The Drake on a Saturday night with multiple wedding celebrations happening is insane to say the least. However, the experience was outstanding. From the valet attendant to the cocktail reception area, the slick servers with silver trays presenting an array of horduerves, the bartenders cranking out cocktails with class and speed.... The ballroom was spacious, ornate, with excellent acoustics, and a large dance floor! Dessert was served in a different room. All set up by Drake. I'd love to pay another visit before the summer ends for a dining experience and cocktails. read more

I stayed at The Drake about 3 years ago and it wasn't great. Corner room with king bed, definitely needed rehab/upgrades, there were many layers of paint, old, broken, cracked outlets, loud mini fridge. Fast forward, we decided to give it another try. This time we got a suite. Things were no better. There is probably 10 layers of paint on the bathroom door. The bathroom sink, toilet and floor appeared to be clean. The towels were kind of dingy, not bright white. The toilet was attached to the wall, but the caulk was separating from the wall. Looked like it would break off if you sat on it, but it was seemingly secure. There was a shower/tub combo. The soap dish was attached to the wall but dangling and unusable. The stopper was broken and tilted to the side. The metal decorative pieces around the hot/cold knobs were detached from the wall and broken. When showering the tub fills up with water. Strangely, the shower curtain had a big glob,of what appeared to be, green toothpaste. The carpet appeared to be clean, but it was a very dark brown, color, just made the room dark and uninviting. In the living room area, the ceiling paint was peeling and dangling. The sofas and chairs were a terrible brownish/black bronzy color. They were old, worn, discolored and saggy. The coffee table had wood chips missing and finish peeled off. There were two TV's. The one in the living room area was a big standard size. In front of the bed, there was an old style TV stand, the kind where you put a tube TV up top with doors to hide it and cabinet below. It was a flat screen but old, 32inch. The lobby is nice, the restaurants are nice. The rooms are in need of upgrade. Would not recommend and would not stay again until renovated. read more

