Super fun with great food! First off, as everyone says, the ambiance in here is great. Theres crazy insane decor, dark lighting, and an awesome music playlist. That being said, I'm surprised that many of the reviews on here found the food to be bad. I was actually pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. The sushi pizza (crispy rice with spicy tuna) was perfectly crisp and super flavorful, and we loved the sashimi. We got the sushi roll topped with tempura banana, and it was delicious! I've never had anything like it, and the Baja complemented the eel surprisingly well! The sushi definitely didn't taste stale at all. This obviously isn't your typical traditional sushi joint, but I heavily reccomend it for a fun night with great food! read more

Great drink prices for the taste + presentation , love all the lychee selections. I tried two vegetarian rolls avocado crunch + the beet it roll. Both were tasty + really filling. They are decent sized rolls bigger than many places I've been for the same price. Also had Volcano + Bob Marley roll. You can also order any roll with soy paper instead of seaweed! This place is definitely going to pull you in if you are walking by because the vibe is just so fun. Its a bar which serves funky sushi and good cocktails. Their wait time is generally none, which make it super quick. The music and lights inside is a must go. I have not seen a sushi place like this one before. Their food is so so though! I use to come to The Eatery quiet often about 4-5 years ago. I recently went back after a long break and was a bit disappointed. Our reservation was for 7 adults but the staff insisted that we sit in a tiny booth, I told the staff that this might be a tight squeeze but she was insisting that it would be fine. The restaurant was quiet empty and there were other options for us. Eventually, I had to go back and tell her to move us because there was not a lot of room for us to even pick up our glasses of water. She then moved us to another table. The food had definitely lost its quality and our orders were also wrong. I understand that human errors happen but the staff were not apologetic about it at all. And why was sushi stuffed with sad bits of 2-3 mango pieces and stuffed with bits of lettuce to skimp out on tuna and salmon?! Arghh... Andy Warhol def lacked sushi artistry and I took a photo as it was double misery after the curry dish so I needed to share my disbelief and disappointment. FYI, I still offered 19% tips ... even tho they didn't offer to top up water once and I had to ask for water. To me, servers are not deserving of 20% when they keep rushing customers to pay just to "finish the table" especially when restaurant was more than half empty and it was only 6pm. Servers felt like they just wanted to be tipped and finishing the table service like Diner's Dash video game. IMO, servers don't even care if food was yummy... perhaps they knew sushi was not good so servers never asked once if the food was good and only focused on asking if we want to order more drinks or foods. I figured servers were not responsible for decreased food quality so I kept my mouth shut re Andy Warhol, got the bill, tipped the servers and wish I had made a better dining choice. Maybe that's their strategy to push lots of people to choose to dine on patio to look like a popular place when no one is sitting inside. Even their server admits it's hot inside without air conditioning. To me, this place is def not cool or even hipster quirky and def not deserving of the "one of a kind" sushi creation reputation anymore. Made reservations 2 weeks in advance for our anniversary, we got there and had to wait for a random table even though we were on time, requested a specific section, and not even half the restaurant was full. We each ordered a drink and it took almost 40 mins for them to come out. We ordered an app and roll with the drinks and had to wait almost another 20 mins after the drinks came out to get them. They gave us the wrong roll and when I mentioned it the waitress said "well I don't know why I would have written it down and typed it into the system wrong both times"... Like neither do I hence why I'm asking for the correct roll lol. We then ordered a pitcher of sangria and 30 mins later they came with a pitcher of beer. We told them no it was sangria, they came back 10 mins later apologizing but again with beer. Super frustrated at this point because they've gotten our order wrong 3 separate times. We only ordered one more sushi roll cause we were still hungry and the rolls themselves were delicious but the service was wildly awful. They also tried to charge us for the pitcher of beer that we didn't order and didn't drink so had to have them fix the bill as well. If you are tired of run-of-the-mill sushi joints, this eclectic and funky Japanese fusion restaurant in the Kitsilano neighbourhood might just be right up your alley! Decided to check this place out because of its unique decor, and we were pleasantly surprised to find that the food was pretty good. The menu had so many options, it was hard to decide. We ordered the "Love Boat" platter so that we could try a bunch of different items. We also got a chicken karaage appetizer and some drinks to round out our meal. The "Love Boat" consisted of: - Erotica Roll - Tuna Crunch - The Barbie - Mango Paradise - Yam Roll - marinated tuna sashimi - tuna, salmon, octopus, & mackerel nigiri sushi. Everything on this platter tasted great! I loved the variety of rolls, and I especially loved the marinated tuna sashimi as it had a really interesting flavour. The chicken karaage was served with creamy mayo-like topping & a soya-sake dipping sauce. It was a good appetizer to have, alongside all the sushi! The Asahi beer was straight from a bottle, so that's always good. I can't remember which cocktail I picked, but it was fruity and sweet, so I liked it very much! Decided to give The Eatery a try after 3 long years and stir back some of my old UBC memories back and this was a pretty disappointing experience. Focussing on the food, the sushi was extremely disappointing. I got the San Francisco and The