    Ship wreck
    Emily S.

Tried Mallards for Sunday brunch. Wasn't very busy when I arrived and was seated right away. They have a bar area with TVs so you can watch the football game and brunch at the same time. They have happy hour all day on Sundays with appetizer and drink specials. Despite a slower restaurant, the food took a while to come out. I started with the crab cake appetizer which was fine but not something I would get again. It was very thin and the mango salsa was an odd combo. For an entree I had the chicken club with fries. The club was stacked with chicken on top of a tasty sourdough. I liked the garlic aioli they spread on the bread. My friend ordered the ship wreck off the brunch menu. This dish comes stacked all together with gravy poured over the top. I tried a bite and the hash browns were very chewy and slightly disappointing. The gravy covers everything so you better like sausage grav I'd order something else if I were to order a brunch menu item in the future.

    BARRAMUNDI RODRIGO with coconut risotto

No lightning bolt of excitement here--more of a gentle flicker, like a cozy candle at a restaurant that really wants to be romantic but also really loves wood paneling. The meal was good, just not quite the "prepare-to-be-wowed" experience I'd hoped for after reading the reviews. Service was friendly and quick, and the place itself feels pleasantly comfortable--somewhere between "rustic charm" and "Dad's favorite nice restaurant." I ordered the Barramundi Rodrigo, which was cooked nicely, but the coconut risotto underneath had a bit of a char that didn't quite vibe. Then came the redemption arc: the key lime pie. Tart, smooth, and so good it made me briefly reconsider everything I'd said up to that point. That pie knows what it's doing. All in all, a solid dinner. I wouldn't object to coming back--but I might also wander off in search of something with a little more sparkle next time.

We came here for dinner, and got the shrimp boil for 2. This was delicious, and next time I come I'll get this again. The shrimp was plentiful. I wish there had been a bit more potatoes and corn...but this was an otherwise fun spread on a tray. My dining partner doesn't like spicy seasoning, so I asked for the dry rub mix on the side and I was able to sprinkle it on my portion.

Overall a great meal. We ordered the walleye bites, slider and lobster bisque soup combo, the Big Griddy, and mac & cheese with fruit. Also got the cajun fries and margarita. Big Griddy had generous portions. Lobster bisque delicious and canme out hot. Mac & cheese made in house. I love it when it's not from a box and a restaurant puts in a bit of effort for mac & cheese. Only complaint was that the sliders were a bit underwhelming size wise and pretty basic. I get they're sliders...they were a wee bit smaller and nothing special than what I hoped for so prob not ordering those again. Previously, I've had the lobster soup bowl which came piping hot in a crusty bread bowl and Tennessee Hot chicken sandwich. Thise were both magnificent and got me to come back again. I also love the fries there. They're really awesome. Def get these3 items. Soooo tasty!

    HOT APPLE PIE

This is one of my favorite seafood spots in the twin cities. I love to come here in the summer to get a pound of crab legs. There's a parking lot and indoor/outdoor seating. It's got cute decorations through out the restaurant. I always get the crab cakes, the Caesar salad is good and again, I love the grab leg deal they have during the summer. The apple pie was okay, the ratio of pie to ice cream was off and there wasn't a whole lot of apple in the pie imho. It was mainly ice cream with a hint of apple pie. Overall, the service is always great and I enjoy eating at Mallards.

Stumbled on this place seeking salmon on a mid Sunday afternoon for my daughter dinner date. The atmosphere was lovely externally and then upon arriving in, I was greeted by a lady who was setting silverware and she asked the host to assist with seating. When seating me he wiped off the table for me. I was never given silverware but I figured my waitress would be attentive and notice. I was impressed with the wiping the table before seating me. I asked for a booster seat (sat at a booth). For parents, the distance between the booster seat and the table is a bit wider than most places so be careful if have a child under 2 that is still very energetic. I switched to a high chair to prevent potential accidents. Usually not a problem but that goes to show the nice distance from the table to the seating. The bathrooms are nice with lower sinks and very clean and smelled great. I am pointing out the positives because much of the rest of the review will not be as pleasant. This was a Sunday mid day and the restaurant was not busy at all with customers like that. Most busy was at the bar. There were staff members that were cleaning floors, cleaning tables, preparing cutlery, walking in and outside to tend to matters, etc. we had Ashley who started off pretty well so I was optimistic until I inquired a price about a item a piece of salmon by itself, she created the price in her head and when asked her to confirm that is when the agitation arose. Placed my order at 15:01 and she returned to the table at 15:31 saying she would go check on my food because it had been about 30 minutes. At some point a bit before the 30 minutes, the host inquired how our dinner was and I had told him we had not eaten yet and that is when I started noticing the time. I know I could have and should have got up to leave BUT I got side tracked for time nursing my daughter (at the table) and it was dinner time for her and she needed to be fed her solid meal and I did not want to go to another place and wait all over again and truthfully I had not kept track of time occupied with trying to keep her calm and as I said nursing her. I noticed when asked how my dinner was. But when Ashley returned to the table to say she would go check on my she confirmed that the order was submitted at 15:01 hours. When the food came at 15:41 (another 10 minutes after Ashley left the table at 15:31 to go check the food) everything looked good. It was hot, for a matter of seconds as most food is but before I touched the food, I asked for management. Management came over apparently aware of the issue already because she was swift at talking and not listening and offered 15% off my bill. She gave some reason that the shift had a switch and the cooking staff had not communicated who was to start my orders so I was caught in the middle of that confusion. She then walked off because to her it was resolved and then returned and offered me a dessert on the house. Ashley returned all casually like oh sorry again that took so long and when I asked her about the menu so I could choose my dessert she gave me two options of desserts when there menu online shown more than two options. She then returned with the bill and then suddenly she was great at table watching. I was cleaning my daughter up and getting her dressed for us to leave. I was paying cash. She came by and asked me how I was paying and I politely told her cash and I would leave it on the table. She walked away and I left my cash with a small tip. I was floored at the poor experience and even more floored at how that excuse of having to wait 40 minutes for food and to only be compensated with 15% off and a free dessert that I did not care for at all and to not be provided a menu to choose my dessert but given limited options. The reviews were what drew me to the place but my experience was one worthy of noting because it was so unpleasant. I have never left a small tip for someone but that was the smallest I ever left because I did not like her service.

