Pickins is slim on this side of town for the youngish who aren't into sports bars and The Edison Experiment is trying to fill the craft cocktail, speak-easy gap. Maybe that's not the best description for The Edison Experiment.. don't go in there thinking it's going to be as dedicated to the speak-easy vibe as say, The Last Word. There was top 40 playing and a few TV's tuned to sports which isn't what I expected when I was greeted by the luxe bar and chandeliers. Anyway, identity crisis aside, The Edison Experiments drinks were on point. Best Singapore Sling I've had yet and their Absinthe cocktail was actually pretty enjoyable considering Absinthe tastes like poor kids candy. We visited on a Friday night and had a decent experience. Luckily it wasn't busy so we were able to sit at the bar and get good service. The bartender made some good specialty cocktails. If you're looking for an Old Fashioned, this is your place. I don't recommend this place for a group. The only employees I saw were a bartender and someone in the back unloading boxes. We arrived 2 hours after they opened and it was obvious nobody bothered to look at the restrooms. They were absolutely disgusting. Our feet stuck to the floor. I actually used to come here when it first opened and was known as Sinatra's. The difference now is the name. It's like walking into a 1920's style nouveau riche bar, which is actually pretty awesome. The wooden bar, dim lighting, mirrored backdrop where the bottles are and even the photos on the wall are all conducive to a great date night somewhere a bit out of the ordinary. Yes, the drinks are expensive even during happy hour but it's a mixology bar which means you're getting a hand crafted, well thought out and perfectly executed cocktail. The music is great, not too loud but just perfect enough to enjoy yourself without having to yell like a baffoon at the person two feet away from you. The only time it's been a little loud is when they have live music but even then it's usually a small jazz-type group and it's not overbearing. They also have spa water, water with cucumbers in it. It's delicious, seriously how many bars do you go to where you actually enjoy the water? (Anyone remember the move The Other Guys where Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell keep fan girling over the cucumber water?) Meat and cheese board is a must try even though its also a tad pricey. Found this place on accident after dinner at Cover 3 which happens to be in the same shopping center. Went here about around 10:30 pm Saturday night and it was pretty dead in there. We stayed until 1:30 and the crowd size didn't really change. All the couches were pretty much taken up so we decided to sit at the bar. The ambiance is sophisticated with a speakeasy vibe. To be expected with these type of bars, their specialty is in making classic cocktails with an updated twist. All of the bartenders are very friendly, but expect to wait a long time for your drink order. The cocktails do take a little time to make, but we were waiting 15 minutes for a bartender to take our order and another 10 minutes to wait for our drinks to be made. The price of the cocktails average about $10. Apparently Friday night is the best night to go, because there is a live band plays and it gets more packed. We will try this place out again on a Friday night, because Saturday night was quiet. Definitely check this place out if you're looking for a new cocktail bar in the 1604/Huebner area. read more

This is my new favorite place! I love the decor and atmosphere in this place. It's swanky, dimly lit, live music and good energy. I went pretty casual after running errands all day but you should dress up a little. The band was really great! The drinks were great as well! The bartenders take their time and make each cocktail with fresh ingredients. It takes a little while to get a drink because of this but it's totally worth it. I could not find any prices anywhere for drinks. The drinks I got were about $10 each but I'm not sure if those are regular prices. It would be nice if they had that listed somewhere. read more

I love low key joints with the feeling of a speak easy. Everyone characterizes places like that as old timey, or a blast from the past but I don't think that's it at all. There's something to be said about chivalry, and places like these have it. The care for the detail and panache. The bar tenders dress nicely and make excellent recommendations with correct intuition. The menu is a little fancy but the house drinks are svelte and well crafted. The mixed drinks and over all atmosphere are that of old Italy. Reasonably priced, for the drinks they have. Good selection on tap. Great spot for regulars! read more

As this city has been growing over the last couple of decades, seeing changes like the restoration of the Pearl, the expansion of the Riverwalk, we're seeing more and more bars trying to capture the niche of the very high-end experience. Some of them miss the mark and come off as more posh and uninviting, but The Edison Experiment is the cream of the crop in my opinion. Each experience here has been fantastic - the drinks are always fun, and the bartenders are always excited to introduce you to something new and creative. Some people may feel turned off by the higher price point compared to the standard sports bar, but in this case it is well worth it. read more

For some reason I thought I had already reviewed this joint, but as it turns out I was just writing my bitchy review in my head. With that start it won't surprise you that I'm not that big of a fan of "The Edison Experiment", so named for their Edison bulbs in the decor. I've been here a few times and never been blown away. There are several bars in San Antonio known for their craft cocktails and brilliant bartenders; this bar is not one of those. In fact, I would wager it's gone from decent to worse. Let me explain. The first visit to TEE was pretty good and the cocktails offered on the menu were pretty good. The second visit was worse with the menu cocktails being "uninspired" and wiped away as "just a bad choice". Third time, though, was not the charm because even my classic choices (Gin martini) came out not the best (boyfriend agreed). So, since liquor is expensive and I haven't the money to waste, I'll be going elsewhere. That being said though: I'd come back sometime in the future when I can ensure things are better. I love the ambiance and the quiet/chill location. But TEE has some work before it comes up to standard with 1919 and the Brooklynite. read more

