Got some food to go! They also have dine in if you're looking to stop by. You can order and get the food to go right outside, but card only, no cash. Clam chowder is the star!!! If you want to get something, I would suggest to get the clam chowder, super creamy AF & flavorful. Tried two oysters. $3.50 each. Large oysters! They were okay. We got the fish n chips. I would not recommend. Very bland. Panko fried. It comes with ketchup & tartar sauce. I wasn't a fan of the tartar sauce. I wish it came with a lemon to squeeze on top for more flavor. read more

The Fish Hopper is my favorite restaurant in Monterey by far! Everything on the menu tastes great, has beautiful presentation, and the views are unbeatable! Their restaurant is elevated and hangs over the ocean at the beach where you can see the entire Monterey Bay. At one section, there is glass on 3 sides to get a fabulous view of the bay, the beach, water, otters, kayakers, and sailboats. The prices are reasonable and the staff & service are excellent! A great place to go for a special occasion or just to impress the one you're with! read more

It's definitely recommend it, it has a beautiful view of the ocean, the service was pretty fast (we came for lunch on a Wednesday, there was NO wait). ALL of the food looked delicious. I will say, it was a bit on the pricey side, but I think it's well worth it especially for the view. My daughter had so much fun counting how many seal she could see. The host that sat us down was very nice and engaging, it made the whole experience very friendly. Ms. Shaniya was very attentive, and made it a great funexperience, definitely looking forward to coming back again. read more

Came for lunch on weekend. Seems busy weekend, during woman's US Open. Didn't wait for table, all service was quick and helpful, quick to bring water. Ambiance was decent. Open air, on the patio, not that windy. No music, just ocean sounds. Food came out relatively quick. Had a variety of dishes in our group, but will comment on the seafood platter for 2, see picture: all good quality, rice was awesome, all seafood cooked really well. Really decent sized portions. One in our group had a shrimp pasta dish and that one was spicy and creamy in a very nicely mixed way, great flavor control by the chef. Overall a good lunch, nice place, would come back. read more

Came to host some friends and try the locals menu. Couldn't book a party of 7 online so I called and was helped quickly to reserve a 745pm table. Our friends were running late, so we were directed to the bar upon arrival where we got familiar with the regular menu, locals menu, specials and bar menu until our full party arrived. We opted for a fried calamari appetizer which had light and crispy rings with two sauces. It came out quickly and was good. Our friends arrived finally at 830pm and we quickly ordered: fish n chips, scampi, skirt steak, and sanddabs all from the Locals menu (comes with soup or salad and cheesecake dessert). Several items were in the $22-$28 range for 3 courses which is very reasonable. Everyone liked their meals and had leftovers . I tried the Caesar salad and clam chowder and both were very good. My Cioppino was very good although a little spicier than expected. I tried the fish n chips and I thought it was great. We ordered a bottle of white wine as well which was a little sweet for our taste but still went well with our seafood. Our serve Manny, hostesses and bartender were all friendly and took care of us. We had a beautiful view also before it got too dark. I'm really glad we tried this popular spot after years in Monterey. We now have another spot to got to regularly and bring by friends looking for good food with a view. The locals menu is a reason itself to return. Thanks for making an affordable option for us locals (proof of local residency required so I showed my drivers license to the hostess before she gave us menus). (I parked at the meters which were free after 8pm and walked a couple blocks) read more

