and nice. Five Yelp Stars two thumbs up and a highly recommended and thank you to the owners and workers here. My son gives two thumbs up as well he says it's a pretty good restaurant which means very good restaurant in my book. read more

The food was super slim pickings and the best dish was probably the mash potatoes and the cheese on cabbage. Everything else was less than mediocre. The place itself seem very dirty and not cleaned. Now I've read many reviews about the place in Yelp and in TripAdvisor. A lot of their reviews are spot on. I hope that they'll consider these reviews and change their ways. We came here on a recommendation with our family. We did the horseback riding before and spent some time feeding the farm animals. The food was good. It was essentially a buffet, but served homestyle. Very expensive considering what you're getting. I loved the squash casserole and fried zucchini. Only a couple of our family members ate the lima beans, and they both were very sick after. The grounds were beautiful and had a breathtaking mountain view. We enjoyed the shop by the restaurant. I have been eating at the Dillard house for over 30 years. I waited tables there in the late 90s and have many fond memories. Yesterday I decided to pay them a visit and revisit some of those memories. I left feeling sad, aggravated and I paid 60 dollars for that miserable experience. It started out ok and they brought drinks but then not another word. The food came out and that's when things went down hill. The first thing that happened was a piece of corn on the cob rolled off of the plate and onto the dirty serving tray and rolled around for a minute. The guy picked it up with his bare fingers..set it back on the plate and put the plate on the table. After that....not another server to our table for over half an hour. Finally we managed to get a few refills and then nothing for another half an hour. One guy finally came over and said "are you guys waiting for something?" and I told him... "Dessert?" Which comes with the meal. I watched him go over to his bigger tables...talk ... Visit with some other servers....then finally...after another half hour bring the dessert....which we left on the table and walked out. The absolute worst service I have ever had. Looking at other reviews that is the Dillard house norm. There is a reason many of the locals don't spend their money here. So many better and cheaper places in Rabun. read more

The cabin we rented for our vacation was chosen because it was close to the Dillard house. We had been there about 18 years prior and we talked about how good it was every since. However, I am truly sad to say that it was not the same. I guess I should have realized something was up when we went on a Friday evening at dinner time and were two of a very few diners there. Some of the food was ok but most of it was bland. Once our food was brought to the table, we didn't see any other wait staff until one brought a subpar dessert. I remember a dessert cart being wheel with dessert choices all those years ago. I also remember them bringing new bowls of food whenever one was empty. If the food had been good and the service had been as u remembered, I wouldn't have minded paying so much, but $80plus for subpar food and service heart my heart. I've grown up taking trips to Dillard Georgia and Clayton. Whatever the occasion was i enjoyed the trips. One of the highlights was Dillard House great food great service. Gift shop was amazing. My favorite restaurant is now as of today my worst experience. What happened to the cooks and waiting staff? Our food was cold greasy and not at all what was offered as the restaurant menu on line. We traveled 2 1/2 hours just for the acorn squash soufflé. Was not on the menu today. Update your menu, as easy as that. The menu on wall offered Apple Brown Betty we received some sour strawberry concoction that was not good and no explanation from waiter. ( Not very friendly either ). What I am saying they do not hold their restaurant now to the standard I and my family remember and hold high expectations and regards for. We all are not coming to this restaurant again. We used to stop here every time we went north when my kids were younger. Both food and service have declined, and it's not worth the price they charge. The view is still amazing. When we catch the timing right, my family likes to stop by here on our way to Harrah's Cherokee. We stopped by last night and had a very enjoyable dinner! I'd say that the food was a little better on my previous visits (some of the items seemed a little cold)....but all in all, experience was good, friendly service. I love that you don't order, and that they just bring out all the food and fill up your table! All the side items were great: Mac and cheese, cabbage casserole, corn were some of our favorites.
