The food was definitely amazing. Got a couple rolls, which were a little on the small side, but were delicious nonetheless. The tuna tataki was fantastic, seared to the perfect amount. I don't like tacky decor, I don't like all the college kids, I don't like crap food no matter how "funky" it is, I like the hot waitresses but not so much when they start flirting for tips. I don't know why I keep coming back to this place because 4/5 times that I've gone, the service was really crappy. I guess it's the closeness to UBC and the fact that it's open late. It took me this time around to want to write up a review, though. Because it was just THAT bad. The last time I went to the Eatery about a week ago, there were maybe 4 tables and 3 waitresses. I hate putting my hand up in a restaurant, however when waitresses pass your table several times and seem to fail to acknowledge your existence, I was forced to wave my hand around - which didn't even help, at all. I even tried to say "Excuse me!" several times - to no avail. It was almost as if they made an effort to ignore our table. All I wanted was some miso and some more water :( And what were the waitresses doing? I would honestly understand if the restaurant was busy or if there was only one waitress or something. But no. There were 3 waitresses. 4 tables. They were on their cell phones at the bar, standing around, and stopping by at a table near the kitchen/bar to eat appies or something. I honestly saw my waitress stop by that table and as she was standing, had a wing, took a gulp of some drink, and continued to "work". First of all, If you're going to eat, take a break and sit down... don't eat while you're working, it looks awful. When it came the time to pay, I had my card out and she came over and cleared the table and I asked if she had a machine to bring over. She said yes. I assumed she'd be back with it soon. I assumed wrong. She went back to that table to eat and drink some more, chatted and laughed away. "Lol they can wait to leave. I need moar wings" She must have thought. Lord. I don't think I've ever been so appalled at the lack of service and customer attentiveness. Seriously though, just... amazed. There is honestly NO excuse for this type of service when the restaurant is not busy and you have that many people working. Honestly the Eatery, the food is pretty decent but if there were any other place close to campus that was open late, I would never come back. It's got all the Andy Warhol you could ever shake a stick at; plus plus plus neon and glow-in-the-dark everything with black lights. It smells like food and sex and alcohol. It has everything George Louis Costanza would ever want in a sushi place. Every time I go to there I pretty much consume my weight in vegetarian sushi. I unhinge my jaw, salivate to get the digestive enzymes flowing, swallow it up whole, regurgitate thrice, and bask in the warming sun of So.Cal trying not to get hit by an eighteen-wheeler on I-5. Srsly get your sushi on. I almost lost my life partner, Rebecca, to a sushi-induced coma down on the streets across the way but by the grace of God Almighty (praise be unto Her) she lived to fight another day. Sushi abuse is a real problem, folks, and you never think it'll affect you until one day ... it does. Rebecca and I woke up thirty-eight hours later sucking up sushi off an Abbotsford potato farmer's oiled-up and glistening abdomen. Most definitely not your typical japanese sushi place. If you're looking for a more traditional sushi selection, this not for you. Bur if you're looking for a fun tasty and experimental place, the eatery will be just rigut up your alley! Service was very good, super friendly waitress who gave lots of recommendations and was also very thoughful in asking and catering her recommendations to my preferences. As it wss my first time, I settled on a sushi platter, "Room for 2". I think its a good selection if you want to try out different rolls and get a general sense of what the eatery has to offer. I personally liked the san fransico and the cucu's nest. I also had the salmon sashimi, which was cut a little too thick personally, but I really enjoyed it. Not only does it taste fresh, it melts very well in my mouth and is also bursting with flavor. They have a large selection on its menu from fun sushi to rice bowls to noodles to interesting desserts and alcohol concuctions. Will definitely come back to try other things! read more

I had come here previously with a few friends before, and while the ambiance wasn't my thing, I thought it was an interesting experience. However, that all changed last night when I went with a larger party. We booked a reservation days in advance, and when we get there we're told to wait 15 minutes. 30 minutes later we're told that half of us, the half that could leave early, was going to be let in. And just as a side note, when we first arrived there were no tables reserved for us. During this entire time, other customers were let into the restaurant, and the waitress's attitude was basically "well, as you can see, we're really busy", and "you can wait in our heated booth" (the booth was a) small b) full of other customers and c) could at no point fit our party). If they were unable to handle a larger party, they could have said so when we booked the reservation, or when we arrived, instead of wasting everyone's time. We ended up going to sushi tomokazu, which seated us within 10 minutes of arriving despite having only a half hour heads up. Their food wasn't nearly as overpriced and we ate until we were stuffed. Now that's a much better way to treat customers. read more

