Really good food, but the ordering system is through Toast Tab (?), which means everyone is staring at their phones trying to figure out how to order on a single tab without over-ordering because someone enters all the orders while everyone else orders their own. And my phone wasn't getting a signal at all, which wasn't helpful. We asked for real menus and got one for the table to share between three people. And when the brunch DJ came on at noon, the music was so incredibly loud that we had to shout to hear each other across the table, despite the restaurant being half empty. Food was okay, we ordered an app and not even half way through the rest of our food came out...so no time in between maybe skip the app- service was lacking. A mandatory tip of 20% is tacked onto your tab. Even if you only interact with your serve one time. You order everything via the Toast App, which is kind of annoying, but I guess I get it. Also the 20% tip isn't an issue if we actually got some good service. I guess im glad I tried the place.... So that I could not go again. Overpriced food, cocktails were ok. My bartender wasn't attentive and my food took over 1 hour and a half..and I do get you're "short staffed" or "the kitchen is behind" just give me something so I know I'm being wanted in a way. Had a reservation for restaurant week that I put a $15 deposit down for. I was told this was applied toward my final bill but it wasn't, my card was charged separately from what we paid total. This wouldn't have been as big a deal if the service and food didn't absolutely suck. We got our first two courses immediately back to back, and at this time the restaurant was quite empty and had just started to fill up. An hour went by before we were even CHECKED ON. I had to flag down my server to ask where our entrees were to which he then asked "I'm sorry do you still want them?" What the hell? Were they ever being made that whole time? My friend and I were starving so even though we were totally over it we said we wanted the food. Must've been another 15 minutes later when we finally got the most overcooked salmon with dry farro and the chewiest, lukewarm duck breast ever. The manager did end up comping the two restaurant week meals, but with the deposit, 4 drinks and one pasta dish that my other friend had, we still paid $117, gratuity already included, which as a bartender who doesn't get this luxury, I was very peeved about because I actually have to give satisfactory service to get that, instead of being guaranteed it. Our server was sweet and did seem to care to mend things after I finally said something, but I still would've really appreciated him noticing much sooner that we were sitting with empty drinks and nothing in front of us for as long as we were and addressing it. For some reason they apparently think having a DJ play music during brunch at a volume so high that you can't even hear the person sitting next to you makes up for their average menu. We were sitting at the bar and I even requested the music be turned down but it never was. Potatoes were cold and over cooked... dry and dark brow almost black. They obviously had been sitting in a warming tray since prep that morning, they certainly weren't cooked fresh. The lobster omelette I had was bland and tasteless. Coffee was also served lukewarm until I got a refill which was slightly hotter. What looked like homemade English muffins were good as well as the Manhattan I ordered but certainly not worth putting up with potential hearing loss, just for the illusion of a "lit" establishment. Not sure why anyone would want to go to brunch or lunch with blaring music unless you've already been up all night partying. Not to mention the fact that customers speaking loudly to be heard and tables close to one another probably spreads more viruses. The owners should decide whether they want to be a club or a restaurant. P.S. Maybe younger people just don't talk anymore, but in that case they might as well skip the added cost of the DJ and let their younger customers stare at their phones with earpieces in, like they usually do. read more

Such a vibe! Came here on a Sunday during my visit to chicago and I really enjoyed it. Make sure you get a reservation or you probably won't get a seat. Snagged some bar seats though. I miss Merchant!... and Dunlay's!... and Boulevard Cafe! First time visit last night for dinner. Very happy to see something took over this space after Merchant closed during the pandemic. Tasteful renovation, good vibes (definitely catering to a younger crowd), & a very nice outdoor dining space on the circle. Sadly, the food wasn't memorable, everything is overpriced, and those weren't even the biggest grievances I had with this place. FOOD: Street Corn ($7) was awful - Far too salty & beyond overkill with the lime juice. Mac & Cheese ($8) was bland & soupy. South of the Border salad ($10- without protein) was ok. The components were fine, but the dressing was basically flavorless oil. Tacos (shrimp, skirt steak, duck carnitas, birria) were average at best, & that's being very generous. Worse, they ranged from $4.50 - $5.00 each. There are plenty other local places nearby that offer far superior quality (& more filling!) tacos for $3 - $4 or less. Save your money. The only food item anyone really enjoyed was the Honeylicious fried chicken sandwich ($13 - no side). ATMOSPHERE: Again, good vibes & we really liked the music the DJ was playing (kudos to the DJ!). Unfortunately, it was so loud in the restaurant we couldn't hear each other at our own table and struggled to hear anyone else that came by our table (the facemasks don't help). This was early on a Thursday night. They need to control the volume at appropriate levels based on the day/time. Had it not been for the rain, we would've asked to get moved outside to the patio area. SERVICE: This was our single biggest issue with this place. With Covid, I get why places are trying to transition to a more hands-off approach. Scanning a bar code to pull up a menu on your phone is fine. However, as many people have pointed out, this place uses the Toast tab system. We found the entire experience to be very cold & impersonal. There's no conversation with your server; no attempt to offer suggestions, opinions, or recommendations. In fact, aside from dropping off your food & occasionally checking to see if you need more water, the server is essentially nothing more than a bus boy. It left us all feeling awfully detached. Moreover, walking out I found myself asking "why would I consider coming back to this place?" Having spent 1/2 my life working in restaurants, I usually tip a minimum of 20% and typically more based on the quality of service. Again, with this Toast system, everything is done online on your phone. When you go to close out your tab, the first thing it prompts you for is your preferred tip amount. There are convenient buttons to select (15%/18%/20%...), or you can input an amount manually. That's great. Convenient. However... what they DON'T make at all clear is that they've already added a full 20% Gratuity onto your bill total. No prompt. No ability to edit, at least not that we were aware of at the time. In fact, I was completely unaware of this add-on 20% tip until well after we left and I received an email with an itemized receipt. So our "server" ultimately received a 40% tip even though we may have exchanged a total of 20 words with him over the course of our meal, 1/2 of which no one could hear. I find this all extremely deceiving. Needless to say, we won't be returning to this place unless they make some serious changes. read more

