I like this place. The servers are friendly. It seems like a lot of regulars frequent here which I think is really important for community. It's not a fancy building but that's not a big deal. It feels cozy inside with the wood tables and well maybe not currently cozy with all the Halloween decor. It shows that the staff and owners enjoy and have fun with holiday decor and spirit! We came fairly early on a weekday because I was looking for a breakfast spot. I think we arrived around 9am. There was a decent amount of people already inside enjoying their meals. When you walk in the bar area is towards the right and the restaurant/table seating area is on the left. They had a good selection of options for breakfast. I was happily surprised! Boyfriend chose the Fireside Special. Which he proceeded to arrange into his own little breakfast sandwich creation. I had the Fireside Steak & Eggs. Sirloin was cooked rare and was a decent thick cut. Sunny side up eggs, hash browns and rye toast. I don't usually finish my hash browns but these ones were great! Not overly greasy and perfectly browned. Steak was cooked as ordered, and tasted really good. Eggs were great and so was the rye toast! I finished my entire plate and I don't normally eat much for breakfast. Our server was super nice and knew her regulars and their orders well. It was cute to watch. For years we looked at this place while driving down Robert and we finally went and have been back several times since then. It's a smaller place and a great neighborhood hangout. The dining room isn't big but managed to get people seated fairly quickly if there is a wait. The menu is pretty basic but good and they have terrific daily specials as well. Their Thursday Turkey dinner with all the fixings is very popular and I have had it at least a few times now and always been happy. We have been to Fireside a few times and have tried burgers, chicken, and the white cheddar Mac. Personally, their crispy chicken bacon melt is a bit better than Perkins' chicken tender melt because the chicken doesn't leave the sandwich and the sauce on the side really makes it cluck (...see what I did there?) It's always busy with older people who come to drink and socialize on the weekends, and the bar is always full during hockey games. We have never had a bad time. Angie was very kind and even asked our names, which made us feel like she cared. The food was excellent. I had the corned beef and cabbage dinner. And my husband had the Philly steak sandwich. I lived near the Fireside Lounge when I was growing up, until I was about 20 years old. It always seemed so adult and impenetrable to me! And even though my husband and I have talked about stopping in there for years, we just finally went there for the first time this past weekend. Well, let me tell you, Fireside Lounge has a very friendly, neighborhood bar feel. I was treated like I was a friend from the moment I walked in. Our bartender was super nice to us, and talked to us when she wasn't busy. Unfortunately, I wasn't very hungry, and we only had the onion rings. But they were amazing! The review would be better but for one thing. We always have dinner there and the food is generally decent bar fare. However, the last several times around 5:00 to 5:30. a meat raffle was taking place. The lady selling tickets came into the dining area and in a very loud voice solicited sales at every table. Two things that were annoying, 1. being regularly bothered by someone while we were trying to enjoy a meal and, 2. extremely loud lady performing the sales task and announcing a winner. All the saloons I have frequented held their meat raffles just prior to the dinner hour and did not molest customers having dinner after 5:00. We will try once more, but a meat raffle at 5:00 will be a non-starter and we will be gone permanently. read more

This is a review, specifically, of the Friday Night Fish Fry at the Fireside Lounge. They provide an all-you-can-eat plate of Cod with your choice of fries (waffle, french or cajun) and coleslaw. I'm a huge fan of the fish, delivered in small, hot, and flaky batches. They also have a homemade tartar sauce with a cajun flair. The cajun fries were good and the waffle fries were even better. The slaw is tangy is flavorful. The restaurant is small and gets cramped easily. A downstairs dining area takes a lot of the overflow, but its not as pleasant as sitting upstairs. My recommendation? Go early or late to avoid the rush. We stopped in around 8pm and service was fast and friendly. We're looking forward to coming back and trying out their regular menu. read more

Have had a few good meals here. Today I went with friends to celebrate special occasion and we were disappointed. Two of us ordered medium rare ribeye. Got well done. Sent back and got medium. My friend send his back again but I was too hungry to wait. I think that because there ribeye is only 1/4" thick it is easy to over cook. Pretty expensive mistake on our part. read more