I had a horrible experience here a few days ago. After we had been seated by a decently friendly server we were given our menus. I noticed that the specials menu we were given said "Monday" at the top, even though it was Thursday. I looked around to see that the 2 other occupied tables (early lunch) also had the Monday menu, so I didn't think much of it. It's up to the restaurant which specials they want to serve - right? We ordered everything from the specials menu except a sunomono salad. The sunomono salad was pitiful - it cost around $4 and didn't include any shrimp or anything extra to make it yummy. It gets worse. As I was eating my very plain and mediocre salad I noticed something that must have previously been hiding under a piece of seaweed...I poked it with my chopstick and picked it up with the tip...it was a bug. One of those silver creepy crawlers. It started to move. I sat there horrified as it moved up the chopstick. I wanted to scream but instead I stared at the server, waiting for her to come over so I could tell her what happened. She wasn't interested in what was going on with the customers, she was hanging out in a booth chatting away with an older gentleman I assumed to be an owner or manager. My stare proved to be unsuccessful so I took my chopstick (and the bug!) over to show her. She didn't seem very surprised (RED FLAG), although she did apologize and offer me the choice to either order a new sunomono (REALLY!?) or have it taken off the bill (THAT'S YOUR OFFER!!?). I made a huge mistake at this point. I should have left right then and there, but I'm a typical Canadian and I'm too polite. So...I told her to take it off the bill and I sat back down. She never took the chopstick from me so I put it back in the bowl and waited for her to hurry over and whisk it away. HA, not quite the case. After a few more minutes watching the creepy crawler I couldn't take it anymore so I put the sunomono and chopstick on the empty table that was next to ours. We waited a few more minutes before she came to clear the dish - by this time the bug had dropped to the table. Of course she didn't notice so it stayed there watching us. At this point I REALLY should have left but, stupidly, I did not. We received our rolls, which were decent, and ate them up while the silver bug continued to stare. We found the rolls to be way too saucy and the tempura batter so hard that it scraped the roof of my mouth. Also, some of the avocado was brown. Pretty poor quality for such high prices! I wish this was the end of my story, but it doesn't stop here. Our bill came and, yes, the sunomono had been taken off...but none of the prices were from the specials menu, they were all at regular price. I brought this to the servers attention and she said "oops, I gave you the wrong menus, sorry about that." I had to go on to say that we ordered from the same menus she had given everyone else in the restaurant and that I would like to pay the prices that were from the specials menu we were given. She said she couldn't change the prices in the computer and seemed annoyed, so I asked her to talk to her manager to figure it out. She came back and said the best she could do was take 10% off the bill. I was so angry and annoyed that they weren't bending over BACKWARDS to do everything they could to keep us happy after finding a BUG in our FOOD. I just wanted to get out of there so I paid and quickly left. What a disguising and horrible experience! I will never return and will tell everyone I can to boycott this restaurant. It's very clear that customer service and satisfaction are not a priority to these people. Yuck. read more

i ordered the spicy tuna roll, which was very small for the price, and the jalapeno popper, which was mostly overcooked rice with a sliver of smoked salmon and nearly non-existent cream cheese. my husband ordered some tuna nigiri that he said was flavorless, as well as a chopped scallop roll and spider roll, also with an excessive amount of rice. the service is decent and the decor is awesome, but we will probably never order the sushi again. read more

There seems to be a consistent pattern with the waitresses being unavailable and/or completely ignoring the tables, despite the restaurant NOT being busy. I suggest that the hiring manager up their standards of who they hire & customer service in general. The lack of professionalism is laughable. My suggestion is that they provide further training for the employees, and weed out the bad apples. HORRIBLE service. Horrible is an understatement. The waitresses were passive aggressive and rude. My order took over an hour to show up, and the quality of the food was appalling and COLD. The water glasses were filthy, the tables weren't wiped down and were disgusting. A reservation was made for a table over the phone, but for some reason the table wasn't reserved at all. I don't know if the staff that I talked to on the phone had forgotten, or what. Irritating to say the least. We tried multiple times to flag down the waitress as she was not busy but seemed as though she was avoiding our table for some reason & using her time to flirt/socialize with the bartender. Awesome. We're starving and you're supposed to be working. The place was overall dingy & I would love to get the health inspector in for a surprise visit because judging from the cleanliness and temperature of the food, they would definitely fail - I have been a cook for 5 years so my standards are pretty high.They should be when it comes to food! Don't waste your time with this wannabe-novelty place. My friends and I were painfully disappointed. I was half-expecting to find a cockroach in my food. Seriously. I already know that The Eatery is not (nor pretends to be) a real top quality, actual Japanese restaurant. However they make average, edible, creative "sushi" and that's what you need to expect. Interesting to read the many similar comments on this and other sites about The Eatery - basically same comments as mine about the food, BUT also that the service is lacking. Our group pre-ordered a large amount of food for take out the next day. Great, no worries about lousy service. But when I phoned to say I was coming to get the food, I was told "Oh we're glad you called, we lost the little piece of paper the order was on" - WTF? How can you run a place like this? I called in the order at the beginning of their evening service the day before, and it didn;t sound loud and crazy yet in the background so there's no excuse. The girl said they'd rush our order and told me what time I could pick it up. The odd thing is, part of the order was chicken karaage, which seemed like it had been sitting around for a while based on the temp upon pickup. I left a very reduced tip, I was really cheesed off but I also realize not everyone who worked on my order was to blame. For eating in, I'd have to echo the sentiments of many, many others: the food is just okay, the service is even worse, and really if your menu is so large and multi-layered that it takes 30 minutes just to peruse, then maybe turn the lighting up a bit more so it can be actually read. We get it, your shtick is to be funky and kooky, but at least have some self pride and ensure your staff are attentive and busy. This is a classic example of a place that knows it will be busy due to young clientele and others who aren't concerned with the quality of their sushi - and has decided to just slide along and not attempt to constantly improve. read more

