Really this place deserves zero stars! We went for a date night treat. We appreciated the handicapped parking at the front of the building but Im sure that it's the city we have to thank for that. As we walked in the door I observed two women behind the counter. One woman was mindlessly staring at a wooden box full of different cookies that was on the counter in front of her. I followed her gaze to the cookies and was mortified to find flies happily going from one cookie to another. I said to the woman " You see that's infested with flies, right?" She said nothing and turns away. I look to the other women who had her back to us working on some sort of drink. There were two people in front of us and they stepped aside to let us look at the case with the cakes and macaroons in it. I was happy to see the case was free of flies. I was disappointed in what I saw for their treats though. Maybe it's as good as it gets for Springfield but I don't see this business as an authentic European bakery. Please note that at this point we had stood there for 5 minutes without anyone acknowledging our existence. A simple "Hello" would go far here. Getting rid of flies and covering your cookies so they aren't a fly haven would also help. After standing there for so long without anyone caring to even glance our way, we left. ******************************************************** UPDATE: Thank you for the response. I am well aware of the origin of each of the pastry's. We make many of them at home. They are truly a labor of love. Keep in mind, my review is not taste based as no one offered any help. It truly doesn't matter how much of your heritage, time or passion goes into each piece if no one gets it from your case to the customer. I would have no way of knowing you use authentic French ingredients because I never got to taste anything. Thank you for reading about my experience and Please understand that it is because you took the time to not only read about my experience but also address my complaints that we choose to try for a better experience. Oh and a final thought or two about the cookies... perhaps with the cookies you could wrap them individually? We live in the far south so we understand hot summers. Perhaps some other shop owners from these hotter areas have posted ideas on how to minimize the problems that come with the heat. read more

EC's baking classes are top-notch. With some baking classes, a group works together on a project, and individuals don't get much hands-on time or experience. While the classes are expensive, for me it was worth the extra money to have my own work station and the more personalized instructional time. I have taken other classes in the area and they don't compare. Also, I have ordered a small custom cake from EC. It was beautiful and tasted amazing. Fantastic place to visit! Pastries are incredible and fresh brewed specialty coffees are great. Note: They don't do drip coffee so the closest you can come is an Americano but it tastes so much better! I wish they'd have a few more savory offerings - pastries are excellent but about the only non-sweet thing for breakfast is the quiche. Excellent but a little more variety please. Coffee is good, but even if you're not a fan there are tons of other drinks here that are good too! The lemonades are my personal favorites. The pastries are to die for, and each table has fun little games you can play with the people you're with. Let us start with how incredible her sweets are. My.. oh my. Strawberry tiramisu to make dreams come true. Almond and coconut vegan cookies, simply incredible. My only complaint would be that I asked for a hot water and she explained that they do not give hot water to guests. We had an unpleasant experience at European Cafe. Our espresso tasted burnt and our coffee tasted like water. The prices were very reasonable, which was nice. I am not positive that I would recommend this spot to a friend. read more

My usual go-to spot when visiting Springfield was closed so we gave this one a try. I have to laugh at reviews saying "it's SO expensive". It's no more expensive than any other coffee shop I've been to. The cakes and deserts range from $2-$6, and that seems pretty appropriate giving that there is obviously a lot of love and effort that goes into them. My husband isn't very knowledgable when it comes to anything other than iced coffee, so the barista did her best to explain everything and was very polite in doing so. You know, because me, the wife and coffee lover couldn't possibly know a thing haha My daughter got an Italian soda and hibiscus macaron. She loved both! My husband tried the cafe viena, and the chocolate cherry mousse. The mousse was spot on, and although small, very filling and rich. The viena was delicious. As for me, I tried the affogato. Although it seems like an easy dessert drink, it's easily ruined if the espresso isn't just right. I wasn't disappointed! So, so, good. Our visit totaled $20, and for 3 drinks, and 2 bakery items, that seems pretty fair to me. We will definitely be returning. read more

European Cafe is the quintessential coffee/pastry café. There are various desserts and pastries on display, a chalkboard menu and big windows to watch everything going on in the street outside. The same friendly French barista is always behind the counter. I wonder if she owns the place. Anyway, I highly recommend stopping by for a hot drink and a pastry. There are comfy couches in the back and plenty of seating elsewhere. She also has puzzles and other games you can play to pass the time as well as local artwork on display. read more

I stopped in here on a whim. The decor enticed me, then the desserts caught my eye. Surely, nothing could taste as beautiful as they looked. They tasted better. For me, anything with "mousse" in the name gets eaten first. Though the Tira Misu might edge that out. My party shared our choices amongst each other, and I would happily order anything I tried. After I ordered, I watched the staff at work - preparing drinks, serving pastries, interacting with customers - I realized they struck the perfect service balance. They provided quiet, competent service to those with other things on their minds, light banter with those so inclined, and expert patisseriel advise in the customers' search for pastry felicity. I could tell several of the people served came in regularly - a sure sign of their continuing approbation. I asked, in a spirit of impudent jocularity, whether the name of the cafe came from intent or ownership, and surprisingly, the answer was both. The sisters who own it hail from Europe. They must have a following from there - I think I spotted Frank Moses and Marvin Boggs. I tried to think of anything that could make this place better. The food is clearly top notch, as is the coffee. Decor? No. The lines and colors are clean. The artwork attractive and understated. Table cloths? No. Those just tangle up and get messy. Eggs and bacon? Well, eggs and bacon make any place better - even a cell phone store. But I can see how that might not work easily here, so I'll give them a pass on that. I went in this morning after a coworker had brought in a menu the day before. I had my heart set on a mozzarella tomato tart, but they didn't have them out yet. I am very glad they didn't, because I wouldn't have had the joy of eating the egg and bacon tart. It was delicious. The pastry was light, the egg cooked perfectly with the yolk still slightly runny. The goat cheese added just enough tartness to the crumbled bacon. I am in love. If it wasn't so bitterly cold, I would probably go back for another right now. read more

Absolutely phenomenal spot for pastries & more. After a friend's raves, we simply had to try European Cafe and it did not disappoint on any level. I tried the tiramisu and it was beautiful and delicious. My husband opted for a simple croissant and one jam cookie and he raved about both. We're far from experts but we both do a lot of cooking & baking and were thoroughly impressed with our choices. It is also a very comfy and stylish space to sit and relax. I loved the booths along one wall where people could actually mix together with those not in their party and it wasn't too awkward or invasive (rare). Prices are not "cheap" but one look at these delicate works of art and you understand...if not just by looking, then when you taste them, you understand. With that said, the prices aren't unusually high at all. I've paid roughly the same for plain & disappointing treats in a dozen other coffee shops across the country! It was an all around excellent experience and we cannot wait to return many times in the future and slowly work our way through every single item they have to offer. read more

Yay! A newish (I started this post a while ago and forgot about it) cafe downtown. Had two pastries and a chicken, ricotta, and mushroom tart; and each items was delicious. Their cheesecake is really good too. I highly recommend this place. On top of it, the girls/women who own the joint are super friendly and helpful. For the first time since moving to Springfield, I kind of felt like I was in Chicago again with this place (and yes, I consider that a good thing). I truly love that Springfield is getting more unique places like this in its food hangout options. read more