I discovered this place on a Thursday evening. I came in, sat down at the bar and started talking with the bartender, she was super nice. There were not too many patrons (less than 10) and so service was relatively quick. The next day, I decided to bring a coworker. It was a different bartender. Still nice, but he seemed a bit overwhelmed by the number of people (approx 12 people total). I ordered an Indian Paintbrush and I immediately feared it would be too sweet, but it wasn't. The Edison Experiment is a pleasant surprise on the north central side of San Antonio and in a store front. Upon entering you get the feeling you're in a larger city or downtown. I came here with a girl friend on a Friday night around 9 and the crowd was extremely light- and only couples. But when the live jazz band came on at 10 the place became more lively. My friend and I practically had to yell to hear each other. I started with a lemon drop martini (not on the menu). It had an okay flavor and was not strong, so I ordered the seren-dip- a do on the menu. I was given another lemon drop, and mentioned that I ordered something new. The bartender made me the one I asked for at no extra charge and let me keep the incorrect one. Thumbs up for nice service. The Polar Essence had a floral, lemony flavor and was served in a high ball. If you like lavender and lemon you would like this drink. The bartenders are impressive to watch with lots of flames and other fancy techniques like smoking mesquite. It was really fun to watch! One star off because there is not a lot of seating for groups of 2, mostly group arrangements. I think sitting at the bar is your primary option. This is a quaint, swanky, 40s-style bar and with absolutely delicious cocktails! I had a classic Old-Fashioned and it was superb! Strong, not too sweet, and fresh orange peel..YUM! Bartender was super informative and very friendly! They have small bites to pair with your drinks such as a charcuterie board, which you can even get to-go! Happy hour was still going on when I arrived at 6:30p! Around 8pm, the bar turned from date night atmosphere to a nightlife bar, which is super smart business-wise! I came here on a Monday from 5-8 PM with a friend who lives in the area. The place was pretty empty, with only 7-8 patrons around at any given time. The bar is tucked in pretty well in a snazzy apartment complex - there's plenty of parking that's open to the public, and you'll walk by a really gorgeous and rather sizable water fountain. There's a patio-type space outside - I don't know if they serve drinks out there, but it's a good place to sit for a cigarette break. In any case, as I walked up, I could tell from the door that the bar was going to have a theme - the door was positioned in a half-circle, all wood, which gave me the impression of a hobbit den (if I'm being perfectly honest). Inside, the lights were bare bulbs hanging down from the ceiling, and the walls were covered with framed, old-fashioned pictures. Very cute. Happy Hour is every day from 5-9 PM, which really can't be argued with. I ordered 3 drinks entirely off of the Happy Hour list - each drink was $9 and easily the least expensive cocktails served. All three were creative, very well-made, and delicious to boot. The bartender, a blonde woman whose name I've forgotten, was a sweetheart. I don't believe the bar is wheelchair accessible, as there were a number of stairs to get to its landing. I'd visit again if I were in the area, but it's far enough from central San Antonio that I'd not likely do so otherwise. read more

So, I guess I've been trying a lot of different bars in the San Antonio area. This bar I chose to go to because of the happy hour which is up till 9 PM on most days. The cocktail during happy hour are six dollars, and there's about six different ones to choose from. I'd say for the price, these drinks are pretty amazing. Personally, I really like the old-fashioned type decorations and I think that the lightbulbs on the bar really gave it a cool ambience. Our party of three entered the Edison experiment at approximately 8 o'clock on a Wednesday evening. The bar was basically completely empty with only two other parties in the entire place. We sat down, and waited approximately 5 to 7 minutes for a menu since we had never been there before. We were never really greeted by any waiters or even the bartender really, so we moved to the bar to have a seat instead of the table we originally sat at. Still it's at the bartender approximately 10 minutes to get us a menu, and really we should've probably just left. Once we finally ordered drinks they came out at a reasonable pace and they were actually really good. I think that the bartender we were working with me I have just been having an off night as she seemed visibly frustrated. Granted this should not be an excuse for poor service as I don't think having a bad day and any other job gives anyone else a pass. Toward the end of the night another bartender was helping us and he was completely the opposite, he was very attentive quick and overall just a fun guy to be around. Overall, I would come back to this bar. Hopefully this bar will have better service because the drinks were good and the ambience was phenomenal. Get the White Russian-- delicious!! read more

They have one giant television and have sports playing. There is plenty of seating, it's nice and dark in there. I love the music they were playing, it was a mix of Black Keys and Passion Pit. Ok so the drinks! They were boozy and made quickly! The bartender who took out drink order was very knowledgable and friendly. I had the Bourbon Peach Smash and it was fantastic, I like to taste my bourbon so this drink is not for you if like super fruity drinks, it has just the right amount of sweet. My husband ordered a White Russian, and he said it was great, creamy but not too thick. I recommend this place for a date night or happy hour after work. read more

We asked to reserve a spot for a birthday party and when we showed up we didn't have our spot. They said people don't know how to read reserve signs. But the employees didn't do anything to accommodate our spot for our group. Also wait time for drinks is a looong wait. And it was a really slow night. The live music SOS was good tho. The drinks aren't strong at all. And the bartenders are inconsistent with the drinks. They also charge you way too much for a drink that takes 20 or so mins to wait / make. Won't be back read more
