Our first visit was disappointing. The mussels were delicious as well as the calamari. However, they served me three large filet "medallions" each one cooked differently: medium rare, medium, and well done. Most of it was stringy, they offered only potatoes as a side, and "whatever the chef decides on a particular day." My husband's filet mignon was overcooked and dry, his potatoes lukewarm, and scallops overcooked. He told the waitress who offered to take the scallops - not the entire plate. The manager came over to apologize and asked my husband if he'd like to try anything else but he was too disappointed and lost his appetite. He explained that we were celebrating our anniversary but the woman didn't care to acknowledge it. After all that, the waitress returned and asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu without apologizing about our meal. Very unprofessional. We declined, paid the check, and left the bare minimum tip, which we never do. We don't blame the waitress for the food, but for her service technique and disinterest in her patrons' needs. Oh, they didn't charge us for my husband's meal but lacked the courtesy to tell us in person. My wife and I dined at The Publyk House on the first night of our Memorial Day weekend getaway, and it truly set the perfect tone for our trip. The location is fantastic... just a quick and easy drive outside of town, and the views from the deck are simply breathtaking. There's something special about enjoying a meal surrounded by such beautiful scenery. As for the food, we had mixed experiences. My Stuffed Cod was absolutely delicious, cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. It was one of the best meals I've had in a while. My wife's Prime Rib dinner, while good, didn't quite exceed average. There was nothing wrong with it; it just didn't leave the same impression as my dish. The service at The Publyk House was commendable. The staff were friendly and attentive, adding to the overall pleasant experience. The complimentary bread was a nice touch that made our meal feel even more welcoming. Our first night in Bennington was on a night that our inn restaurant was closed, so we came to this establishment, The Publyk House. It was a very spacious restaurant with a lovely outdoor patio that had sweeping views of the greater Bennington area. However, we ate indoors... just too humid during the summer. They serve a nice, warm loaf of bread with maple butter, which was quite good. They have a nice salad bar, nothing standout, but decent enough that came with each entree, but they had just run out of Ranch dressing before I prepared my salad, so that was a bummer. Not their fault. However, the turkey dinner I ordered was not at all to my liking, and that was their fault. The turkey was too salty, and the gravy was waaaaay too salty. The mashed potatoes had no flavor, AND they were extremely dry. I couldn't even eat the stuffing because it was smothered in the overly salty gravy. The only thing I ate was the cranberry sauce, and that tasted great. I didn't want to engage in a conversation with the waitress about my dinner, so I just told her I was full from the salad bar and bread, which was truthful anyway, but I would've eaten more of my entree had I liked it. My husband was totally fine with his eggplant rollatini. I didn't taste it. I know they have other menu items, but I doubt we'd make our way back here, sorry to say. It was just average to me. Ate here this evening when nearly finished with our all-day drive here from Maryland. Crowded, families, friends, nice vibe. Love the outer dining area, high ceilings, not too noisy. I had the salad bar and a glass of Pinot noir, spouse had pan-seared salmon with maple pecan topping with a baked potato (all entrees include the salad bar). We sat at the bar and ordered drinks. The bartender wasn't the friendliest, but he was ok. Looked like he had a hard time getting from one end of the bar to the other, so maybe that had something to do with it. We ordered the crab cake app and they were great. My mom and I were on vacation in Vermont looking at the gorgeous fall views. We stopped at Publyk House and it was pretty good but not the best. Went here for Mother's Day brunch and was incredibly disappointed. They charge $60 a head for a buffet. Not worth $60 at all, from the food to the service. Food from the trays was all cold and bland. Drinks were overpriced. We were asked for a drink order once, and never again. We wanted to ask for coffee after the meal but before we had the chance the server interrupted us and put the check on the table. First and foremost we had a party of 17. So a lot of people. The waitress took care of us incredibly well. She was attentive always asking if we needed anything, let us know about our food . She took our order and we went up to get salad bar. The salad bar is a huge plus as I always love a good one. I ordered the lobster bisque. It arrived and was super hot and pretty flavorful. We had also ordered garlic Parmesan wings. They were a bit different than what I'm used to but tasted very flavorful as well. I ordered the steak medium rare . Once it finally arrived after a very long kitchen wait (which the waitress spoke to us to let us know several times) the steak was more medium to well. After two disappointing visits to what is arguably the best restaurant in the Bennington area I was pleased to enjoy an experience and meal that is worthy of this title. As always the salad bar is the star of the show. Our waitress, Charity, was attentive and perfect in every way. Water glasses were always full and spectacularly the Prime Rib, after two previous bad experiences, was perfectly cooked and melt in your mouth tender. Though fairly unseasoned, the addition of a peppercorn glaze enhanced the medium rare, generous portion of bovine to a mouthwatering dining experience. Enough was left for another dinner which will NOT be shared with the dog. My wife had a Salmon dish which was delicious. While not a restaurant one can afford to visit weekly, it is worth saving up for an occasional visit. The fireplace filled the room with warmth on a very cold winter day and I look forward to another excuse to declare a special occasion and return to the Publyk House. read more

