Mom went here when she was still doing rehab, before she was able to be released back home. I took away a star because of some things that bothered my mom and I, but overall, mom liked the place, and they took good care of her during a hard time. My mom loved the food, and eating meals in the dining room and watching TV there. She would talk to her room mate about anything and everything. Mom loved the people who did physical therapy, and the patience and motivation that they brought to the process. Mom loved the times when they did "Happy Feet", and she would tell me, "Oh Mijo, you missed happy feet today!" Mom did mention that some of the staff would be hurried and impatience when changing her (the night shift). They didn't give me the date of when her Medicare benefit was depleted, and the place looked a little shabby, especially the bathroom between her room and the next. While this place wasn't my first place initially, I'm glad we went here. read more

I wanted to stop in on yelp and leave a review. As our parents and grandparents get older lives change and it is scary. Dealing with nursing homes and skilled facilities can be intimidating if you don't know what to expect. My grandfather has been a patient at Earl Wood for about two weeks now. The ladies and the doctors, nurses, CNA's and staff have been a wonderful help. I'm grateful for Cristina, Adriana and Maryane have been wonderful in facilitating all my request for my grandpa. I come daily before work, on my lunch and some nights after work. My grandfather is always clean, fed and alert. I wish I could move my mom here as well. I recently visited Earlwood in Torrance as I was preparing to have my mom checked in for recovery and physical therapy. Before committing, I wanted to see the place for myself -- and honestly, I'm really glad I did. From the moment I walked in, the experience just didn't feel right. The lobby was dark and gloomy, creating a really unpleasant and unwelcoming first impression. The young lady at the front desk had a mask on, which is totally fine, but I had to greet her first -- she didn't introduce herself or even ask my name. It just felt... cold. I asked to tour the facility and see where my mom would be staying, but I was immediately taken aback by the overall condition. The smell throughout the building was extremely strong and unpleasant, the lighting was poor, and the overall atmosphere just didn't feel clean or cared for. There were a couple of staff members who seemed kind and compassionate, which I appreciated, but overall the environment made me very uneasy. I always try to give places a fair chance, especially after reading mixed reviews, but first impressions really do matter -- and this one was hard to ignore. I completely understand that sometimes families are limited by insurance or cost when it comes to care options, but a facility like this should still meet a basic level of cleanliness, warmth, and dignity for the people staying there. This place truly needs to be reviewed and investigated to ensure residents are being cared for in a safe, sanitary, and compassionate environment. read more

Where do I begin? My grandmother was sent to this care facility at the beginning of this year; against our own best wishes, because it was the only contracted facility that would accept her given our circumstances. We decided to look on the bright side because they had recently remodeled their physical therapy facilities. Great! But once she was admitted, that's when our laundry list of regrets began. The food wasn't worth serving to a dog, the rooms were severely outdated and unclean. On top of everything, however, the Director of Nursing and wound care team were a nightmare to work with. I was with my grandmother every other day (if not every day) and I'm so glad I was. Had I not been there, she would not have gotten anything she needed when she needed it. When my grandmother was discharged, we were given every impression that she was physically ready to come home under my care. Only to find out, she couldn't walk at all. We got her halfway into the car before we had to yell for help because she was falling out of the car seat and couldn't hold herself up. Thank God for the EMTs just inside the building who had been there by chance. They helped us get her into the car and we rushed her home. I can assuredly say that her health deteriorated while at this facility. The only saving grace were the few Nurses and CNAs that had genuine bedside manner and compassion, key word, few. Besides them, this place was somewhere nobody wanted to be, patients, employees, and visitors alike. As a family member, caretaker, and overall advocate for my grandmother, I was appalled to have fingers wagged in my face completely disregarding my concerns about the "care" she was being given. They are horrible with family communication and care coordination. I would not wish my worst enemy to be placed here, and I severely question any positive reviews posted under this establishment. read more

This place is my greatest nightmare. There is no care. The food smells so bad one can't eat it. I have leukemia and a broken back and I laid here for almost 24 hours begging for a pain pill before I finally got one and that was only because a physical therapist came in my room, took what look at me as I said you look like you're in pain And I told her I am where I was and then I told her ask for pain medication since I got here she left and said she would take care of it. I haven't seen her since. I would not send my dog to this place. I've gotta find a way to get out of here. They are asking me about office experience here. There is no office experience. I spent more time than I wanted here; it wasn't what I expected, it was better. I dispared at the diet imposed, but it was mostly what I needed. Best of all I took advantage of the Occupational/Physical Therapy Dept. Arline's crew was amazing. They started most people in the morning and well into the day. Kelly and Jake found me a routine. Recovering from limb loss, I needed to get my heart moving. Their machines took my slack energy, and kept me busy. I have them to thank for my necessary upper arm strength. They deseerve this recognition, as do some of the nursing staff who kept me going forward. Thank-you. read more

