I would not recommend The Futon Shop. My first purchase was a mattress that caused an allergic reaction. I called immediately to request a return, and my husband brought it back to the store. The employee there had no knowledge of the situation. Instead of receiving a refund, I was only offered a store credit and was told that if I had any issues with finding a replacement bed, they would take care of me until I found the right one. I wasn't comfortable with that arrangement because I wasn't sure they would have a product that would meet our specific needs. When I later tried to use the store credit, I was told it was redeemed the same day it was issued. After I questioned that, I was then told it had expired--but they would honor it anyway. California law prohibits expiration dates on gift cards and store credits, so these conflicting explanations were both confusing and concerning and made me question how my credit was being handled. To avoid any further issues, I decided to use the credit to purchase a wooden bed frame instead of another mattress. I thought this would be a straightforward transaction that wouldn't require a return. Unfortunately, the Tatami bed frame was defective and not as described. The side rails were loose where they joined together, the boards moved up and down instead of fitting tightly like it states on the instructions, the slats were spaced wider than advertised, and the side rails were bowed. After I sent an email with photos, I was eventually told they would send replacement legs under "warranty". With the way the Tatami bed frame is constructed, I expressed concern that replacement parts made separately might not fit properly. There was a great deal of back-and-forth communication between multiple employees, which made the entire process stressful. During this time, the company scheduled deliveries without confirming them with me first, and we were unavailable for those appointments. When we finally arranged a replacement delivery, one of the delivery drivers told me this was a common issue with this particular bed frame. The replacement bed did not fit together, even though the company had assured me they had verified everything before delivery. The company also insisted that they had to install the bed themselves and told me they would not replace the bed unless they were allowed to come into our home to perform the installation. We did not install the bed improperly and were very careful during assembly; we are typically extremely gentle with our belongings and followed all instructions closely. Installation is not required and after receiving so much conflicting information throughout the process, I did not feel comfortable having them work inside my home. My family is also highly sensitive to fragrances, and when the delivery was made, the drivers were wearing very strong cologne, which reinforced my concerns. Throughout this process, I was repeatedly given conflicting information. In the end, the only resolution offered was another store credit. After everything that happened, I have no interest in continuing to do business with this company. We also paid more for the bed frame than the original store credit, leaving us with an even larger remaining credit and no real resolution, which makes the situation even more frustrating. We are also left with two bed frames taking up space in our home for months, with no pickup or removal plan in place. The poor communication, defective products, repeated misinformation, and failure to provide a meaningful resolution made this one of the worst customer service experiences. I expected better from a company that advertises high-quality all-natural products and customer care. read more

When I received my futon there is a section that is underfilled. The dip happens on the end so that when you sit on the folded futon you slide off the end. I flipped and flipped it but it has not worked out. At first the company could not see the issue from my photos. Finally I sent a video and they acknowledged the issue. The company has offered to replace my futon. Hopefully this will happen! The futon is nice--I got a natural cotton one and there was NO outgassing. I also bought some organic cotton sheets which are very soft. I hope this works out overall. read more

My experience with this store was very unfavorable I mainly wanted a firm futon which shouldn't cost an arm and a leg. But the bed I received was very lumpy and cost way too much I later came to realize. When I asked for a non-lumpy futon which was actually firm, I had to pay more PLUS the weight of the mattress could hardly have been heavier. I am a big, muscular guy and moving the futon around for cleaning purposes takes huge effort. I would never trust anyone at this location again nor would I ever recommend it to anyone. read more