I always forget about Mallards because it's tucked away off the beaten path in a strip mall in IGH. Visited for an early dinner around 4:00pm for fish and chips specifically. Walked in and were greeted and seated right away. Wasn't too busy, but as time went on, you could tell dinner folks were starting to arrive. It took our waitress a few minutes to greet us, but I noticed she was serving a set of tables on the patio as well. She took our beverage order and asked if we wanted any appetizer which we decided not to indulge this time, so we could enjoy our entrees of fish and chips. We ordered the walleye fish & chips, but noticed as my nephew was already eating it that we actually had been served the cod fish & chips. Once our waitress came over to check on us, I let her know we had received the wrong meals, she let me know, she accidentally mixed it up and put in two cod fish & chips. She offered to have walleye fish & chips made for us, but I declined as we were already eating and secondly, didn't need to bring an abundance of fish home for leftovers. Had she been around sooner to check in on us, I likely would have asked for walleye. It was a good meal nonetheless. I was surprised she didn't automatically provided us with a discount as curtfousey for her mistake. Restaurant was clean and overall it was a good experience. The chicken sandwich and a few desserts caught my eye, so I'll need to keep those in mind for next time.

    HH Sangria

Nice and clean and looking forward to some delish seafood! Met a gf for dinner at this clean comfortable restaurant. Got there in time to enjoy a red sangria and the elote corn fritters from the happy hour menu. The sangria was a nice size and super tasty. The corn elites come two to an order. They were fresh and covered in a delish mix of corn, cream, lime and spices. For dinner we ordered the shrimp and grits with grilled shrimp (instead of blackened) and the fish tacos. The shrimp and grits came with 8 nice size shrimp and creamy cheesy grits with onions, peppers, cilantro and an amazing tomato/bacon jam. The fish tacos were loaded with large chunks of walleye, pico, shredded cabbage and sauces. Very pleased with all of the food and drink! Def recommend!

PEANUT BUTTER JALAPEÑO SMASH Cajun Fries
    Jessica B.

I tried the PEANUT BUTTER JALAPEÑO SMASH BURGER. It's under the handhelds and was a juicy patty, American cheese, triple berry aioli, peanut butter, and candied jalapeños. I upgraded to the Cajun French fries that were served with a remoulade dipping sauce. They were crispy and I loved the sauce. This was a perfect early dinner for me prior to heading off to the airport.

Absurdly priced, small portions. The risotto was so bad it was laughable. Salmon was dinky yet cost 27 bucks!

The Mac and cheese was delicious, and the potatoes had a great flavor. Be warned that the initial line is super long and can stretch to outside, but then it is much quicker after you get through the first line. The servers were all super nice and the place had a great, welcoming atmosphere. I also appreciated that they let girl scouts sell cookies inside the restaurant! Will definitely have to come back for their other menu items.

I would literally shut down for a weekend and higher better servers or just train everyone so much more... It took a straight hour I mean a full hour to get a fried chicken sandwich and a burger with some cheese curds-that is crazy guys. Our server just seemed really uncomfortable and out of sorts. It felt super awkward. The old place was so much better!! I understand wanting a bigger location and I was excited because I'm in Hastings a lot and yes, you did need more space but we literally compromised service for space and that's not sustainable in a restaurant. I really hope this gets fixed because this place was a gem! My husband and I loved it. We would go all the time and get burgers and fried chicken sandwiches for like the last three years. I was excited over being in a bigger location, but yeah, the service was so awful and the food took so incredibly long that it just put a huge cloud over the whole experience. Also my loaded fries--the cheese wasn't even melted. Like, how could you even send that over to the table? I hope you guys do a lot more training and get people up to speed. There's no way I could come back after what I just experienced maybe in a few more months when people are more trained that was super frustrating. I also feel sorry for all the veterans and good old boys that used to go there every day. The old place had a way better vibe to it. This feels chaotic like people are confused. You have a whole bunch of staff that don't know what they're doing now and it's super noticeable. Fried chicken was delicious as always, but boy did I pay for it. Honestly, the wait time was just the worst part. That's my main complaint a full and I mean I'm not exaggerating here--an entire hour for one burger and one fried chicken sandwich that's insane and they didn't even offer to take anything off when it was all over. $90 for this experience and it was really frustrating. It was sad to us too because this used to be one of our favorite spots. Super bummed.