Volcano. Both plates of sushi were bland, overwritten with extra sauce and just lacked flavour. Didn't help that the fish didn't taste fresh at all. Service was also extremely on the slow side. To be fair, it was a Monday night and pretty full and they seemed short staffed. However, in the bustleness our waitress got my order wrong. She was very apologetic about it and made sure the correct plate of sushi was given to me, but it gives you an idea of the lack of attention on the service end due to poor staffing. The only thing Eatery has going for them is the ambience. Its got this artistic funky vibe about it which is very pleasing on the eye. It's what attracted me here as a teenager at university and I guess it still holds true today given there is no other reason to come here anymore? Came here on a recommendation from a friend. It's definitely quirky, a little odd, and kind of dark inside. There's a large menu filled with various interesting rolls, and plenty of vegan options. We wound up getting a number of rolls and shared around the table. Some may have sounded weird, based on the ingredients and sauces (like a salmon donut?!). But they were all really good. Service was efficient, and the waitress noticed a mistake after the food came out of the kitchen, and we asked about it. She corrected it promptly - And let us keep the one that was made wrong, since it had been served to us. The only issue I had was that the amount of fish in the roll was maybe a little stingy. What can I say? We found this place on TikTok and so glad we did! By far, one of my favorite places on our trip that we ate at. This place had fun vibes abs crazy cool decor. The menu was just as fun as the environment. Our waitress was the cutest. So friendly and helpful with the menu. She should've been our tour guide while in Canada. Driving 15 mins from our AirBnB, we were happy we made the trek. Definitely worth it. Parking was a little hectic but what helped was the rain this particular day. No one was out. Win for us. I've been to The Eatery a handful of times throughout my undergrad and I think you'd have to drag me in to make me ever come again. The whole experience is pretty overwhelming for senses. Especially if you come at night and you're seated inside, it is super dark which can be a charming since the decor glows but it's not my thing. Between other customers and the music, it gets really loud to the point it's hard to hear and focus on someone right next to you. Not a great place to go for dinner if you want to have conversations. The service can be slow because it gets quite busy and it's hard to see inside. It has a lot of fun rolls and veggie options. However, the price is quite expensive, even compared to other sushi places around the area of higher quality and quantity. They're not authentic and some are good, but not memorable. I will say the last time I went, I got the chicken karaage and the portion was tiny. I was craving karaage then and it didn't satiate my craving. If you go to The Eatery, it's more for the experience and the fun rolls. In my opinion, the quality is not worth the price and you're better off going to various Japanese places around the vicinity. read more

If you are looking for a funky, trendy sushi place this is it. The interior has the coolest art hanging from the ceiling, black lights and EDM music playing in the background. The menu is extensive. Almost too many sushi roll options! But we managed to pick a few and they were all delicious. We ordered the pepper jack sesame chicken gyoza. They were very good. The filling was delicious and they were cooked perfectly. We also had the curry beef & veggies, which was a winner! If you like Japanese curry this is a must. How have I not reviewed The Eatery yet?? It's my favourite sushi place EVER! I've been coming here since 2004 and it hasn't changed a bit, which I love. Definitely not a traditional sushi place, but so many fun and unique items on the menu its ridiculous. They have tons of options for pretty much everyone, the menu is huge! My favourite item for sure is the Buddah Roll, which consists of tempura yams, red pepper, asparagus and dragon sauce. Amazing. I also love the Spicy Veggie Rolls, and the Curry Tofu and Veggies. Just thinking about it makes me want to go there right now! Overall the service is usually good, and the staff are friendly and accommodating. What else can I say? For example, I got the "erotica roll" for $8.95 and it was basically a California roll with salmon and mayo on top. You can get this roll for half the price elsewhere. - waited 50 minutes for the food - service is poor. No one checked up on us - ordered a happy hour cocktail and it was nothing special - group of 6 and there was 18% Grat on top... the server didn't even tell us until one of our friends mentioned it - they messed up on my bill and so I ended up e-transferring my friend instead. A lot of options for vegetarians/vegans! Has a super funky environment inside...like one of the most funky places I've ever walked in to in all the best ways. I used to live very close by and would get the veggie platter, which I found fairly priced and delicious. However I had a bad experience last time in which I ordered on the phone to substitute one roll that I'm sensitive to and they rudely told me I couldn't, even though several times before I had done just that. I explained it to them and they let me do it. However when I took the food home I noticed some of my order was missing. It just happened to be the Game of Thrones finale so I didn't bother going to get the food that wasn't in the bag, but still leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I haven't gone back since. This place is truly special. We were visiting from Seattle and were excited to try Vancouver sushi. We were on our way to another place but was struck but the energy of The Eatery. We ended up going in and having the best dining out experience we have ever had as a family. Our older son has autism and going out to dinner is something a stressful "here take my phone" experience. But at The Eatery everyone was so friendly and accommodating and we got the most perfect