We attempted going here for brunch and online Yelp reviews of their Sunday brunch made it enticing enough to go and try We went on super bowl Sunday only to arrive there and see that the place was closed?!! There was a handmade sign that was buried in the snow some where detailing the hours they were opened on Sunday's but we couldn't understand why they weren't opened on this Sunday Very disappointing this was and left us trying to find another place to go to Management should of at least had a Sign up detailing the reason they were closed on that day 8/13/17 Came here for brunch and was greeted by the owner who we had seen on restaurant hunter She informed us of the lie procedure of taking menus and ordering at the counter and the food would be taken to us. Where to begin? The Freight House in Mahopac, NY is a remastered train station circa 1800's. The cafe that has grown to inhabit this beautifully antiquated building is nothing short of a perfect representation of the collective comfiness that is Mahopac. There are two distinct atmospheres: a relaxing yet fastidious cafe during the day, and a dimly lit but cozy haven for local music artists at night (Sat, 7:30). A surprising amount of sunlight exposes the haphazardly fun decor. Look around and a patron will see old-style railway crossing signs hung on the wall next to a rack of cowboy hats and pictures in mismatched frames. Take a seat in similarly mismatched chairs and tables as an attentive but casual staff greets you. Donna, the owner and head chef is probably there - moving deliberately about behind the counter and in the kitchen - a business only face breaks out into a beaming disposition as she talks about her dream made true. A spectacular array of teas and local coffees waft their scents into the air drawing you to them. Donna had anticipated this. The cups are right there. You feel strangely at home - muffins and other simple but delicious recipes stocked with local and organic produce await. Order away. At night, the Christmas lights come on. Literally. And it looks great. The night menu is ridiculously good. Flatbreads supplement the wine and beers - but oh my goodness!! Is that Nutella and caramelized bananas? Yes it is. Personally, I get a little crazy about the "Gorgonzola, fresh mint and mint cheese, fig and caramelized onion Flatbread." But the music! Absolutely great local musicians are drawn to this location and we're all better off for it. Anthony Gach and the Harmonic Aggression, a funk band, and Delia, a sensation with her voice and eukelele, are frequent flyers there. I sense a budding music movement there. Finally, weather permitting, the hungry can not only drive to The Freight, but RUN. The old railway has been transformed into paved hiking trails. Get your lunch via pulley and basket! Here is your obligatory outside seating, evening fire pit and free WiFi notification while we're at it. This is a local gem. The only downside is the limited seating - we need to be able to shove more people into this establishment. If you're in the area visiting, go. The Freight House Cafe is located in the heart of the lovely town of Mahopac. It is known as a favorite for locals as well as guests just passing through. I learned a lot about this fantastic gem while visiting not once, but TWICE in my short stay with family in Mahopac (I really liked it)! This unique cafe has an amazing history. It was built in 1872 and was the first building constructed for the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad branch. The line serviced freight and passengers from Golden's Bridge to Grand Central Terminal for more than 50 years. Donna Massaro, the owner and chef acquired the property over 100 years later and her dream of a wonderful, incredible restaurant became her reality. I enjoyed reading about the history as I relaxed in the warm intimate environment. As you enter The Freight House you are welcomed by a lovely front porch, that is cozy and welcoming. Once you open the front door you feel at home. The decor is eclectic, cozy and comfortable and is a place you can go to to relax and unwind. There are comfy couches, tables and chairs, and feels like a home away from home. There is a bar area to sit and enjoy coffee, a drink or a meal. There is also a beautiful outdoor back porch with seating which is peaceful and relaxing as well. The outdoor area can also service the walking/bike trail with an adorable pulley service that is really neat!! The menu offers a wide variety of homemade mouth-watering specialties. They offer gluten free products as well. Donna works hard to purchase locally grown products that are fresh, natural and organic. They have a coffee and tea bar, smoothies, a full bar with beer, martinis and wine, and offer farm to table juicing. They are known around town for their different flavors of fresh lemonade. I had a difficult time ordering because everything sounded amazing. I decided to pick something and then 'taste' everyone else in my party's meals! Everything I tasted during my 2 visits was fabulous. One visit I ordered the Maple flatbread and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a flatbread with egg, cheese, bacon, sausage and hints of maple syrup. It was crunchy, soft, spicy and sweet. The perfect combination. The French Toast I tried was delightful. Made with a homemade toasted croissant dipped in batter and topped in fruit. My husband ordered the omelette made with cage-free organic brown eggs. It was fluffy and prepared just as he liked with meat, cheese and veggies of his choice. He also got the potatoes as a side. My daughter got the Parfait which was presented beautifully. It was non fat Greek yogurt layered with organic fruit and granola. It was so big she couldn't even finish it and she's a great eater! We had a lot of us and I got to taste a variety of food during my visits. I posted pictures of the variety of different meals. The restaurant has a disclaimer - "fresh food takes time, please be patient