The Doner Shawarma is a food truck located in a gas station on Telegraph. They serve more Turkish/German-style doner vs. the other more common Lebanese-style shawarma around the area. Since we've never had this style of doner before, we were interested in trying it out and stopped by soon after opening for a quick lunch. The first thing I noted as I pulled up was the exceptionally small parking lot. There's basically no parking at the BP - I guess most people block off a gas pump or just park haphazardly while waiting for their food? I also noticed that they park the food truck just 15 or 20 feet away from the gas station dumpster and I could smell some of the rotting contents while waiting for the food. Not the most pleasant. At any rate, we found the owner to be very friendly and ended up ordering two items: Chicken Doner ($11.99) - I can't vouch for authenticity, but I thought this sandwich was excellent. It includes a ton of chicken, shaved right off the spit, with a good amount of char. The chicken is a bit on the dry side, but they add a lot of sauce to add some of the moisture back. It's possibly a bit too much sauce, given how the sandwich drips constantly as you eat. One of the sauces is kind of like a tzatziki, very fresh and creamy. The other sauce is a spicier red to add a bit of heat. The sandwich has lots of veggies, including red cabbage, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions to add additional crunch and freshness. Everything is encapsulated in a quarter pide, thicker and more bready than a pita, with nigella and sesame sprinkled on top. The pide seems to be pressed in a panini press, adding a very nice crisp layer to the exterior. Overall I quite enjoyed this sandwich and would not hesitate to recommend it. (4/5) Garlic Cilantro Fries, Large ($9.98) - They don't list the large size on the menu, but you can upgrade the size of any of your sides for double the price. I think you get way more than double the amount of food, going from a small takeout container to a large one, so I think it's worth it. Even before this dish came out, I could smell the garlic through the window of the truck as they mixed the garlic and cilantro with the fries. When I started eating, I noted the dish to continue to have a very nice fresh garlic and cilantro fragrance. I think they have shawarma spices mixed in as well to give some more earthy and spicy notes. The fries are fried to a very nice crisp and generally quite pleasant to eat. I think they were perhaps a bit undersalted, but still perfectly delicious. (4/5) I found the found the food at The Doner Shawarma to be delicious and a departure from most of the Middle Eastern food found in the area. If you want something just a little bit different, this place hits the spot.

One of the best shawarma sandwiches I have tried. Loved the bread. Lots of veggies. We got chicken shawarma doner and falafel doner. One of the best falafel doner. Can't wait to go again next time.

I went here earlier during the winter because of hearing about it from Mr Chimetime and I have to say was that this place definitely has become officially not just the best Doner but also the best food truck in the Detroit metro area.

I had a mixed Doner chicken and beef. The meat was tasty. The customer service was excellent. My only complaint is it was loaded up with toppings and sauces, so it seems the meat got lost. The bread was delicious too. Next time I will tell them to go light on the two sauces. I hate a sloppy sandwich which makes it get cold fast. I just started to eat the meat out the sandwich.

Very happy to see an authentic döner place right here in SE Michigan! Last time I had this delicious version of gyros/shwarma was in Ottawa, Ontario many years ago. Döner's meat is marinated in sharp, peppery spices and slathered with a garlicky sauce. A taste explosion compared to shwarma or gyros and far less salty. We tried the beef and the chicken (a mix cut right from the stacked and slowly cooked roll spit of mostly white meat with some thigh meat mixed in) and both were equally melt in your mouth delicious. Reheated half of it the next day for 5 min in the air fryer and it was still great. The bread was a sesame seed-sprinkled pita bread that had a lot more bready loft than typical Syrian bread, which absorbed a lot of the sauce. It is loaded with vegetables- onions, pickled cabbage, etc. A little expensive for a sandwich but hey, it will last for 2 days! BTW, döner is pronounced 'dih-neer.' I already knew that because the Canadian one has haunted me for many years wishing we had a place to get it here.

Sorr had to eat some . Beef Doner tastes awesome!!

Got chicken and rice and beef with fries. I preferred the chicken to the beef. Loved the sauces. Fries were great. Beef had too much seasoning and was a bit like a coating. Would def go back tho!

The building has been there a long time, and you enter a different world when you walk in the front door. First off, you need a reservation. No big deal. We scheduled around the time of the piano player, that added to the atmosphere. There is something cool to look at everywhere. They were a bit short-staffed this night, according to our waitress, who mentioned it a few times. You could tell, things were moving really slowly. We got a few drinks and some St Clair punch (water), and waited to put in our order. We split some entrees, and while the sides are of decent size, the entrees themselves were on the small size. I've been to some other German restaurants, their entree sizes are significantly larger in the same price range. The separate sides of spaetzel were decent size, but kind of dry. We should have tried the cheese version. Things were decent tasting, but not amazing. The carrot apple slaw was a lot better than we expected. I'm glad we finally came and had the experience, it's really a historical gem.

This is a German restaurant in name only. Service was sub-par. My party sat for 10-15 minutes before water was offered. Ordered appetizers and our dinners. Dinners came first followed five minutes later by appetizers. My order of Chicken paprikash was lukewarm and I could find very little chicken in it. I was so hungry I regrettably ate it that way. Waitress never checked back if everything was ok or if we wanted another round of drinks. I generously give two stars because the Weihenstephaner Dunkel on draft is a rare find and the German egg rolls are outstanding. Other than that, our visit was sehr enttäuschend (disappointing)

When I suggested "German with German beers on tap" the decision was made. We lucked out with our arrival on a busy night as the place is first come, first served and it is not at all very large. Three or four tables, two community tables and a dozen seats along the bar. And if you're not inside, you're queued up outside. We got the last two tables. Beer? They have all the big German beers on tap in large and larger glasses. Or if you want a tin? They have that too. They even have the good NA beers if you prefer. I started off with the Schöfferhofer Grapefruit Hefeweizen from Dortmund Germany (not very Germany purity law pure, but it's hot). On a hot day after walking too many streets of Detroit, this was a treat. With dinner, the Hefeweizen from Brauerei Pinkus Müller from Münster, Germany. Both cold and delicious and refreshing. For dinner, I chose the wurst platter, taking off the potato pancakes (I'm sorry) and substituting red cabbage. They were deliciously grilled, served hot and I enjoyed them very much. The only miss was that they didn't have their own mustard. I had to use the table mustard which was a bummer. Great service, we were never rushed though the serving staff was trying very hard to keep up with the flow. It was a fabulous meal and my great Yelp reputation with my colleagues continues.
