Driven by here so many times, but friends finally dragged me here for Karaoke on a Friday night. WOW what a show! It is an eclectic mix of Houston's young and pretty crowd and the townies. The singing was not bad either. Santa Claus running the show was a little much, but didn't take away from the show too much. Drinks were very reasonably priced and quick service. Will I go back? Compared to the bar next door, PJ's is a bit more lively and has more things going on like Karaoke night. I caught my first one recently and it was a big hit but I really wish the sound level was either turned down or mixed better so it wouldn't be so ear piercing. It's been two days later and my ears are still ringing! Overall, this is a classic dive bar and a look into Houston's past (the 90's lol) before the mattress stores and the cookie cutter apartments took over the area. It literally looks like an old house with stressed beams and creeky floors. They serve drinks in plastic cups which I actually appreciate since every time I get a drink from a glass from a dive bar, I wonder whether I'm going to catch something. Plastic is just fine with me. As far as it being a sports bar, it would have to depend on your definition of a sports bar. They have 3 TVs downstairs and an ancient looking projector thing upstairs that should have been tossed in the trash 10 years ago, so in that regard, if there is an Astros/Rockets/Texans game, you can go watch it there among friends and be happy so technically, it is a sports bar; however, if you're looking for a place with dozens of TVs each tuned into a different NFL package game while also covering other sports at the same time, it may not meet your definition of a sports bar. Had so much for a friend's birthday on a Friday!! I never heard or knew of this spot until a friend decided to have her birthday party here. This place is such a cute hole in the wall spot! The downstairs was the chill area however you got upstairs, that's the party!!! It got pretty pack quick and it was fun seeing and hearing the awesome people doing karaoke!!! THURSDAY STEAK NIGHT 5:30PM - 10PM TWO 16 OZ T-BONE STEAK WITH SALAD AND BAKED POTATO AND A PITCHER OF BEER FOR $31! Me and a friend wanted to get a steak deal on a Thursday night and this one of the top places that popped up. We didn't realize the time and came around 10:17 and the bartender told us that it was over but he was so sweet and was able to get the griller to make us our meal last minute. We originally came here just to eat dinner so we were glad we got to try it and didn't go somewhere else. The SALAD was basic. It was just spinach, with a couple tomatoes and croutons. The salad dressing was in the beer carrier and I believe it was Italian dressing. The BAKED POTATO came undressed. We were given a container that had everything we needed. Butter, sour cream, bacon bits, and cheddar cheese. That was dangerous cause I definitely abused it. My potato was fully loaded. I should not have been allowed to add as much butter and sour cream as I wanted haha. The steak deals I've had has been ribeye but this is the first steak night deal where I've had T-BONE steak. You could tell it was made on the grill because there was a nice char flavor. It was a perfect medium and the flavor was good. There was A1 sauce if you needed it. I actually put it on my potato and not my steak. For the pitcher of beer, the bartender asked if we wanted LONE STAR or ZIEGENBOCK and we went to with Ziegenbock. We got two red solo cups to share it. The weather was great so we sat outside. There was a tv to watch the game but it was a little small. This was literally a house they made into a bar. It's very homey and just relaxed. Not fussy. The RESTROOM is upstairs on the right. The service was great and I had a great experience so I can see myself coming back. read more

Quiet little neighborhood bar in the heart of the Montrose, but still has a lot of good regulars. Bartenders are really friendly and will help you on whatever specials they have on whatever night. Nice place to watch a game or just to hang out for a little while. It's a little small, but it's a good place to just relax for a not so big night out. They even have a room upstairs where they have special themed nights sometimes. Stand up comedy, karaoke, steak night and others are part of this place. Every time they host something like this, the place comes alive and everyone can have some fun. I think I would like to come to steak night sometime, and maybe even the comedy night. The event nights start around 8 PM and lasts about a couple of hours. On Sunday's during NFL season, the bar will have various drink specials, and it will be a bit busier. They are closed Sunday's in the off season, but football is a great time to hang here. Arrive early if there's a noon Texans game because it will get hectic once it kicks in. College football Saturday is also a good time to watch games here too! Come on down and have some fun, laugh at jokes, sing some songs and enjoy some drinks at this little hole in the wall bar. Went for the first time last night for steak night. The service was excellent and the steak was awesome. I asked my waiter his name and it was the owner, PJ himself :D .....very personable. Came in with a friend to try their steak night on Thursdays. 