Zabdiel was amazing! Incredibly friendly, kind enough to share with us what his favorite entrees were, and made us feel very welcome and at home. We enjoyed the special of coconut shrimp and sesame encrusted salmon they had on the menu for Car Week, clam chowder, calamari, and Ahi Poke Nachos that we couldn't even get a picture of, they looked so delicious we had to dig in. (All freshly made and worth the wait) There was a female shift leader who checked on us while we were enjoying our meals - she was very sweet and helped with seating guests while we were there. We told her everything was delicious, but our mouths were too full to tell her how amazing our wait staff was. We ordered so much we had to box it up, but it made for a great lunch the next day. Zabdiel, Felipe and a nice tall young man with curly hair who was helping to bus tables were all very quick and friendly, helped many guests and helped us before we even needed to ask! Very attentive team who were all looking out for one another. This was a busy time (when is it not) for Fish Hopper and Zabdiel played it cool as if we were the only ones in the restaurant - he never made us feel rushed or obligated to order something. I have been coming to this restaurant every time we visit from the Bay Area. I wish I can do a review on the food but unfortunately the 2 girls working at the door refuse to give me a table by the window because I was only having an appetizer and cocktails so because of that I was only allow to sit at the bar area. Which I didn't so I left. I would've totally understand if the place was busy but the bar area was completely empty and it was plenty of empty tables inside. I actually saw a to sit table and I pointed to it and they say no. If I didn't have good experiences the times before I visit I would have given one star but I'm not hurting the restaurant because I know how the negative ratings affect a business as I also own a business. All I wanted was a view to work on my laptop and wait for my kids while they were at the aquarium. You never refuse business when is slow. History

Established in 1995.

During the famous Cannery Row "Steinbeck Era", fish hoppers played an important role on the Monterey Peninsula. The fish hoppers, large square wooden boxes, were anchored off the shores of Cannery Row to receive the fish caught by Monterey's premier fishing fleet. Fishing boat captains guided their overburdened vessels to empty their catches into the fish hoppers floating in the Monterey Bay outside of each cannery. The fish were scooped into the fish hoppers which were connected to the weight scales by a large pipe. After being pumped into the cannery, the fish were weighed and then sent to the processing plants. Today the Fish Hopper Restaurant features prime rib, steak, fresh locally-caught seafood, pasta and a children's menu, with a view of fascinating marine life and beautiful waves crashing over the rocks.

I'm so glad we did it that way because I found the cherry and lime drink too bitter and sour. I know that it's supposed to be sour, but it was just too much. Didn't love it as much as I hoped it would have. The pink lemonade was so good! I love the throwback to a childhood drink (with some alcohol of course). So good. Protip: give it a chance and definitely come here for a drink!

They even allowed my dog to sit inside with me, although we were limited to the counters at the front of the lounge. And if you're a little tipsy, you might buy that bottle even if you really didn't want to. But then you'll taste the bottle later and curse Mitch for being right about the damn bottle. Anyway, always a mystery visit when I'm in town.

Sitting outside allowed us to still enjoy the music but also hold a conversation. This place seems very popular and I'd certainly come back. The vibes were exactly what I'm looking for as a 30 year old that enjoys an occasional night out. I did not snap a photo of the menu but they sell beer, wine and cocktails. There was a cool retro looking photo booth and caught my attention and I was upper bummed when I realized it was $7... unfortunately, I couldn't bring myself to spend $7 for two photos.

The 'keep it open' policy is something I appreciate but would also appreciate an itemized receipt when you close out. Here's why to keep your eye out when drinking at this establishment. 1- when you close out, it's helpful to verify what you consumed to ensure you're corrected charged. My receipt was the merchant copy and the customer copy. Itemized? Really had to ask for it. 2- the merchant copy - it asked for a tip and the total amount. When we closed out our beer and well drink, it was ~$28. Weird, right? So my thought was that they clearly charged something incorrect. 3- when there's something automatically charged, it had better be communicated to me upfront. The gratuity was automatically added and IT WAS 20%! No sign, no way to notify me that it was already added. It didn't even say so on the merchant or customer copy. On top of that, the copy asked for AN ADDITIONAL TIP. For something like that, I had better get great service. 4- The service here is spotty at best. There's usually one bartender for the often busy bar. Not a problem, usually. But with that high of a price, better serve your customers well and have a fully stocked bar. 5 - the options were lacking. Two things you'd think would be stocked but weren't - espresso (come on, even Kahlua) and apple liqueur for an espresso martini and appletini were too much to ask for, I guess. Overall, a disappointment. Good thing they have the vibes nearly right. But awful business practices.

