Great place with a great local connection and history. The charcuterie boards are great, the wine is good, and the owners are great.

Every time my fiancee and I go to Downing, we are completely blown away! Great service, awesome atmosphere, and their food is PHENOMENAL! We try something new every time we visit and have not been disappointed (and we don't expect to). What a happy surprise! Saw the listing on Yelp, so we decided to drop in for a glass of wine & an app befor dinner somewhere else...Never made it. A GREAT addition to the Rockwall dining scene!!! The best wine selection in town...by the glass and bottle. A large wine shop is part of the restaurant with the best European selection in Rockwall by far! Also gourmet imported food items they use in their dishes, and more. Then you get to the food!...David has it going on here, like nowhere else locally. Great cheese & meat boards, interesting sandwiches, and unusual shared plates like Spanish sardines on toast...yummy! Just go...you'll be back again...We will!!! read more

Great feel, creative menu, unique concept. 2 in 1 stop for those who want a nice place to chill and enjoy a bottle & small plates. Buy a bottle on one side and take it to the other side to sip with a variety of tapas - menu updated daily. Wine by the glass is also available. Table favorite was the duck confit bean dip. Great flavors. Also enjoyed the bacon wrapped dates. The brie was lovely - served on a flaky pastry with a jam topping. Beef bresaola with pickled pears was interesting. Must try the desserts - outstanding. Plates are prepared with pride. Quaint inside with a bar area and several tables. A lovely outdoor patio area is also available. I hesitated to write this review but I'd tried to email the owners directly and it bounced back. I'd invited friends from Dallas to join us there on a Sunday - this was a few months ago now. What a disappointment. Maybe it was just a bad day but our server was borderline surly and the salads we ordered for dinner were just piles of lettuce. One of our party ordered his salad with chicken which they forgot to add. About the time we finished, they finally brought out a plate of dried out chicken. I gave them a few stars as I'd been there before and enjoyed it and I always try to support Rockwall businesses. The experience was particularly disappointing because one of our guests is a well-known Dallas chef. read more

If you haven't been here yet, you are doing yourself an injustice! This place is absolutely amazing. The food is artisan and delicious. The boards (meat and cheese are always great. The beer and wine knowledge of Jen is boundless. We just moved here and have officially made this the spot we will be bringing family and friends when they come to visit. read more

My wife and I really enjoy this place with either just us, or with some friends. It's in a great location, has nice patio area for warm or cool weather, and the food is always great! The normal menu has good stuff on it, but they also have another menu with new and very interesting things on it that never disappoint! read more

We have been looking for a place with good food and good vibes and believe me when I say this "WE HAVE FOUND IT". An incredible atmosphere. Lovely outdoor seating. Great staff, super friendly! The chef is a genius. We came two days in a row because the menu has so much wonderful variety. The wine selection is very very good. So far we have not had anything we haven't liked. Absolutely a hidden gem. Don't judge a book by its cover. You can't see the wonderful dining area and the adorable patio if you just try to sneak a peak through the glass door. Walk on in and let them show you around. Food is incredible. Great wine and beer selection. And service is top notch. The Downing has an awesome, eclectic menu. I wanted everything on it. We limited ourselves to the stuffed pequillo peppers and the meatballs. That was plenty for two of us. The shortbread dessert was also great. There is a good wine list that appears to address all palettes while not being overwhelming. The Downing is our new favorite place in the Rockwall/Rowlett area. read more

This place is phenomenal!!! I rarely leave reviews but this place is a must! Service is on point. You're never waiting for anything. Owners David and Jenni are awesome! Food is priced just right for how fantastic it is! I'm eating my way through the menu as fast as I can! Meatballs, muffuletta, sicilian salad, chicken liver mousse, croque, baked brie...I dont have a favorite as it's all so good! El jefe wine is a great house wine. Met some friends downtown at the Downing and had the "La Brujula Yellowfin Belly" and friends I must say this is the best thing I have ever tasted and was the perfect starter for a night with friends and drinks. Will definitely come back next time I'm in Rockwall. read more

Went with a friend a couple of months ago ... there was no one to greet us when we walked in but that wasn't a big deal for us when your in a small town like Rockwall its not a deal breaker just part of our laid back style here . So while as we thoroughly enjoyed browsing the multitude of gorgeous wines we made our way to the back of the bar where a few people were having drinks and so we sat ourselves .... we each ordered something different , although the food was good what REALLY made us FANS was the CHARCUTERIE BOARD being a San Diego transplant and having spent MANY years eating in Little Italy this was a wonderful and pleasant surprise the flavors of the Spanish meats and olives were a welcomed treat and long overdue for so many of us waiting for some European flavor ! These guys are great. While we had to get our order to go, great selection wines and beers. I felt like they bent over backwards for me to get me exactly what i wanted. Looking through the window, the place was spotless, the service great and at least the lady i dealt with was very polite. I ordered a few of their specialty sandwiches - they were so good. The Downing. Great food and drink with a New York flair. David and Jenni are number one hosts, and Davis our server was excellent.

Bad experiences abound with this restaurant. Have stayed away for the last few months since my previous "to go" order was a disaster. Finally decided to order and, once again, bad experience. Called the order in because online ordering needs some tweaking. I used my credit card when I ordered and signed the receipt when they brought it to us for the amount I was told over the phone. Due to our close proximity I didn't ask for delivery as I could have picked it up but they said they could bring it over. They don't open until noon, despite the fact that the sign on the door says they open at 11 am. Plan ahead if you want to eat lunch at lunchtime because it takes about 30 minutes to get two sandwiches. The turkey in my sandwich was not as good as I remembered, more like turkey lunch meat in a plastic container from the grocery store, slimy! My boss had a different sandwich and he may have enjoyed it had there not been two long black hairs accompanying the sandwich in the box, he doesn't have long black hair! Sandwiches here are pricey, not exactly worthy of the cost. To top off the entire experience they charged $3.00 additional on my credit card than I authorized, is this legal, I think not. Will I go back, absolutely not! read more