Staff is amazing. There's a strong Latin influence which amazes and delights me because I love practicing Spanish. There is a sense of merriment and festivity at all levels. The facility is immaculate and the meals are you delicious. And it seems like anything you want you can get. Personally I want good and plenty with this candies but that's probably a bridge too far. Earlwood is not the fanciest or the most modern,skilled nursing facility but Maricela who greeted me the first night it was magical. I felt like I had found my best friend. And Vicki the activities Director when she was gone, you could tell there was a big hole in the activities. She really rocked it! She always was enthusiastic and extremely energetic and interacted with thepatients. She is wonderful! Bernell had the kindest manner when he interacted with us. He is fantastic! Kelly and Luke were my primary PT individuals. They made sire I got the intense workouts I needed to prepare for returning home. I sent many thank you messages to the chef-I enjoyed many of the lunches and dinners she prepared for us. read more

My mother-in-law was transferred from Torrance Memorial Emergency room on February 2nd to rehabilitate at The Earlwood because she was having difficulty walking. Her stay was from February 2nd through February 20th. She was well cared for there and enjoyed her stay. She has been to many of these types of facilities, and this one was one of her favorites based on the the kindness of the staff, responsiveness to her needs and, very important to her, the food. In particular, Jennifer, Earlwood's case manager, went above and beyond in order to ensure her well being and care, which we truly appreciated. As a side note, Earlwood does not have patient phones so I would advise ensuring that your loved one has access to a cell phone if you would like to be able to communicate with them. No facility is perfect, however, based on the many facilities she has stayed in, we would recommend this one, as well as be happy to have her return there if it becomes necessary again. read more

Its a good short term facility the staff are great a good handful of nurses doing a great job (some others not so much) with many residents some times 7 to 11 at a time. Now again night shift has left alot to be desired cna wise by our room i cant speak of others, and a couple lvns, There were 3 night lvns that rocked my little corner. read more

My grandmother was in this facility for a short period of time ,we had to take her home because she was neglected pretty much all the time , call light would take about 30 mins to hour for it be answered , if she wanted to use her bed commode , the nurses would tell her she has a diaper on, she simply went there for rehab , how was she expected to get better under those circumstances, her medicine would not be given on time and some days she wouldn't get her medicine , at times I would see only one nurse for the whole facility , and this was either morning or afternoon. That's when we decided that it was best to take her home , but we wanted to bring our concerns up to the head nurse , all we heard was she was to busy , we never heard back from any management. Please do not bring your loved ones to this facility. It's pure evil and neglect! On the positive side . The rehab team did everything they could for my grandmother. -0/10 stars . When it comes to the food , my dogs would eat better that what they serve there . If we asked for pancakes , it wasn't available or it looked like someone chewed it and spit it right back and placed it on the plate . One day she had fish for lunch . The fish was so overcooked , the fork wouldn't pass through. On top the facility is so old and out dated with cockroaches. Please think twice before you bring your loved ones. read more

Absolutely horrible. Patients are ignored and staff has major attitude problems. Patients are expected to know all the ins and outs of the facility even though they have never been there before. The patients are there because they need help which they have to fight to get. This was our second loved one that was in this facility and treated the same way but 5 years apart so the problem seems to be the normal not the exception. read more

The staff here was awesome, Leyla, Tania, Merisela, Miranda and Twanna came to work like they really enjoyed doing an being CAs with your best interest in mind I was treated with respect felt safe an secured and put a smile on your face. These CA=Nurses Assistant or aids I felt like 98% at least were very nice it just that 5 mentioned above I look forward to during my stay Kathy, Brent and Lionel LVN made it easy taking my Meds and I hate taking meds. My sister brought me a turkey sandwich from Sprouts deli counter, to make up for the cold, disgusting meals served here. I'm at the end of the hall, in the last bed, so my food is never better than lukewarm My TV doesn't work. The thermostat is broken, so my room is a chilly 60 degrees. The wall next to my bed has a 7'x10' uninsulated window, that bleeds in the cold. Other than that, no complaints. read more

