I've only ever had the smaller kind of empanadas with thicker, bread-like outsides but these were thin and crispy. The man working told us it is because they use cornmeal instead of wheat, so they're gluten-free. I loved the light crispiness! They came with some kind of garlic aioli on the side--delicious! Each empanada is also stamped with a number that correlates to filling label on your receipt and I love that extra helpful detail. There is some seating both inside and outside.

But the arepa pabellon at Arrechissimo (this apparently means "awesome" in Venezuelan Spanish) wins the prize for us so far, and it's not even close. Even if it initially seems expensive at $13.50, it is a near-miraculous little food item, regardless of one's knowledge about arepas generally. It's perfect in its simplicity and greater than the sum of its parts: Wonderful white-corn flatbread style rolls with a great balance of fluffy and crisp, flavorful shredded beef, fried plantains, black beans, and melted mild cheese. Add the spicy cilantro salsa, which is just about perfect in its own right. By the way, despite its compact size, the arepa pabellon is plenty filling. Arrechissimo is just a food stand with maybe four outdoor tables. The setting in quiet Deer Park is pleasant and comfortable enough, when the weather is reasonably nice. Unfortunately for us, Arrechissimo is far enough away that carryout is not a suitable option during those too-many months when Cincinnati weather is not so nice. Owner Javier is about as welcoming and friendly a host as there is in the metro.

This is what we had for dinner and our thoughts: Mussels - The PEI mussels were so plump and cooked perfectly. We sopped up all the broth we could with the charred bread pieces. The gnocchi were pillowy and tasty with the sauce, but there was not much beef in the bolognese. Although these weren't the favorites of the night, they were still very good. Skirt Steak with Chimichurri - OMG! I don't usually order steak out, but serving skirt is rare and it is one of my favorite cuts. It was so tender with a fabulous grill flavor and the most delicious chimichurri. Except for about four bites my wife enjoyed, I ate the whole 10oz steak!! It is pricy, but I would gladly spend the money for this excellent preparation again. The potatoes were roasted and seasoned well, but I wish there were more than five pieces of asparagus for the price. Chocolate Caramel Tiramisu - Very light and chocolatey. Yum! We will be back over and over for the mussels and skirt steak.
