The atmosphere here was honestly a 10/10, live music on a Thursday night, a ping pong table, and tons of outdoor seating to hang out and enjoy drinks. I got the watermelon sangria and it was super fruity, refreshing, and basically the perfect patio drink for warm weather. The employees were definitely busy the whole time we were there, but everyone still seemed really hardworking and kept things moving. I hate saying this because the place itself is such a vibe, but the food didn't totally live up to how good it looked. Like my boyfriend said, everything we tried was good, but probably something we could make just as well at home. Great neighborhood joint. My husband and I went in around 7 pm on a weeknight, there was about a 15-minute wait for a table, but we saw two empty seats at the bar and snagged those. The bartender was super friendly and attentive, despite having a pretty full bar the entire time we were there. For food we got the steak and cheese egg rolls and poutine to start. Egg rolls were good, the poutine was okay- not a whole lot of flavor, and I would have loved more cheese and scallions on top. For entrees, we got the short rib quesadilla and the Gavel burger. The quesadilla was decent- more cheese than meat though. My husband loved the burger, cooked perfectly. For a local place it fit the bill pretty well. read more

Drove 45 minutes with our dog, because they are listed on the BringFido app, only to be told they don't allow dogs anymore. So after waiting a bit, we got a parking spot right in front of the patio so we could have our dog in the car (windows down and a/c on) and asked to be seated at the empty table. Nope. It's for a party of 5. We are a party of 3. On our way out, we encountered a couple with their dog who ALSO drove a distance after seeing this place on the BringFido app. I hope the owner can educate their staff so they don't continue turn away good business. read more

If I could leave zero stars I would- I just experienced the worst of worst- Don't ever order a margarita here- you will receive a small glass full of ice, lime juice, and I didn't even taste a hint of tequila... then the ahi tuna tacos- nearly made me vomit, and that was just looking at the fish when it arrived... The oriental salad had no hint of oriental in it other than a few slithers of crunchy noodles- the chili based dressing burnt my mouth off and I had to drink 2 full glasses of water... dont ever order the French onion soup; I've never drunk dishwater but this tasteless, watery, thin bouilion soup with anemic sloppy cheese on-top deserved to be poured down the toilet. We checked in at the hostess station and told it would be about 30-35 minutes for a table of four, so we got on the list and headed to the bar for drinks. The bar area was standing room only but the bartender was quick to take our order. Approximately 30 minutes later our table was ready. Our first time eating here so we decided to have appetizers. Nachos with carnitas, tater tot poutine, bone-in wings with buffalo sauce and mango habanero sauce on the side for dipping, and Devil on Horseback (cajun scallops wrapped in jalapeños & bacon with chipotle aioli). Worst bartender ever! Gave her the benefit of the doubt to begin with, thought she changed her tune, which she did until she didn't. 10 ppl at the bar of which our party was 8 of them. Ordered a Maine lunch and then asked if she could hold off pouring it bc the guest may want a martini & she was mad that 'I screamed down the bar'.....and then proceeded to give us an attitude for the remainder of the night. We spend over $200.00 there and if she was nice, I would have given her well over 20%. Her loss!Talked to the head person in charge who suggested I talk to the owner. Will call tomorrow. read more

My 13 year old daughter has been here a couple of times with friends and swears by The Gavel and their boneless Buffalo Wings (She's a trustworthy critic on them..) I brought my wife there last night and decided my kid was right again. We got there at 5, and immediately caught the welcoming and laidback vibe. We sat on the deck outside and given plenty of time to figure out what to eat. They have a pretty extensive menu coupled with a daily special sheet and a card of summertime lobster items. There's a Pub/Street/Bistro/Fun slant to it and there's definitely something for everyone. My mother had the Gavel Burger - cheddar, bacon and Chipotle Sauce. A good size, solid fries and cooked to her preferences perfectly. If you can call medium well anything "perfect"... I picked the Lobster Salad special - A big pub salad of greens, red onion, bleu cheese and smoked bacon with a pile of lobster salad on top. A freaking huge pile. At 22 bucks it might be the biggest bargain they offer - a lot of joints will charge you way more for half the lobster in a hot dog roll. I suggest getting there soon before they ratchet up the portion control... We went at 3 on a Saturday's . It was a good call. Even with a good outdoor space the overall place isn't huge. By 5 there were people waiting on the sidewalk to get in. Apparently plenty of people think it's worth the trip. read more

This a cool place. It has a nice vibe and often has live music outside. At 5 o'clock on a Saturday with live music the place was packed. Staff was friendly, and we sat right down inside (outside was 45min wait). They have a decent beer selection and some tasty specialty cocktails. We got nachos to start which came in a huge iron skillet. The chips were nice and crunchy, I could have gone with slightly more cheese but they were good because they weren't soggy at all. The special salmon of the day with a mango salsa got rave reviews from my friend. She was also pumped that it came with Brussels sprouts. Shrimp tacos were much larger then expected and had great flavor. An athenos salad with salmon was good but the salmon was a bit lackluster. I love their clam chowder. It's jammed full of clams and potatoes. The creamy soup is one of THE BEST in the area and I always have it here. Fresh salads are also great at the Gavel. The crab Rangoon pizza was amazing. What upset me is I spent $19 on 'shrimp, avocado and rice and bean bowl' and it was missing avocados. Not only was it missing it turns out they don't even have any to plate. Why am I paying $19 for some rice, beans and 6 shrimp. If they had alerted me before that they were out of avocados I would have ordered something else. They did not offer to lower the price or compensate me in anyway. This a very good pub (food was very good and menu has a very nice selection.) Overall, a good New England Pub - very prototypical. Food and Service was good. My recommendation for improvement are the two hostesses at the front door on a Saturday afternoon - You are the "face," of this establishment. When patrons walk-in: 1) Probably best to not be on your phone 2) if a patron asks to sit at a table, that is not yet cleared -- it is not the "end of the world," if a patron wants to sit there. Management / Owners: My limited understanding of the restaurant industry is: Turnover Yields more revenue. if the hostesses (yes: two) proactively clear tables, you will be able to get more patrons in and out leading to incremental revenue. Very nice local pub - great ambiance, good draft beer selection including other adult beverages and service is always very satisfying (Austin the bartender is exceptional). The food can and should be better but they elect to not concentrate of offering us the best. Ownership lazy by not upping their game here and there is seldom a change of menu offering. They have a dated Phantom Gourmet video on their website which they should take off since the person responsible for the fine food in the video hasn't worked at the Gavel for years. In the end, overall I enjoy my time at the Gavel but it's frustrating knowing that they could provide their customers a better culinary offering. read more
