The Flat is like a box of chocolates...you never know what you are going to get. And that's why I LOVES IT! It's amazing how on the left half of the bar it's chill enough to play cards with friends (trust me, I did it with Uno) and on the right half of it's a cool dance party (think Janet Jackson's video for "That's the Way Love Goes"....two vibes without any dividers. Their back patio is awesome-perfect for a nice night. The crowd is always great and there is usually a DJ spinning great beats (not too techno, not too top 40, but just right). Great bar for late night bites - I've only had their pizza, but it def works. The last props I will give the Flat is that it's been around for several years now and it has been able to sustain a great environment after its "15 minutes of fame". Most bars these days lose their heat after their first year...not the Flat. I took off one star because they have a minimum charge on credit cards. Frozen Mojitos. I wish I could leave just those two words as my review, but I fear being filtered. Seriously though, you need to go for these mojitos. I had not been here in years (I don't know how long), but we happened to pass by and decided to pull over and get some frozen mojitos. The crowd was smaller than I last remember (my first trip I was thrown 'bows to get to the bar) but it wasn't lame. People were dancing, music was playing, everyone was having a grand ol time. I was looking for a Monday night spot and I think this might be it. I mean if you're looking for a bar to chill at this may not be the spot as its a little classier. Its a nice lounge. The bar staff are friendly and so is the clientele. Its not a big place though so it can get crowded. For a monday night it was pretty busy. At about 10pm there were about 20 people abut by 11:30 there were about 50. The bartender told me that it tends to get busier. The decor was good. The couches were nice and comfy. I saw several couples curled up there. I only saw a couple of single girls there. There was a group of 3 girls and a set of 2 girls. So from a guys perspective its not a "rich" environment. Come on its a monday night. From a girls perspective it may be better. I didn't see anyone approach and talk to these single girls that I saw though. There is a patio thats really nice. I can see how it would be awesome in the fall or early spring, but yesterday was hot and and humid and so I was drawn back inside although there were several people sitting out. The frozen Mojito: Hmmm... It was good. But it did not pack a punch which to me is a necessity. maybe if I had 3 or 4 of those. Not sure. Overall, considering that it was a monday night, and H-Town needs help on a monday night...it was as the Yelp stars say... A-OK. read more

Apparently this used to be a printing press and then some sort of office. It is in the middle of a residential area. The lack of Zoning in Houston is nut-so I was here for New Year's Eve. The frozen mojitos are great (they aren't from a mix, so says the bartender) and they will add in a shot of whatever you like for free. This is the most diverse group of people I have ever seen at a bar in Houston. These are "hipsters" (I counted 5 guys in black chucks and thick black glasses) but not the pretentious kind. At the very end of the night, everyone in the bar was doing the cha cha slide!, and that's fine with me. I parked on the street (for free), got in with no crazy bouncer asking me for 8 forms of ID. The DJ was good. There was no "dance floor" but we made one anyway.. Next time I will try the food! read more

We had a birthday celebration here and I can say a few things about this hidden gem in Houston that are mostly positive. First of all, when you enter the bar, you feel like you are literally in someone's apt (or 'flat'). Old couches, old style tables, and one long bar with a couple of solid bartenders who are more heavy handed than Muhammed Ali. A jack and coke will run you around 5 bucks and it's basically a double. I like that. There is also a wonderful patio out back where you can chillax and enjoy the summer sun, however be wary of neighbors. I can imagine i'd be annoyed if every sat night people were drinking outside my window too. They actually have some solid djs here as well so its' a brilliant place to take over with your posse of friends. read more

