This is a great date spot in Leonardtown. We actually prefer to come for a late date lunch as it tends to be less crowded. Food is in the good to very good range. I wish execution of items was more consistent. I've seen pictures on here of items we've ordered...the scallop crostini for example, some reviews show nicely seared scallops however when we ordered it the scallops had no sear at all. Service is sometimes hit or miss. They have a decent craft beer selection and they also have a lot of fun cocktails. read more

On Saturday, September 12, my husband, myself and 4yr old daughter drove an hour away from our home to have breakfast at The Front Porch. When we went to enter the restaurant we were greeted by who I thought to be the host. He asked whether we had a reservation and I stated no. The entire place was empty other than a group having a gathering in a private area. Though we did not have a reservation he was going to accommodate us anyway. As we walked to the table to be seated he asked how long were we planning to be there because he have to get us up out of there. Now I get it, a reservation probably was required, however, customer service goes a long way. We decided to leave. I chose not to spend my money where I am not welcomed and/or have to be rushed to dine. It was a unpleasant experience for me. read more

Last weekend, we ventured over to Leonardtown for a 50's Festival which we realized once we got there was actually taking place two days later. Whoops. But, we were there so we figured we might as well eat. We decided to try out The Front Porch. We had gotten drinks at the bar here before, but never tried the food. The location is a remodeled historic home with a beautiful wrap around porch. If the weather is behaving, drinks and food out on the porch makes for a lovely day. This time, since it wasn't the best weather, we ate inside. The interior is cute and kitschy with antiques decorating the walls. My only complaint about the interior of this restaurant is that, as it is I'm sure with most historic buildings, it's a little grimy and seems like it could use a really deep cleaning. The walls right next to our table were a little dirty which isn't entirely appetizing. An aspect I love about this location is that it is a remodeled historic home which means the restaurant is broken up into rooms. It allows for a more intimate setting and helps keep the noise level down on busier days. The room we sat in had a fireplace, large windows, and about 5-6 tables. It would have been really cozy and lovely on a cold winter night and would be perfect to rent out for a bridal shower or any kind of small event. The service was good; really friendly and enthusiastic. I think we got in there right as they were opening because our food came out really slowly. Once the crowd started to get larger, it seemed like people were getting their food quicker than we did so it might have just been that they weren't ready for us when we showed up. The lunch menu is pretty simple and classic with many American favorites. The specials were a little more unique than the rest of the offers and they were seasonal which is something I always really like. I ordered the grilled chicken and avocado sandwich with a side salad that had raspberry vinaigrette on it and Mike ordered the chicken cobb salad without cheese and with honey mustard dressing on it. We both enjoyed our meals and are freakishly excited to have found a local place that makes a good salad. Both of our chicken was cooked perfectly and the sauce on my sandwich was delicious. I loved that my side salad included feta cheese which you don't see very often in American restaurants. As you can see in the picture, Mike's salad was very fresh and all his veggies were nicely chopped and were perfectly ripe. Our only complaint was that neither of us really liked our salad dressings. His was more like a sauce; in fact I'm pretty sure it was the same sauce found on my sandwich. Mine was far too sweet and didn't have enough oil in it. Overall, our meals were very satisfying, fresh, and nicely cooked. I noticed on the lunch menu, that they do lunch boxes to go which, if we lived closer, is something I'd definitely be tempted to do since they have such good salad and sandwich options. We were very excited about this place after seeing Yelp reviews. I'm not sure if they had an off day but food was very "meh". Seared ahi tuna was over cooked, all of our food tasted bland or funky, drinks were overwhelmingly sweet... service & atmosphere was good. Given the price range we expected more. Everything from fried green tomato with wilted spinach toBLT with fried tomato and avocado sandwich, seared tuna by itself or in a wanton or salad, chicken kabobs, I haven't had a bad dish yet. If you don't have a reservation you will likely not get seated and if you do there are COVID restrictions which are frustrating. Wonderful house and the waitress was great, but the meal was so disappointing. The Saint Mary's Mule stole the show. We ordered the sweet chili shrimp appetizer and it came out looking pretty lackluster on a few pieces of chopped romaine lettuce with a creamy sauce. It wasn't what I thought it would be, but it was okay. My husband ordered a special- lamb chops, pasta salad and asparagus. I ordered the chicken and waffles with fried green tomatoes. His lamb was cooked perfectly but was extremely fatty, even for lamb. He said the Pasta salad was really good but the asparagus was undercooked. When I ordered the chicken and waffles, the menu offered a spice with it and I said sure why not. Huge mistake. It looked like they sprinkled the extremely hot spice all over the chicken after they breaded and deep-fried those thighs to death. You could see the spice sprinkled in the crevices of the waffles. It was just way too spicy and way, way, too overcooked. And the waffle was about the driest I've ever had- it may have been ok if they had put a little more of the sriracha sauce, that was quite tasty and wasn't too spicy, but they really skimped on it for some reason. The fried green tomatoes were just ok. Even the deserts we got to-go were disappointing for the price, $7 for key lime pie that was less than an inch high including the crust? Well give it another try, but it just may be a while. read more

