Place is still absolutely Amazing and like the fine wine they sell, has gotten better with age

This place is a must in Rockwall. A MUST. I was hungry, and wanted something flavorful. Got on yelp and saw that they had some good things on the menu and decided to give it a try. What I loved most about this place was how local it was. People were dropping in, and everyone knew each other. We loved it. I highly recommend getting a reservation. We came in and sat at the bar, which wasn't bad, but just a heads up! Bartender/server Russo - AMAZING! This space isn't extremely spacious. They do have an outside, but it was really cold. We started off with a wine flight. Such a lovely poor for a flight, and the price was only 18. My man and I actually shared it. Will easily get this every time. For food - you can't go wrong with anything. I mean anything. We were blown away. We started off with the seared tuna, the sauce was so tasty we dipped our toasted focaccia bread in it. Perfect combination. We couldn't choose between the two pastas so we got both. The lamb gnocchi and ricotta lemon ravioli everything was so perfect. Both great portions, both extremely flavorful. You have to get these. We ended the night with a desert and again, blown away. We got the chocolate mousse and cleaned the bowl. It had little bites of vanilla cake in it, so good. This place is fantastic. We are easily coming back, we need to try the sandwiches!

OMG the Gumbo was perfection on a cool rainy day before Easter. The Bloody Marys were great too. Excellent service. We can't wait to come again. It was the perfect meal before our musical at Fair Park. We came from Winnsboro.

The Downing Bottles & Bites is a splendid gem nestled into the charming downtown Rockwall town center. The street on one side has been paved over for walking which is great, the eclectic ambiance inside is fun, the wine selection (and other spirits too) are deep and carefully thought out, plus the food is just really interestingly designed and quite delicious! I had a martini which had some oysters involved (made in house) that is voodoo magic but quite delicious and my other guest had a wine flight - a fun flight serviced in a tree. We shared the salmon dip as an appetizer - I learned that Chef David Hauffman broke down and grinds the salmon by hand to create this spectacular dish. We then also shared the lamb (looked like a thick stew served with warm pita) and grilled salmon (cooked to perfection with a crunchy top shell, perfect inside). Denise was an attentive, friendly and helpful server as well. And, Jenni (one-half of the husband-wife ownership team) swung by to hang out for a bit. Honorable mention to the animal skull above the toilet in the bathroom (pic included - you're welcome) The Downing is absolutely splendid and should be visited, so go check it out

On of three small dining areas in The Downing Bottles & Bites, downtown Rockwall

This small restaurant has an amazing menu. You would never guess that variety and sophistication of what comes out of their small kitchen. This reminds me of some of the small restaurants in NYC that are super good. Examples from their menu include: mushroom lettuce wraps, fresh oysters on the shell, baked Brie, chicken tom yum soup, shrimp & grits, salmon poke, cheesy truffle pasta, ricotta lemon ravioli, el jefe's Cubano sandwich with roasted pork, ham, & Swiss, tuna melt, and hot dogs. They have a wine club and offer an impressive selection of wine and beer which, ordered with one of their charcuterie boards, will give you a lovely evening in the pedestrian only part of downtown Rockwall.

What a Quaint place! This is a hidden gem in Rockwall that is a must visit. Great variety of wines, espresso martinis, and other Adult Beverages. The food is excellent and so delicious, whomever the chef and collaborator are, round of applause for y'all! I had the Lemongrass Chicken Bowl with the chili lime vinaigrette dressing and it was refreshing. I also order a glass of the Chenin wine and it was crisp and clean. I had a bite of my friend's Beef & Rice Bowl made with Red Angus and it was sooo good. I may order that on my next visit. The ambience was welcoming, relaxed and cozy. The waiter was attentive and gave great service. We went to sit on their outside patio after lunch to enjoy another glass of wine & feel the sun and found ourselves in hanging chairs accompanied by a friendly cute & calm squirrel to watch. Can't wait to go again, still craving their food.

Great atmosphere, great vibe, even greater people! Came here during the farmers market and Halloweekened events! The place is a lot bigger than expected and the hostess was fun to talk to, witty and expressive (I love love loveee people w character)! The bartender, didn't catch her name but she had dark hair and blue eyes. She was a sweetheart and gave phenomenal drink and food recommendations. I ended up listening to everything she said to get and got it. I'm not easily influenced however everything she liked, I loved and was already planning on getting. Guess great minds do think alike! We had the seared tuna, it was sweet yet savory. Every bite down to the ponzu was incredibly satisfying and mouth watering. My man had the muffeleta. He devoured it and the Sicilian salad I chowed down on. I love anything salad with peppercini's. The kitchen is quaint and the cooks, from what I can tell, put great love into their foods. Or what I call, art on a plate! Overall service was a 5/5, food 5/5, ambiance 5/5. Can't wait to come back! Also they have great HH and a wide variety of wines to choose from and FABULOUS cocktails. I had the pear gimlet and also a fig ginger spice. Both fantastically curated. My man had beers.

    El Jefe Cubano Sandwich

Had the el jefe Cuban sandwich. If you're looking for a perfectly American sized portion of a meal this is the one. Crispified to perfection with every bite. Salad on side, olives in it were delicious and firm and so were the pepperoncinis. So pleasantly surprised by this meal

Does this establishment offer Happy Hour?