I was thinking how I need to review some not so great places I've been to and thought, "How am I going to come up with such a bad place?' Well, light bulb, this is it. My in-laws decided on this place, unfortunately, a while back now so of course, like anything I gave it a try. Usually I try to only review places if I've been to them more than once but this place is the exception. The food was terrible, your typical american bland meal, I think they had a special which included corn, mashed potatoes and roast beef. No flavor at all and terrible quality, I don't even want to think about where that stuff came from. Luckily I didn't eat much of it. Ok so the food was terrible but the service may have been worse. Our waitress could have cared less about her job and it really showed. She pretty much just dumped our plates off without saying a word and then left to go talk on her cell phone by the bar. My wife and I go out for breakfast a lot. I love breakfast, and even though it's not her favorite meal, she indulges me quite often. Previous posts have profiled some of my favorite places for breakfast like the Swede Hollow Cafe, Capital View Cafe, and the Saint Paul Bagelry. Another place we hit from time to time is The Fireside Lounge on Robert Street in West. St. Paul. On weekend mornings, we are often headed down Robert to do our grocery shopping, and the Fireside is a nice quick stop. Often you will find me there the morning after a especially long night, because the Fireside has one key offering other breakfast spots don't: alcohol. If I'm in need of a Bloody Mary, I know I can go to the Fireside for a quick, cheap breakfast and a little hair of the dog. The menu is pretty basic, you're not going to find over-produced, fancy-dancy breakfast options here. You're going to get some buttery, stick- to- your- ribs options. Omelets, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, steak and eggs, eggs Benedict; you know -the kind of stuff your gut craves after a long night of drinking. I have two mainstays at The Fireside Lounge. The Cajun Breakfast (hash browns, mushrooms, onions, peppers, cheese and Cajun sausage topped with two eggs and smothered in hollandaise), or the Italian Omelet (Italian sausage, peppers, onions, mushrooms, and pepper jack cheese). I usually ask for the omelet smothered in hollandaise as well, because as you know I'm a total fat kid. Sara almost always gets the Eggs Benedict with sausage instead of Canadian bacon. I guess you can tell we really like the hollandaise at The Fireside Lounge. he Fireside Lounge also offers lunch and dinner, with specials everyday. I've been in once or twice for lunch and the steak sandwich is pretty tasty. Overall, The Fireside Lounge is a blue-collar neighborhood bar and restaurant that offers good food at fair prices. Oh, Karl. Didn't anyone tell you never to order the "special"? I am new to town, and my fiancee and I were beginning to doubt West Saint Paul had ANYTHING at all to offer the sad little corner of the world it can be. Then, one day, we got hungry. Our stomachs led us to Fireside Lounge. The outward appearance leaves much to be desired. It is a small dive that's modest parking lot is always curiously packed. We walked in to a good mix of tunes to include Kenny Rogers's "Just Dropped In (to See What Condition My Condition Was in)." The bar is openly connected to the dining area, which is smaller than most fast food lounges. It has a VERY strong, old hometown feel, down to the wood panel walls and clientele. But we like it. The people working there seem to not hate life as much as those working for a chain and actually seemed pretty relaxed considering they were at work. I guess the three huge flat panel TVs don't hurt. And you could see a TV in vivid detail no matter where you sit, unless you opt to dine outside. The soup of the day was navy bean and ham. We never heard of such a soup before. It was piping hot when it hit the table and a very tasty start. The turkey patty melt my fiancee ordered was stacked with about an inch of meat and included rarely used red and green peppers with the onions. He said they didn't skimp on those, either. I ordered the buffalo chicken wrap. Sometimes with wraps you get the crazy flavored herb wraps that just don't go with its main filling. This wrap was pleasing to look at and taste with plump diced tomatoes, a heaping portion of cheese and shredded lettuce, and a very generous portion of the spicy buffalo chicken. It was not overly greasy and the chicken lasted through to the very bottom of the wrap, which is another rarity. I usually have a ton of wrap left with no meat to finish it with. Not the case here! I was pleased about that. It had about a 3 in diameter, too. Huge. Yeah, the wait staff was a little less attentive than most of us desire. But, I just compare it to this old adage: closed mouths don't get fed. I didn't feel uncomfortable with the idea of asking for anything. Any table in that place was within a couple paces of the farthest waitress. And they were very approachable. If you want a luxurious, expensive, formal meal with origami napkins atop your shiny plate once you sit down, Fireside Lounge is definitely not for you. But if you want to feel at home and have a good meal at a decent price with a fistful of free candy on your way out, check this place out. After receiving a free drink token, my fiancee and I decided to check this place out for lunch. We've been considering it for months, but the drink token was the perfect reminder to get is there. The waitress denied my fiancee alcohol because she doesn't understand how to read a Wisconsin license... Okay, whatever. The food was mediocre and there isn't anything on the menu that stands out, so we went with burgers. The place was empty with exception to a few people at the bar. The waitress was very rude and off-putting. We went to the liquor store afterwards where my fiancee's license passed just like any other place. Well I don't know what some people are looking for at the Fireside, but I know from my experience that the staff is nice... more than welcoming. The decor/atmosphere is classic neighborhood hangout... and the food is home themed and good. My mother is a fish fry connoisseur, she knows what she likes and is not afraid to tell everybody if it is good... or bad. The Fireside has her seal of approval for Friday Night Fish Fry. Nice large cod loins fried to perfection. I have tried their burgers and their Turkey Night Special... Homemade goodness. If your looking for a nice quiet night in an upscale restaurant... skip the Fireside. If your looking for a nice night out with a friendly staff (bartenders are very nice) and a bunch of locals, with a few drinks... and a good meal.