My mother has stayed at Earlwood Center for over 2 and half years. This is my second review of The Earlwood Center since 6/23/22. The following are improvements and changes that I have noticed: 1. There is a new administrator at The Earlwood Center named Rithy Thong. He has been hard working, understanding and friendly. Since he was hired, there have been improvements in facility and staff level. 2. The facility has gone through major renovations and improvements. 3. Victoria Villanueva is the new Activities Director. She has been taking care of and trained my mother who is 102 years old. When we need any kind of help at Earlwood Center, we always approach her first. She is always so willing to support us if she can. We are really appreciative of her efforts. Although there are many excellent staff working in the facility, I would like to name and commend a few at this time: 1. Karla Rodriquez (CNA) has always been very responsible taking care of my mother. She gets her up in the morning and gets her ready for Victoria's classes and activities. She always wants to do the best job that she can. 2. Evangeline Cinque (CAN) takes care of my mother during the third shift. She always provides excellent advice and offers extra support whenever she can. 3. Angie Enriquez, CNA Supervisor, has been very understanding and offered support when we needed it. 4. Kia Michens (CNA) has been responsible and very pleasant. She cheers up my mother during her busy working schedule. I would recommend their services and caring staff to anyone who is looking for an assisted living facility. read more

My mother broke her foot July 9th 2020 was sent to Earlwood for rehabilitation for her foot which she had surgery on prior to arriving, able to speak, have conversation, call & let me know what she needed me to bring when I would come to visit , I was only able to see and talk to her through a glass door on facetime fue to covid Mid September, my mom's health started declining, being she had the beginning of Alzheimers & Dementia I had heard that someone with that who's gets put under for surgery could make the Alzheimers & Dementia possibly worse. My mom died November 29th 2020 Less than 5 months later from being admitted, she died feom Sepsis, asphyxiation & Pneumonia. In my personal opinion, I do not feel my mother was cared for in which is why she is no longer here with us. (She only went there for rehabilitation for a broken foot) read more

My dad has been at Earlwood since Nov. 2022. My dad is bed bound and needs total assistance with everything, including eating, brushing his teeth etc. I didn't know what to expect when my dad was discharged from the hospital and placed at Earlwood. A few months ago I was notified by the dietician that my dad's weight had dropped significantly and she wanted to come up with a plan to increase his weight. I met with the dietician (I can't remember her name), case manager (Jennifer) and the Director of nursing (Raymond Latayan). The dietician noted that my dad was to have an Ensure plus, at least once a day to help him gain weight. My dad informed me that he was not getting an Ensure once a day, he would only get it maybe 2 or 3 times a week. Another issue I was having, was that my dad wasn't getting his teeth brushed everyday. That was unacceptable! I addressed my concerns to Raymond. He immediately called in the person that was in charge of the CNA staff, and 2 other staff members, I forgot their names and title. The charge person for the CNA(s) assured me that my dad would get his Ensure Plus daily and that his teeth would be brushed daily. Raymond told me to contact him anytime, If I ever had a concern or issue regarding my dad. Raymond, made me feel supported in my concerns. He has always shown compassion and concern for my dad's health and well being. When my dad gained a few pounds, he informed me of the good news. A few weeks ago, I had to make the hard decision to place my mom at Earlwood. It's never easy when you have to make the decision to place a loved one in a nursing facility. My mom became bed bound because she needed double knee replacement but she wasn't in good health to have the surgery. I called Raymond to inform him that I needed help in placing my mom at Earlwood. He put me in touch with Margie who is in charge of admittance. Margie moved mountains to get my mom into Earlwood and I am forever grateful! Thank you Margie! Once my mom arrived, (she arrived around 9pm), Raymond was right there, even though it was after hours! He made sure my mom was settled in and taken care of. Sadly, my mom passed on 10/24/2023. While visiting my dad I also wanted to personally inform Raymond and Margie of my mom's passing. Margie was on vacation and to my utter shock and disbelief, I was informed that Raymond no longer works there. I was truly sad to hear the news! Raymond has a kind spirit and a very caring, loving heart. He truly cares for his patients and it shows in how he goes above and beyond to make sure they have the best care! Raymond, I appreciate your dedication, your kind and caring spirit. You presence at Earlwood will truly be missed! read more

Need to hire more help and give better nursing response time to patience's.when you ask for diaper change it takes a long time to get changed and ask for painkiller medicine for pain in my amputated leg and have been for almost two hours and still waiting, told for almost 7days that it's to cold in the room but nothing done. What's going on.need big improvement for a reason and I don't wanna add a star still waiting to get my diaper change. Need to train nurses better. Food lousy. Need to improve read more

My mother was transferred to the Earlwood from the hospital. When I walked in, I was shocked about how much of a dump it is. The TV's look like computer monitors from the 1990's. After i got over my shock, I realized that the staff are terrific. Everyone was professional and very nice and responsive. The PT and OT she received was excellent. I would have given 4 stars except that they literally lost all of the new clothes I brought in for her. I brought a jacket and shoes for her the day before discharge. The case manager, Jean said they couldn't find her nice jacket. After I got really angry, they were able to find it. read more

