This place came highly recommended. We were quite let down. We saw 3 employees during our stay and stood in line for a beer for over 30 minutes. Bartender was moving fast but not efficiently. 2 bars and one bartender at each. It was pretty ridiculous. On a beautiful Saturday afternoon in a covid friendly place (bc it's outside) we really expected to be served sooner. Only stayed for one beer. The mahi mahi tacos are amazing and the hand-cut french fries are fantastic. If you're hungry though, don't opt to share the mahi mahi tacos with a friend because you only get 2 of them and they're small, but delicious. Also get the queso because you get about 8-10 ounces (enough for ~4 people with plenty to spare, and trust me I eat a ton of queso by myself lol) - the queso comes with salsa and guacamole, and the chips are really tasty just by themselves. Great place to bring a group of friends for a low-key evening because of ample outdoor seating and video projector playing whatever game is on. There are two bars and each serves different types of local and craft beers on tap. Love this place! this place is easily one of the best outdoor bars i've ever been to. The beer selection is INCREDIBLE. A huge place with a lot of seating, covered TVs, a huge Projector, and much more. The reason i love this place so much is everything they seem to represent. They are what they are, a place to come with people you care able to enjoy sports and beer. Simple, yet satisfying. Unlike other places i've been to that were similar to this, they aren't trying to over complicate things. Their food is just ok which is probably their biggest downfall. But i wouldn't come here to eat so i'm not letting it affect my review. Oh and the playground... What is going on San Antonio? Why are we introducing Children to something that seems so great without them? I will admit that their playground is on the very front corner so it is very easy to avoid that area and not be effected by children playing. (i still wouldn't bring my daughter here) It just doesn't appeal to me. ensuring my child's safety while trying to enjoy their massive beer selection seems very counterproductive. I have only been here twice while visiting family and both times resulted in a very fun time, there is just something about this place that makes me feel at home. I really dont know how someone could complain about this place. Is it a dirt lot? Yes. Can you see that before you go sit down? Yes. Food: I had the pork bbq sandwich and it was amazing. My wife had the hamburger and it was just as good if not better. The portion sizes were pretty big as well. Our friends had the nachoes, goat cheese dip, and fish tacos. Everyone was really impressed with the quality of the food. Drinks: I had several local brews as did my wife. All of them were at least decent and the bartenders were very knowledgeable and helpful. Just tell them what kind of beer you like and they will make similar suggestions. They also offer free water and tea that you can see in one of the photos I have posted. Overall: the restrooms are kind of trashed and it's in a dirt lot but I have to admit, we had a great time here. Our kids played on the smallish playground while we were able to just spend time with some good friends. I would recommend this place to everyone and we will certainly come back. read more

Terrible, terrible service. I can't believe it took me visiting half a dozen times to realize that it isn't going to change. Well this was the LAST visit. It's really too bad that they can't get it together as this could be a great outdoor patio to chill with a beer. Thankfully, there are plenty of other outdoor patios to grab a cold beer that will value you as a customer and actually have customer service!! Lucky for them, the tourist won't know what horrible service they have so they'll still get their business. And maybe even some locals that will give them more than a few chances to improve (as I did unfortunately). First time going and probably won't be back. A bug fell into my buddies beer and instead of getting him a new one the manager said "your outside buddy I don't know what to tell you. If I replaced everyones drink I wouldn't have a business." Then when we tried closing our tabs and the bartender told us "Yall can go to the end of the line like everybody else, or y'all can leave and we'll close it for you with a 20% tip." Totally not friendly!!! This is not ambient-wise a fail, the place is cool, casual, and laidback. However BEWARE of having fun and NOT making it all about the bartender. The manager TONY who served us first told me directly he was "considering" cutting off my group after my second drink at 9:30pm but made it seem because we weren't interacting with him at all. Instead I was interacting and laughing with my group of 10,, I think he took it personally.. how one person ordering a beer could cut off an entire group, is an overkill, next time i'm in from out of town, the owner should know the manager is NOT accepting of out-of towners. read more

Upon arrival, we went to the back bar where the bartender ignored the line of customers. I think she was talking to the manager or a coworker. We finally walked away and went to the front bar. I'm feelin' pretty darn friendly about the Friendly Spot. It is one of those bars you could pick up and put down in any cool city and it would be packed full of cool folks.With a giant dog and kid friendly courtyard, delicious micheladas, sangria, funky colorful chairs, it's basically the place you go to have "just one drink" with a buddy and end up staying for 12 hours. This is one of those San Antonio bars that gives you the itch to move there. Sure, there are a dime-a-dozen bars opening in Austin but SA is just at the beginning of their hot local spots boom and I'm excited to watch it happen. Though the friendly spot isn't new to the scene by any means, it's one of those places that will always be hip and accessible, comfortable enough for a casual beer with buddies while watching the game but hip enough to bring a your edgy friend. I look forward to hunkering down here on an afternoon when I didn't have a 2 hour drive ahead of me and rubbing elbows with the cool kids in SA. read more

