Chicken and Noodle soup @ Gateway Diner

Gateway is one of those diners I do not frequent often. I just told my waitress Felicity, that I recall coming here 8 years ago. The menu is gigantic. The food is decent, but not 'hand made'. This is a typical Greek diner fix. Hostess, as has been said, is hanging back-counter, laughing excessively and waved diners off with her hand. The service from my view is always great, just cleared the table! Particularly the wraps, Chicken Parm, BLTs and desserts are excellent here. Sides more or less suck and are not worth much. Nice inside: sit at comfy and very spacious booths. Kitchen is slow. Waitress polite. Rebel review: 4

There is something special about an old school diner that makes me feel all warm and happy. Today was our first time at Gateway and I definitely got that feeling. As soon as we entered we were greeted by a lovely hostess and were seated promptly. The place is massive with probably one of the biggest parking lots I've seen for a diner. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly and made sure we were satisfied with our meals. We got there late morning so I still opted for breakfast and my husband got a salad. Both of us were happy with our choices and there is no way anyone would complain about the portion sizes. The prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is lively. Definitely a good option if you happen to be driving down Central Avenue and need to nosh.

Friend and I visited the diner for a quick lunch after doing some shopping. Friends burger (she said) was delicious. My wrap on the other hand was just ok. She had fries which she said were great. I did not opt for them. No pickles accompanied either dish. Bummer. Wrap just did not feature the buffalo sauce or blue cheese dressing on fried chicken. Chicken did appear to have some savory flavor, but buffalo was not apparent. Blue cheese was spotty. Have had better at other places. May be the chef was having an off day.

After a long day of ice fishing on Lake George, Lucy and I were in need of comfort food. What better place than the Gateway Diner. Although we got "skunked" on the ice, that was not on the menu (good thing or she might have forced me to eat some). Anyway, we both opted for turkey dinners, w soup, drink, and dessert. Comes with stuffing, cranberry sauce and choice of potato or daily vegetable. The turkey and fries were both smothered in delicious gravy, the soup (lentil for Lucy, chicken pastene for me) were both excellent, and the rice pudding was delicious. I've been to many diners in the tri-city area and, IMHO, the Gateway Diner's turkey dinner is the best of the best. Generous portions, good quality, and reasonable. About the only thing missing was a cherry on top of the whipped cream on top of the rice pudding (and I'm sure that I could've gotten one if I asked). Lucy and I both agreed 5 star.

Every course was exceptional. The crab cake was outstanding, the pasta was cooked perfectly, and, as my wife said, it was the best blondie dessert she's ever had. The service was warm, attentive, and professional from start to finish. The cocktails were also outstanding--easily on par with some of the best we've enjoyed in major cities across the country. This restaurant exceeded our expectations in every way. It's clear the team takes pride in every detail, from the food and drinks to the hospitality. My wife and I will absolutely be back. As I waited for the hostess she was clearly overwhelmed and couldn't eek out a smile to any of the people she greeted. In the lively restaurant, a few tables of girls-night out, birthday dinners, couples both young & old, bar seating with the World Cup on TV. Our server was very pleasant. The food was good, by Albany standards, heavy on the butter, salt and cream. It wasn't bad but for me they could pull back on the richness and let the herbs/mushrooms/fish/etc shine through. 2 out of the 3 us intentionally only ate half our portions, planning to eat the rest "tomorrow" and told the server we wanted to box them togo. She offered to do that for us, while we were happily chatting, sipping the rest of our wine. When the boxes didn't reappear, the server apologized that someone threw the boxes away. It was disappointing, especially when we paid $25-28 dollars for our plates of pasta. Based on the overworked hostess and server, management needs to adjust their staffing to insure a better customer experience. When they toss out leftovers, not just a single bite, but huge plate of food, it would seem appropriate to provide a "peace offering" perhaps put a small dessert togo or certificate for a free appetizer on a future visit. If I was local I'd probably return.

Admittedly I'm a bit delayed in writing this review so some of what I tried was seasonal dependent as I got a hot apple cider for a drink. To eat, I got a crepe and side of sausage! Just a few short minutes later, the food was ready to go. Everything was really delicious. The sausage provided a perfect savory balance for the sweet crepe that I got. The restaurant was really spacious and had lots of natural light which provided a lovely ambiance. Despite growing up in upstate NY, getting to sit at Skinny Pancake felt like a nice, peaceful perspective I hadn't received before. The food being delicious was the cherry on top. I highly recommend!

It wasn't busy so we were able to go right in and be seated. The server gave us a warm greeting as we entered and asked if we had been there before. She explained the online ordering or that we could walk up to the counter and place our order. The brewed drip coffee is bottomless and self service. They offer lattes and and espresso drinks as well. We placed our order and the server delivered it to our table. We tried "The Vegan" which is a buckwheat batter crepe stuffed with seitan, vegan pesto, vegan cheese, spinach, roasted squash, and caramelized onions. We shared an order of crispy and perfectly seasoned homefries. I ordered a sweet crepe from the special menu which was a buckwheat crepe filled with a blueberry compote, semisweet chocolate morsels, and toasted coconut with candied pecans. It was so rich but so good. We loved the atmosphere, the friendly staff, and the numerous plant-based options and ability to convert several menu items into vegan dishes. We will definitely be back and since we have told so many friends about our experience, will will not be coming back alone!

This was my second time here--my first visit was dining in with friends, and this time I ordered takeout. Both experiences were consistently impressive. Known for its Ethiopian dishes and outstanding vegan cuisine, Umana Yana brings African culture to life through its vibrant décor, flavorful food, and thoughtfully crafted drinks. Every detail reflects passion and authenticity. It's no surprise that actress Tabitha Brown made a stop in Albany to experience the restaurant's highly praised vegan offerings. That's a testament to the reputation they've built. For my meal, I ordered the jerk lamb lollipops, jollof rice, and slaw. The lamb was tender, juicy, and packed with just the right amount of jerk seasoning. The jollof rice was rich, well-seasoned, and full of flavor, while the slaw added a fresh, crisp balance to the meal. On my previous visit, I tried the wings and waffles, and they were equally delicious. Two visits, two different meals, and not a single disappointment. Whether you're a longtime fan of African cuisine or looking to try something new, Umana Yana offers an experience that's just as memorable as the food itself. If you don't know, now you know.