I went to a dinner here with some friends (there was 8 of us) and I ordered a filet mingon, medium well with no horseradish on it. The steak came and when I cut in up, it was basically purple it was so raw. I would have classified it as rare. Plus it also had horseradish on it. I cut up the asparagus because I was going to eat that and the potatoes. My husband went to the waitress and asked her to have the steak fixed. When it was brought back, it was THE EXACT SAME steak and asparagus, cut up exactly as I had cut it up. So they basically took the whole plate, threw it on the grill and brought it back. And it was still not cooked medium well. So it was both undercooked and overcooked at the same time. And what about the horseradish that was on it? Did they rinse it off before the put it on the grill? Needless to say I did not eat it. I just ate asparagus and potatoes, for $29. The waitress gave me a free piece of chocolate cake to make up for it, which was also not great. Not our first time here, but we won't be back here, unfortunately. Never had an experience that's worth the price. read more

The Front Porch offers consistently great food and creative cocktails. This is one of the best restaurants in the area. I love their crab dip, salads, and creme brûlée. I've been here at least a dozen times and I've never had a bad meal. When the weather is nice, try to snag a seat outside on the porch. The cute little house the restaurant resides in gives a very home-y vibe, which is comfortable and friendly. The waitress was nice, although she didn't check in with us often so we say with empty drinks and an uncooked steak for a while. The black bean soup is amazing, and they have delicious bread there. The food and service here are both excellent. My husband and I or friends have been eating here once or twice a week for the past 8 months. We have never had a bad meal. We love the daily specials, generous salads, especially the steak tip salad, sweet chili shrimp, crab dip, and fried green tomatoes. Hamburger hump day is delicious on Wed. Tucked away in the county seat of Saint Mary's is Leonardtown's The Front Porch, an 1850s-constructed building, also called The Sterling House. Out front is a sign that says it's a "place to dine and unwind" - music to my ears! A group of us walked in for supper and were warmly greeted by the hostess. Seated upstairs in a room with three other tables, you quickly remember that The Front Porch is a house converted to a restaurant and it's really cool to mill around checking each room. We started with apps: their crab dip and Southern pork and beef spring rolls. I was blown away by their crab dip. It's shareable, and it came with plenty of lightly toasted slices of bread. Their spring rolls were so tasty and delicious, I could've just had that for my meal. My friends had the sirloin strip and me, still having a craving for crab had the Rockfish Hemingway, a pan-seared and blackened rockfish topped with a crab cake. My little seafood plate was so delicious, the plate was clean! Now I'm normally not a dessert fan, but I had their bread pudding. It was the perfect end to my meal. Everything was wonderful!!! From the quality of food, the patient and thoughtful service from Reilly our waitress, and the charming restaurant ambience. The kindness and friendliness of all the staff was above and beyond! It started to rain hard with severe thunderstorms and lightning as we were leaving, and the staff kindly offered us shelter on the outside porch even after the restaurant had already closed. After awhile when the heavy rain did not let up, the manager asked her staff to take my husband to our hotel to get our car. Thank you all at The Front Porch for your kindness!!! read more

Came for Sunday Brunch and found the menu limited. Was told that nothing else could be ordered except the brunch menu items. We came to buy boost St Mary's gift cards and were told they no longer offered them. Funny, the guy who answered the phone the night before, told me they did have them. My wife enjoyed her lunch choice, mine was not that great. Perhaps it's early days after lockdown and I should be less critical?? I hope they get it together soon for your sake.