I had to chuckle at some of the other reviewers comments about one of the bartenders. Surly they are exaggerating or the reviewer is being a jerk. Well, I found this bartender and it was no exaggeration. I wouldn't call him names like some other reviewers but he was, to be polite, rough around the edges and startlingly angry. It's ironic at a place with friendly in the name. I avoided him the rest of the evening and had a great time. I live the big screens for a game and love the vibe of the place. You shouldn't feel uncomfortable coming here after a workout, or after a long day of walking in SA, or even slightly dressed up before heading to dinner. It's just a straight up comfortable place for anyone. Yes, I'm speaking for anyone. I'm a cider girl, and they have plenty of options, including one on draft recently that was different than anything I have had. I just wish I could remember the name. The Friendly Spot is located on South Alamo st. in the very hip King William district in San Antonio. This is a very cool spot which claims to be an ice house or at least capitalizes on the kitschiness that comes with that name. Ample outdoor seating and a nice bar with a good selection of beers. Dog owners abound there and for the most part the dogs and their owners are pretty friendly. A recent stop there on Sunday evening had us scrambling for a place to park on the street (scored a good space a block away) and for a spot in the mildly crowded front part of the place ..(again scored a spot!). Acquired a few beers and a plate of vegan nachos. It was altogether a very pleasant start to the evening ...good company, atmosphere and beer....till we collected the nachos! We..ll let me tell you, the Waldorf Astoria has nothing on feeling overly proud about their nachos! These guys take the cake on that one! F'in $10.75 for nachos and we got literally 8 ..yes EIGHT ..ocho ..chips with a schmear of black beans, about a teaspoon of sauteed onions, some Sysco pickled jalapenos and a small scoop of guac. artistically arranged on a Chinet plate! I have eaten some expensive meals in my life, but I think even Morimoto or Thomas Keller would not charge me $1.25 for each nacho...no matter if the beans were grown specially in the Andes and fertilized with rare parrot guano, and transported by specially trained condors and dropped from heights of 10,000 feet to crush them naturally by differentiated gravity! I *love* the Friendly Spot. I live by the Market Square in downtown, and when I first moved here, I walked right on by TFS and down to Blue Star or La Tuna. I've been going back ever since. The beer selection is *incredible*. There are many local, micro, and international brews in bottle and on tap here for reasonable prices. How did I wind up with a headache today? $4.50 Delirium tremens ON TAP that's how! I've never ever ever seen Delirium on tap ANYWHERE, and I've paid much more than $4.50 for a bottle of it. If you haven't had it before, it's a delicious Belgian beer that sports a sexy 8.5 ABV. I was so overwhelmed that, uh, I had to drink like 6 of them. Then have two sangrias. Maybe that's why I don't remember walking home last night... hmm. The staff is super friendly, knows their beer well, and are speedy with their service. There is a front and a back bar, and the bathrooms are remarkably clean for an ice house... or for any other bar for that matter. They have an AMAZING amount of beers.. it would take me forever to try all the ones I want. Their food is also fantastic. I had a grilled cheese and chips and they were really good. So, I used to frequent The Spot when I was living in San Antonio. It was so inviting, so chill, so...for lack of a better word...cool. However, it was the atmosphere that really soured my most recent visit. Back in the day, The Spot had an older crowd. No, not your grandparents old...but, people in their 20s and 30s. Now, the age ranges from newborn baby to early 50s. Yep, that's a legit statement. So, instead of drinking with fellow patrons around your age...you're drinking AND smoking...that's right, smoking...around kiddos. They even installed a playground for parents to drop their kids off at while they partake in the always fun activity of day drinking. So, picture this if you will. You're wanting a drink and a smoke. (Which I did, because I had a fancy pack of Dunhills.) You find a nice spot under a big tree, sip on your first beer, light up your first fancy cig...and as you turn to your right to exhale, you're greeted by a baby in a stroller. Nice, rea nice. Even if you don't smoke, all you hear is crying babies and screaming kids. Who wouldn't want to drink in that atmosphere? Doesn't that sound like fun? Doesn't that sound...dare I say...friendly?