while we prepare your food in a clean and safe manner." I believe the food was worth waiting a little for it to be prepared. We sat for about a half hour, enjoying the atmosphere and enjoying our beverages while they prepared our fresh delicious food for the 10 of us. This is when I also spent some time reading about their history and walking around looking at all the unique art and eclectic decor. Donna added so many sweet touches, one example is a basket of reading glasses that people can borrow if they forgot their own. I thought that was awesome! You order and pay for your food at the counter and they deliver it to you at your seat. Service was excellent and everyone there was kind, happy and polite. They were very helpful and assisted in explaining the different dishes to me when I inquired. While we were there they had live music too! It was perfect. It was acoustic, guitar with cover songs. The volume was great, we could listen to the music, yet still talk and enjoy our conversation. We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience with food of the most exquisite flavors. I highly recommend enjoying a meal at The Freight House Cafe and I will DEFINITELY be back the next time I'm in Mahopac! It's one of my favorite places that I have eaten! I noted it's close proximity to the county bike trail and think it would be a great stop on a bike ride. The coffee was very good. The service is very quick, friendly and helpful. We stopped in for brunch and enjoyed the BLTA sandwich, the avocado toast and the maple syrup flat bread. The food was all fresh and, to put it nicely, looked minimally handled. It needed salt, which I was happy to add myself. The prices are not excessive relative to the variety of the ingredients, however, the bread products are all merely grocery store quality, nothing artisanal or fresh-baked. I had the good fortune of eating lunch at this cafe with 2 friends last Saturday. Tucked away in the corner next to the train tracks, there is ample parking. Seat yourself-different choices of tables/chairs/bar stools. Grab a menu. Read the history of the building-it's interesting-while choosing your meal. Order and pay at the counter. The servers are very friendly and our sandwiches were quickly delivered to our table. I had a Turkey Twister. The bread was super fresh and there was just the right amount of ingredients on the sandwich. It came with a small serving of interesting slaw. My friends shared 2 sandwiches. The B.L.T.A. was just okay, but they raved about the Holy Hummus! We also enjoyed some cocktails-Cosmo, Dirty Martini and Bloody Mary. All were fine. The cafe is busily decorated with lots of memorabilia. My one complaint is that it was very drafty. But I hear that the restroom (which is located outside of the building-don't forget the key!) is toasty warm. We sat and visited. Did not feel rushed at all in fact the waitress told us to take our time. We just had to leave by 3pm when they were closing. I recommend The Freight House Cafe without hesitation. read more

Terrific! Found this right after I moved here and so grateful Amazing Golden Tea (tumeric is awesome for so many things!); veggie wrap and my husband loves their muffins and full breakfasts! Not only do they have great food but they have great drinks! And, poetry, and music! This place is just the highlight of my move to Mahopac. No sooner did I think it couldn't get better than I find out the owner's sister has wonderful healthy syrups - hibiscus; elderberry, etc. Just ask for her card! These keep you healthy! Happened upon this place for brunch on a Saturday. So glad I did! Besides the really fun atmosphere, the staff is just awesome. I had a bunch of questions while ordering and she had tons of really helpful and delicious suggestions. Healthy local food. Farm to table juicing (awesome); I got a grapefruit juice with orange juice ice cubes in it. I'm gluten free, they were totally accommodating. I got an omelet with carmelized onions, mushrooms, peppered bacon, and avocado on the side. Special acknowledgement to Ivanna; she is apparently new but was the woman that helped us make our order. We went on a mini holiday upstate and got hungry on the way up. I used yelp and saw this on the next exit and decided we should try it out. One reason was that it had organic food and to me that's a plus. I had the veggie bowl salad without cheese which was delicious. Also this town is so cute! This restaurant is perfect if you are riding on the bike path. It has outdoor seating and amazing food. I always get the chefs salad and it is great. It is so big I can rarely finish it. It is the high light of my bike ride I just went after they just opened while the Covid 19 crisis is going on. The food is still excellent but what I really admire is how seriously they take clients safety. I was able to sit outside. Phone in my order with tip. They brought it out wearing a mask and gloves in a disposable take out container. I was able to sit at one of the tables that were spaced six feet apart. If you don't want to call in your order only one person is allowed at a time. The owner came out to talk to me to tell me how seriously they were taking the safety of their clients. I totally recommend eating here! The sandwiches are great and they serve excellent coffee and tea. If you enjoy wine and beer, they have it too. The outdoor seating is great. I always found the indoors to remind me a little bit like home, and super cozy. The owner is nice and would allow the county domestic violence center to hold events here, or would hold events where the proceeds would go to them. I had heard about this place from a friend but had never tried it until I went bike riding on the North County Trailway and needed a rest. The Cafe really is right off the trail, but there is a fence that prevents you from walking directly from the path to the cafe. The employees assured me that direct access will soon be constructed, but for now you need to walk around