Everything about this hotel and how it is run is impeccable! The front desk Send you texts updating you on things and if you need anything, it's addressed right away. Everything is clean Housekeeping does an excellent job. My only complaint was the gift shop! It was Extremely disappointing and they need to retrain some of there workers since this store actually isn't owned by the hotel but independently owned by a 3rd party. This is a very small shop, And a woman who was working there who would not stop talking to me and asking me did I like this did I wanna try on that, did I wanna buy this, did I have any questions I believe the girl walking out after I came in she did the same thing too. I really wanted to pick up a sweatshirt. And She managed to chase me out, by her bizarre & annoying behavior when I told her I was leaving because she wouldn't leave me alone her answer was just ok. I did complain to the front and I was very upset... I grew up in this neighborhood and I've been going to the Drake and it's Restaurants and stores all my life. The lovely French Room of The Drake Hotel, Chicago, was the location for a fun fancy Girl Scout tea! (May 2026) The French Room's chandeliers were crystal. The ornate ceiling columns were hand-wrought and hand-painted. The walls were covered in silk. The curtains were satin. There's a view of Lake Michigan. It's a remarkable, beautiful, regal venue. The Drake, so much could be talked about about the history, beauty, location and Real Chicago vibe! Just shared in such an incredible weekend for a wedding hosted by the Drake hotel! Let's talk about all the positives, the ball room, the cocktail reception, the service here! Incredible! Everyone is kind and welcoming. I just fell in love with the space, the design the real old school feel of the place. Now, the fall back with such an old place is that it could use some freshening up. The plumbing in our rooms, the walls are a tad thin and I could hear everything happening outside my windows. I could hear the music from the after party hosted downstairs, Mind you I'm on 2nd floor. The gym room was smaller than the suite room the bachelor had the weekend, but it was open 24hours so I'll give them credit. We had a great stay at The Drake, located on the north end of Chicago's Magnificent Mile. It wasn't perfect and, separately, I'm kind of convinced this hotel is haunted. That said, we came away fans. We visited for a wedding weekend. I don't recall if we booked as part of the wedding block, but three nights for one "Deluxe" room with a king bed on a "high" floor cost us $1,346.46 total after taxes and fees (equal to $448.82 per night). My wife did the booking through American Express Travel. We have Amex Platinum Cards and she used her Hilton Honors membership, and I think we got some perks as a result. The hotel opened in 1920. It's historic and gorgeous throughout. We felt like we had been transported back in time to a luxurious hotel in the 1920s and 1930s. They've really managed to maintain that period's look and feel. We loved the old-world grandeur. We stayed in Room 802 on the 8th floor. The room was very spacious, though felt a bit old and worn in places. Here are our gripes: 1. The room had doors that opened to reveal a bar, which was neat. However, the bar's sink was clogged. 2. The bathroom was small and lacked surface space. 3. The bathroom sink water was either too cold or too hot. It was hard to get the temperature in the middle. Plumbing needed work. 4. The toilet roll holder kept falling down. It needed to be repaired or replaced. 5. It was somewhat easy to hear our next-door neighbors on either side of us. Our room was connected to both adjacent rooms on either side of us (suites). 6. The coffee maker and mini fridge were located at the TV console. However, there was no outlet for the coffee maker. Therefore, we had to move the coffee maker to one of the nightstands to plug it in. Really odd and awkward placement. Other than that, we enjoyed the room. The bed was comfortable and there were small touches of technology, which contrasted with an old hotel, like a wireless phone charger and a tablet (which we didn't use). I actually unplugged the latter so I could plug in my laptop. Wedding events took place at the French Room (pre-wedding ceremony), Palm Court (a renowned spot known for high tea), the Gold Coast Room (wedding ceremony), and the Walton Room Ballroom (wedding lunch reception). Palm Court is really cool and has a separate listing here on Yelp, where I left another review, just for the high tea experience. The various rooms are architecturally beautiful, especially the Gold Coast Room, which is stunning. As far as the hauntings go, you can look them up, but in short there are two I read and watched videos about while we stayed here: 1. The Lady in Red. This ghost is believed to be a woman who committed suicide by jumping from the 10th floor on the hotel's opening night in 1920 after seeing her fiance dancing with another woman. Her ghost has been seen on the 10th floor and in the ballrooms. 2. The Lady in Black. In 1944, a socialite named Adele Bourne Williams was shot and killed in her apartment at the hotel by a mysterious woman in black. The assailant fled and disappeared. Despite police investigations and a gun being found, no one was ever charged with the murder. Her ghost has since been seen on the 8th floor -- yep, the same floor we stayed on! I read about this while trying to fall asleep in our bed on the 8th floor, so that was fun. To be clear, nothing funny or unusual happened during our stay on the 8th floor. A small group of us went up to the 10th floor out of my curiosity. The lighting was dimmer up there and there was a stairway that led into darkness. Creepy. Now why I may be convinced this hotel is haunted is because of what my phone's camera did in the Gold Coast Room and the Walton Room Ballroom. The chandelier lights constantly and consistently flickered in both rooms. It was weird and I have never experienced anything like that with my phone before (and I take a lot of pictures and videos in all sorts of environments). When it comes to ghosts, I'm generally a skeptic, but this made me reconsider. Maybe it was just banding or a strobe effect caused by my camera's shutter speed interacting with the frequency of old dimmed bulbs. :) Finally, we had hotel credits which could be used at the coffee shop downstairs, Lavazza Espression. Like Palm Court, I reviewed the cafe separately too. read more

4 stars. A beautiful historic hotel. Lots of character & charm. Valet parking is available but expensive. More affordable self-parking is located just down the street at the 900 Shops. Easy walk down the sidewalk and across the street. The bathroom has virtually no counter space, which makes getting glam done a bit more challenging. Take note: the shower and bathtub operate with separate knobs--be sure to turn on only the one you intend to use. The in-room iron was low quality. Bad. If you anticipate ironing, bring your own. One standout feature was the spacious walk-in closet--perfect for hanging garments and storing luggage. There's even a full-length mirror mounted on the inside of the door, which is a nice touch. Overall, it was a great stay, and I would return. I can't confidently say it's worth the price, but I'm glad to have experienced it at least once. read more

The Drake is a historic, vintage hotel that is loaded with history and architectural details. The ground level arcade has a few shops and galleries and is fun to work through. The Coq d'Or is a plush bar with excellent food and boozy executive cocktails. The lobby and the tea room are must stops during the Xmas holiday season. The rooms are, overall, a bit long in the tooth, and while they have that vintage feel they also have that old, frayed feel. The heating/cooling system is also quite old, and some rooms can run uncomfortably warm. read more

