Pros: Great service, quality food, live music some nights and extremely Groupon-able. Cons: Weird vibe and questionable math regarding the bill. Visited last night for dinner with the Hot Blond Wife and Daughter #1. The service was excellent, as were the Russian beers and the overall quality of the food. The lamb chops and brick-smashed game hen entrees were both very good, as was the salad, pierogies (SP?), Borscht and side dishes (mashed and roasted potatoes). The dessert was just OK. The bill was messed up, the music was on the bizarre side and the pace of the employees was leisurely to put it nicely, which was OK as we were not in a hurry. any restaurant whose menu cover page is an instructional: "how to drink vodka" (ice cold 2 oz., cheers, and drink in one drink. repeat in 15-10 minutes) wins some cool points and a few stars in my book. the food itself was pretty tasty, although i must admit that i am not an expert on "russian ukranian jewish" cuisine. i started off with the borscht (yum, i love beets!). my dining companions had the mushroom barley soup which is also excellent. i think the soup might have been my favorite part--they were both truly phenomenal. we then shared some meat dumplings. they were like a cross between a pierogi and a wonton. it was tasty in that fusiony way. and they were served with sour cream and soy sauce =) i was all worked up for a yummy main course. however i was disappointed with my selection. i hate when i get the sucky meal. i had the beef stroganoff that was made with too many sweet onions in the gravy so the gravy was too rich and very sweet from the onion overkill. the short ribs though were AMAZING! the meat and potato knishes- pretty good. and the rolled veal thing was too rich for me, but they all liked it. the food is very heavy and my tummy almost had a cardiac arrest, but it was good. if i ever go back i might just get a huge bowl of soup and some fusion wonton/pierogis. oh and p.s. in typical michigan fashion the portions were HUGE!!! a dinner could easily feed 2 people if not more. seriously. update: in retrospect i really think that the entrees are too rich and i couldn't even eat my leftovers (which is strange, i LOVE leftovers). so i had to bump down to 3***. but go for soup, seriously. read more

I have been coming here for many years as a loyal customer bringing in much business and enjoying their food and dance in the big room. I made a reservation about 1 week prior for my birthday, and called to confirm the day before. A big party. It was specified over the phone (my friend called with me by his side) that we were in the BIG room (as there are two sides to the restaurant, a big room with a dance floor and nice music, and a smaller side with no dance floor and with good but smaller and different music in the corner). We specified both times we called "the big room with the music and with the dance floor" so I could enjoy my birthday party. Dancing was very important to me. We mentioned that. I come often enough to know almost the entire serving staff and the owner by their first names. That is why this situation was so unfortunate. :( I showed up tonight, excited to celebrate my birthday with my big party of people ready to enjoy their night and spend their money... When we are Instead greeted, when we walked into the big room with the dancing, to find a wedding taking up the entire room... It was a private event. That I then found out they had known about for 2 weeks... That gave them plenty of time to tell me both times I called that I couldn't be getting the room and standards I wanted. Especially since it was the owner, himself, on the phone both times-- taking and adding to our reservation. I did not want to stay with my group of 16 people to eat at a place where we would not get to dance at all, even though we planned on it, and I felt really hurt for a place I have been coming for years and am on first-name basis with, to treat me so impersonally... But, I would have stayed. Until I asked what compensation we could receive for our inconvenience. We may have stayed if they had been apologetic (the server was, not the owner himself, who did not bother to come out to me and solve the problem... I guess he was too busy with the wedding he had known about for 2 weeks...) They offered to move the small room tables so we could "dance" in that room... by ourselves... with small music... without a dance floor... creeping around other people's tables... I said no. We may have stayed, still, if they had offered us some apology and compensation (a gift card for ruining my completely organized and planned birthday? A discount if we had stayed tonight?? I know the service industry, so I know that DEFINITELY they could have done something, ANYTHING to show me respect and to compensate. It was quite hurtful, actually, it made me so sad I couldn't comprehend why a business would treat patrons in such a way, especially since I had been coming there and bringing in new business for years((( While the food was usually in good shape, I am just so sad. I no longer think that this restaurant has people you would want to be dealing with. In the service industry, you really cannot be that way. It just poorly represents you and your whole company. Now I wonder about more than just this night... People who behave that way often make many more moves that treat their employees and customers poorly. Love this joint. There aren't very many like it in the area. I love Russian style delis, like Stage, and everything that a place like Stage deli is missing can be found at the fiddler. High quality fish, lamb, dumplings, soups, Russian spirits, pickled veggies, and more. This is place is like the Russian version of Polish Village cafe, in Hamtramck. Groupon steered me to this restaurant --& so glad it did! The 30min drive was well worth it. EXCELLENT wait staff service, food preparation, temperature, seasoning & presentation. Portions are large, fresh, hot bread basket & salad (amazing dressing!) accompany dinners. The beet soup was hot, filling and generous. The chicken kebab, pork kebab dinners were cooked perfectly. A round ravioli type dish (we chose chicken filling) was deliciously seasoned with butter & dill then is accompanied with sour cream as well as oil & vinegar-- you choose how to dip. Dan the owner walks about visiting diners; making it very clear there are MANY Russian patrons who are regulars. Just the fact nearly all the patrons were Russian was an assurance the food would be authentic and good. We will return without question. It was well worth the drive. Service was excellent, the food was delicious, everything was authentic and fresh, however it was expensive. I went there with my girlfriend with a Groupon, which helped me seriously save some cash. The ambience was great-helped with the romance thanks to the guy playing the keyboard and the acordion. We had a five course meal with bread, salad, borscht, choice of entree, and dessert. I had the lamb chops with rice and she had the flattened chicken with roasted potatoes. The pear soft drink was refreshing. My wife (who is from Ukraine) and found this place while in town on business. I've never eaten Russian food aside from a few dishes my wife has prepared but nothing too fancy. I found the food to be quite delicious and the atmosphere comfortable. I had the cabbage rolls which made my tastebuds rejoice. My wife had the salmon which she described as "pretty good." for dessert napaleon (sp?) a homemade cake of sorts. It also was delicious. It is only worth going to the Fiddler on a Friday or Saturday night, when there is good dancing music. Go with someone who speaks Russian, otherwise you might have a hard time getting in the "Russian" room with the music, and be stuck with the geriatrics in the main dining room. The food is ok, but quite overpriced for Russian food of this quality - better food is at Allegra, down Orchard Lake. The music, from disco to tango and traditional Russian music, makes the night. Had dinner last night. Borscht was spot on,bread and salad just ok..the salad dressing was overly sweet suggest ordering on the side. Lamb was quite good and 4 chops was a good value. Chicken was just ok lacking spice and a bit dry. The BIG disappointment was desert the neapolitan was inedible..my wife and I could only stomach 1 bite. Dried out and tastless. Sweet Sassy Molassy! My family and I just came back from our first meal at Fiddler and it certainly won't be the last. The service was quick and attentive, the atmosphere was very nice, and the food was fantastic. We used the groupon which included dinner for 4. There were only 3 of us so we expected the 4th meal to be a loss. Instead the waitress offered to box up our extra meal. The salad was heavy on cucumbers and tomatoes, which I normally don't enjoy but everything was so fresh and the dressing so good that I ate it all. This was my first experience with russian food. It seems like a mix of greek and polish with a few other influences. All 3 of our entries were fantastic as was the bread, soup, perigees and cake. Highly recommend. read more