We purchased a king coconut firm mattress, top cover, and tatami mats about seven months ago. We wanted a floor bed for cosleeping with our baby. We were concerned about mold developing and talked at length to the sales rep when purchasing. Although we really did love this mattress upon flipping it after six months, mold had accumulated on the bottom of the mattress as well as under the mat between the floor and the mat. we had been feeling depressed and extremely fatigued for about two months prior to that and now after two weeks sleeping on a different mattress in a different room All of our symptoms are gone. Although we consulted extensively with the sales person about our concerns and spent about $2000, the futon shop refuses to allow us to exchange or take any responsibility for the mold. I'm not sure why they would even sell tatami mats and offer floor mattresses if they do not consult accurately around the prevention of mold, which is very very serious for health as we discovered. I am sad to leave this one star review as I really did love the mattress but now we have to toss it as it's nearly impossible to completely get rid of mold spores. We just hope it has not spread to the wood floor. If you are planning on doing a floor bed or using any mattress on just the tatami mats I recommend you do extensive independent research around if the room you were planning to do it, and would be conducive or not or you may end up sick and out thousands of dollars like we did. read more

We originally went to the San Mateo branch and did not like the service there so came here and we are so glad we did before we gave up. Ricky and Raza were so help and went above and beyond assisting us with furnishing our new home. They even served us cold sodas and we were very thankful for that since it was a scorching hot day. They are very knowledgeable about all of the styles makes and models on their showroom floor and next thing ya know we got a couch, mattress, bed frame, tons of pillows and a floor lamp! Just like many of you I purchased from the Futon Shop looking for an all natural bed. We bought the platform frame with tatami and the heart nest mattress. Within a few months of owning the tatami grew mold, which is clearly a consistent issue that The Futon Shop denies is caused by any improper manufacturing or storage. I attempted to make a warranty claim and have been denied and told I am at fault and they have no known issues with their manufacturing or storage. This companies warranty is fraudulent. It was the 4th of July sale at Futon Shop so I finally bought myself a mattress. I was told at purchase that I have 30 days to sleep on it and if I don't like it, I can return and buy something different. What I was not told was it comes damaged. My mattress was delivered yesterday and upon opening, I found a small hole. This morning I reached out to the local store and was told to email a photo, which I did. I quickly received an email back from Warranty Manager, Christopher Bechtol, stating it is a tuft hole that machine made in error and in his experience, it does not affect the longevity of the mattress. Although this might be true, I paid a lot of money and I should not have to accept a hole in my mattress. I responded asking for a new mattress or half my money back if they will not provide me with an unblemished mattress. We shall see what happens. Update, i quickly received a call from Customer Service after posting. Marina was nice and understood my complaints but the owner decided that because I signed for the delivery, I own it. Ironically, every other company does not allow you to open the package without signing nor was I told to cut the plastic and open it before signing. I don't even have a copy of what I signed so I am guessing, this is their out. Open the delivery and inspect prior to signing. Buy with credit card not debit, so you can argue the purchase. Sadly now, I will file a claim at small claims court. UPDATE- on Thursday-a week from when I received original futon and yelped, I have received a new futon. Marina called me again last Friday, where she said she is still going to work on helping me. I have to give her credit, she was very understanding and did want to resolve my concerns. She is not the owner therefore she does not have the autonomy for decisions but she obviously, impacted my complaint; thank you Marina. She said she would get back to me and to give her a chance and without warning, a truck was backing up to my house on Thursday to pickup and provide me with a new mattress. Would I shop here again, no. I am disappointed by business ethics & model of a company that will happily take your money but be, OK, with quality that is less than perfect. Maybe they should have a sample at the store showing why, such a defect is expected and not to be concerned with and maybe I would have not been so concerned. Let me start with four stars. I may bump it up to five once we pick up our futon mattress and cover next week. Our shopping experience went well, although I am glad I had done some research before I came to the Futon Shop. Helps to have some knowledge of the pros/cons of the different materials before you start shopping. Springs? Cotton? Wool? Etc. The Futon Shop has a reasonable ranges of prices. I did not want to spend a lot and was not at all interested in something that would last 15 to 20 years. I doubt if the frame will last that long ... One thing that seemed odd to me was that Frankie, our sales person, did not mention discounts. That is certainly an enticement for many people. He told us the prices and then when the receipt came it first showed the original price and then the discounted price which had been quoted all along. We