The American breakfast was hearty and filling. The bacon was perfectly chewy, salty and cooked. The Yukon potatoes were crispy and had a good level of spice. The eggs were super fluffy as well. The sourdough was warm and the butter was creamy. Our server was extremely kind and was ON IT when it came to refills and making good conversation, super kind and made sure to check on us consistently.

I got the Jalapeno Margarita while my boyfriend had the Tito's Mule. My drink was very sweet with a kick of jalapeno while his was pretty good. They had music playing. It seems that there is a modern jukebox where you can pay to pick a song. There was one pool table for people to play. So many people came up to pet Meatball and give him so much attention. He absolutely loved it! There was one guy who asked if he can say "Hi" to Meatball, and we said that it was okay like we normally do. This weirdo was basically making out with Meatball; not cool at all man. Then Meatball flipped on his back, and he was holding Meatball. My boyfriend told him to let go of Meatball. It was such an uncomfortable interaction. Not normal at all. He even said, "This is my NYE kiss!" SMDH. The guy sat down at a table that is across from us, and he kept looking at us. The Meyer lemon sauce went well with the salmon. 12oz Pork chop: The meat was soft and easy to bite into. The cauliflower puree was delicious! Snake River American Wagyu: I thought the steak was okay. It was a bit too rare for me personally but my husband liked it! Brussels sprouts: Yummmm! Love the crispy Brussels sprouts. Overall service was great and the food was good. The only downside of the night was not getting the duck liver mousse toast. Not sure why the order went through when we mentioned in the beginning but hope to try it next time we're in town.

For $42, the portion was quite small--just five thin, uneven pieces--and the lamb was overcooked and overly salty. When we gently mentioned this to our server, she responded with an eye roll, which was disappointing. We genuinely dislike leaving negative feedback, especially for small independent restaurants, but the overall experience left us quite disappointed. Hoping they can improve these items, as the restaurant has potential.

