Went to the Gate House for Valentine's Day. Great meal. I am usually a steak and potatoes guy but went for the winter squash and mascarpone ravioli. It was a great choice and very shareable. We were there tonight with a small group. One of the worst dining experiences I have had in a long time. Between the loud cramped atmosphere and the food, awful. It's pretty hard to mess up a salad, but they managed to, the chicken was overcooked for one and the salad soggy and just bad. I tried some of the other meals and they were equally bad. Even the pizza was a mess. Third time I've been there (not by my choice) and each time has been less than even mediocre. Brunch!! Yes please! I haven't been to the Gate House since it moved locations. I love the new location. There are multiple menus and we had to ask for the brunch menu. Once received everything on it looked fabulous! I had the crepes. I was a bit surprised that the crepe portion was so small, but they were yummy! Came with eggs and potatoes also. After many years, I finally returned to The Gate House. Like before, food is not mind-blowingly great, but the portions are generous and food is predictably good. A good place to bring out-of-towners with children. Seating is usually plentiful and spacious. Reservations can also be made in advance. My go-to is the Wegman burger consisting of lamb with a greek yogurt sauce and feta cheese. They also have a nice little patio for the warmer months. read more

A bunch of girlfriends and I were at the Rochester Market Place and decided to go for lunch. This place was perfect. Some of us even walked there. Gotta get those steps in anyway! It was about a 30 minute wait at around 12:30 on a Sunday which wasn't bad. We waited in the bar. Once our table was ready we were seated and our sever took care of everyone beautifully. The Gate House is in a great location, there is ample parking, and I love the building it is in. It is a mixed use building containing restaurants and stores, and space where art is abundant. I have been to The Gate House before seeing a show at the theatre around the corner and enjoyed my experience. I am a big fan of the ambiance and the various food offered. On this particular experience, my friend and I were being tourists around Rochester and stopped in here to split an app and get a drink before continuing to see other sites around town. We decided to saddle up at the bar and chill out. The bar area has a great set up, and there was another couple at the bar as well. I went with a Bloody Mary, which I didn't know would be made with horseradish instead of hot sauce, and I wasn't given an option as to which I would prefer. I do not like horseradish. It was ok, but not my favorite bloody. It contained a piece of bacon. The bacon was good and crispy. My friend had a beer. Jess and I decided to split The Xerox pizza, which are all creatively named to reflect Rochester, which had mozzarella, crispy chicken, ricotta, arugula, lemon and bacon on it. Immediately I could see that the pizza could have been in a little longer. Although, I really liked the chicken on it and the entire combination, I would have preferred that the ricotta wasn't included on the pizza. It was also exceptionally salty with the cheese and bacon on it. Drink lots of water. It was a lot for two people to split, and we ended up taking 2 slices home with us. I'm in Rochester for a bit on the Wiz national tour and decided to give this place a try. Unfortunately, the food was quite bland. I ordered the salmon with mashed potatoes and asparagus, but the salmon lacked seasoning and just had some Thai chili sauce dumped on top. I'd rate this place a 3. It took 45 minutes to get my meal, and I was hoping for something closer to what I cook at home, but it definitely didn't meet my expectations. Thrilled to write this review update 4 years later! Gate House is fantastic. There's been change in serve staff and all of the issues in my first review have not continued to occur. They have taken extra special care and consideration during COVID-19. Given the lowering of infection rates, my partner and I decided that Valentine's Day brunch would be a good opportunity to dip our toe back into the water of indoor dining. We had initially planned to head to Brown Hound and I am SO GLAD a misunderstanding there brought us here. The experience was flawless top to bottom. Tables are TRULY spaced out here, and the staff is fantastic. Our server forgot to put in our order (not a big deal at all, we weren't in a rush) and then let us know and covered our drinks. SUCH an unnecessary thing (anytime but ESPECIALLY now) but so, so appreciated that our server was up front with us. My crab cake benedict was next level and left me full for the entire day. Blackberry aperol spritz?! YES please. I can't say enough good things about Gate House and the experience we had this weekend. We plan to mostly continue take out, and will be supporting Gate House as regularly as we can. Can't wait until the weather is such that we can enjoy their fantastic patio! read more

I ordered the Wease burger with sweet potato fries (which I was told was their claim to fame), and it was just okay. Came here for our Thursday date night with our little guy. The place looking busy and we were expecting a wait. We got it right away and we're seated inside as it rained earlier and out door dining wasn't a good idea in my opinion. The place was very loud and It was hard to hear the waitress and hostess sometimes. That's probably my ol blue collar ears anyway. We didn't mind because we had our little guy and if he was loud who cares. Everyone else was. We were very hungry and ordered a salad to share and they brought out a grilled cheese with fries for the little one. The fries had hardly any salt on them which I really appreciate that as my fries were loaded with salt. His grilled cheese came out so fast I couldn't believe it. Like as soon as we said he would like a grilled cheese they had it cooking. As for the salad it came with bread sticks filled with cheese which were to die for. The salad it's self didn't really have any flavor. Side note we took the salad home I didn't think it was going to be good but three days later it was still good. As when we put it in the box. I ordered the Douglass. Which was