were looking for a new futon mattress to replace a very old one that no longer had any "life" left in it. We use our futon mostly as a couch, rarely, if ever, for sleeping. So that was key for me. We tried sitting on several different futon mattresses and found the one that felt and looked best to us. I was pleased with the many options on covers. The one I ultimately picked was on display in two different colors on floor models. That was helpful to get an overall view of how it would look. Often hard to tell from a small swatch. Finally an "observation" more than a complaint. The desk area where our order was finalized was small and a bit disorganized. The very out-of-date printer was very noisy and needed a new ribbon (yes, ribbon!). We could hardly read the receipt as it was so faint. read more

Many promises about how it will be at the store the following day by 10 am. The problem is that some of us work for a living and can't simply re-arrange our schedules because they can't get their act together. I won't go into the details of dealing with an immature 20 year old store clerk who has no authority or maturity. In the end we got through to the management who had authority and got them to deliver it to the house for free where my B-in-L and son were waiting. They make these custom and local in SF using organic material - wool (the one I got) I have hands that chronically fall asleep, painfully sleep like needles. My mom convinced me to get a better bed and its insane what a difference it is. I highly recommend this place and its products. I no longer wake up every 2 hours crying (intense I know). With the pinched nerves in my neck having this mattress along with a "sleep for success" pillow my quality of sleep, and honestly life is so much better. I went in today a bit skeptical on what I was going to encounter. I have been looking for something Non Toxic for our Office that I could feel comfortable having guests sleep on as well as feel ok with our next baby sleeping in that room. We have gone back and forth to order on Wayfair, Costco and we just couldn't feel right about the hidden chemicals and petroleum deep inside the product. We don't have a ton of money to spend either but understand long term this is the RIGHT decision we can go to sleep at night knowing its the cleanest we could find. Anyway, I went in and Rudy helped me and my little girl and he was super patient with me and walked me through all the options. I ended up leaving with a Futon Mattress, a crib mattress, two Organic cotton covers and a frame and I didn't feel like I just went to the cleaners. Thanks Rudy! Absolutely horrible customer service. Actually, make that NO customer service. My Partner and I went into the store today (a Saturday) to shop for Shoji screens. As soon as we walked in, we felt un-welcome as the employee (manager?) was off in the corner, with his arms folded, scowling at us like we had committed a crime just by walking in. He did not greet us, say hello, or once approach us to ask if we needed any help. Let me also mention that we parked in one of the parking spaces labeled "The Futon Shop" right behind the store. We didn't hesitate or think twice about parking there since we were going into the store as CUSTOMERS. Since we didn't find any shoji screens that we liked, we left the store and decided to walk over to Target to grab something. When we came back, there was a note on our car saying the parking was for customers only and that our car would be towed next time. I figured that the manager didn't realize that we were the same customers who were in the store and that he probably just made a mistake. Not so. When I went into the store with the note, he confirmed that he was the one who put it on the car. I explained to him that we were customers and that we were just in there shopping. He said he knew and then went on to say that the parking spaces behind the store were "reserved for deliveries". Of course, if it said the parking was only for deliveries, we would not have parked there. So, then I apologized for parking there, but pointed out that there was no sign indicating the spaces were for deliveries only, at which time he sarcastically and rudely replied "why don't I go out and get a stencil so that I can write that on there for you". He was extremely rude and condescending. When I told him that I was not going to be returning as a customer, he replied "good". This is one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. I will never patronize this Futon Shop nor any of the other Futon Shops because of this horrible customer service experience and will encourage others to stay away and spend their money elsewhere. read more