My spouse and I stayed here for our mini-spring break.....I really liked at ALOT!!! We had the Vista Suite, which as an absolute BLAST. You can see the glorious, glamorous and grandiose history of the hotel all around you at every step! They even have the signatures from numerous celebrities. These range from Muhammad Ali to Princess Diana. They truly are a must see and highly recommended!! Now the only serious feedback I could offer is the following: - Some SERIOUS renovations are needed throughout the entire building. Once they do this, The Drake will be a MAJOR COMPETITOR with its surrounding neighbors such as The RITZ Carlton and Waldorf-Astoria - The water pressure is SERIOUSLY out of control! Best way to describe this is LITERALLY hot and cold as that's what it was. The fluctuations got so bad, we got burned on our backs. - Food options are terrible! Did you know an illustrious hotel such as The Drake doesn't even offer breakfast except only weekends?! They also have a restaurant called The Oak Room, but the experience left ALOT to be desired!! Overall I would still recommend the place and give it high stars for the amazing management they have from Tate and German. The good: Stunning property, unbeatable location, and a truly wonderful, helpful staff. If you book, definitely spring for a high-floor lake-view room. The bad: For a 4-star hotel, we expected better attention to detail. Housekeeping left us an almost-empty soap bottle on day one and never refilled it, leaving us out of soap by the final morning. Even worse was the heavy, muddy/musty smell in the room caused by lake humidity. I've stayed at plenty of waterfront properties, and this was the worst-smelling room I've experienced at this tier--some 3-star hotels smell fresher. We stayed in the Executive Suite, which was incredibly spacious, well-kept, and very comfortable--perfect for both relaxing and entertaining. This was a very interesting stay! My friend and I stayed here for the New Year, and I was happy to see what the infamous Drake Hotel had to offer. They still had this very beautiful tree up in the main atrium. It was very busy in the lobby with not only guests, but there was also a wedding happening! It was really cute. The hotel had the couple's photo up, so their guests would know where to head. The hotel is secure in that you can only go up in the hotel if you use the key in the elevator. One of the elevators has a bench in it, haha. I will say that the room, while nice, was a little bit of a let down? There's no mini fridge, no outlets remotely close to the bed, and speaking of remotes, our room didn't have one! It took an hour for the hotel to finally bring us one. They did have a bluetooth speaker to help us pass the time. The bed was comfortable, though, the bathroom was nice, and it was a comfortable stay. They also have a downstairs with like a maze of shops, restaurants, and a tribute to some very famous people who've stayed there. There's a lot to explore in this place. Overall, I'd recommend staying here. It's right in the heart of gold coast. Michigan Ave is so accessible from here. read more

The Drake is a really fun hotel to stay in if you plan on taking a weekend in Chicago. It's close to a lot of fun things to do. The hotel staff was helpful at the desk. They do not have a concierge's person keep that in mind. You will have to be your own guide. Buddy's for live jazz is a fantastic spot and the Harry Potter store isn't a far ride for you fans out there. I really wanted to love this hotel. I was so excited when I found out we would be staying here as this is the CLASSIC Drake hotel! Everything is old and outdated (which I can appreciate at times) but the rooms were just EH...and had a musty odor. The kicker of the whole stay was my mom leaving her wallet and cash behind and being told nothing was left in the room. After she called security AGAIN days later they finally told her housekeeping found the wallet, but the surprise? No cash inside. The security team actually somehow forwarded the house keepers message to my mother basically talking bad about my moms items left behind saying why would she keep that shit? Sorry Drake, but your housekeepers are sketchy! Make sure you don't leave anything behind at this hotel. read more

I made my first trip to Chicago in May and my friend and I stayed at The Drake. I don't think I'll be able to stay anywhere else now as it felt like home! The hotel was located on the north end of the Magnificent Mile. I liked the location because it was a quiet street but a few blocks away and you could be in the thick of the city. Bonus, my view was pretty nice too. We had to walk up a grand stair case to the front desk. Wow, the lobby was quite stunning. With a restaurant at one end and the front desk at the other. And you must stop in the speakeasy type bar/lounge on the ground floor. In the evening there was live piano music. Loved this spot! The food was yummy and the vibe will take you back (even before my time lol). My room was clean and quite spacious with a walk in closet. And the decor fit the old school vibe. Table was a bit small and wobbly, but we made do. Service wasn't super friendly or kind honestly, that was the only thing that demoted the experience. Our server seemed almost impatient and super aloof - they didn't explain the menu nor show any grace when we had questions which was a little frustrating. Food and drink were okay. Classic hotel with matching ambiance and beautiful views both inside and out. I love a place that has the feel of some sort of movie about regal folk being filmed. Try a restaurant or 2 within the property. If you are planning on walking around Chicago to take in the city this spot is close enough that you can. It was still chilly for us and the nearby beach was not being frequented in the time of year, but it was very close by. I'd imagine in warmer weather it would be bustling. The hotel has modern amenities from a century ago so if you enjoy historic items there are many treats. Even with this in mind, the updates are good enough for a comfortable stay. read more