2 - 16 Oz steaks with 2 potatoes, 2 salads & a pitcher of beer for 31 bucks! Setting: The place looks like a 2 story house on the outside. The inside has a bar with game machines & 2 or 3 TVs. Upstairs is another bar area, karaoke stage, & restrooms. Food: The steak I had was cooked perfectly how I liked, medium rare! It was a pretty juicy steak with some fat in it! It wasn't seasoned, but they gave us salt & pepper to season it ourselves. I wish more steak places let us season our steak because I had issues with too salty steaks at different places. The salad was ok & u can't go wrong with a bake potato with your choice of fixings! So, this place wasn't expected. If there was ever an epitome of a dive, it's PJ's. But that's exactly what makes this place so damn enjoyable. It's tiny, not well lit, stuffy and hot. But it's cozy, comfortable, and a place that seems well suited to relaxation and basically not giving a fuck. Everyone here is nice, though quite busy. I haven't had the food nor have I been present for karaoke night, yet. If you're looking for a nice place to chill, this is it. The karaoke on Fridays is an absolute blast. The man running the karaoke night (Jesse) is an excellent singer, a great host, and makes for a very smooth and enjoyable night. The female bartender that was working while I was there was incredibly friendly and attentive. However, I am rating this place with one star due to the behavior of the owner, PJ. I spent around 3 hours here, and had bought 8 Dos Equis over this time. My girlfriend was thirsty, so I went over to the upstairs bar and asked if I could have some water. PJ grabbed a bottled water out of the fridge and told me that it would be $2.00. I told PJ that I was not interested in a bottled water, and asked if I could get a small cup of tap water instead. When the female bartender was working the upstairs bar previously, she had given me tap water for free without any trouble (as every other bar in Texas does). PJ told me that there was no free water. I mentioned the tap water I had received ~30 minutes prior, and PJ told me that he would not give me tap water because he "was trying to make some money". I told him that my friends and I had purchased many beers, and would continue to do so, but he told me that he did not care and began to ignore my requests for water. Shortly after this incident, I went downstairs and closed out with the female bartender, who was very surprised to hear about PJ's actions. She immediately gave me some free tap water and apologized, but I no longer wanted to support a place that was owned by someone who refused to give paying patrons free tap water. PJ, if you are reading this, I am sorry for telling you off before I left, but there is no excuse for not giving patrons free tap water. I am surprised that you treat your customers that way, especially at a bar, where it can be a health concern if patrons can not afford to buy bottled water at the end of the night. I hope you change your attitude and treat future customers with more respect. read more

Extremely disappointed with the behavior of the karaoke DJ last night. My good friend, who happens to be African American, made a request to karaoke. An hour goes by and it's noted that others are being called up to sing who put their requests in AFTER my friend. We are patient and wait another hour. At this point my friend goes to ask to DJ why he has yet to be called (2 hours) and the DJ looks at him then looks away and ignores him. Racist much? There is nothing to debate or argue over here. One of the best and friendliest dive bars in Houston. Whether coming in to unwind after work or to watch sports on TV, the prices are low and the company is great. If you are looking for a posh place that would belong in Uptown Park or on Main Street, this place isn't for you. In addition to the Steak Night on Thursday (previously mentioned), there are great crowds for NFL Sundays (NY Giants and Steelers fans in addition to Texans and Cowboys) and Karaoke night which is held every other Friday night. NFL Sundays include pot luck lunches and there are a lot of great cooks among the loyal patrons of PJs. To get your food on, PJs is across the street from Bibas and West Gray Cafe, as well as a short walk to Barnaby's. No sports on TV? No problem. They even have the occasional band upstairs and it's a great place to bring a group if you want to take over upstairs (have your NFL fantasy draft or whatever suits ya). As far as drinks, there are a few beers on tap, but the icy cold bottles are the best bet. There are some good bottle beers other than the