Ultra bad customer service experience!!! Let's start with the good. Bert, the main sales person seems like a good guy. That's about it for good stuff. I was told if I picked out a futon cover from the stock available in the store - 50% off. Sounded good, so I picked one. i was told it was a good (expensive) choice. At 50% off, it was still about $175 for a double size cover. Didn't feel like a great deal I brought it home to put on my son's new futon and frame (which were as advertised and pretty nice). Opps, it wasn't new :-) It had several stains and marks on the inside of the cover - not visible, but still pretty nasty given one was a long brown streak if you get my drift. Now the plot thickens... I made a crucial mistake by ordering living room furniture - coffee table, end table and sofa table form a futon shop. They were on display and I liked them and price was quite reasonable. Well, I waited 4 + weeks to find out the Owner was too cheap to get furniture picked up until it was convenient for the Owner, not me. It turns out the pick up location for the furniture was Modesto. The Owner obviously didn't want to make the trip until more orders were placed. NONE of this was explained to me until I finally got Bert to admit it. I was P*SSED!!!!!!!!!!!!! I received several deceptive (okay lies) reasons for why the furniture was not picked up. I told Bert I had an upcoming housewarming party and I needed the furniture. Instead of coming clean on the real reason, I was fed lines of BS. Decent selection of futons and frames at "big discounts" that result in still relatively high prices compared to buying a bed. VERY questionable tactics on my furniture delivery (and maybe others). Oh, did I mention that they didn't want to let me return the stained, used cover for credit instead of exchange. I went in, because I knew what I wanted and knew what I was going to walk away with, at around the price I expected. I definitely felt high pressure sales, and I don't react well to it. In fact, if I didn't arrive with a plan to purchase something that day, I probably would have walked out. Regardless, I got a great futon that is a perfect complement to my guest room. This review is a compilation based on my experience online as well as in this particular store. Hopefully it will help others who attempt to order online with in-store pickup. So yeah, I wanted to buy a new futon cover. I had my heart set on a color that appears to be very difficult to obtain. My first choice was a large online site that has VERY good prices and starts with the words overstock. They were out of my color. Thus, google images showed me that The Futon Shop had the color I wanted. I went through the online ordering process and paid with Paypal. I am a cheapskate when it comes to shipping, especially when it's quoted at $25. If I have to pay sales tax as well, I will do everything in my power to not pay the higher of the two fees. Thus, I opted to have the futon cover shipped to the store geographically located closest to me: Pleasant Hill. Then I waited. And I waited. The Futon Shop has one of the crappiest online interfaces EVER. Every other site I've ordered from gives you an order confirmation, estimated shipping, and contacts you periodically to let you know about your order. YOU CAN NOT CHECK ON YOUR ORDER ONLINE. You have to call customer service. Huh? Is this 2001? When I ended up calling customer service about my order, they told me to contact the store itself. Which I did. When I reached the store I had a very "duh" experience with whomever called. Now, it's not the nice guy Perry, but some other kid who clearly wasn't all that bright. I have a thing for people who sound stupid on the phone, sorry. It drives me up a wall. He couldn't seem to find out what the story was with my cover. When he finally did he was vague about when it would be arriving at their store. Once again I shouldn't have to follow up like this. I should be having automated information sent to me regarding delays in my order's shipment. Maybe I was being penalized for having it sent to the store? When I ended up talking to Perry, he conveyed that my cover was delayed "due to the amount of fabric." What the hell? Is lime green the new black? You people deal in FUTON MEASUREMENTS. It's not like I have a California King size futon. I have a full-sized mattress. My faith in this operation really started to tank after this bit of information was shared. Despite my best efforts to order the cover well before I was supposed to go out of the country, it didn't arrive until after I left 5/10. Mind you I placed this order on 4/4. I guess there are two times in this world: real time and The Futon Shop time... I get back from my trip and have a bunch of stuff to do. The store was good about following up to let me know my item had FINALLY arrived and when was I going to pick it up. I contacted them at my leisure (I figured it was my turn to drag my feet), and was told I owed money when I picked it up. Once again, what the hell???? Luckily I am impeccable about my paper trail. I politely informed them that no, the item was paid in full and I had my order number and Paypal data to back this up. Today I FINALLY went to pick up the ill-fated cover. Did I call ahead? No. I didn't think it was necessary. I arrived at 1:30 and the sign on the door said BE BACK AT 2 pm. Ok, I've worked retail and I know what it's like to be short-handed, but this was like the end of a very bad nightmare. I had another appointment at 2:30 in Albany. I felt that I would definitely be late if I waited for them to return, but I didn't have any choice...Luckily the lamp store across the lot had AC and I could chill out in there while I waited. I made sure to watch the front door of the shop while I waited and someone returned at 1:45. PHEW! Crisis averted. I scurried over and