I See You! Excellent Customer Service Still Exists Chef Mohammed, Cindy, Julie & Holden at The Fish Hopper Seafood & Steaks, Monterey, CA' I have read several reports about why' good customer service is hard to find nowadays. According to these reports, there are many reasons why it's lacking and may feel worse than before the pandemic, i.e., many companies are struggling to retain employees and provide the tools and training, or they may lack resources, or face unmet expectations, etc. Though this may be true in some places, in my travels, I have encountered many hard-working people who are customer-centric and do their best to exceed the customer's expectations. Now, I'd like to say that every encounter is good, but it is not. Nonetheless, I focus on those who go the extra mile to make a positive impact. Thus, I share my service experiences with the world in the hope of making a difference in the reader's life and recognizing service professionals who may not get or feel seen. Who am I? I am not a celebrity, a journalist, a reporter, or even a social media influencer; I am simply an ordinary person with a passion for people and inspiring them by using my voice and ability to shine a light on the superstars in the workplace. Before retiring, the foundation of my 27-year career in education was founded on taking care of students, their families, our employees, and the community; I loved every minute of it. While in Monterey, CA, for my birthday on September 4, 2023, my family and I were looking for a good place to eat. We saw The Fish Hopper Seafood & Steaks Restaurant near the water. The view was beautiful, but we knew nothing about the food. We saw a young woman (Julie) sitting on a nearby bench. She wore a uniform that looked like she worked in a restaurant. So, we asked her if she knew anything about the food at The Fish Hopper, "It's really good. The clam chowder is delicious, and we give samples too," she said. Julie was so warm and friendly. Even though it appeared she was on a break, she represented her place of employment with kindness and professionalism and was happy to answer our questions. Because of Julie's advice, we decided to check out The Fish Hopper Seafood & Steaks. While the hostess gathered information to seat us, I checked out the display of plated dishes that showcased some of the restaurant's signature dishes. OMG! I was drooling over the display. I didn't need to sample the clam chowder because I was ready to order. The hostess or busser led us to our table (I can't remember), and one after the other, I saw the waiters and waitresses serving deliciously plated food. After we were seated, Holden, our busser, contributed to a pleasant experience by setting us up with water and making us comfortable. Again, I saw incredible dish after dish carried on trays to tables. The food looked so good! I felt like a kid in a candy store. I couldn't make up my mind what I wanted to order. When our waitress came to tell us about the menu, I looked at her badge and said, "Hi Cindy, today is my birthday, and all I want is to meet the person who is pushing out all of this incredible food." The smile on her face told the story; she said, "That would be Mohammed, the Executive Chef." She told us she has known and worked with him for numerous years. She talked about what a terrific person he is. Then she said he would love to come out if he wasn't too busy. The restaurant was incredibly busy as it was the Labor Day weekend. "But, let me see what I can make happen," she said. Cindy left, and about 5 minutes later, she returned and said he would try to come out. Because the restaurant was busy, I didn't expect him to appear. A few minutes later, I heard a voice behind me say, "I heard someone is having a birthday." I turned around and saw this charismatic man dressed in a pristine chef's coat behind me. Now, if you saw the movie BAPS and remember Mickey's, played by Natalie Desselle, reaction when she saw Howard Hewitt for the time, she was excited, overjoyed, and simply thrilled and could hardly contain herself. Well, that was me when I saw that; as busy as he was, Chef Mohammed found the time to step away from the kitchen to come and wish me a happy birthday! My mouth flew open, but unlike Mickey, I was speechless. I couldn't say anything for a minute and then pulled it together. Chef and I embraced, and he wished me a happy birthday! He stayed and chatted for a minute. I had the chance to talk about the fantastic food. I told him I am in culinary school, and we talked about our passion for cooking and other opportunities. Our experience at the Fish Hopper sets the bar for a 5 star review. The food was incredible and so was the service!!! I grew up on the east coast, so I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to seafood. We Marylanders are pretty picky about our crab. In our minds nothing can compare to the Blue Crabs we pull from the Chesapeake Bay. So when a local friend kept telling me that we needed to go to The Fish Hopper for an awesome seafood dinner, I kind of had that, "Yeah, yeah, whatever..." attitude. Then when she said it was on Cannery Row I was even less impressed with the idea. Tourist trap is what came to mind. But she was persistent and kept raving about it, so when we had some friends visiting Monterey and staying in a hotel near Cannery Row, we decided to give it a try. It sits out at the end of a water so