We ate here last night and the food was amazing. We had a party of 19 and everything came out hot and tasty! My husband had the NY Strip and I had the Walleye and they were both so good! My dad had the baby back ribs and said they were the best he's ever had. We ordered Moscow Mules which were made to perfection and also a few apps. We tried onion rings, pickle fries and the Michigan honey comb with cheeses and fruit. Delish! Atmosphere was beautiful. They have lots of outdoor seating as well as a private room we sat in. Tried this new restaurant a month ago and was delighted with the menu and service Ate at table outside but the inside of the restaurant seemed very welcoming Had the bluegill which you never see on a menu. It was very good as was the onion soup which I will order next time with no croutons. Just a personal preference due to carbs Side salad was good and my wife had a entree Michigan Apple Salad which was good But would have been better if they had not forgotten the apples. Another great dinner at the Forager. This time had bluegill, fries and cold slaw. The bluegills are fresh and lite- not heavy batter- fries were Fantastic and the cold slaw was the best we've tasted. Great food. I recommend the bone-in pork chop. The server, Kenady, handled our group of 10 without a flaw. Quick refills on drinks, every order was right, and very friendly. This is a great place to try! An old rustic hotel with a clean historic atmosphere. The menu is awesome and the servers/hostess were very attentive. Ok. First the good. Great service. Attentive and smiling server. Decent pours of cocktails and wine. The food came quickly and was hot and was tasty and filling. The bad. My gosh. We should of asked but we had the Perch Dinner "Special" for a Thursday night. Certainly a good portion. Good but nothing really special. I had French fries with mine and my wife had potato chips! Both came with very soggy coleslaw. Certainly not the most imaginative or nutritious sides but typical Michigan fare. Now the sticker shock. $23.00 a plate! Yikes. As mentioned, we should of asked but who would of thought? We also live in Summit county in Colorodo where the median house price is $600K. Pretty sure the same is not true for Howard City! We have eaten there before and other menu items were much more reasonably priced and well portioned and well prepared and delicious. The interesting part is that we have been going out, what one may say, frequently while spending our summer here. The refreshing part of those dining and pub experiences is that you walk away feeling well fed and not abused by the price. Unfortunately the same could not be said for our last experience at the Forager. Not sure we will be back. read more

Beautiful place, lovely decoration. Food was very good but took over 30min. Sat outside to enjoy the sun and beautiful deck but there was a very loud group of people who didn't stop smoking the hour we were there, made the whole experience very unpleasant and turn the beautiful place into a dive bar. Will not recommended and most likely will not return :( read more

We loved The Forager! We were a big group that showed up without a reservation, but were quickly accommodated with no problem. Our server, Courtney, was AWESOME. She was super sweet, funny, and took care of everything we needed. The food was GREAT - we especially loved their corn bread with herb butter, the steak (you HAVE to get it with the bleu cheese butter), and apple salad. We aren't local, unfortunately, but we'll be back anytime we're in town again. Cannot recommend enough! read more

Good bad and very ugly. The hostess seated us at a table with an air conditioning vent under the chair. When we asked to move to a different table we were told she would cover the vent. The vent was blowing so hard my wife looked like Marilyn Monroe standing over the air vent having her dress blown up. Next we waited about 15 minutes before our server showed up, Alissa, and she took our drink order and returned very quickly. Again we waited some time before she returned to take our order. We observed from our table all the servers were almost running through the restaurant. We also observed what looked like the managers speaking to each other and discussing things a guest should not hear. Alissa brings our salad and a bowl of French Onion Soup. She slammed them on the table so hard if there had not been a cap of cheese on the soup I would have worn it. I do want to say the soup was delicious and my wife was happy with the salad as well. The lady who delivered our meal, not the server, was very nice and did a great job. Let's talk about the main course. My wife had the walleye and it was delicious so were he mashed potatoes, her asparagus was over cooked and mushy. Overall pretty darn good. The market priced Ribeye was the toughest steak I have ever had. The baked potato was over cooked to the point it was hard inside. The asparagus was also mushy. One meal very good the other not so much. We read all the reviews and thought we would be in for a fantastic evening. The reality is sometimes a meal is not great but the service and whatever was going on in the background really turned the experience into a bad experience. The server was the worst we have ever had. We had never been here before and anticipated something wonderful, we were disappointed. Maybe it was a really bad night, maybe they are scrubbing the reviews. The Forager is top notch. I expect it will become harder to just pull up and grab a table. The space is a historic building in downtown Howard City. Why it's here I really cannot understand. The area is in the early stages of recovery. The owners appear to have made a considerable investment. The food is excellent. The meatloaf is one of their specialties and it was outstanding. On a date night in the area, decided to try this new place after reading all 3 of the previous reviews. My wife and I are both in agreement, this place is fabulous. We were greeted at the door as soon as we entered and we asked to be seated outside due to the deafening noise from the crowd inside. After being seated we received quick and friendly service from Tara. We already knew what we wanted from the menu link posted here. Prices are slightly high but I'm happy to pay for quality. We both had the whitefish dinner. We were surprised how quickly our food arrived. The menu has enough selection for varied tastes, but is limited enough so preparation is efficient. Our fish was done to perfection. The vegetable tonight was squash medley that was also perfectly done. The redskin mashed potatoes were just the way I like them, with skins and chunks. Forager was great tonight! My husband and I were impressed with the upgrades in decor, including acoustic tiles on the ceiling, since we last visited prior to COVID. It was exceptionally clean too! Much warmer, pleasant, upscale ambiance. We each ordered a different special for dinner and loved each.