What to say about this classic hotel? Well, I can begin with the idea that I have known this hotel most of my life, but never stayed there until this weekend. There was a good deal on it and I was in need of a place to stay during my business trip. I had recently started staying at The Palmer House and loved it. Since the Drake had the same sort of old school legacy, I gave it a go. I'm not unhappy, but I'm not thrilled either. It's located at the top of the Magnificent Mile next to Water Tower Place. This is about as ritzy and posh of a location as I would want. However, the hotel itself seemed like it had seen better days. My room was old and hadn't had the high-level rehab that other classic places have experienced. The pillows were also rather thin and inadequate. I think Hilton could spruce the joint up a notch for the price point. Still, I don't have anything really negative to say other than there are better options in that range. So, after years of driving past the large sign, I guess my imagination of what was inside was a bit let down. The staff were fine. Sorry, nothing more to add. Judge for yourselves. read more

Stayed here for a few nights in August, a couple in a their 40's and a momma in her 80's. We appreciated the age of this place and who stayed here in the past, but the only part we enjoyed was the lounge, Coq D'Or. And this stinky, uncomfortable sentiment was voiced by the one in her 80's, too. This place smells musty/funky (my husband crudely said it smells like a rat died in between the walls), the rooms are weirdly laid out, the bathrooms are tiny, and you'll hear the wedding DJ and every song if you're there on a Friday/Saturday night. The beds and pillows are chintzy, you have to pay extra to get a mini-fridge in your room, and again . . . the funky smells. Coq D'Or is the best part. Comfy, cozy, excellent servers, food & drink. Staying at this historic old hotel made me sad, as it is in terrible disrepair. For what should be an iconic property, it is very disappointing. I love the history and beautiful common spaces, but the rooms are abysmal, with peeling wallpaper, ugly old furniture, and bathrooms that need help. I stayed here 20 years ago, and it still seemed okay back then. In 2026, comparing it to other historic flagship properties like the Plaza in New York, the owners are neglecting a gem and the Drake deserves a very thorough overhaul. I would not recommend this hotel until that happens. read more

I said I don't recall being charged for seltzer water, out of your machine . I didn't order bottled water. How much more would it be if it was bottled water. I've never paid seltzer water. This is my husband's and mine first time in Chicago. This hotel was definitely a great choice for our five day stay. We had this beautiful water view in such a very peaceful area of the city. I don't know why, but I was amazed there was a beach. So apparently this hotel is 100 years old and that definitely caught my attention because I love staying in places that have history. The architectural, the environment of this hotel was just breathtaking. I can't even imagine the story is that could be told if this hotel could talk. There is a very fancy steakhouse restaurant and also a coffee shop that are both located in inside hotel so you don't have to leave. There's also a couple of little stores if you need to do a little bit of shopping but nothing that interest me. Our room was very roomy and the king size bed was comfortable with no complaints on sleep. The Drake is one of those old, opulent hotels that retains a lot of goodwill from folks who love Chicago history, or have fond memories of visiting with family. It is over a century old and was built on land that was acquired from the holdings of the late Potter Palmer. It was undoubtedly one of the top hotels in the city--Princess Diana stayed here, for goodness sake; I'm not sure if any other hotel in the city can boast having had true royalty stay at their hotel and clearly has built a reputation of luxury. It has other interesting (and colorful) bits of history: it was the first home of WGN, and the base Frank Nitti of the Outfit used some rooms as a base of operations. Japanese and British royalty have partaken in afternoon tea here. So it's certainly got a high reputation to uphold. The Palm Court is a lovely dining room, and a nice place to enjoy tea. During the holidays, you'll find that it's booked by generations of Chicagoans who are continuing or establishing a holiday tradition (our waiter said that they have about 26,000 folks over the holidays for tea). Carolers and harpists provide the entertainment to make an elegant and fun time. Where they fall down in a major way, though, is accessibility and to some extent service. To get to the lobby, you have to walk up the stairs or go down the hall to find the elevator. Not terribly convenient for folks who use a wheelchair and perhaps even less so for those who don't use a wheelchair but have mobility difficulties. When I came in, there was no one on the entry floor to tell me where to go to get to Palm Court or the lobby--there were signs, but the check-in desks are somewhat hidden from the vantage point of the entry floor so I couldn't figure out where the "lobby" was. If you're disabled and plan to go to Palm Court, you might be taken around this back way that is for employees eyes only, and I'm really tired of disabled folks being forced to go through back doors or hidden pathways to be able to enter a building or make use of a facility. They say it's due to the historic status of the hotel, but... really? In 2023, we're still using that excuse? All of these rooms use modern plumbing and have been updated many times over; you're not walking into a room with fixtures and styling circa 1920. So again, how is that they can't make the place accessible? I can't say I wouldn't be back.