the views are spectacular. Plus we got a table on the Patio. It was warm and a gorgeous night out! How can you beat that? We didn't make reservations, so if you show up at the prime dinner hours expect to wait. But with views like that, who cares? Wander around the shopping area a bit, take in the breathtaking scenery of one of the most beautiful places in the world while you wait! Our waitress, Laura really knew her stuff and knew how to keep our party in a good mood, while also giving us plenty of space. Heck she even spoke French?!? She was taking an order in French by the table sitting next to us, I was impressed. The bus boys consistently filled up our drinks while the managers also checked on us a couple of times making sure we were happy! Service was so welcoming The tables are rather close together, but otherwise everything about our dinner that night was fabulous! The warm baskets of fresh sourdough kept us happy while we decided what to order. My husband got the Cioppino, which he loved. I got the lobster tail with a filet mignon. It's got to be one of the best dishes I've ever had! Our friends ordered their fresh fishes. Highlights: *Sourdough bread to start - warm, soft, and chewy, just how it should be from Boudin *Crab Cakes - Three cakes of solid dungeness! No filler in these guys. Crispy on the outside, warm and moist on the inside! *Fresh Fish - We each ordered a different fish and they were all OH SO FRESH! served with a generous serving of pasta and vegetables...Simply delicious. I guess theres a reason why this place has been around for so long. They're food is without a doubt excellent! Expect to be set back $25-$30 a dish, but its well worth the high quality and great service. Lunch would be a more economical alternative. If you're in the Monterey area and are in the mood for an upscale seafood dining experience, definitely consider the Fish Hopper. The Fish Hopper provides a romantic waterfront setting, along with a lovely selection of pasta and seafood dishes that create a fitting menu for all. The complimentary calamari & artichoke appetizer, as well as other appetizer choices, along with the wine selection, further makes this restaurant a great place for a romantic dinner with a date or a family dinner with a large group also. I absolutely love everything about this restaurant! My family from out of town and I headed here for dinner on Saturday. Thank you Fish Hopper of accommodating a party of 18 on a Saturday! My family hardly gets to eat fresh seafood because they live out of state and away from the coast. They ordered a little bit of everything and loved it all! From oysters to lobster, to drinks and dessert! Everything was outstanding!!!! All the 18 dishes were fabulously solid in their own exclusive way - crab crusted salmon was creamy in a white-based sauce with large chunks of fresh crab meat spread evenly throughout. The dungeness crab was fresh, tender and came with some butter for dipping pleasure. And the calamari was crispy and fried to perfection. We paired all of the above with some exotic drinks and it matched perfectly. Lastly, the staff was genuine, welcoming and awesome! Tania, our server was a true professional. Tania was hard working, knowledgeable, friendly. I was very lucky to have her as a server, plus she spoke Spanish making it so comfortable for my family to order. Don't read the bad reviews. They're all haters. This place is awesome. People seem to always have something to.niych about these days and they pick apart everything. The Fish Hopper is a great restaurant. Their clam chowder is out of this world. Their bread is great. Their fish and steaks are great. They have tasty desserts and really cool alcoholic beverages. Yes, they don't allow screaming children or kids under a certain age. And if you are trying to bring your loud obnoxious child into a nice restaurant, you should shoot yourself. You're not only suffering yourself, but you're making everybody else in the restaurant suffer by having to hear your child make noises that were once adorable, but now haunt your dreams. Guess what? They piss everyone else off too. If you want to take your kids out to dinner with you, go to a Chucky Cheese. If you want to come to the Fish Hopper or any other restaurant not for children, get a sitter (there's an app for that too and you can find great trustworthy sitters in any town you're visiting just like that). The ages of bringing kids to restaurants where adults are trying to enjoy their dinners into to have you ruin it because you bright your screaming little angels is over. This family was the first one with a pair to actually come out snd say, "no kids". Everybody will either complain about it or love it. That's the problem. And that's why these guys don't have a whole ton of great reviews because of people bitching and complaining about stupid crap like this. If you aren't adult and if you have children or have had children or want to have children, you will go through either hating this place or loving it. But you will do both at different times in your life. I actually have been eyeing on this place for a while now every time I walk past it. But given that they are serving casual-yet-high-quality seafood, the price was kind of discouraging to just casually stop by alone on a random weekday. But just the other day, after I got off my yoga class at 8pm, my husband picked me up in Monterey and