standard fare, especially Stella Artois (commonly known as "the wife beater"). If you like your wine, you better not have a complicated pallate, but he'll always have something available (and the white is always super cold). I came for their Thurday Steak Nights to watch the NBA Finals game and I was pretty impressed. $31 will buy you two steaks, 2 potatoes, 2 salads, and a pitcher of beer (Bud light, miller light, lone star, ziegenbock). The steak was juicy and cooked at my preferred medium rare. Not a bad deal at all for a dive bar. I would advise sitting upstairs if you want more open space. Neighborhood dive with eccentric, but friendly locals. I used eccentric, but the term is probably more accurate to happy drunks. You'll find the owner often tends the bar. I don't chat with him much, but he's always in good spirits. Thursday steak nights are delicious. $17 for a steak and potato. Beer specials during happy hour is a dollar off certain brands. PJ's is, quite simply, Houston's best kept karaoke secret! I was told about it in glowing terms it by a couple of fellow karaoke mavens, and went to meet them there one Friday night. I arrived early and my honest first impression was "what a pit!" Now don't get me wrong, I've been in dive bars before this this place is seriously divey. Small, cluttered, limited beer menu--what could my friends have been thinking? Well, I found out a little later as I hear a sound check for karaoke upstairs. I wandered up, cheap beer in hand, and saw Jesse, the man, the myth, the legend, doing the final tweaking on his sound board. As soon as he was done, the few of us who were there started singing. It was good solid karaoke, but then, around 10:15 pm the upstairs started to fill up rapidly with the most appreciative, enthusiastic, talented bunch of karaoke singers/fans I'd encountered in years of singing in Houston. Before one song I let them know it was my first time at PJ's and they welcomed me with enthusiastic cheers and smiles. If you want to feel some serious karaoke love, come sing at PJ's. Some notes: unlike most KJs, Jesse likes to harmonize with the singers: not intrusively--he's not trying to steal your thunder--he just likes to harmonize a bit. So you need to be ready for that. He does have a good voice. I noted above that it's a best-kept secret, but people do know about and love this place so the rotation gets very long very quickly. Nearly all the singers are good, usually, so you will be in for a night of great listening, but you will only get to sing a couple of times beyond about 10:30 or so. Want to get in an extra song or two? Show up at 10 when things are just heating up. Bring your A-game as a singer. People at PJs PERFORM. They don't just stand there stiffly and stare at the screen, picking out the lyrics hesitantly as they flit by. They dance, they move, they entertain. Want to experience karaoke magic? But the most awesome is the way PJ himself went all out for a grad school graduation party we held for two of our friends. When someone treats your family like family they become family. The Original Steak night is here, and it is excellent. If you're a football fan, pretty much any game is shown here (call to find out, for College and PJ is usually accomodating). During Crawfish Season, they serve excellent mud bugs, for a comparable amount. Also, Karaoke on Fridays is a ton of fun. It's just your standard liquor and beer, nothing fancy. An awesome little dive I know I'll be returning to shortly. I went to PJ's Friday Night for a friend's birthday, they were doing karaoke. Those who know me know I love Karaoke. And oddly enough this is the second bar named PJ's I've been to that does great karaoke (the first being in Waco). Drinks were strong and cheap. Jello shots were cheap and tasty, and dangerous. They have a limited food menu, but the tamales they were serving Friday night were seriously good, very spicy. The karaoke host was very lively, would jump in and sing backups, and did a few songs himself. He enhanced the night when he did rather than taking away from it like most do when they jump in the middle of a set. PJ's is a solid choice for a fun evening with a much different vibe than you get down the street in midtown. read more

