This place is SO awesome! I am an ambiance snob, and this place blew me away with its festive decor and fun vibe! Great music, cool counter/bar seating and cozy tables. They also have a cute little store at the front where you can buy highly rated wine, unique beer and some select meats, cheeses and other delicacies. We started with a delicious meat and cheese board then shared a bunch of small plates. My favorites were the apricot Brie tart, beet salad and the pesto meatballs. Everything was delicious! The owners are so cute and friendly. The husband is the head chef and the wife is a customer service pro running around ensuring excellence! Overall, top notch FOOD, service and ambiance! **Small portions + high prices** This place is tucked away in the Rockwall Downtown Square. It's cute and quaint inside with community tables, a large selection of wines and cheeses and a small bar. It was a beautiful day so we chose to sit on the patio. Our waitress was friendly but not familiar with the menu. When I asked if the soup of the day was a 'creamy' potato, she said she didn't know. When we asked what the favorite sandwich was, she said different people like different ones and the menu changes daily. We decided to order the Muffuletta and share it. The menu says it's a FULL Muffuletta and it's priced at a hefty $14.00. When we got our plate, it was clearly a half sandwich. We each got a small triangle. The taste was fine but the portion was really small for the price. If you've ever ordered a Muffuletta at Ida Claire's, Tricky Fish, Jimmy's Italian Food Store or even Jason's Deli, you've had a good sized sandwich. You aren't hungry when you leave and you won't pay $14.00. Their Sicilian side salad was basically iceberg lettuce with red onion and a few olives. The couples at the table next to us complained about the cannolis they ordered so we skipped dessert and walked across the sidewalk and got an amazing piece of pie from Bonafide Bettie's. Probably won't go back to Downing's unless it's with friends or for just a drink. We did enjoy the sunshine on the patio and the nice location. read more

This is a must do if you are ever in Rockwall. I have been a few times with a bigger group and just a duo. If you are coming on a Friday/Saturday you will need to make a reservation. I think on Wednesdays they have a wine Wednesday special (haven't been yet but will be trying it out soon). I recommend making your reservation (if it's just two people) to sit at the bar. It's fun to interact with the staff and just has a swanky environment. The wine flights are the way to go. Pours are either incredibly generous or the stemware is playing tricks on our eyes. I'm not a beer drinker but they have plenty of craft beers to chose from. If you are a liquor drinker this is not your place but they do have wine based cocktails which are also delicious if you can curb your liquor appetite for just one night. I will be coming back soon to branch out into their sandwiches and salad. Everything is seriously so delicious. If I had to pick my favorite right now I would saw you have to order the stuffed piquillo peppers. I recommend coming here for tapas and just sharing with the group. Stopped by on a Saturday for lunch. What a great venue. We sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful weather while eating outstanding food and drinking crisp, clean beers. Staff is super helpful and friendly. The restaurant is nicely designed with a very pleasant atmosphere. We had Cubanos, Muffalettas, and Croque Madame sandwiches. All generously sized and very tasty. The portions are inconsistent though... first time I got the board with my husband it was plenty of food for us, but now it's only like 30 percent of the time does it feel like enough. Sometimes the food is a little salty but most places are scared of salt so maybe it's not the worst. A little bit of flavor tweaks to brighten up the heavier food would make it top notch. I am very partial to the Downing for multiple reasons. The food is amazing, every time I go it gets better. The owners are friendly and knowledgeable, I should know, I have known them collectively for 30 years. The atmosphere is to die for, I should know because I helped design it. It's a jewel in the Downtown area. Eat lunch, and grab a bottle to go. Beer, wine, sake, cider, and even Chocolate from "Dude, sweet chocolate " is available in the wine shop. This place is definitely a diamond in the rough! It's also a hidden diamond. From the main entrance you can hardly tell there is much of anything there. I was in the area and just happened to be curious enough to poke my head in to find a wine market with a hidden bar and restaurant in the back! I sat down for an afternoon snack and a tasty beverage. Luckily the conversations were lively and the staff extremely friendly. I can't wait to go back and explore more of the menu. If you get a chance, stop by and show some love.