we thought we should break our terrible routine of resorting to Subway sandwiches every week after my classes and try something new. Plus it was our wedding anniversary. It was a chillier evening compared to the last few nights and the timing and the temperature seemed to be right for some good, cozy seafood. So I mentioned this place to my husband and we decided to check it out. We sat at the bar at first and had some of their exotic drinks. Bucket of Fire. Amazing drink let me tell you. The bartender Adam (I believe his name was) lit our drink on fire. Simply great! It's like a giant Mai Tai. We were then seated on the patio by the beautiful Monterey Bay view. ... and because we are addicted to Dungeness crab, we just had to try it here to compare. So we got a Dungeness crab cocktail to share, plus a green salad and a cup of chowder. The clam chowder at this place is incredible. And let me tell you... I am HOOKED. It kind of tastes like... heaven. I know it sounds weird, but to have that rich creaminess of white clam chowder with a bit of tobasco mixed in? You catch my drift. This chowder if definitely something I'll have cravings for. On to dinner.....our meals were awesome, especially the Alaskan macadamia halibut that our server recommended ....like butter! Service was excellent too. Laura (our server) was great! She gave us a free calamari appetizer for mentioning yelp and a free dessert because we were celebrating our anniversary. We sat in the heated patio part of the restaurant with a beautiful view. This is a great place for a romantic dinner! We would love to try their lobster and other dishes the next time... and definitely come back for their yummy chowder too! Love, love, love this place! The dining experience fell short of expectations. We ordered the Cioppino, a seafood soup that included a variety of seafood such as shrimp and a crab leg. The dish initially seemed promising; however, the experience took a turn when we began eating the crab leg. Upon cracking it open, we noticed a strong ammonia odor, which is typically a sign of spoilage and raises serious food safety concerns. When our server came to check on us, I mentioned the issue. Shortly afterward, a manager approached our table and asked how I would like to resolve the situation--offering either a replacement crab leg or a complimentary dessert. Before I had a chance to respond, he decided on his own to serve a dessert after the meal and took the crab away without further discussion. I felt I wasn't given the opportunity to fully express my concerns or preferences. I called the manager back to express my dissatisfaction--not just with the crab, but also with how the situation was being handled. I explained that the strong ammonia smell indicated the crab was likely not fresh and could pose a health risk. I also mentioned that due to the unpleasant odor, we were unable to enjoy the rest of the soup. The manager responded that they would discount the dish by removing the charge for the crab portion, which I felt did not adequately address the broader issue. Eventually, a higher-level manager came to speak with us. After I explained the situation again, she kindly offered to either remake the dish without crab or remove the item from our bill. At that point, we no longer had an appetite, so we chose to have the dish removed. While our server was attentive and provided excellent service throughout the evening, the overall experience was disappointing due to the quality of the food and how the initial concerns were handled. 1st time: we ordered a cup of clam chowder and the clams/mussels appetizer. Clam chowder is worthy of the hype... the best clam chowder ever. No doubt. As for the clams and mussels, they didn't taste particular fresh and were waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too salty. And the bread was overly stale. Clam chowder was bomb, the clams/mussels were terrible. Oh, and the reason I only ordered a cup was that my menu only showed a cup option, no bowl or breadbowl. The wife told me that her menu showed the option. Double-checked my menu and yep, no option for a bowl or breadbowl. And we noticed that the other tables were given bread even before they even opened their menus. We never received bread. It states on the menu that you must ask for it, but why did the other tables get it without asking? Oh well. Very good service on this visit. 2nd time: we went back to the clam chowder. This time, I asked for it in a breadbowl even though the menu was an "old" one with no listing for it. Chowder was just as excellent as before, only this time the waiter gave it to me in a bowl. I told him that I asked for it in a breadbowl, and he said no, you asked for it in a bowl. My wife said "no, he asked for a breadbowl". Homeboy makes a face and takes it off the table without saying shit. What a punk. Then comes back with it. Tasted great though. Wife ordered the creme brule. She liked it, but how can you mess it up? But she said it could have used sweeter strawberries and they could have lost the whipped cream... both of which were not mentioned on the menu. Terrible, terrible service. Oh, and this time we asked for the bread on the side and it was ice cold. Nice. 5 star clam chowder, 1 star on everything else. Granted, we only ordered a couple of other items though. But the prices are hiiiiigh and the service was terrible the second time there. read more

