The food here is a hard no unfortunately. The Steak Pie was barely warm, the beef was kinda dry and I was given very little gravy to help with that. The strip loin was ordered medium rare and showed up with a tough gray outer ring and a completely rare center. It's painfully obvious whoever cooked it had no idea what they were doing. The Scotch Egg was nice, though. Also our waitress was awesome. Overall, hang out here with friends and drink and you'll be fine. Just know that you might end up paying for food you can't even eat. read more

Went today for lunch after 20+ years of planning to get there. Won't hurry back. Busy place on this Easter Monday. They were out of the Steak and Mushroom Pie which looked like a good bet for an 'English Pub'. I joined my partner in Fish and Chips. Fish tasted like out of a Highliner box, chips were typical, greasy, some crisp some limp but overall tasty. Served with' Tartar' Sauce? Not tartar sauce. Mayo with some relish and garlic powder added. Coleslaw was cabbage in 4-6" shreds (could have cut it up) with bottled dressing and added garlic powder (sensing a theme here). Server was Sam who was pleasant and efficient. Won't hurry back. read more

I went to the fat duck last week for lunch with around 6 or 7 co workers. The menu is old English and some Indian, it's a bit odd, but that's just my opinion. I ordered the bison burger with fries. It was decent tasting however I had noticed a hair (not the same colour as mine) about half way through eating it. I had stopped eating it at that point. The fries were pretty good. We had moved some tables due to our large party, and I saw live ants all under where the tables had been sitting. I didn't say anything to the waitress or anyone because I have one coworker who is very particular and this would have disgusted her completely. Also I don't like complaining so I am just writing this review and won't be returning. The server was pleasant and helpful. By the end of it, I paid 25 dollars for a burger with a hair in it eating over ants. read more

Maybe it was because we showed up super late, but i was hoping for more. Place does look like an English pub with a decent bar that i was happy to see stocked plenty of hard cider which is incredibly popular in England. Menu was eclectic and all over the place, Indian, Mexican, English, American, but to be honest, i love the variety. Server was pleasant when we got her to the table, we ordered Fish and Chips, burger and burrito's. The fish was delicious, crisp batter, flaky whole loin of haddock, cooked just right, chips were a little on the thin side, coleslaw was excellent, the biggest disappointment was the mushy peas. I was thrilled to see them on the menu but they were incredibly dry and tasteless, again, maybe the late hour didn't help. The burger was "hideous" according to the guy that ordered it, the burrito's were also poorly received, dry and bland according to those diners. Prices were reasonable, service was ok and the outdoor patio looked like a nice spot to hang out on a warm summer night. read more

It's cold. I've been sitting studying for hours, and I can't feel my fingers anymore. My head is inhabited by a swarm of bees (well, cytokines, really, but they sounded like bees) and I don't feel like cooking dinner. His Goatness suggests we try The Fat Duck, and I'm all for it. The Fat Duck is billed as a gastro-pub, and visions of gourmet foods paired with local craft beers spring to mind. When we enter, the foyer is steamed from all the wet diners entering; the bar is warm, cozily lit with lots of gleaming woodwork and old-fashioned charm. We're seated rapidly in a tall wooden booth with a view of a crackling fireplace. Something about the old-world ambience of the place puts me in the mood for a whiskey sour... or maybe it's the cold weather. I had noticed Jameson's Irish whiskey on the way in, which I'm fairly partial to, so I ordered. There aren't too many local craft beers, but HG orders from the set available, and is satisfied. My whiskey sour arrives... and is pale green. *Green*. Whiskey sours are supposed to be golden amber, in my experience and understanding, so what the -- ? I taste it and all becomes clear: it's comprised mostly of Rose's lime cordial, with a splash of whiskey. Ewwww. I send it back, and ask for straight whiskey, on the rocks. Note to self: don't repeat this error. (I haven't ordered a whiskey sour anywhere else in Canada; I sure hope this isn't a Canadian thing. Terrible way to treat whiskey. Then again, I'm not fond of Canadian whiskey; maybe the idea is to disguise the taste?) Still feeling pub-ish, I order the meat pie. The crust is crisp and flaky, and the meat fairly savory, but a bit chewy. It's pub fare; it could be "upscaled" by the addition of wine and herbs, or by being made with a better grade of meat... apparently this is not the sort of gastro-pub I was envisioning. The acid reflux begins almost before I'm done eating. So: decent service, uninformed bar, limited choices of craft beers (it's been a while since I've been, so hopefully this has changed), and perhaps my choice of entree was not the best thing on the menu. It's a pub. Not a gastro-pub. Would I go again? Possibly so, given another reason besides the food. read more

I first discovered this gem just after they opened as I was working in the area. At the start I would go for lunch and it would be me and a couple of others at the bar but quickly word spread if the excellent food and soon the place got busy. Fast forward a few years and we dropped in to see Simon and have lunch this Saturday as we were passing by. As always, the food is beyond compare. Highly recommended. read more

I'll never be able to go back to ordinary fries again! The french fries here, served with a rich aioli, are the best I've ever had. The are the fries of my dreams: golden, lightly crisp, succulent, and deeply flavourful. The next day I was at an ordinary sort of place and served the standard fries from frozen: fibrous, flavourless, and not worth the calories. That standard has put me off fries, but these are the fries of fantasy. The server told us they are not only fresh cut but soaked in water to remove the starch, under the direction of chef Mark Thornber whom I recall served me fantastic mashed potatoes many years ago at The Sherlock. That guy has a way with potatoes! Now we order them with mussels to have a better version of moules et frites than I had a few weeks ago in Montreal at Bieres et Compagnie. The rest of the food was very good too. While my curry was just competent it came with an imaginative raita, decent naan and fluffy pilau rice. My sister's plowman's lunch was spectacular, featuring a truly artisanal collection of meats cheeses and pickles. The service was very friendly, helpful, and fast, as it has always been at the Duck. The food has not always lived up to its "gastro" promise -- I've visited here regularly with my family over the years when I visit from out of town, but these days with Thornber in the kitchen it's worth a special trip. read more

My wife and I have been patrons of The Fat Duck since it opened, they tell us (we didn't know it was new when we first visited). Simon and Rose are excellent hosts. The food is awesome, the servers are attentive, the atmosphere wonderful. We used to come Thursday evenings when Jamaican musician Lloyd Delpratt held court - sadly, the restaurant was remodeled this past winter after a devastating flood, and there is no longer room for Lloyd. My wife has Celiac disease, with a severe reaction to gluten, and she has always been safe eating at the Fat Duck. One memorable note... A couple of years ago we dropped in to the Fat Duck one evening, a couple of hours after my wife's brain-injured brother had passed away, At one point during our meal, Simon stopped by our table to greet us, and he was informed of the sad event. After our meal, he surprised us by inviting us to the bar where he served each of us a drink on the house, and then he sat with us for half an hour or so, commiserating with us. read more

A favourite place to go on Friday night after a long work week. While all your pub favourites are there on the menu, they are made with fresh ingredients and flavorful twists. Scotch eggs, chicken curry pie, beef vindaloo, braised ribs, and fish and chips (gotta love the Fat Chips) are tasty choices. One of my favourite places in Guelph. Fabulous, freshly prepared upscale and delicious gastropub fare. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Large selection of craft beers on tap. In the warmer months, they have a nice patio which is a great place to meet up with friends. read more

The service at the Fat Duck is very good. Their menu is an interesting english/indian pub fusion. The menu is slightly outdated and could use a refresh but you can tell that this is a place that has the same people coming on a weekly basis. I wasnt wowed by any of our food, I had the duck and my partner the burger, but I have no complaints. read more
