We wandered in here looking for drinks and a midday snack. I loved the vibe- beautifully relaxed. We got the rice balls and pigs in a blanket. The food was very good. The rice balls came with a Parmesan cheese sauce. They were creamy on the inside and wonderfully crispy crunchy on the outside. The pigs in a blanket were well done as well. A hearty chunk of hot dog wrapped with a flaky puffed pastry. They came with sauerkraut and mustard- both of which were fabulous pairings. The service however was not great. Our server was friendly and helpful. But one of my pet peeves these days is servers not writing things down. Sure- cool party trick if you get everything right. But only about 10% of the time does that happen. We didn't get the fries we ordered and had to ask for water several times. They also disappeared for long periods of time, despite not being super busy. Despite this, we would give it another try as the food was worth it and I know servers are tired after a busy holiday season. read more

This was a great late lunch experience for a family. The mushroom pizza was the best dish our group ordered, in my opinion. Also got fish and chips--good!--a couple of impossible burgers that I didn't actually try but looked good, and the mac n cheese (kids thought it was incredible-- it was great but....$29? Hmm..). There were 4 slices of fresh jalapeño on the dish. The tuna was edible. The rest forgettable. The charred broccolini was terrific. However, I requested no breadcrumbs (GF) and, of course, they added the breadcrumbs. They were asked to remake the dish. This time it came out with cheese on it, not in the original description, I believe. Very loud, noisy with bad acoustics. Not the place to go to have a conversation. We stopped here for our last lunch in NYC and boy am I glad we stopped by! The place is beautiful, it had an impressive, well lit bar. And the food was delicious. The salt and vinegar fries are just what you'd expect. The French onion soup burger was juicy and had amazing umami flavor. My husband, young daughter, & I dined here after visiting the tree the day after Christmas. We were seated quickly in a cozy booth towards the back of the restaurant. It was beautifully decorated and had a HUGE bar (would be great for Happy Hour)! We each started with The Deconstruct cocktail- it was a bit too strong for me so my husband drank both & I ordered a classic Margarita- it was excellent (& I'm a snob about my margs)! For dinner, my husband ordered a chicken sandwich and enjoyed it. I ordered the Steak and it was very tasty- the peppercorn gravy and side salad were the best parts! Steak was a bit underdone, but not enough to send back. We also ordered the Shishito Peppers- they were okay. I've definitely had better-seasoned ones! My daughter had the kids sliders with cheese and enjoyed them. For dessert, I had the Ferraro Rock cocktail- DELISH! We also ordered the stuffed churros- YUM! Calamari was tender as heck and had you not said cornmeal I wouldn't have suspect a single iota. Each dish tasted superb, however my partner did note that online they advertise Detroit style pizza, but the actually pizza he received had a thinner crust than expected for a Detroit-style. The Elgin is a solid new-ish spot in midtown. I came with a large group and we sat upstairs. Vodka gimlet was great. I also tried a bunch of food, which the standouts being the fried cauliflower and cookie skillet for dessert. The Caesar salad and mahi mahi tacos were also decent. After about 5min of sitting at the bar unacknowledged, we were finally greeted with an exasperated "You guys know what you wanna drink?" This is a great find in a crowded neighborhood only steps away from Rockefeller Center. I heard they just started serving a Brunch menu so off we went to give it a try. I always liked West 48th. Lots of great little places to grab a slice or some Chinese food. There were already a pub or two on the street. But the Elgin is different. the food is good and the price is wonderful. It is not expensive for a good meal. The place was packed when we go their at 1pm. Stepping inside you can see it is a combination of old and new. A little history (it sits on what was the Elgin Botanical Gardens in 1801) sets the mood as you sit down to try a contemporary take on some American classics. Started with a Bloody Mary (it is Sunday after all) that was truly spicy. No celery in this tall glass. Instead a hot pepper and olives. It was seasoned well (even if I prefer a hearty tomato juice base). We had the French Onion Soup Burger (a chef recommendation). It comes with bistro fries which are crispy and perfect. They could have been a meal alone. As for the burger, it tasted as if I took a bite of a bowl of onion soup. Melted cheese and a burger that tasted like onion soup. All on a toasted roll. Onion soup in your hands! I loved this. Definitely a good choice. We also had the Pastrami Smoked Salmon which came on a toasted bagel with creme fraiche. We also made a special request (always ask) and the chef put on top perfect poached eggs. So, even though the menu did not have Eggs Benedict on the menu he did make a variation for us. Finished off with a tea and coffee (the coffee is never as strong as I like either. It is the way restaurants are.) Seeing the other meals go by I would definitely try the Mac & Cheese (with a fried egg on top), the Pizza (maybe as an appetizer when with a group), and the salads. All looked great. the food tasted fresh. The chef and the kitchen know how to cook. It is a great find in the area. Wonderful for Brunch but also great before the theatre (it sits near the district) or even a drink after the theatre. Compared to other similar restaurants in the area (between 38 to 48th Street and between 5th to 8th Avenue) The Elgin is the best. I need to go back soon and try the rest. I want to give a shout-out to Letitia our server who was wonderful. A true brand ambassador for The Elgin. Note: This place was packed all the time I was there. The cheese pizza from the children's menu is totally shareable but again, we were all hungry and there were zero leftovers. The service was okay. Main reason for the four stars. We were told the table was needed by 6pm, it was 4pm when we sat down. Not sure if we were being asked to be fast but it was uncalled for. It also took a few to order but once we did, the food didn't take long to arrive. Again, 5 stars for food but we could've had a better welcome. Came here last night for a late dinner. We were seated in their heated outdoor area almost exactly an hour after we put our names down (just as they promised). What's great about their outdoor seating is that they have heaters on both sides of the tables, which is very effective even on the coldest nights! To drink, we ordered a round of hot apple ciders; custom made with rum instead of whiskey. They were very potent in both warming us up and buzzing us up. To eat, we went with the classic cheese pizza and the Elgin burger. The pizza tasted as good as it looks in the picture! It's crispy and super cheesy. My friend enjoyed her burger as well. For dessert, we ordered some churros. They come sprinkled with what looked like crushed fruity pebbles on top and with some hot chocolate dipping sauce. They are definitely sweet though, so make sure you have others to share this with. The service was friendly and welcoming. Our waitress checked up on us regularly. I am so glad this bar is up and running during the pandemic. The outdoor seating and decor is beautiful and the heating lamps keep you very warm.