Where should you take out of town guests for fish and good clam chowder sourdough bowls? Here! But definitely not for the service. I'm sorry, but if you are going to be the welcoming person for a restaurant, be welcoming; especially if you are a waitress. This place has bad service, but ok food. Ok, maybe I'm being a little harsh. The food was pretty good, but I've definitely had better. I think I may have had a bad taste in my mouth from the horrible service. We felt that our waitress Susie was kind of impolite and inattentive. She was completely absent the whole night and the restaurant did not seem that busy. I never did get a refill on my coke. Also, we ordered chowder to start, then wanted the entrees. The waitress said she would bring bread first to get us started. We weren't halfway through the cup of chowder before yet another server showed up with our entrees. So much for taking time and savoring...we needed to get through the meal before it got cold! About 5 min after the food arrived and we had finished the chowder and started in on the entrees, our waitress finally came back with the bread and butter. Oh well, it looked good but we've already moved on. (I did steal a piece towards the end of the meal - the bread tasted great, but was probably better when it was warm when it first came out). On a happier note the clam chowder is indeed pretty good. I can see why they have won awards for it. It's not your typical chowder. It has more flavor, a bit saltier, but also seems like there are extra ingredients I can't quite put my finger on. I loved it though. I like it in a bread bowl to keep the soup piping hot. overall food is great, service sucks, and prices are high. Will I come back??? in a cold day, yes to get the chowder. I went for a Saturday night birthday dinner and was impressed with the quality of service and food. It did start on a bit of sour note when my friend called for reservations and was told in an impatient manner that they would have no idea how long it would take to be seated. We went anyway and were pleased that all the other staff were so cheerful and friendly. Yes, the wait was long but we had requested a window seat, and the bartender was great fun so it was OK. To correct what someone said below, we watched him make 3 or 4 of the huge "bucket of fire" drinks and fully half of the volume after ice was filled with alcohol, about 4 l-o-n-g shots of booze. We were seated at Tara's table-- such a sweet and dedicated gal, just an excellent waitress! They serve a good bread right away. The fried calamari appetizer was not at all greasy, perfectly done, and came promptly along with the wines. They have a good selection by the glass for about $7-10. The main courses were stellar: I wish I had ordered the $30 white seabass special because it was absolutely fresh (local caught), a huge cut, and perfectly cooked in what looked like Panko crumbs. It came with some large fried prawns that were also rated great. I'd give that dish 5 stars. The $24 swordfish was excellent (four stars)- a nice thick piece of light-colored meat (none of the fishy-tasting dark stuff) over garlic mashed potatoes and vegetables. Those were the only two entrees ordered - we all had similar tastes. Then a birthday song, cheesecake with rasberry sauce, and we left feeling very happy with this restaurant. I have come around this area from time to time and always want to come here, finally we did it and it's not worth waiting. This time I came with my cousin who were visiting me from oversea and it's their first time here, so I really wanted to impress them .. too bad this place is the big let down.... 2 stars belong to the best ocean view that we had, they had a nice view here but that about it, our waitress was ok. but she just did her day job - not friendly or anything yet we didn't expect the best service from her. However we do expect the better food Since you paid about $ 24- 35 per plate and most of the food just really bad esp the whole $ 35 Crab that we ordered was very very salty, we though we are chewing salt ( I kid you not ) My cousin who hardly say anything, they even said they couldn't eat this crab that they ordered. When I told the waitress she let us change the new one but It didn't get any better . When I ask her how this crab so salty she just said that how it is ............... We just speechless. I say it again we are willing to pay $35 for one whole crab but NOT for this very very salty one. By the way in fornt of this resturant they show this BIG CRAB in the glass container but both two crabs that they served us were just the 1/2 of that size that they showed us F.Y. I. they sell this crab NOT by the wieght of crab but they sell it as a half or a whole crab. Let me start with, don't make reservations. You won't be seated right away, in fact you will wait 20-30 minutes