UPDATE: I wanted to take a moment to update my review of "The Earlwood Care Center/Genesis, Torrance. I left an outstanding review a while back, and now that I have been here a couple months, I wanted to tell you. This place is STILL OUTSTANDING. The care I have received here has STILL been over the top! Usually, (After the "Honey Moon" period wears off) one might find things differently. The level of care I have received is STILL OUTSTANDING. The meals are great, the staff is positive, upbeat, outgoing and professional. They encourage social interaction with GREAT activity's (The "Entertainment" Director "Nora") is great....there have been at least 3 LIVE MUSICAL Entertainers that have visited, and I won't even get into all the OTHER social activities she plans (outings, bingo, games etc). The food is REALLY GOOD. The kitchen will even go to the trouble of making you something you LIKE if you ask. Feel like an "Ice cream", just ask. Medically speaking, the care is great. EVERYONE is checked in on, meds are passed on time and correctly, and I have seen a lot of compassion here. Sometimes, a person just needs a hand to hold while someone listens. The staff here ALWAYS take time to do just that. Lots of compassion. In the almost 3 months I have been here, I have never felt like they were in a "Hurry", or understaffed. The Paitent to staff ratio is well in favor of the Paitent, and SOMEONE is always available to help at a moment's notice. Push that nursing light button, and they are right there. The rooms are comfortable, the conference room (Really nice, with a fireplace to boot) is available if you need a little privacy with your family, and the center courtyard is a GREAT place to relax, heal, and get some sun. Like I said, after almost 3 months here (I was hit by a car while walking) I have no complaints. My care (PT/OT) everything has been so well organized, I'm progressing fast in my healing. The Earlwood is the WORST skilled nursing facility to have your loved one at. Please DO NOT choose this facility for rehab!! The Administrators are TERRIBLE. I knew from reading the Yelp reviews they were going to be a problem. When our Mom was first sent to this location they told us we couldn't see her for 10 days because they had a COVID breakout. Then why the hell would you accept patients?? They only have one case manager who is all over the place trying to manage all the patients. There is no one ever at the front desk consistently to answer the phone when you want to make an appointment for a visit. The doctor that comes to see the patients attempted to discharge my mother early and she was nowhere near ready to leave the facility. Upon my Mom's arrival at the facility THEIR staff did not complete a clothing inventory list, nor did they provide her intake paperwork until late, now they have STOLEN her clothes and don't want to reimburse us for these items. Unfortunately, I had my Dad transferred to this god AWFUL facility to be with my Mom because he was struggling in his skilled nursing facility and while there he escaped the facility twice and fell down because there was no supervision. He lost his glasses in their facility and again because THEIR staff DID NOT complete a clothing inventory upon his arrival, they do not want to reimburse us for the cost. They don't take any responsibility for NOT doing their job! The only good thing about this facility are the dedicated nurses who show up every day to take care of the patients. read more

My mother was sent here after a bad infection. She's been to other nursing homes with disastrous results, so I was skeptical! I visited the home the next morning after she was admitted, and they seemed a bit understaffed. They were busy, but working on getting her set up. My mother had to use the restroom and was going to try to go herself, but she is a fall risk. They called to get help, and Theresa, who works in another wing, hurried to help out. I must say, I was impressed with her. She's a fireball! She helped my mother, and made sure she got everything she needed. A few days later, I met with the staff to go over my mothers care. Bertha was absolutely attentive and nurturing with my mother. The place has recently been taken over by another company. It needs some work on the paint, etc., but I will say that I am pleased with the staff and the attention my mother is getting. read more

Very poor management Down right deceitful Incident earlier in the month with Mom, took dress these people flipped out thought i was trying to take her no conversation just assumed im stealing a patient, See her lil Brother died and was getting her dressed for Zoom Funeral! My Mom was emotional we were crying snot coming out of nose ect! Pulled down just a moment to breathe! Director told her to leave she tried to explain its a zoom funeral and was taking patient! Director calls Cops and the end of life patient doesnt get to see Brothers Zoom Funeral! Just a momentary lapse in judgement! Also she is now denied access to only relative she has left. I work in facilities and attended a family meeting about finances and what will happen with Pat kept asking if this was resolved. It is not this Pat is just sitting not really able to motivate herself without love and support. This is a sad bad time for her to be alone! Please if you love your family member and you think they need family love support and compassion consider somewhere else! If you want to lock them away get med records reviewed after approx 60 days they did not realize they needed pacemaker data box ! This is Crucial Data they should of known they needed they were told she has pacemaker! If you want to drop a family member off and not be fully treated this is a one stop shop! This place needs to get shut down. My mom had spinal surgery and was in a good condition In a rehab at Santa Monica but we needed her closer to home. Brought her here and within the 6 days she developed a blood infection , infection on her wound , AND they dropped her in the shower. My mom is fighting for her life now at the hospital.