Great spot!Great Drinks! Good Happy Hour!I come here very often, it is definitely a hidden gem in Midtown! The parking is a little challenging due to the location. The vibe is very laid back! The happy hour DJ AD(I believe) plays jams(like music you like to hear for happy hour) for their Happy Hour. The Happy hour drink prices are pretty fair, and to top it off their pizza is amazing!! I was in Houston about a month ago, and loved this place. Good drinks, good music, good vibe and had a nice patio outside. The drinks were moderately priced and also a nice variety from frozen drinks and hardcore drinks. I had the rum punch (151 included), pina colada!!! and the frozen mojito. All three drinks were excellent and the DJ that day was awesome. Nice hiphop set and great music. The staff was also very accommodating and easy going. We were there on a Thursday night just before 10. We needed a quick bite and a drink so we ordered a pizza and a glass of red wine. The place was almost empty both on the patio and inside and the music was rather loud. The pizza was ok but not phenomenal. The service was fast and the waiters pleasant. I went to The Flat 1/22/11 to celebrate my birthday. My friends and I showed up around 10pm. There was a DJ there and a few people scattered around. But it was really cozy! It almost felt like we were chillin at someone's place :) The music was great, the bartenders were friendly, they joked around a lot and the best part was that they poured with a heavy hand. I think I was slightly buzzed before I was done with the first martini (I'm a little bit of a lightweight, but I'm definitely not an easy pushover when it comes to drinks LOL) We had the Black bean Nachos which were pretty darn good. So were the dumplings with the ginger sauce and soy sauce. I've never had a mojito before then, and when I had their frozen mojito, I was an instant fan! The rasptini I had before hand had quite a bite to it. The melontini was to die for. As the night progressed it got a bit crowded, but not to the point where I or any of my friends were uncomfortable. It felt just like a chill house party. The DJ never fell off. I enjoyed every song played. My other friends showed up, tried to say it was whack, dragged me to another bar down the way and turns out THAT place was whack. The only part I regret about celebrating my birthday at The Flat was the fact that we even left in the first place (tryying to please other people instead of doing what I wanted to do on MY birthday) only to end up in the emptiest bar I've ever seen in my 31 years of living. I love this place. My friends and I have declared this one of our new "kick it" spots. We live in Nothwest Houston. We're heavy drivers so the distance is NUTHIN. This also helps weed out the friends we really don't like hanging with because they don't know how to act in public, especially when they drink. LOL. Every single time I've been to The Flat, it has been completely different. Different vibes, different music, and different crowd. The one thing that doesn't change is that killer frozen mojito! While the inside isn't sparkly & new, it's just dingy enough to be a relaxed place to sit and chill. The bartenders are quirky and fun, and there's never a shortage of random people to meet. It's the perfect neighborhood bar. If you've never been before, make sure you keep your eye out as you drive south down Commonwealth (one way) - there's a small sign, and it's on the left. I'm really torn about The Flat. I thought it was going to be spectacular. I saw that it was a hidden little gem in my favorite part of town so I expected the world out of it. However, when we arrived the place was packed. I could hardly get through the floor to get to the bar. There were people awkwardly standing around couches and making it hard to try to find a place to hang out. There was a DJ spinning, but it was a bit loud for my taste. I couldn't hear anything. The place is so small, it's hard to enjoy a DJ unless you take all the couches out and make it a dance floor. The prices for drinks were a bit steep and they didn't have the beverages out that they were supposed to have. They had a line of beers on the counter displaying what they had, and everything I ordered, they didn't actually have. We started to leave because it was so crowded and all we wanted was a patio, which we couldn't find. I guess the bouncer heard us and told us that we had to go through the crowd of people, past the DJ, and then we'd find the patio. It was a TOTAL different bar out there. It was chill and cool. It felt like a bar you'd see in a 90's swanky detective film or something. Nice wooden accents every where, strung lights, a steady murmur of voices, clinking glasses and laughter. We even met some really cool people out there. I think I'd like to go back during the week and check it out again. I love coming to the Flat. It's a great bar to catch up with friends and also catch some good house music. I've been here on plenty of random Saturdays and still run into old friends. I've been to the Flat probably 10 times so far and have always ended up having more fun than expected (or intended for that matter). They make great drinks and have pretty decent bar bites. My boyfriend and I shared the veggie pizza once and it was not bad. There is sometimes a DJ... it varies. I've danced there on occasion when the music is really good. I like the fact it is located in a neighborhood setting and is tucked away from the big city life, yet still close to Montrose. All the previous reviews pretty much hit it on the mark - a cute place with yummy mojitos. I was also pleasantly reminded how much cheaper drinks can be in Houston since I live around Chicago. The crowd seemed to be people mostly in their late 20s/early 30s. (At least on the night that I was there.) I'm 23, and I felt a tiny bit out of place. Then again, I was there for my brother's birthday party, and he was turning 28. The patio is pretty big and allows a good space for large groups. I'd say it'd be better to dress up a little for this place. The only downside? One-stall bathrooms for both gals and guys! No one wants to wait in a six-person line after a couple of drinks. Still, I'd love to come back next time I'm in town! read more

Tree green mojitos with flinty pieces of mint are the main attraction at this bar. I was dragged to this place one night, casually dressed as a Hooters girl (don't ask- I have a degree and a corp job). And my friend promised the best mojitos in Houston. I'm always a fan of "Best" places- this looked to be promising. The Flat is in a house shrouded by palm trees. Sketch time! And a mixture of smoke and old school jams diffuse through the air. Oh yeah! And inside it feels like some British African colony in the '70s with thick must and hazy darkness. I'm feelin' it! But that's where the party ends. The vibe is good. The people are cool and quiet. The bartenders are vaguely pleasant. But the mojitos don't deliver. I expected some artistic bottle whipping and fluid twirling but all I got was the thick slush from a 7-11 machine (haven't seen one of those since I left Dallas as a tot). In the bartender's defense, she did swirl the slush in my glass like a Dairy Queen cone. There was more ice than flavor and it seemed artificial. Not a huge fan and it didn't get me twisted like my drink's contents. If you want a cool place to go with great, non-puerile energy this is the place. I can see this place being super amazing during the summer with the outdoor patio (very cool setup by the way). The music is awesome and its a mature crowd. My experience at the flat was pretty awesome. I met Corey (who told me all about the daily music digs) and Nick (the bartender). As per the other yelp reviews (and the reverse happy hour...til close!) I tried the frozen mojitos and the house special pizza. The pizza was a flatter, crispy style that came with pepperoni, jalapeño and cheesy goodness that is the kind of delicious concoction that pleases the taste buds. The frozen mojitos is a must try, and for those who love their cocktails 3-4 of these will get you going pretty good. I would have loved to check this place out on a Friday or Saturday. On Sunday they had a pretty kick ass house DJ that was spinning vinyls (and it was damn good). Even on a Sunday it got pretty hopping towards midnight. I went to The Flat with my husband the weekend after Thanksgiving to meet up with a family friend for her birthday. It was my first time there and I really liked the place. The Flat gets 4 stars alone JUST for the cozy atmosphere it offers. I didn't order anything due to we were going to a karaoke bar afterwards but the music, the maturity of the people all led me to give this place a 4 star rating. Parking is horrible. I know it's not necessarily the fault of this establishment, but it usually takes numerous passes before finding anything. Music is generally good, but loud. No problem really, but there are not places inside to sit, just a few church pews against the wall and a little more seating. Outside area is nice. But again, if this place is crowded, prepare to stand all night. The bartender made a specialty pizza thats not on the menu. The wings were tasty and the sauce to dip it in was really good. If your a spicy food fan, try the Empanadas, that Calypso Sauce will light you up!! Ive been told that their food is frozen and that they just buy it from somewhere.