I am really disappointed in my experience I've had here at Duplex. I planned my little sister's 29th birthday. I chose Duplex because I've heard nothing but good things. This experience makes me wish I had chosen a 4C brunch like Fremont or 80 Proof. We had a reservation of 21 people. Paid $105 for this reservation. Which is a bit bizarre to me since it did not go towards the bill. My experience there was absolutely TERRIBLE. To start is with the waitress. She was not pleasant in the least bit. Little to no smiles and welcome. We had to always look for her when we needed anything. Very slow refilling the mimosas, offering water at our table, not personable and quite sassy. Than the food. Wow. I've visited Duplex once and I remember amazing food. I'm not sure if there are new chefs or not. I had the chicken and waffles. The waffles were soggy and soft. The chicken literally tasted like breaded raw chicken. No seasoning and the consistency was unbearable. 3 of our guests had to send their meals because they received it cold. My husband ordered the steak and eggs. Ordered it to be medium well. Came well done. Such a bad situation. Our reservation was set for 1:15 when we were seated. We didn't receive our bottomless mimosas until 1:42. At 3:00 we proceeded to order and was told no because brunch ended at 3:00. We looked over at another table and they were getting bottles. It is fair that if you make a reservation during brunch you should be able to get your full 2 hours. Again, 4C restaurants follow those guidelines which is at the best service of guests. If not, after 1:00 no brunch reservations should be available. We spoke with a manager that stated all age can do is give us a glass of champagne. She as well was not pleasant and didn't do what was best. Everyone stated they wish we had chosen another restaurant and that the food was subpar. Do not recommend. read more

Went to the Duplex for brunch - food was great and cocktails were alright. However, you order everything from a QR code so the servers are essentially food runners. Also, there are 'service charges' that are not explained by the servers which after checking my receipt said that it was an automatic 20% gratuity. I did not realize this until I got home and I had left a 20% cash tip on the table. I went back and they gave back the cash tip which was really appreciated. But I feel like an automatic 20% gratuity for a server who only runs the food is a little high in the first place. Since it's a new place, I am hopeful they will figure these types of things out so I can come back in the future. read more

You start your tab, pre-pay and can close out your tab without waiting on a server. Mimosa Kit gives you the best value if you're able to stay longer than your 90 minute reservation. Michelle was communicative with me via email when planning and went the extra mile moving my friends and I to the front couch section when we still had 3 bottles of champagne to finish instead of pushing us out the door when our 2 hours was up. We came here last week. Since I have no work today I will make a review about our experience in this restaurant. We sat on the couch and the couch was soft and comfortable. I don't like the atmosphere here. It's dim and I must prefer good lighting. I find good in some of their food. I can't remember what the name of a food with chicken is but I don't like its chicken. It's too hard for me and it is not cooked soft. The flavor was good but I must prefer juicy and soft chicken. One thing that I like here is their burger. The meat was pure meat and it was really good and tasty. The bun was not oily so another point for me. When you bite the burger you will feel the intense flavor of it. During our visit, the two menus were from 2 Korean Girls and Space Cow. I got the Orion Burger while my partner got the "You spicy huh?" We both loved our choices. We we're excited to try this restaurant as it was recommended to us. We were greeted by Alex, he was amazing, cheerful & provided 10/10 service. The issue started when it came time to order and the ordering system was glitching. After sev issues, we were greeted by Le' Quionne -the owner. He was very nonchalant, dismissive and narcissistic. He did nothing to resolve the issues or rectify the situation. I also disagreed with the fact he talked about his employee Alex horribly and his entire presence was disgusting. My advice would be treat your customers with respect and understand without customers you have NO BUSINESS. We traveled from Florida and I'll never ever come back and support this business. If you're considering going here, be prepared to be dismissed if you have a issue. read more
