This place has baffled me for a long time because I have driven over about 5 times now around noon on the weekends to try them out for a beef and a hot dog of some sort. When they had a web page it says that they open at 11am on the weekends just like yelp states but they are always closed. I have even called several times to verify the hours and even the day before my drive only to constantly find them closed at noon on the weekends and a waste of a drive because I don't live anywhere close to then. So last night I call to verify the hours again and I told that they open at 11am but maybe 12pm if the worker is late, what is that about. I get there at 11:45 and the place is closed so I decided to stake the place out and see what time that they actually open and at 12:40 pm a guy starts putting the outdoor seating in front of the place, that's almost 2 hours late to open. I opted for a chili cheese dog and a Chicago style beef dipped with hot peppers. The chili cheese dog looked pathetic and anemic was my first thought and it had a thin whiff chili on it and shredded cheese. The chili cheese dog was over priced at almost $5 with tax for what you get. The Chicago style beef dipped with hot peppers was flash dipped so the bread was not soggy like I like them and it was smaller then the average Italian beef I thought. The beef was clearly the better choice and the peppers were hot to my liking. I would stick with that Chicago place that starts with a P for beefs and dogs because this place was a let down and over priced for what you get. read more

I stopped by the Dogg Haus last week because I was seriously caving their Rome Dogg, which is a Vienna beef hot dog topped with provolone, Italian Beef, and giardiniera. It's so delicious and probably my favorite hot dog! Yes, I would take a Rome over a Chicago dog. I also ordered a Chili dog and fries, which were both also delicious! The food survived my drive home, and the jus from the Italian Beef made the bun a little vulnerable, but that is to be expected. I've enjoyed the hot dogs here before, especially liked that they have a meatless imitation hot dog. The hours are so erratic and undependable it's just too frustrating. Don't ever get your hopes up high, don't try to come here when you're hungry or have a serious jones for a hot dog, they will more likely than not be closed. I would only recommend coming here if you're not that hungry so you won't be bitterly disappointed when it's all locked up. I'm not a big fan of the Dogg Haus... the Chicago dogs here are around about a four star - not completely authentic, and not completely fresh and delicious, but definitely on the right track. The reason why I really didn't enjoy it, though, was because several employees were smoking directly outside the store - at the table next to the doorway - so the store smelled of it, and the doorway smelled of it, and the guy that got up from his break to go make my hot dog smelled of it. I kind of have a phobia to cigarettes, as I know a lot of people do, but I'm worse about it than any of them. In my own mind at least. The ingredients are all in plain view and looked absolutely fresh, something that impressed me. The Chicago Dog (with requested ketchup, hey, we're in Wisconsin now...) was excellent. The meat wasn't anything special but they piled it on thick, very generous with the portions. They have an extra meat option but I'm not sure where they'd have put any extra meat. I used to take the bus to work past the flagship Dogg Haus while it was still in the process of being built. I watched the progress on the space, and was really excited to see "Hot Dogs," "Italian Beef," and "Coming Soon" written in the soaped windows in the weeks leading up to the grand opening. So, when they opened, I was the second customer through the door, and the first one to actually buy anything. The first day, I ordered an Italian Combo sandwich (Italian beef and Italian sausage with mozzarella), and a classic Chicago Dogg. I was immediately impressed. I'd had both of them many times over at the sort of places in Chicago that claimed to have invented them. Al's, Portillo's, etc. And The Dogg Haus versions were NOT MESSING AROUND. The beef was sliced thin, the au jus perfectly spiced, and the sausage was to this day the best I've ever had. And the portion size! Especially for the price, it's a hell of a sandwich. The Dogg was just as awesome. It's a true Chicago-style - Steamed poppyseed bun, onions, celery salt, nuke-green relish, mustard...And of course an all-beef Vienna dog that snapped when you bit into it. Before I was even done, I was not only forced to admit that The Dogg Haus might actually do Chicago dogs better than, well...CHICAGO, but I'd already started looking forward to my next trip back. And it wasn't long. I came back as often as I could after that. The food was always spot-on, and the service never failed to be prompt and friendly. Most of the time, the staff even remembered my order, and started putting it together as soon as I walked in the door. So it was with great satisfaction that I watched as more and more people discovered the place, causing Dogg Hauses to pop up all over town. I felt a small swell of hipster cred that I'd gotten there first, but I was still happy that others loved it as much as I did. Then the awards started rolling in. Shepherd "Best of Milwaukee" every year since opening. Travel blogs putting the place on top-ten lists. Accolade after accolade. Location after location, all justifying my initial assessment. And still, never a single step missed on the food, or the service, no matter when I went in. Simply put, The Dogg Haus is a treasure. I don't live in Milwaukee anymore since my job takes me all over the country, but Milwaukee is still home. And whenever I'm back, The Dogg Haus is a must-stop. It's not a trip home without it. Because I've TRIED to eat at other places that claim to have "Authentic Chicago Beef and Dogs" wherever I am, and at best, they land somewhere in the neighborhood. The only place that NAILS it? Here. They do them up here about the way I remember them at the Vienna beef hot dog factory cafe (there is such a magical place on Damen Ave. in Chicago!) or Al's Beef Chicago on West Taylor Street. I'm not going to lie, when I think Dogg Haus, I think drunk food (they're open until 3am and right on Brady), but if I soberly wanted a hot dog outside of Miller Park, this would be the place to get it! The Chicago Dogg is a classic and done very well, the Kansas City is fun as it comes with their Italian Beef and cheddar cheese, the corn dog is so fresh you won't want any other corn dog again, and they have a bunch of other combos (or build your own) that you'll definitely want napkins for. My best experience was when I went after bar close with a friend, we ordered a bunch of food to-go (there isn't a whole lot of room to eat inside unless you snag a window counter spot) including the cheese curds (a little heavily breaded for my taste, but still good) - it was raining and when we walked outside, the bag ripped and my cheese curds went everywhere.