grabbed my cover. The entire process took about 60 seconds, but as you can see, the lead up was not very enjoyable. I think this Perry guy does his best. They probably have him completely overworked and underpaid. It's not his fault that the company's site is behind the times and leaves him with fires to put out. I don't know what it's like to deal with him for a store transaction, but sadly I will never find out. In September 2012, I bought a sofa bed and a drawer to go underneath from The Futon Shop in Pleasant Hill, California for $1,454.70. The drawer, itself, was $200-something - can't remember exactly. It never arrived, but when I talked to the saleman about it, he said it wouldn't have fit, anyway. OK, so then I asked for a refund, but he showed me a paper I had signed that stated No Refunds for any reason, only store credit. However, there wasn't anything more I wanted or needed from a futon store. Policy was policy, though, and it didn't matter that I never received the drawer. Recently, now 14 months later, the wooden frame on the sofa bed broke. I followed the Limited Warranty instructions and contacted The Futon Shop about that. A very nice lady named Chris agreed to have that part of the frame replaced for a $65 delivery and installment fee, but waived that fee when she heard my story about the drawer. Now, a day or two later, after talking to several friends, I've decided the $65 doesn't make up for the missing $200+ for the drawer that never arrived, the drawer that wouldn't have fit if it HAD arrived. Moral of the story: Don't order anything from this store that you aren't 100 percent sure you'll get, because you won't get your money back if it never arrives. read more

He then politely asked if there was anything he could help me with. I was grateful for the call because the day before my toddler barfed all over our 15 year old futon mattress purchased at their old Pleasant Hill location. I was hoping to get cleaning instructions...this thing was covered in barf. He went out of his way to call the "home office" in San Francisco to see if they had any suggestions. Unfortunately, even after trying to cleaning methods, the futon was still pretty icky! Fortunately for us they were having a 35% off mattress sale for the holidays. My husband went into the shop, told Perry about our experience with our old futon and our needs for a new one. He immediately recognized our two stories about the barfing kid and was very nice in extending additional discounts to us (as discussed over the phone). We decided to forgo the $70 delivery fee and the $60 take-away fee. We'll save the $130 to pick it up ourselves and dump the old mattress at the landfill. My husband was in and out of the shop in a jiffy...mostly because we were already familiar with the type of futon we wanted to purchase and because of our ability to quickly research the mattress on their website prior to going into the store. Perry was very friendly and and a straight forward salesman. We obviously recommend this shop...we purchased our original mattress and frame 15 years ago and both of our parents have since purchased mattresses and frames for their homes as well. I can't wait to try out our new mattress...although I think I'll miss the "homey/familiar" feeling of our old mattress. Ps. The best part is that these things are made in the USA...right in San Francisco. Our mattress is being made as we speak and we get to pick it up in two days. Can't beat that. Pps. I also used their chat feature on The Futon Shop's website and it connected me directly to the Pleasant Hill store and guess what? I got to talk directly to Perry. What complete care! Went to the Futon Shop to get a replacement mattress - was greeted by George, who was extremely helpful in describing the different types of mattresses that might be suitable for my purposes. George also set up my purchase with the best discounts available and was great about helping me determine the easiest (i.e. Least stress on me) way to get the new mattress to my house and the old mattress out the door. Just bought our second futon here. Great shop and most comfortable futon to sleep on. Can customize to fit any location and the furniture looks great when not down. Way, way more comfortable than a sofa bed. George is the man! read more

I would love to give this store 5-stars, as I had a great experience from start to finish with the store itself, the whole buying process, and the products, but I have to take off one star because of my experience with the San Francisco employee who delivered my futon, etc., who was awful (more about that later). But, onto the great stuff, as there is so many wonderful things to say! George, the person who helped me pick out a whole new bed set--from a mattress to pillows, to sheets, to pillow cases and duvet--was patient and funny and very knowledgeable about their entire product line including helpful benefit/cost analysis. And on top of all that there was a super-sale going on at the time and he offered me an *amazingly* good deal on everything. I had wanted to buy organic and healthy bedding, sourced and made locally for years, but every time I went online I couldn't find anything that I could afford and I could never find pretty organic sheets, only white and