(And I'm old) Hannah asked what I was looking for ahead of time and then talked with me about the cut as she was creating a work of art! She is very attentive to her work and skilled. The Experience Salon is, indeed, an experience. I first began my journey with them in 2008, when I won a certificate for a free cut and color during a hair show they hosted at Christ the King in Mount Vernon. A call and a few weeks later, I found myself in a cool black seat with Brenda over my shoulder. She ran her fingers through my mane and assessed the photo I brought as an example. My hair was too dark to achieve the lift and tone my tween fantasies hoped for in one session, but she'd go on to wrangle my hair into an appropriately edgy look regardless. The neck massage lavished on me during the hair wash was divine, and I sipped my complimentary espresso drink with glee. By my second visit I let Brenda take an idea and run with it, despite some reservations: thick, blunt-cut bangs. Toby even pitched in to get them even. They were phenomenal, and I noticed several acquaintances get the same look within weeks of the cut. It's now been almost 10 years, and I still see Brenda every 6-8 weeks. She has been with me through ombre, bangs, bobs, and more. Over a year ago I posed for a competitive photoshoot for her and trusted her to give me a chartreuse chop. Weeks later, Toby razored it down on stage after Brenda dyed it dark hues of blue and green in front of dozens of stylists at a Paul Mitchell event on Bainbridge Island. The whole experience was a hoot. While I was working with a local nonprofit that fights poverty in the community, I also recruited several Experience stylists to participate in an event that provided free hair cuts to people experiencing homelessness. That was in 2015 and they have been participating ever since. The whole Experience Salon crew is fantastic. It's been an absolute pleasure to see their business grow and thrive. Since that first fateful visit, I've now recruited my mom, stepmom, their friends, my friends and many others for their own "experience." If you're looking for a professional 'do on a budget, keep in mind that they often have "New Talent," or beginning-level stylists who offer less expensive services than their pros. But if you're willing and able to spend, I recommend Brenda--just be sure to plan ahead, she's booked weeks in advance! You can even make it a one-stop shop and get your waxing and makeup needs done, men's waxing included. Still not convinced? Toby, Brenda and the entire team at the Experience Salon are who you should be calling for current trends and technical superiority. I drive from downtown Seattle up to Mount Vernon just to have Toby do my hair and I have been going to him for the past 8 years...and I have no intention to go anywhere else. Toby takes great pride in having highly educated and trained professionals on his team. They look to each other for inspiration and trendsetting. Don't be fooled by the quaint town location. They are doing amazing work at the Experience Salon and would give any Seattle salon a run for their money! read more

Worst salon ever!! They melted my hair when they were giving it a smoothing treatment and about half of it fell out...no joke! Toby, the owner, says he's a "special" Paul Mitchell stylist but his skills don't match his talk. Other than a basic cut and color, he doesn't know what he's doing. After years of experimenting with different salons in the valley, I have finally found my salon! I found The Experience Salon after scrolling through my Instagram feed. After creeping on some before and after shots, it became obvious that there some master colorist and stylists at this Salon. I made an appointment with Ally and she was amazing! I explained to her that I am pretty low maintenance and on budget and Ally totally heard me. She would educate me the products she put in my hair, but was not pushy about sales or upselling me. I gave Ally a lot of creative freedom and she ran with it. I couldn't be happier. The Experience Salon is contemporary, modern, and a great value. I will be back for sure. read more

The salon itself is very nice. I was recommended here by a friend and had a very good first experience with Stephanie. I had made an appointment 8 weeks in advance for a cut and color, but 6 days before my appointment, I get a call saying that Stephanie was "off" that day...but I've had the appointment for 8 weeks. So I ask them to fit me in sometime on the previous day and I'm met with resistance. I told the receptionist that Stephanie needed to call me and work something out with me and I was reassured that I would get a call by the end of the day. That was Saturday. I didn't get a call until Wednesday. She left me a voice message in the AM saying that she had an opening for Thursday and to call. I work nights so I was sleeping when she called and when I woke up at 2pm and called to confirm the appointment, someone had already booked it. So she already knows that she has put me out and rather than tentively scheduling me for the appointment and giving me till the end of the day to confirm it, she just leaves it open and let's someone else claim it. I understand that it's a business and she needs to fill her appointments, but she's already screwed me out of one day so why isn't she going above and beyond to help me with another day? It's obvious that she doesn't care to keep her commitments that she herself stood there and made with me and doesn't feel the need to make things better with a potentially longtime client. She just lost a lot of business from me and I hope others can be aware of how she runs her business. read more

I LOVE this salon, one of the few in the area where I would trust any stylist to do my hair. Not only are these employees good at what they do, but they know more about hair care than I could imagine! Not to mention Angela, who does waxing there does a fantastic job with my eyebrows. I have trusted her for years and we'll never go to anyone else now. This staff is phenomenal! read more

The Experience is just that! A wonderful full service salon! Our whole family gets taken care of at the salon. I trust anyone there to take care of us from cuts to color! Unfortunately I had a not so great experience here. It was not terrible but let me explain. I got a cut and full foil. The lady that did my hair didn't use bleach she used a toner or something. Something new, I know nothing about hair but her pitch about it sounded good. Unfortunately it didn't penetrate my hair properly. There was a light color but nothing like it needed. That stylist wasn't going to be around the time I needed so another stylist did my hair and she was working under the owner that day. The owner said this was a learning experience for the stylist and that is why they keep their prices low. I was unaware that they had different levels of stylists and I thought the price I paid was very compatible to other salons. They ended up doing a partial foil which was unfortunate due to the fact I paid for a full. My stylists were both friendly and nice. Owner tried to cover up the mistake with having different levels of stylists. When making the appointment I was not told of the different levels or I would have been more cautious. read more