Went back to give it another try, and was let down again. Anyone who actually eats real sushi, and knows what good sushi is, would be appalled. The rice is rushed, the seafood is skimpy and low quality besides. I continually hear people talk about this place as a "hot spot" and how great it is. The service is slow, the food is sub par, the music is loud and obnoxious, and its way overpriced. The fact that people still recommend this place speaks to the sad state of the average persons food knowledge. The Eatery is one of my favorite places in Vancouver. It is a Vancouver must for me. The menu is HUGE. Tons of sushi rolls for every level of sushi eating. I myself am a sushi neophyte and tend to go for the fancy or vegetable rolls and there are so many to choose from and there hasn't been one that I haven't liked. My sushi loving friends go for the nigiri and "real" sushi and they say those are quite good as well. I came with a coworker who lives in Colorado and he said that he wouldn't be able to enjoy his local sushi place after eating here because of how fresh and tasty his sushi was. The service has been good every time I've gone, and it was particularly good this last time. Our server gave us complimentary beers for taking too long and frankly, we hadn't noticed a delay especially considering that it was pretty busy. Score another one for The Eatery! I don't know how it compares to other places in Vancouver, but I think the prices for rolls here are so good, especially compared to comparable places in Seattle where they're twice as much. Three of us ate a LOT of rolls and several drinks and I thought the price was totally reasonable. As many people have mentioned, it is pretty loud in here so if you're looking for meditative silence, not really the place. But if you want a fun, cool, and tasty place to eat...this is a great choice. read more

However more doesn't mean better. Walking in the eatery is cool its filled with artwork, sculptures, toys and lit by candles. The decor has a great mood to it. Too bad the food, and service is the issue. The menu is so huge I feel like the restaurant is unable to concentrate on making the dishes good. There is no quality control with such a huge menu. The cooks need to know how to make many things but not neccesarily make them well. The restaurant being so popular due to its decor has very very very slow service even during non rush hours. If you are hungry coming here might not be your best bet. The service here is non existant. Want water? Be prepared to wait 20 minutes. To be honest I feel this place is expensive. I never leave feeling full and my wallet feels unhappy. I've come here many times with friends and my experience is always mediocre at best. I've received curry that was tasteless. It had no flavour even though I asked for some spice. Once again no quality control. I'm not going to say don't come here. So eatery is part of a network I belong to. Myself and a group of friends decided to try it since we were craving sushi and it looked like it had a cool atmosphere. Walk in and it looks like it's all black lights with weird psychedelic stuff all over the place which is cool for about 5 minutes until I try to read the menu be the actual lights where we're sitting weren't bright enough. Ok so I ordered the Tuesday special which is a don (rice). It comes with a salad and miso soup so I think it can be pretty good. Wrong. The miso soup was pretty standard fare, not complaining about it. The salad was awful. It was mostly rolled up yam noodles. The sauce was very vinegary which if get is personal taste but really? Like u know yam noodles soak up flavour right? Anyways the rice comes along and I had the sukiyaki beef don. Beef was thinly sliced (commendable) but also overlooked. The sauce was a bit too salty for my tastes. Did i mention the service was terrible? We asked for the bill and the girl who we asked (not our server) said she would get our server for us. Thanks u couldn't just tell her to get the bill for us instead of asking her to come to us so we can tell her? This place is interesting. I like the ambience. Very different from usual sushi places. Interesting theme and decor. The only complaint I have about the design of the store is that the lighting was too dark so I couldn't see my food properly or take good pictures of it while I was eating. Service was okay, the waitresses were nice. The pricing was more expensive than the usual sushi places I go to (namely Sushi Garden/Sushi Town) but I'm willing to pay more for delicate and interesting fusion. I got the tuna stack and the green hornet. I LOVED the hornet, since I am partial to sushi with mango in it. There was a tasty sauce with it too. My friends and I shared our rolls and some of them said that the hornet was the best. The tuna stack was okay. They only gave me four chips to go with it so I had to eat a lot of the stack by itself. Went there for dinner and it was fairly packed. That being said, we waited over 45 minutes for our food and the people next to us who were seated later got their food first. I got the chicken tonkatsu curry and while the chicken was good, the curry itself was very thick and seemed like it had been sitting there for a while. Our server (Blair) was very helpful and even took off an appetizer because of how long we had to wait.