off-white. But the sale, and then George's added discounts, kept me within my tight budget and with the best quality mattress, pillows, and the most beautiful, custom-made organic patterned sheets I could want. Beautiful!! I left the store feeling like George had worked really hard to get me a great deal on something that would give me years of happiness and good health. And then with my busy schedule and complicated custom order I had to have multiple phone calls with Cesar and Joe, other employees, who were all nice and patient and helpful. So I very much recommend this store and their products! But now the whomp! whomp! of the delivery experience. The man who came to my house was 30 minutes late, past the delivery window, which meant that I was late for a conference call to serve my own clients. And rather than complain or be strident with the driver, as Bay Area traffic can wreak havoc with precision timing, I decided to just be helpful instead to speed things up so I could get back to work. So I took things from the truck and brought them into my house, and went through things, and otherwise lent a helping hand. And he was shockingly rude to me. Like super-rude. He said, "Lady, you need to calm down! I know how to do my job. Stop. Stand back. I know how to do my job. You need to be calm." And you have to know me, but really I just stared at him and said clearly and slowly, "You are late. I am helping. I know you are great at your job and I'm grateful. I am only helping you because you are late." He was mollified for a few moments probably feeling a bit stupid (I was calm, he was the one freaking out) but things never got better. I told him he needed to take the old mattress away, he said no, he demanded my receipt, he made tons of phone calls, and threatened to leave all my old mattress and bedding behind. He kept leaving my house to talk on the phone not being clear about if he was leaving or not. And when George, the world's best Futon Shop employee finally told him, "Take her old stuff." He took it and never looked back or apologized. He just walked off and left. And a small aside: the world's rudest delivery driver had left behind another customer's item, and when I spotted it I ran their truck down to give it back and the driver didn't even stop to say thank you. So definitely go to this store to deal with well-trained, knowledgeable people selling a great product. But maybe pick the stuff up yourself! :-) read more

Now since I'm in the frame of mind, let's get started. From the moment I walked in that store, it was like pulling teeth to spend my money and get customer service. If I wasn't in a bind, I would have walked out. Let's start with Frank or Frankie. You'd thought he was in the store alone after I walked in. I had to basically make him speak. I've never seen a sales man that didn't sale or didn't know anything about the things he was selling. I told him from gate, the futon I wanted, and that I was gonna put $200 down and pay the remainder when I cam to pick it up the following week. I had him assure me that the futon would be in the store two days before I rented the truck bc I was moving and wanted to do everything on that day. He does the order up, I hand him the money and then he proceeds to sit, and look at me like I couldn't count. So I stare back like what?? He still sits there until I say WHAT?? He like this is only $200. I said I know and I repeated what I said when I walked in. I mean it was only me and him in there. I'm like are you high?? I also asked him for samples of finishing from their cabinet beds since they sold their floor model. I needed to make sure it matched my decor before I placed the order. Fast forward to puck up day, where I meet George. I kid you not, I felt like parents left their teenage boys in charge of the family business for the day. All I could and still do is SMH! So they bring out this box. I'm like umm why is it in a box and not put together? George assured me that it was easy to put together and that a 15 year old could do,it's only two boxes. FINE. Chillllllld I get home, and this thing came with no instructions. I tried to look on the site, even Serta's site since they're the makers or something like that. Long story short, I was upset, tired from moving and IRRITATED! Called the next morning and talked to George and umm this boy, I had to get off the phone with him. He didn't have instructions, didn't know where to find instructions, kept telling me it was easy to do and he can come and do it but he'll have to charge me a fee. BOY if you don't get out of here with all that......I told him I'll bring it back, and he replied I'm not trying to make you madder but we don't do refunds. I politely told him, listen, let me get off the phone with you before I say something we both will not like. About two hours later Matthew from the Futon Shop in SAN DIEGO called me and verbally guided me with instructions on how to put it together. He started his sentence off with " It's really easy" and I stopped him and gave him the business. I said stop telling me it's easy when there's no instructions. IF IT WAS THIS EASY WHY NO ONE KNOWS HOW TO DO IT. Needless to say they money I was gonna drop on the cabinet bed, I didn't. Wouldn't spend another red cent here.
