I only go to the Goat when my friends' band is playing- JR's Roadhouse All Star Band. They are great! Always fill the dance floor when they start belting out their jams. We were in town and went to the Goat to hear the stratoblasters! Fun and friendly bar. Band was awesome! Only downside was they didn't have anyone taking our drink orders. Had to stand in long line st the bar. I feel the bar is losing money by not having waitresses. We would have had many more beverages if we didn't have to stand in. Oh my God, only at the fucking Goat. My soon to be ex-girlfriend and I decide to go to La Parillada for some tacos one Sunday evening. As we're sitting in the car in front of the taco window I suggest going to the Goat for ONE drink. So, a couple of shots and three or four beers later she decides that everybody in the bar is bored and that it is her civic duty to do something about it. She tells me to put her name on the karaoke list. I asked her what she was going to sing and reminded her that she doesn't sing karaoke. I must have had a Nike swoosh on my forehead cause she said "just do it." I go up to the karaoke lady and put her name on the list. The lady asks me what song she was going to sing and I said "nothing, it's going to be acappella." Then I go ask her what she is going to sing. She says "my ABC's" A couple of minutes later her name is called. She walks on stage and proceeds to insult some of the patrons by saying that it looks like some of them probably didn't know their ABC's and she was going to give them a quick reminder. She got all the way to the letter E, then botched it. Then spells F U C K Y O U and starts to freestyle rap. Then the karaoke lady says "whenever you're done with your unique song feel free to get off the stage." And... She turns around, bends over and tells everyone in the bar to, and I quote "kiss my hairy ass crack." Some dude jumps out of his chair, raises his hand and yells "the line starts here" and then asks her to marry him. I proudly said "sorry buddy, she's takin." Remember this story if someone ever says "let's go have ONE drink at the Goat." read more

My momma calls this place a "cut and shoot". This is because she thinks this is one of those bars that I might get "cut" or "shot" in. I'm 30 but she's actually banned me from going to The Goat after 9:00p.m. What a bitch. This place is a great hole in the wall/honkey tonk sort of joint. There's a cool ass woman behind the bar that would probably kick your (and anyone who you're with's) ass if you started anything. The juke box does play some old tunes (songs like "Lonely Women Make Good Lovers" or "Old Flame" or other Alabama hits). Yeah, and don't ask for Harp. I have found my newest dive home and it is called the Goat. The second I walked in and saw the curved bar with the plastic "bumper" around it, the duct tape holding said plastic together, the older people at the end of the bar shooting the shit with the bartender, and the tunes on the jukebox I was in love. We sat at the bar and started drinkin. The bartender was awesome and I loved his stoner-laidback attitude...especially when you would say you needed another drink and he would nod and say "Right on." Dude, yeah, I know. Alriiiight alriiiight alriiiiight. This bar has one pool table, some of those slot machine things, and a new jukebox. It also has drunk older ladies giving people shout outs across the bar. They have some people in there that look like they took a wrong turn and meant to end up at the OK Coral. There are all ages, all socioeconomic backgrounds and it is AWESOME. Later on it started getting PACKED. How do all those people know about this place anyway? Maybe it was for the live blues band that went on at about 10pm. They got a lot of people to get up and dance. Oh and a birthday party even made a pitstop...all of the birthday party people were wearing their PJs. HAHA If you are a dive bar aficionado like me, just go. Just do it. And thank me later. I've always wondered about the 8am crowd. Now I know. They're the same kind of friendly folk that I find at night, and not one of them judged me for drinking at 8am. 'Course, it helped that they were doing the same. Snake, the morning bartender, and Dave, the afternoon bartender, are just as friendly and fun as Marsha and Don, my late-night weekend homies. Despite the crowd on a rowdy Sunday evening - The Goat is quite the little-bar-that- could. The unexpectedly awesome bar is the bookend for a an even more sad excuse for a shopping center. But lo and behold - The Goat holds its own and maybe the strip malls, too! Regulars and hipsters alike unite for a collective night of rowdiness and cheer the bar's Sunday night Karaoke special. It's no ordinary karaoke jaunt - in fact - I am certain some of the talented and brave souls that sing think they are audition for American Idol: All adding to the fun of course. The lady who runs the karaoke wait list is quite the diva as there is no certainty that you will have the spotlight. I studied the system long enough to realize you a) had to be a 'liked' regular and b) you had to tip her and the band enough. The bar gets packed, but you get a drink fast enough considering the shoving and pushing in the packed house. When you'd think the karaoke was enough - there's even more entertainment found in the pool tables in the back. But the true essence of this amazing dive bar is the people. The Goat is well, pretty dang awesome. I like to come here on Sunday evenings when they have.. get this. LIVE BAND Karaoke. That's right, belt it out and have a band playing for you! WOO. Well woo. I don't belt, I have a big aversion of embarrassing myself in front of strangers, but I like to watch other people so I'm fine with going. The beers are cheap as well as the cocktails, they have a nice patio out back if you wanna have a smoke, or just get some smoky air. They don't have food so if you want something you're welcome to bring it in (ahem, pizza next door). We also went here for New Years Eve. They had a live band and a few people got up and shook their booty to welcome in the New Year.. I don't judge. I also heard there was a Mayor sighting. Woop! The place is a dive, the bathrooms are pretty stanky and most of the chairs have holes or rips, but again its what I expect when I come, I don't judge. read more