Wow. What an experience! We are here for work with 10 coworkers and this restaurant was recommended by our hotel. Wowza. When we walked in, the restaurant is beautiful decorated and so welcoming. My daughter and I were in Bennington while doing college tours. The Publyk House was recommended to us, so we made a reservation. Maybe it was just an off night. We had mediocre service. The kind where you have to flag someone down every time you need your water refilled. The kind where it takes 10 minutes to get a refill on a soda. The kind where you have to ask several times for the bread included with your meal (the bread and maple butter is what they are known for, and we really wanted to try it). The food was just ok. I was in Vermont and The Publyk House caught my eye so I decided to give it a try. That being said, I'm glad I did because it was very good. To get things underway, the waitress brought out complimentary bread with homemade maple butter. In light of this, the bread was delicious. It was light, fresh, and tasted homemade. Also, the maple butter was sweet and went perfectly with the bread. Likewise, a trip to the salad bar came with every entree. The salad bar had a lot of options and everything tasted very fresh. Following that, I ordered the lobster macaroni and cheese for my meal. With that being said, the lobster macaroni and cheese was delicious. To enlighten, the noodles were cooked just right and it was extremely cheesy. Additionally, the lobster was fresh and had excellent flavor. Similarly, the macaroni and cheese had a bread crumb topping that added the perfect crunchiness. This was simply a very good lobster macaroni and cheese. Good sized restaurant with plenty of seating options in the restaurant, tavern and outside (on a nice day). Service was attentive and friendly. The decor gives a "warm cabin" kind of feel - to me anyway. Wish the fireplace was lit. Overall, we did not enjoy the food. Here's what we had and comments: - Salad bar: (3.5) I enjoyed the salad bar; however my wife struggled with the appearances and opted out. Mainly, many of the items were messy with stuff spilled out probably due to much use (we arrived at 7:30pm). Also, the tongs were lying fully in the lettuce including the part people were using with their hands. - Bread: (2.75) Bread was made in house, but it was served room temperature, which was chilly. Also, the bread was dry - so I am guessing it was cooked early in the day. Maple butter was tasty but it was served very cold and didn't melt or spread easily on cold bread. - Baked Cod: (3) Relatively small amount of cod covered and baked with a copious amount of finely ground bread crumbs, cheese and butter. The result was a casserole textured dish that mostly tasted like mushy breadcrumbs. This is the first time having New England baked cod, so this may have been served the traditional way; however, it wasn't to our liking. - Maple old fashioned (2.5): I have honestly never had an old fashioned that I couldn't finish. This one was tough. There was too much maple. - Filet medallions topped with crab and lobster cream sauce: (3) cut of steak was not trimmed well, so many sinewy, chewy bites. Lacked seasoning, so salt was a must. Crab was not fresh and may have been canned. Lobster sauce was almost room temperature. Baked potato was served lukewarm and almost melted the butter. Small serving of green beans needed seasoning and they were not well trimmed. For $40, this was a disappointment. read more

This place started out promising. It was well recommended, the atmosphere perfect (an old barn that had been moved to its current location in the 1970s), and a good server. Unfortunately, the food was surprisingly mediocre. The crust on the complimentary bread was so hard that cutting it made the thing crumble & fall apart. The salad bar (yes, a 1970's style salad bar!) was bland, and vaguely creepy in this post-COVID time. The mac & cheese tasted like a box of Velveeta mac & chz; we had to add black pepper to give it some taste. The entrees were the same mediocre. And the apple crisp dessert was perhaps the most disappointing: some apple slices atop a sprinkling of uncooked oats with a scoop of ice cream. Bummer. read more

