Damascus Diner -- Damascus, VA…read more I'll admit it--I'm not usually a diner person, and I actually debated driving back to Abingdon for breakfast. But we were staying in a cabin along the Virginia Creeper Trail, and walking the trail into town for a traditional Southern breakfast sounded like the more authentic mountain-town experience. I'm so glad we did. The portions were huge, the prices were incredibly reasonable, and everything we tried was good. My husband ordered "The Hog"--2 eggs, country potatoes, sausage, bacon and pork loin. The sausage was his favorite of the meats. I had the Mt. Rogers with 3 eggs, hash brown casserole, and upgraded to the 8-oz sirloin. Both meals came with toast or a biscuit, grits, and peppered sausage gravy. They were out of biscuits, so we had white and sourdough toast instead, and it was all good. The food was hearty, traditional, and exactly what I was craving. But what really made the experience was the Southern hospitality. The young woman serving and the host were both so kind and cheerful. Sometimes the best travel experiences aren't the trendy places--they're the local spots where you walk in hungry, leave completely stuffed, and feel genuinely welcomed. Damascus Diner was one of those places.

It was tasty. I had the hamburger steak, the lunch portion, $11 with collards and mashed potatoes and I, too, ate every bite! It hit the spot. The food was home cooked style and worth every penny!

That's a bummer…read more So, we showed up here to relax and have breakfast one weekend rather than eat in our cars. I was saying goodbye to family and we decided to eat here before driving off in all directions. As a chain breakfast spot goes, the food was in the lower part of the OK zone. It wasn't nearly as good as the higher end breakfast spots and kind of felt behind the standard. Kind of the "value" breakfast. It was warm, eggs were great, it met the needs. Staff was great. Waitress was very nice, polite and attentive. The cook was working his butt off and really hustled in the kitchen doing an A+ job. The management should be proud of the people here. With OK food and great staff, the score dropped because of the seating. We had six adults put at a table that really was designed terribly. In likely another cost saving measure by their franchise operations, they have this ledge along all the windows. It hangs out about 6". If you are along the window and eat with that arm, forget it. It was a crazy inconvenience. I almost went to 2 because of the poor design. If you are a cost accountant, maybe you would rate it higher on the ability to cram people into a space designed to cost the least to build.

Huddle House - Solid food with the MVP breakfast. Eggs were good, biscuits/gravy were ok. Definitely a par on the course if scoring.

Huddle House - TERRIBLE ledge if you have 6 people at a table. DON'T DO IT.

Our server was very attentive and friendly. She helped us make our selections and checked on us to make sure everything was good. The atmosphere was what you'd expect inside a diner. We felt relaxed and comfortable there. Overall, we'd definitely return here for the food most of all.

The food and service were just good on that day. Then there was today. Front door greeter was friendly and seated us quickly. Server we had today was ok. None of the hash browns we ordered were scattered and crispy like we ordered. Of course my husbands order was just all messed up. He ordered over medium well eggs came out over easy. Order well done toast came out loaf bread. Ordered well done sausage came out barely cooked. Hash browns were ordered scattered crispy came out barely cooked. Sausage and toast were left on plate. Couldn't eat it. Bacon was great. Coffee was excellent. This may be a hit or miss place. It all could've been on who was cooking or if server wrote a fictional order down. Not sure what happened. They did knock off a little over a dollar off the ticket. He should have sent it back but he doesn't do that. He just won't. We liked the ambiance. Decorated like yesteryears. Very comforting and clean place to eat. I might be back but he won't.