corner table and our kids just loved looking at all the amazing decor and the DJ and eating the delicious sushi. We ended up coming back the next night and when we requested to sit in the exact same seat and explained the circumstances with our son they were so happy to help. The sushi is really good every time I come here. However, when I came with my fiancé on the weekend the service we received was TERRIBLE. Every time we wanted something, we had to flag someone down because our actual waitress was nowhere to be seen. I think we saw her twice over the span of the 1.5 hours we spent here. We didn't even place our food order with her- we had to ask the girl who brought us our drinks to take our food order because our drinks had taken 20 minutes! My fiancé's food came very quickly which we were impressed by, until we had to wait another 15 minutes for mine. This is so unprofessional- no one wants to eat at a different time from the person they came with. It was very busy which clearly is a testimate to the good food. This place is the original psychedelic sushi joint in town. They now have a second location too (General Public on Main). Think of it as "hipster sushi meets cosmic bowling". The food is most definitely not authentic, so do not bring your Japanese visitor friends here unless they're open-minded. Parking is available on the side streets, as well as metered spots in front. As with the cosmic theme, the place is bathed with black light, with plenty of anime characters and random hipster art (Andy Warhol anyone?) on the walls and dangling from the ceiling. There's also a large covered (but not insulated) patio in front. Staff were friendly, though service was a bit slow. The place gets packed though, so it's not their fault. The sangria here tastes more like juice than wine, but it's not a bad thing. Reminds me of an alcoholic Shirley Temple. Special mention here (and a must have) is the tuna tempura. This alone makes the visit worthwhile. Fluffy on the outside, but tender and moist on the inside. The sashimi is decently fresh, and their "funky" sushi selection makes things interesting and very tasty. I've tried many rolls here over the years, and all of them have satisfied in terms of taste. The rolls are a bit on the small side, but that can be mitigated by either ordering more sushi, or hitting the McDonald's on the street afterwards. I've also chatted with the owner before (Japanese guy who obviously hangs with hipsters), and he's cool. He probably doesn't remember me though. You'll see him around town in the Nissan Figaro, with the Eatery logo plastered all over. This is a really fun fusion sushi place that I loveeee to bring my friends visiting from other places to! It has such a fun atmosphere and cool decor. I've never had bad service here, and the food has always been tasty and wonderful. I think it's a bit overpriced for what it is, but that's what trendy, hipster like places are like usually. If I want my standard sushi, I have plenty of cheap good quality places to choose from. Personally my favourite roll is the jalapeño popper roll! It was my friends favourite as well. I would skip the nigiri and regular sushi you can order elsewhere and just get the unique stuff. The drinks were really good as well! I've had their mojitos and the jailbait cocktail and it was really nice. The Eatery used to be a favourite spot of mine for the atmosphere, but I limited my visits because it was always very expensive. However now with the rise of all sushi prices, it's actually average price and above average sushi! I love how unique and innovative all the rolls are. And it's definitely an all around experience. My friend and I were craving some sushi so we decided to come here on a Thursday night to try out all their funky rolls! We were greeted & seated right away which is always a big W when you're hungry, and started looking through their menu. They have a LOT of fun rolls to choose from (all with equally fun names to go along with them) and I was really excited to see that their vegetarian selections were extensive as well. Between the two of us we split the MDMA, Berkley, and John Lennon rolls and found that it was the perfect amount, but the rolls are quite small so I would suggest splitting 4 rolls between two people. They also have a deep-fried Mars bar that's served with vanilla ice cream which is worth every bite! The restaurant's decor is exactly on brand with it's funky menu - sporting lots of glow-in-the-dark paint with eclectic art pieces hanging from the ceiling. The ambience of this place is nice and it was fully decked out for Halloween. The music is quite loud, but I like the vibe. The servers are super nice, and the food came out decently quickly. Make sure to ask what items are vegan, because the yakisoba normally has fish sauce in it. MDMA Roll (4.5/5) This was very good, but it is a shame that their sauces aren't vegan. I would have loved the mayo and teriyaki sauce that would've been on there. It was still very flavourful and tasty, but it was just missing that extra something. Gomae (4.5/5) This was better than I expected. Gomae is the item that I get every time I go to a japanese place, and it can be a hit or miss. The peanut sesame sauce they used was tasty and there was a good amount of sauce. It definitely doesn't taste very traditional though. Tofu Yakisoba (3.5/5) This was decent. There could have been slightly more mushrooms and tofu, but no major complaints. The noodles were quite chewy and a bit dry, but they weren't too bad. I like how it came on a pan. Vegetable Tempura (3.5/5) This was your average tempura. It was very oily as expected but at least the batter was crunchy. Gyoza (1.5/5) This was rather disappointing. Coming to eat here is really just about the atmosphere and cool decor. Food is tasty but, in my opinion, the rolls are covered in sauce that I wouldn't even call it sushi. I was trying to figure out how fresh the sushi was and it was just covered in sauce. That's why they say it's fusion! If you're a fan of regular sushi, i wouldn't recommend coming cause the prices are quite high compared to a neighboured sushi restaurant.