really good. Lacking some flavor but the meat hot was really good. Anyway wife got a p.b milk shake she said was good and it was very plentiful. We will be back to try the pizzas that looked amazing coming off the oven! And maybe a trash plate. We spent $95 with tip on a casual Thursday night dinner with one drink each. Yikes. I was so annoyed having to wait 30 minutes for a table when there were clearly empty tables in the front. It seems like anyone who walks in, regardless of time is told 20-30 minute wait. Well, once we sat down and ate we let the wait time become a non issue. Service was great, our waitress was very attentive. Food was amazing! RECIPE CHANGE! I had found my two favorite entrees at Gate House: the veggie gate plate and the quesadillas. As for the quesadillas, Gate House has never disappointed. Always served hot, flavorful, and I make sure to ask for some fresh spinach to be thrown in the quesadilla for an extra razzle dazzle :) On the other hand, Veggie Gate plate was my "filling" meal. Not any longer. The recipe has definitely changed! 1) there are green and black olives within the pasta salad AND the burger. The juice from the olives saturate the meal, giving it a taste that's definitely not for the people who despise olives - myself. 2) The fries were not hot at all. 3) you aren't served as much meat sauce as before. How it was my first time here last week I do not know but I can tell you that I will be back! I booked an early dinner for my husbands birthday and we had a party of 7. Our waitress told us that they are definitely known for the burgers and once she described the most popular burger being The Wease - 5/7 of us ordered it! It had fontina cheese, bacon jam, an onion ring and lettuce and tomato on it. We were sold! We also ordered a platter of chicken nachos to share between us which was nice start. Once our burgers arrived we were all in heaven. One of our friends said it was the best burger he's had in Rochester. It was juicy and so flavorful with the sweet bacon jam. I loved the plain fries that came with mine because they are the string kind which are my favorite! We all enjoyed our meals so much that we all also ordered dessert. Do yourself and favor and don't skip it! I had the chocolate molten lava cake with vanilla ice cream and it was so decadent. I ate the whole thing with no regrets! A trip to my hometown recently included brunch at the Gate House. I have many fond memories of going to the village gate as a kid and checking out the artwork and eateries, so coming back with my own kiddos tugs at my nostalgic heart strings. I have been to the GH a couple times but it was several years ago so it's been a minute. The ambiance is modern and unpretentious, the bathrooms are clean and semi open kitchen adds to a cozy atmosphere. The waitress waiting on our table was clearly a professional and took good care of our party. The downfall for me was the food. The chilaquiles I ordered had barely any salsa on it, the queso tasted like plastic jarred cheese product and the tortillas were incredibly oily. I had a bite of my husband's burger and it was dry and under seasoned. The fries were the only highlight for me. The pizzas that were coming out the kitchen looked so much better than what I ordered. Went about two weeks ago for dinner and sat outside. It was a bit loud, even though we were on a private patio area and not adjacent to a major road/parking lot, but I didn't mind. We ordered fresh lemonade and it was excellent. I had the Hoffman (a chorizo burger) and it was genuinely one of the best burgers I've ever had. Garlic rosemary fries were wonderfully seasoned, though I wish they were a tad crispier and less floppy. I would order it again if I wasn't so curious about the rest of the menu! I didn't get to order dessert as we had tickets to a performance that night, but their dessert menu looked quite enticing as well. What a great spot for date night. I love the rustic, repurposed wood decor with soft lighting that includes iron chandeliers and mixed Edison bulb lighting. There are lots of nods to local ROC celebrities and historical figures alike. I had the Wegman burger which is a lamb burger cooked to perfection. My wife and I returned to the Gate House for the first time in seven years. I changed my rating to three stars (up from the previous two stars), but I'm still not impressed with the food. Pros: Decent number of vegan entrées; options for non-alcoholic fancy cocktails; our bartender/waitress was great; bathrooms are luxurious. Cons: Food could be better. I had the Gate House plate (vegan "garbage plate") with veggie burger patty, pasta salad, and French fries. The burger patty was covered with vegan meat sauce, which was a bit slimy and not very good. The house-made burger patty had a mushy, unappetizing texture. The French fries were cut very thin and got cold immediately. The pasta salad was dry. Overall, the whole entrée was disappointing. My wife had the G. Eastman burger, where the "burger" was actually grilled avocado slices. She liked it more than I liked my meal. Before the meal started, I had the cherry blossom non-alcoholic cocktail. It was very tasty and unusual (in a good way). It's rare that you find a restaurant offering fancy NA cocktails, so Gate House gets props for that. We didn't have a reservation, so we ate at the bar. Our bartender/waitress was named "Annah" (based on the receipt from our meal). She was great. She was attentive to us while she was very busy making lots of fancy drinks for other diners. She worked fast. It was fun watching her mix the cocktails. The men's room was quite nice -- clean and spacious, with an attractive painting on the wall (it was the Rochester skyline). One other note: I was disappointed that the vegan options were not grouped together on the printed menu, contrary to what someone had reported on a Facebook post. Maybe our menu was missing that page. The options were still listed on the menu but scattered among the rest of the listings. After this latest visit, I felt that there were sufficient positives to raise my previous rating by one star, especially since the menu features other vegan options that I haven't tried yet. My parting advice is this: Don't get the vegan Gate House plate -- order something else. read more