Some friends and I were looking for a change of scenery, so we decided to check out PJ's. We went for the Saints game on a Sunday afternoon, and it was pretty crowded on the outdoor patio. There were all sorts of football games on (KC, etc), but there were only two small tvs outside. When I say small, I mean tvs the same size as what I have in my house! On Sundays, the kitchen isn't open, so apparently everyone in the bar brings food to share, like a potluck. I think this is a cute idea. There weren't that many people in the bar total - about 30-40, so this is a feasible solution. I don't think you could have such a setup with a larger crowd (for example, if you were at the Mezzanine Lounge). A friend did some exploring, and there's actually a small upstairs portion with a couple of futons and tables. We watched the Saints game upstairs using the projector (the only "tv" upstairs). I didn't like how the image was no longer HD, and there were lines on the image. Someone explained this is a projector problem, but I've watched games on projectors at other bars, and haven't noticed the lines. I do like how PJ's allows dogs inside the establishment, at least on Sundays. I suppose this is because the kitchen isn't open. I'm definitely a dog person, but if you are not, don't go. Of the 40 or so people there on a Sunday afternoon, there were at least four dogs present. The clientele is pretty laidback, which I like. My hard ciders were $5 each, and there was only one choice (Fox Barrel). It wasn't bad, but certainly not my favorite. Nevertheless, at least they had one option. I was really disappointed in the lack of tvs and their sizes, hence the two stars (Meh, I've experienced better). In my mind, a sports bar should have big tvs and lots of them. How do you call yourself a sports bar when there's only one viewing option upstairs (a projector, 0 tvs)? I realize not every place can be like Stadia Sports Grill, but can they at least install one or two tvs upstairs? Is this a good dive bar to just hang out and chill? Yes. Best karaoke in town! The only place that has every song you could ever think of and more! This place is a dive bar at its finest, in the best possible way ever. It's never crowded except, on Fridays. They only do karaoke on Fridays and this place is pretty famous for it. Everyone here sings along and dances to you rocking the house and it's a pretty amazing. I've never been to a karaoke bar where your audience is so hyped and engaging. This bar knows no strangers, if you're in the mood for a good time and you think you're a karaoke master, look no further. The mother of all karaoke nights is right here on West Gray! Lets talk about the spot, upstairs and downstairs, both have full bars. The jello shots are strong!!!! They are lethal and you will mess up your song if you have more than 3 so, beware! There's plenty of outdoor space to lounge should you not be too into the karaoke madness happening upstairs. Oh, p.s., you WILL fall down the stairs if you're not watching what you're doing. Being right next to Cecil's and a bit nondescript, I imagine this place gets overlooked a fair bit. Don't overlook it. It's not the largest, best-lit bar, or the one with the most kitschy ambiance. Thank goodness. What it does have are decently priced drinks, a bartender that sits around and chats with the patrons on slow nights (but ALWAYS gets up without an instant's hesitation to actually tend the bar, even if he's trying to squeeze in a quick dinner), a comfortable upstairs, and weekly karaoke with a good song selection and a KJ who is exactly the sort I'd want to be. Encouraging, happy to hear new people, glad when songs both popular and obscure are chosen, and entirely likely to sing along on harmony & background parts. Not only is this place one of my boyfriend & I's go to for a fun-filled night of amazing karaoke singers on Wednesdays & Fridays, but it's also a nice spot for a ton of of other things. I feel like I have seen everything from stand up comedy, to watching the Astros & Texans, seeing Horse Head Theatre's intimate, live musical show a few months ago to delicious steak nights & also a nice secret spot when it's crawfish season. Did I mention the owner LOVES dogs? This place is pet friendly minus special nights of food, but ALWAYS welcome on the nice patio out front. I came down to Houston to visit a fellow Michigander, so in our agenda had to include 3 things - good beer, good texas food & watching Lions/MSU. PJs had all 3. A quick yelp search showed us that this placed had the sunday ticket, so even though my friend had never been we decided to check it out. From the outside it looks like a house, and from the inside it feels like a house with a bar in it. The bartender quickly noticed my Lions jersey and said "they're on upstairs". We meander upstairs and its like your grandmas basement with at projection screen showing the game. We had pretty much the whole upstairs to ourselves and it was fantastic. After the 1st round of beer we went back down to get round two. The bartender noticed we were both ordering two red solo cups of the same beer, so he was like oh get a pitcher for a dollar more. He then gave us 2 nearly full solo cups and a 3/4th full pitcher. A bartender that saves you money?! what another win. And to top it off as we were going upstairs we saw a buffet of awesome food. Some patrons yelled at us to grab a plate & dig in, but we were pretty full from Chicken and Waffles. The Lions pulled out the W, but PJ's stole my heart. Since I left I keep sending my friend harassing texts about how she should make this her regular bar. and she has. Today I got a text that PJ's had oysters...