We went in on a Saturday night at 6:30, no reservations, and were seated on the patio overlooking the war monument and the gorgeous green mountains. Every entree comes with access to the DIY salad bar, and so for the veggie-lovers out there, this is quite a deal! Also, for dog owners-- the patio is very dog friendly! After going Vermont through Bennington for over 40+ years discovered this gem three weeks ago. Arrived late in VT and had to stop in Home Depot. Looked for restaurants near me. Publyk House pop up - kind of around the corner and opened until 9:00PM and the reviews weren't too shabby. Off I go. Walked in with no reservation & was seated immediately. The place is big and dark and looked pretty much full. People were leaving as it was close to 8PM Ordered a melbac and perused the menu for a few minutes. Melbac arrived almost immediately. Decided on Mussels in wine sauce and Fried Oysters, two apps - I like to graze. There's an all you can eat salad bar available at an additional cost. The mussels were delicious. Next came the oysters - oh, I could just eat those all day long. The following week I had Clam Chowdha & Fried Oysters. Chowdha full of clams - delish. Must try something else besides the oysters on my next stopover. read more

So many gluten free options! We ordered the artichoke and spinach dip, Caesar salad, GF shrimp scampi, and other things. They even have a GF bread roll the can bring you with maple butter. Yum! I thought everything was absolutely delicious and only had a couple minor critiques - the chips with the s&a dip were on the stale side and the Caesar salad was nothing special. This was my husband and I's 1st time at a restaurant since pre-covid and our 2nd time here and we were very pleased! We were able to get a reservation on the patio for 7 when calling at 530. The ambiance was just what we were looking for. The sunset and view was the perfect background for our 5 year wedding anniversary. The bread was warm and the accompanying maple butter was tasty. We didn't buy any to take home but I read on their site that you can. My favorite part of the meal was the lobster bisque. I consider myself a soup connoisseur and this was soooo good that I'm still thinking about it. We shared the calamari (chipotle aioli for the win!) and we both had a watermelon mule. It was tasty but not sure I'd pay $12 per drink again. I'd say it felt more like $8-9. For entrees, I had the king prime rib and my husband had the fisherman's platter. The portions were huge so we ate till we couldn't move and still brought leftovers home! Very happy with our visit. The service was great, the view unbeatable and the food very well done. We went to Publyk house last fall and had a wonderful experience. Last week was far from the same!! Wednesday was the 1st day of a new menu. we were not happy with the menu options. My husbands strip steak was 1/3 gristle. My fish and chips was frozen shredded fish. The fresh bread was cold. The restaurant was empty and the hostess seated us in the corner inches away from a rather loud table. Our waitress (Dana) was awesome in spite of the fact that she was running from one end of the place to the other due to the placement of tables she was assigned to. Prices were way too high for the quality. Needless to say..we were very disappointed and will not return. read more

Always a good experience and great meal when we come. Typically we come for special occasions. The only thing I would say I find disappointing is the lack of a Mocktail menu. I am aware I can ask the Bartender to make a special drink, but seeing a list of the different options just makes it that much more fun and helps keep the non alcohol drinkers feel included. Was deciding on a place to eat before my departure back to New Jersey after a long weekend of snowboarding and I'm glad I came across Publyk House. The menu was diverse and unique, the staff was incredibly friendly and hospitable, and the salad bar was just the cherry on top. Service was great! The restaurant had a few different dining areas, we were in the main with wonderful panoramic views of the mountain range and a perfect place to be and watch a sunset. The food there was good and bad. The bad was the bread they brought to the table it was so dry it broke apart when you tried to cut off a piece or butter it with their maple butter. We asked the waitress if we could get a different loaf which was a fresh baked loaf and was yummy. My husband got the two types of BBQ, brisket and pulled pork with beans and coleslaw. The beans were very good, delicious! Pulled pork was good, the brisket over cooked and dry, it was like the pieces were pre cut. If anyone knows about keeping it juicy, all you have to do is cut it off the brisket itself right before serving. The coleslaw was good. I had the salad bar, nothing stands out on the salad bar your normal stuff, I was disappointed with the crab cakes which were small and not very tasty ( this coming from a person who has had quite a few crab cakes in her time).