Not the last time I checked. But they do have certain specials.

I am running out of places with WiFi to work and enjoy bites with my trained, calm Pomeranian. Is this an option here? Sorry I am needy lol - WiFi…

Yes! The Downing is fully equipped for Commuter & Mobile Internet Workers with Free Wi-fi, power ports near seating, and outside patio seating with heaters is doggie heaven!

They said something had broke earlier and that a repair man was on his way. We started with risotto bites. And butternut squash soup. The risotto bites were delicious but the soup was lacking. The waitress said it did look a little thin today. And our issue was lack of flavor. We also got the whiskey pork tenderloin which was our favorite of that and the smothered chicken. The Brussel sprouts that come with the pork are absolutely amazing. The pork was juicy and flavorful. We finished with the crème brûlée. It was delish also, overall on our first trip I will say I will be back. Our check was 120.21 , we don't do drinks besides water since that's all we like anywhere. The ac was a fluke and the soup just needed to thicken up I think so great restaurant!!!!

The attention to detail is incredible. We started with the queso blanco, which is served in a volcanic stone bowl that keeps it perfectly warm and creamy far longer than a traditional bowl. It was absolutely delicious, and the portion was enormous. Honestly, six people could easily share it and still have plenty before the main course arrived. For our entrée, we ordered the chicken fajitas. The chicken was well-marinated, the presentation was beautiful, and both the rice and beans were excellent. Now for the few things keeping this from being a five-star experience. First, the tortillas. They tasted like packaged grocery store tortillas...think Mission brand. For me, freshly made tortillas are almost non-negotiable at a Mexican restaurant. When everything else is this thoughtfully prepared, packaged tortillas feel completely out of place. Second--and this is a hill I'm willing to die on--I ordered a Diet Coke and was told they only serve Coke Zero. I'm sorry, but those are not the same thing. Every Diet Coke fan understands this. Finally, the noise level was overwhelming. There was a soccer game on the TVs with the audio blasting throughout the restaurant. It was so loud that carrying on a conversation was difficult, and even hearing our waitress required her to lean in right next to us. This isn't a sports bar; it's a beautifully themed restaurant that happens to have a bar. The game didn't need to dominate the atmosphere. Overall, the restaurant is stunning, the food is very good, and the attention to detail is exceptional. If they started making fresh tortillas, offered Diet Coke as an option, and turned off the TV audio, this would be an easy 5+ star experience for me.

Since we were going to the show, why not go for dinner? I mean we have never been. Love that you can book reservations online. Super easy to get through the gate and it has amazing views. We were greeted by the host who was so kind. The place was super busy, I assume due to the show. So, we had to wait about 10 minutes. Table right in the middle of action... 1 min... 2 min... 7 minutes no greeting nothing and a woman walks by and says she will be right us. Cool. Thanks for letting us know. Walks past us 4 more times and nothing. The good thing is clearly someone else noticed and brought us water and said she was helping while the server got caught up. Okay. Everything will be OK. Whole ordering our drinks the server took over. Ordered drinks. App and 2 entrees. Then she was gone. 30 minutes after seating... nothing. Not even drinks yet. 32 minutes... she brings my husband's can of beer. No glass. No manhatten. She says they are working on mine. After 32 minutes (at least 20 minutes after ordering our drink)... can we have a glass? 5+ minutes later she brings me my manhattan... in a wine glass? Before I smell it I ask if its a manhattan because it looked like wine (damn good pour). Her response... I don't know. Never had one before. And still no glass. A. The Manhattan was fabulous and a ridiculously amazing pour. And for the cost... damn. Thats amazing. We decided she never rang in our drinks. Its the only thing that makes sense. It had really quieted down and the bartenders were working hard. And thats fine. But own it. Another 40 minutes and she stopped by once. Said our food was coming. But honestly haven't had a server who seemed to care less about her table in quite a while. Food came about 45 minutes after ordering. We ordered the Philly egg rolls... flavor was awesome. But they were cold. Clearly they had been sitting... for a while. Literally the cheese had melted onto each other and cooled. The entrees came at the same time. Smash burger and chicken fried chicken. Both honestly really good. The mashed potatoes were cold though... not sure if its because they werent kept warm in the prep station or if our plates just died waiting on server. Flavors were good though, including the gravy and fries. Good seasoning. We asked for ranch. Can you believe she never brought it? Nope us either. Seriously. The service was the worst we had in a while. It seemed exlusive to our table/server. I finally got her name at the end... Leandra. I am not trying to put her on blast everyone has a bad night. When my husband asked about the ranch. She said oh I forgot that too.. no apologies for that or the entire night. I said well it has been a rough night... she said yep. Here's the check. We are super nice... lots of grace... but this service made me almost want to not return. But... this is a small business trying to create something for our community. So im going to return oncs more and score is based on potential. But please owners.... staff is hard to come by, and maybe it was a rough night... but no one will survive if 30 minutes with not even drinks and cold food is acceptable. Its a beautiful space, flavorful food and great energy im very hopeful.