until the other party is still eating on your "reserved table" sound ridiculous right. Well it was.. but wait it doesn't end there. We came to celebrate my moms birthday, which we added on the reservation. Did she get a happy birthday? Nope, not even a dessert at the end of our meal seriously. Which was utterly a catastrophe,my husband had the mahi mahi which looked like a piece of chicken strip of how tiny it was. I got the rib eye; i originally wanted a New York steak but waiter raves about the rib eye steak and the size was a whole lot bigger and persuaded me to get. I mean waiter usually gives good advise right? Well, rib eye was huge but was brought to me burnt and ton of fat than any meat. Asked for medium, got rare. No big deal, I was hoping for a fantastic flavorful piece of steak. Not the case, to be honest with you all, it's not worth coming to this restaurant and paying $150-250. I would have had a better enjoyable dinner at McDonalds and would have left satisfied. I then ask for a salad, which he had forgotten at the time of bringing my bill. So I told him to just remove the salad if he had charged me; he didn't but over charged me on another item. Worst service I have ever had and the food was bland, for a local I will not be recommending anyone to this establishment. PS. What a neat spot! My friends and I decided to take a weekend trip to Monterey and explore. So glad we found this place. You walk into a beautiful bar area with cute little jellyfish lights and a great ambiance. We didn't have reservations but they were able to accommodate us on the outside patio (with heating lamps :) Not to mention the entire restaurant sits over the water. We shared a lot of small bites and all were unique and flavorful. My favorites were the crab cakes and artichoke. Favorite entrees included the stuffed Sole and Macadamia crusted halibut with mouth watering sweet potatoes. The food was exceptional and this place was busy! The crowd seemed so laid back and peaceful. What really stood out to all of us was how great the service was. Our waiter Derek was on top of everything and never missed a beat we never had to ask for anything the entire meal. About halfway through our meal the manager Steven walked by our table with a great big smile and asked us how everything was for us. This kind of hospitality just isn't seen anymore and was an unexpected surprise. We sparked up some small conversation and asked him for some local hot sots to check out while spending our time in the area and he gave us great local insight. We really felt like we were dining in a friends home, it was just so welcoming and gracious. Title: "Hooked on Fish Hopper!" If you're in Monterey and haven't been to Fish Hopper, are you even living? This place is like the seafood version of a warm hug from a long-lost friend. The moment you walk in, you're greeted with the aroma of fresh fish that's so good, it could make a mermaid weep with joy. Let's talk about the menu! It's a treasure chest of ocean delights. I ordered the clam chowder, and I swear it was so creamy and delicious that I briefly considered moving in and setting up camp. The fish tacos? Oh, my taste buds threw a fiesta, complete with maracas and confetti! And the view! I mean, dining here is like eating in a postcard. You could be staring at the ocean, but you'll likely be too busy savoring your meal to notice. Just don't be surprised if you catch a seagull giving you the side-eye; they're clearly jealous of your plate. The service is top-notch, too. Our server was so friendly that I half expected them to invite me to their family barbecue. They even suggested pairing my meal with a cocktail that was so refreshing, I could practically hear it whispering sweet nothings to my soul. In short, if you want to experience seafood that makes your heart sing and your stomach do a happy dance, Fish Hopper is the place to be. I worked at Fish Hopper a year and a half ago for almost 2 years. I loved the job, the people and staff and the beautiful establishment. Unfortunately I was let go on Thanksgiving day for over charging a guest $2.85 or $3.00 4 days prior, that I didn't recall doing (why would I overcharge $3.00 or steal $3.00 from a guest?), I asked to repay the amount and write the guest an apology myself and was told no and let go, with no prior complaints or work issues. I am writing this because I am a great server and manager. I have managed restaurants for 25 years and have opened several mom and pop restaurants in Northern California from the ground up. I have re-applied many times but can't get any response not even a sorry your not rehireable, I would really love a chance to come back and be a part of the team again. I would still write the apology I was told that there was new management and a good possibility that I could come back and rejoin the team.
