Think it used to be a wine or spirit bar before. Still has the large curved bar to order and pickup your orders. The wicker chairs look a bit weather and the cushions are quite filthy. We sat on the pleather leather couch for a bit while we waited for our drinks. Think it might be good to tack down the rug in the front entry as well as the main cafe area, the ends are curled up and could be a tripping hazard for someone. Ordered a 16 ounce PB&J latte iced with oat milk and a 13 ounce mango with tajin. Theresa recommended the PB&J as iced since the PB gets a bit funky as a hot drink. $16.96 The mango juice tastes quite syrupy to me, super sweet, not naturally mango sweet. The Tajin is fine. If you like a fun coffee drink, this is definitely a place to try! They appear to have many different seasonal specials. When I went, I tried their seasonal banana pudding latte. I ordered it less sweet and it was still pretty sweet so I would recommend ordering less sweet if you don't love your coffee drinks too sugary. This coffee shop is very active on Instagram (and does a great job on social media!) so you are able to see a lot of their seasonal specialty coffee drinks if you like to check them out in advance! I would say this is more of a "coffee drinks" coffee shop (different latte flavor options, seasonal specialty drinks, etc.) as opposed to more of a specialty coffee/artisanal coffee (more basic drinks, more focused on the coffee selection) type of shop. Unfortunately, I prefer dairy milk (they only carry non-dairy options, I believe oat or almond milk were the options). For that reason, I probably won't be returning. However, if you are okay with non-dairy milk alternatives and like a fun coffee drink, I would definitely recommend trying this spot as they definitely bring a lot of creativity to their menu and the staff is very kind! read more

First time visiting The Fern today. The service was great, staff was friendly. It's a cute place, with a projector playing shows but I will say it was hard to focus because the music was so loud. But the real disappointment was the drinks. We ordered a Michigan cherry iced matcha and a vanilla hot matcha. My boyfriend wanted a cappuccino and we were surprised to find out that a coffee shop can't make cappuccinos. The drinks we got were so overloaded with syrups and sweeteners that we weren't able to finish them. The cherry matcha was as like drinking straight cherry syrup. And it was $10. Never in my life have I tasted a "BANANA LEMONADE" that tasted THAT fresh. (I am slightly joking, I should have known that such a weird drink would have such a preposterous taste, but I gave it to a homeless man so I don't regret buying it.) Cashier gave my girlfriend a compliment on her hair which was very nice, and she got a matcha with some type of white syrup in it. I believe it was French vanilla. Very very tasty, reminds me of mackinaw. One thing I loved was the inside, which was like a mini movie theatre. It was playing this 90s high-school movie, couldn't remember the name but it doesn't matter since we got there when it ended. Plenty of plants and greenery. Guess I should've known by the name lol! With plenty of of open floor seating, a well appointed bar, a garage style door that opens to a patio for warmer days, and The Notebook being projected onto a retractable screen, I can see The Fern being a destination! Staff is always very kind, drinks are always very yummy! My current favorite is the Michigan cherry mocha - it's almost sour from the cherry! Many teas to try. Inside of the shop is comfy - lots of seating options as well as an outdoor patio. The Royal Oak-ians on Yelp seem very crotchety about some almond milk and sugar - this place is great for a treat! Loving this new comfy tea shop in Royal Oak! The first time I tried The Fern was during Arts Beats and Eats. They were a new vendor and their shop wasn't even opened yet. I had their electric lemonade which was so tasty! It's lemon tea paired with lemonade and blue punch and it was so refreshing and delicious so I couldn't wait to check out their shop! It was the perfect refreshing drink on the hot summer day. The tea shop is located in a cozy space across from Motor City Gas. The Fern has a menu with brightly colored iced teas with more than twenty flavors. All of the iced teas are made with organic green tea and I love that all of the teas are made with sugar-free flavors. It's so nice to find a refreshing, tasty, zero calorie, sugar-free treat! You can also customize and create your own iced tea by picking your tea and flavor that you would like to add for your drink. The Fern also has several flavors of hot organic tea. The last time I stopped in, I had the orange rooibos hot tea which was a rooibos tea with orange peel and root, and blackberry leaves. You can add your own sugar, honey, or agave to any of the teas. Teas are $6 for a regular and $8 for a large and the regular is a great size. I've stopped in a few times for iced tea after shopping Royal Oak's farmer's market in the summer and enjoyed my iced tea while reading a book and I recently stopped in for an event held by my girl's walking group where they showed one of all time my favorite movies, Clueless! What a fun, adorable event?! They encouraged everyone to get cozy, and to bring in blankets, pillows and air mattresses and projected the movie. The Fern has cozy hanging chairs, tables and booths. They had popcorn for purchase for $4. The aroma of fresh popped popcorn was delightful. They also had a fortune teller for the event who did tarot readings for around $30. The tarot card reader is also coming back in January for another event. I can't wait to come back in for another movie night event. The owner Theresa is so friendly and helpful. My fiancé and I found The Fern at Taco Fest downtown this summer and haven't been to another tea/coffee spot since. I have tried hot and cold lattes and tea and have loved everything I've ordered. Delicious hot tea but pretty expensive. Around $8 for my large. Weird. I tried a sample of their iced tea and they have a large variety of flavors, but everything is sweetened. They don't have an unsweetened options, so they are obviously mixes of some type that aren't in house blends because they can't "unsweeten" them. The Fern is hands down the best coffee shop in Royal Oak. Theresa is a great owner and barista who has crafted a diverse and delicious menu. The shop itself is setup phenomenally too. My favorite part about The Fern is that their coffee beans are fresh and small batch roasted. This means their won't be much if any oils in the coffee beans / grounds so your stomach won't be in shambles afterwards. Theresa the owner has carefully curated the tea and latte menu where she custom builds tea bags with the proper amount of tea, features tasty new items all the time, and is just a real down to earth business owner doing it all!