the block to get there. The extra effort is soon rewarded by the fun welcoming atmosphere and the friendly staff (not to mention the bike rack under the tree by the door!). The cafe is quirky and unassuming, with self-serve coffee (pay in the Honesty Box at the end of the counter) and more complex coffee and espresso drinks. There is a limited selection of sandwiches and breakfast is served all day! Weary from by bike riding on a hot summer day I thought I had walked into paradise when I climbed the steps of the Freight House Cafe. This coffee shop was the perfect spot to rest, read a book from their reading corner, play a tune on their piano, or use their free wi-fi. There may be other coffee shops that have such amenities, but not in Mahopac! If you are on the trail, do yourself a favor and go sit on their porch and rest in the shade for a bit. If you just need a latte pick-me-up to get through your afternoon, this is your place too! read more

There are several reasons to visit the Freight House Café. Atmosphere is fun and cozy, and there are many tchotchkes and works of art to keep one's eye interested. On my last visit there I found the guest comment book and enjoyed reading the outpouring of love and compliments from patrons. There are even a few mini-blogs from self styled philosophers...and a couple of creepy pleas to connect on Instagram! I've gone there to hear music and the blues band that was playing on my last visit was good enough (if uneven), not too terribly loud, and pretty enjoyable. They could have put the female singer to work on more material, though. Nobody really wants to hear a bunch of guy instrumentalists sing just to please themselves and to fill out the set list! But I digress. So, why only three stars? I probably wouldn't bother writing a review if I didn't feel there was room for improvement. If I could have given 2.5 stars, that would be more accurate. The place is ok, but it could be much better. Reaching that higher potential could make the difference between being a somewhat charming, funky local joint to being a must-go spot. Let's start with the service so I can get that out of the way. As stated in at least one other review, it's basically self serve. Behind the counter are some friendly, well-meaning faces, but table service was atrocious. As I looked over the menu with the server close by, I asked about a price (not listed for some reason) and was told "$10, I think"! When I gently pressed 'you think?', I was told "I don't know...its around $10." I got some nice guidance on picking a tea to drink, and it was brought in a nice large cup with the fancy triangular teabag. No spoon, no sweetener, no comment. When I finally got the honey and spoon from another server and took a sip, it was pretty awful. (Over-brewed,perhaps?) That wasn't the servers fault, but the response was a little slow as to offering me something else. I asked for water and again, waited a long time. My friend finally went up to the counter and got me a glass. Mind you, the place was not especially crowded! In the end, the tea was still on the bill. Safe to say, a good deal more training is in order. A simple toasted flatbread with mozzarella and balsamic drizzle took 20 minutes, and was mediocre. When looking over the wine menu the list had generic names of the ones available, eg Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet etc. No vineyards were named and no vintages, and yet the price for a glass of Cabernet, for example, was $13!! I could not for the life of me figure out how that was justifiable. Miami Beach or Beverly Hills, maybe. I should probably go back and have coffee and a breakfast meal sometime. Maybe that's really in their wheelhouse and my experience of the place has been lopsided. I never needed to use the restroom. Lucky for me, since it is located outside on the front deck with a separate entrance. Probably not fun in the cold winter weather! That's a design flaw that can't really be addressed without a renovation, I suppose. As a matter fact, that makes me think that a Bar Rescue would probably do the Freight House Café a world of good! I have seen too many places with great potential come and go. I hope they can raise the bar a bit and I wish them the best of luck! read more

First, let's start off with - Mahopac is lucky to have such a One-of-a-kind establishment. When you walk in the doors a cheerful staff and owner herself accommodates customers with an assortment of delicious coffees and unique sandwiches made with FRESH local grown ingredients which also keeps the money spend in the Cafe circulating in the community. Any of the freight house wraps will hit the bull's-eye for you're breakfast or lunch appetite. As for Ms. Massaro, owner she is a accomplished leader, a go getter, down to earth community minded young woman who had brought only goodness to her own community through food and java - while offering a quiet matchless location - to sip a latte or meet with friends for a quick cup of Joe. This place is the absolute best!!! Everything I have ever ordered (food and drink) has been delicious! Donna uses all natural ingredients and you can truly taste it in the food. The coffee is the best in town too, Angel's kiss is my favorite- I DREAM ABOUT IT!! My go to sandwich is bacon, egg and cheese with avocado on a croissant- the best!!! The avocado is mashed up so it's more like a spread and you get a nice amount of avocado in each bite, you really can't beat it. The atmosphere is cozy and comfortable, my friends and I go there and hang out on the couch by the fireplace and drink our coffee and eat. Great little local place serving home-cooked, out of the ordinary food. Coffee is self serve and you order at the counter. When ready, an employee will deliver the food to your table. I hesitate to call them waitresses...runners would be more like it. It is an old freight house furnished with an eclectic blend of this and that so nothing matches, but don't let that stop you.
