As an immersive exhibit showcasing everything Simpsons, this is 5 stars. As a restaurant serving quality food, this is only 1 star. Wait time is very long; just like the rides, you have to wait to be let in to order your food. Choices here are plenty since they combined krusty burger with cletus's chicken shack and the frying dutchman. But what's the point of choices when they all taste awful and overly salted? I suggest you go somewhere else to fuel up rather than throw your money down the trash here. read more

This food area at Universal definitely isn't one of the top options. This particular stand looks like it was better than some of the others, but I think I'd opt for the chicken place next time. Luke warm food, and just okay fish. The Basket of Bait does come with a lot of food though. We did get the Flaming Moe drink, which is cool, but it's really just a $9 orange soda with dry ice trapped inside a custom cup. Wouldn't get it again. Go over to Leaky Cauldron or one of the other quick service places. You might find yourself with both better food and a shorter line. read more

The calamari were room temperature and not very good at all. Calamari is not usually that thick. The only thing that saved the meal were the gator tots. They were perfectly fried and held together very well. Also another note about the calamari and tater tots was that neither was greasy at all, considering that they are deep fried, which was a plus. read more

If you feel like seafood, this is the place for you. It might seem a little scary getting fast food seafood in the food court at a theme park, but it's all deep fried so it's pretty safe. You can have shrimp, calamari, battered fish or clam chowder here. Baskets come with tater tots, hushpuppies and tarter sauce ranging in price from $4 for the soup up to $14 for a combo basket. It's all deep fried but most of it seems fresh and tasty! Not a bad option if you're in the mood. read more

Why this isn't a more popular location inside "Simpsons Land", I won't understand. We went in around 1:30 for lunch one day to see a large line for people waiting for Krustyburgers along with chicken and waffles from Cletus' right next door. But there was only one person in line for the Dutchman. After seeing the prices were pretty reasonable for what you get and the fact that it would only take a few minutes, I figured I would give it a shot. The best deal by far was the calamari so I decided to go with that. It comes as a "platter" with one hush puppy, tartar or cocktail sauce, a lemon and fries on the side for less than $9. I also decided to try the clam chowder just to see if it holds any sort of candle to what we have in New England. Service was quick and I was sitting within two minutes of ordering and paying. The calamari itself was a bit strange as they come in strips and not a typical ring like you'd expect. I don't know why they are shaped like this but I figured I would point this out since some may think they ordered clam strips instead. A bit too chewy and not crispy enough for my tastes and the fries were a tad soggy after sitting below the squid which softened them up by adding more oil The chowder I was very pleasantly surprised by, it was stocked full of big pieces of clams that you could actually see and the broth was the perfect consistency of cream and flour for thickness. Although I didn't get much hint of salt pork or bacon, this could pass at a reasonable price at a place like the 99 Restaurant in our neck of the woods. Frozen fast food clam strips. I had no idea it was like this, it was my first time ordering here. Omg I had to laugh about. It's literally the frozen seafood you buy at the grocery store and fry yourself at home and then go iiicckk! But the Filipino lady taking the orders is so sweet and nice and keeps the inside really clean. That's the reason for the 1 star. read more

I didn't know it was possible to mess up a fish fry, but this place did. The coconut shrimp was very good. The tots were crispy and not greasy. That's the best I can say. The calamari was tough and chewy. I was supposed to get clams in addition, but they were not served to me. The fish was a soggy, oily mess which told me the oil wasn't hot when the fish was fried. The hush puppy, a single hush puppy, was the strangest round ball of cornmeal my mouth has touched. It was disgusting. I walked away with a bonus cupcake which was average. The Buzz Cola was more cherry flavored than cola, but nothing like Cheerwine, for those of you who are familiar with it. It certainly wasn't cola, or Dr. Pepper, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Hmm so food is edible here..but maybe not the place to go. Ordered fish n chips that came with tots and hush puppies. The tots were pretty good (standard, McDonald's hash brown-like). The fish was not super fresh and a bit of a rubbery texture. Nothing surprising for fried cod in an amusement park. One of the fish had a SUPER unappetizing looking burnt piece on its batter (see picture). Also the hush puppies were super pathetic. Even long John silvers has better hush puppies. read more

Most definitely avoid everything at the Flying Dutchman. The battered fish has a horrible synthetic tasting garlic powder batter with tasteless fish, the calamari is rubbery and bland, the coconut shrimp is so over-coated that it tastes like nothing but coconut and flour and the tots we're cold. Very rare that you find a place where literally everything on the menu sucks but this place meets that rare standard! read more

NOTE: This review is really more for Springfield USA's Fast Food Boulevard than just The Frying Dutchman. The Frying Dutchman is located inside Universal Studios Park at the Springfield USA area pavilion. One building houses several fast food joints including Cletus' Chicken Shack, Flaming Moe's, Krusty Burger, Lisa's Teahouse of Horror, and Luigi's Pizza. Considering you're in a theme park, this should be the type of eats one would expect. Catering more to the kids, tweens, and teens, I decided on Chicken Waffle Burger. Also on the menu (from other restaurants) was fish & chips, a turkey leg, and a tuna salad. The decor is like a 50's style diner right in line with the Simpson's theme. There are dining area attendants to keep the area clean and to prevent people from hogging tables while others in their party is lining up for food. Once you have your meal, they will seat you, once you leave, they clean up after you. No tip is required, but I'm sure it would be appreciated. This is actually a great system and definitely increases efficiency in steadily turning over the limited amount of tables they have. Chicken & Waffles (12 bucks). From Cletus' Chicken Shack, this came with a side of Tater Tots. I'm a sucker for tater tots and these are right on par! The waffles looked like they were mass produced, but they were made fresh. With only a leaf lettuce to accompany it, there was not much to the sandwich at all. Mayo and other condiments were self serve. The chicken was made with breast meat and not processed (thank goodness!). It wasn't dry, but it also wasn't exactly juicy either. Then again, Cletus' never claimed to be Chick-fil-A. 2 stars. The Tuna Salad (9 bucks). This was prepackaged and self served from Lisa's Teahouse. It was a Mediterranean style salad which consisted of romaine lettuce, julienne bell peppers, tomatoes, olives, feta cheese, tuna, and dressing. The greens were fresh, so turnover was definitely high. Your typical tuna salad with feta and olives, it was a-ok. 3 stars. The Fish (14 bucks) came with the same tater tots (no complain here). and was ordered from the Frying Dutchman. The fish was cod and the pieces were small. The batter was laid on a little thick, but cooked well none the less. It was much greasier than it should be, which is an indication of how busy they were (constantly cooking drops the temp of the oil. If not hot enough the batter will absorb it). If eaten at a different time, this dish may have been better. 2 stars. The Turkey Leg (15 bucks). This was actually purchased from vendor stall outside of this building. It's a huge turkey leg on the bone. Similar to what you get at ball games, but more on the dryer side. It was extremely salty (probably due to curing), but had plenty of meat. It came with a small bag of potato chips of your choice. 4 stars. Overall, it's really average food all around, but with inflated prices. Nothing was worth what you paid, but then again, you're at Universal Studios, so it's not surprising at all. 2,5 stars rounded up to 3 stars. Ordered the bait basket. Calamari was like rubber and the fish had a funky aftertaste. Will not eat here again. Go somewhere else.