The food here was delicious and the staff was very friendly! Also the ambiance was great, the had a live singer and a guy on keyboard, it really help set the environment up for a great feast. The lamb chops here were particularly fantastic!! I went here with my girlfriend. The food was phenomenal. Their salad had a dressing that I haven't had the pleasure of tasting before, and the bread was warm and soft. We split the pickle plate (pickled cabbage, mushrooms, cucumbers, and tomatoes), the Russian herring, and the meat and cheese blini, with an amazing apple sauce. I have been to Fiddler several times. First time, I was on project in Detroit and my colleague invited me to his 30th birthday party. It was 40 or 50 of us, we rented Fiddler just like a banquet hall and we really had the best time. Apparently, Fiddler offers customized family style package, and it is truly a unique experience. Our package was around $50 per person and it included what seemed like endless amounts of food (i can recall that we chose at least 5 appetizers - pirogues, crapes with caviar, meat platter, Russian style salads, and several entrees - we had lamb chops and shish kebab). Everything was really good, but the lamb chops were AMAZING! They had live band that night which made it even more fun. And the other time I was visiting a friend in Michigan and I told him that he must try those lamb chops. So we went to Fiddler and they happened to have live Jazz that night, what a pleasant surprise. Next time i am in Michigan we are definitely going back. read more

We were excited to read the menu but when the waiter came he told us the restaurant was closed due to technical problems. But there were people sitting and having dinner. :((( Hardly believe it. Our church group had a reservation, for around 12 people made several weeks in advance. A few days before we were to dine at The Fiddler, they called us to cancel our reservation, informing us that they had booked the whole place for a group, despite our already having a reservation! They made it clear that our smaller group was much less important to them. They also offered to have our group in the following week, to which we asked, "what happens if another group books the whole place, after us? Are we still getting booted?" Amazingly, they said YES, they would do exactly that! Unreal! This is NOT how to run a business!!! VERY unprofessional!!!! We will NEVER contact this place again!!! If they offered us a free dinner for our group, we would decline!!! This place doesn't deserve ANYONE'S business! I urge anyone reading this to go elsewhere!!! DO NOT patronize The Fiddler!!! Just ate at The Fiddler this weekend and it was amazing! It wasn't very busy but had a good atmosphere and live music. I had the lamb chops which were absolutely delicious and my girlfriend has the pelmeni and those were great as well. Amazing! Just had my rehearsal dinner at The Fiddler and I can't thank them enough. We had 40 people, of whom 10 were Russians and the rest were Americans. Lots of guests told me that it was the best rehearsal dinner they have ever attended. The food was delicious (I especially loved the meat pierogis and crab salad, but everything was very tasty), the service was exceptional and the live music brought lots of fun to the event.