We really loved this bar. Being that we are visiting from out of state, the patrons and staff were ridiculously welcoming and they were the only reason we stuck around. BUT, we originally came to check it out for the karaoke. There are no other words except "it sucked". The host picks up the mic and sings backup whenever he sees fit only he is #1 off key and #2 way louder than the singers when he attempts to do so. OFF KEY + LOUD AND UNINVITED = Sucky karaoke! Stop dude!!!!!! NOW, I am amending after being here for an hour. It is just getting worse. Again, editing..... When we arrived there were 10 people deep in the karaoke rotation. It shouldn't take an hour and 45 to sing a frickin song! Again. This guy should lose his job. Ok, my review went from 3-1. All because the karaoke host is THAT bad. read more

Marsha, Marsha, Marsha is one of the sweetest bartender's I ever did meet. She was pleasant, poured a stiff one and when I switched from Jameson on ice to a Budweiser so I could drive home in one piece she scoffed at me, only to let me redeem myself by letting her know I had to drive a far way home. Lota's Goat is a whole lotta fun (sorry, that was lame but I had to do it). This place is a true dive in every sense of the word. There is nothing hipster or trendy about the red duct taped bar unless you count the hanging Christmas lights as fancy. If you're lucky enough, you get a welcoming crew who ask you repeatedly if you're having a good time and dance with you while the band plays some jazzy bluesy kind of stuff. If you're really lucky, the drummer will let you pretend you know what you are doing and give it a go on his kit for a few minutes and the patrons will clap when you are done, either because they're glad you're getting off the stage or because you looked cute up there, trying to play a decent beat. I'm going to go with the latter. JW owns this bar and told me multiple times to come on back and see him again. I think he might have also proposed marriage, but I'm going to just say that he got down on one knee after our awesome dance session and kissed my hand. He was mostly a gentleman and a real nice guy. Let's hope he remembers me when I do come back. The Goat has more character than you could ask for. Between the Santa, the regulars, the awesome mullet dude (who was kind of scary actually) to the rest of the people inside who didn't give two shits about anything, this bar has got it all. It's 2010 and my New Years resolution is to go to more dive bars. But no, I need to take it a step further, as I am not one to half ass anything. I have gathered a group of my favorite hoodlums ( aka- friends) and we have decided to try 1 -4 new dives each weekend on a mini crawl through DFW. We even came up with a rating system based on 10 criteria: Drinks, Games, Entertainment, Decor, Atmosphere, clientele, food, bathrooms, Music, and Miscellaneous. The Goat was the lucky #1 on our list. 1. Drinks- excellent selection ( limited top shelf), nice pour, cheap prices. They do not have any other red wine other than Merlot ( don't judge, I wasn't trying to be fancy at the Goat, it was colder than a witches titty outside and I needed something to warm me up), however, their house Merlot was actually very fruity and tasty! 2. Games- slot machines, a pool table and of course a quick touch with many exotic photo hunts available. 3. Entertainment- a live bluesy band. Excellent. 4. Decor- many large tables perfect for groups, lots of mini bars, exposed brick, Xmas lights, no frills, dive-tastic. 5. Atmosphere- old, dim, but warm and unassuming 6. Clientele- old and beat. But sooo nice! One lady offered to take our picture and another lady picked up scarf when it fell on the floor. 7. Food- I didn't see a menu but I did see bags of Doritos, a box of candy bars and a Lance's peanut butter/cheese crackers too. My inner 8 year old was happy. 8. Bathrooms- much as you would expect in a place like this. Truly truly disgusting. 9. Music- epic juke box. I chose some Isley brothers and The Band. It fit the mood perfectly. 10. Miscellaneous- it absolutely reeked of throw up in here. It hit me in the face and burned my nose hairs the second I walked in the door. I won't hold it against you Goat, but it did make need an early departure before I added my own perfume to the throw up scent. Would I come back? Abso-freaking-lutely. But this was not the best dive of the night. Maybe we got here too early. read more

I love dive bars. Let's get this out of the way early. There is nothing I hate worse then sitting down for a drink and being judged. For being too old. For not being dressed "hip." For being too dressed up. Don't want it. Don't need it. Whatever. So I am always on the lookout for a good dive. That being the case, it was only a matter of time before I found my way to The Goat. Went somewhat early (8:30 or so), since we planned on hitting a lot of bars that night (long story short, got my Yelp "Soused" badge that night). First off, scary neighborhood. Went to a gas station down the street before we came and two homeless men immediately descended on me and started fighting over who was going to wash my windshield. Seriously. I was looking around for a hidden camera it was so surreal. Pulling into the lot at The Goat did not improve my sense of security terribly. Fortunately, once I walked in I noticed they had the parking lot on closed circuit cameras you could watch from at the bar. Needless to say I sat at the bar. Not many people there, given the early hour. Had a couple crown & cokes, waited for a little two-piece band to get set up and play, and argued Libertarian politics with the young bartender. The drinks were well-made, but a little overpriced for the surroundings. But the people watching (limited, given the sparse crowd) was enjoyable, and I liked my bartender, even though he continued to insist on the primacy of property rights. And no judgment here! I will definitely have to end my night here some time in the future, rather than starting it. read more

Well, what a surprise . This little joint was packed and the band was rocking. What the what! A live karaoke band! Amazing! The drinks were a heavy pour and the dance floor was packed. We decided to go to The Goat after reading all the reviews here on Yelp from my new Android phone app. We went for one drink, just to try it out, and wound-up staying until 2am. The bartender, Cheryl was so friendly, and made sure we were never dry. The people that were there range from young and trendy, to older and fun. Each time we've gone to The Goat, there have been live bands there, and the music was awesome. If you're looking for a good neighborhood hang-out, this is the place to go. read more

It looks like a tiny little nothing from the outside, but once you walk in, you realize that you have been duped! It really opens up in there. This is the only place that can make make 8 am look like midnight, so dark. The mix matched chairs, the regulars, the red duct tape on the bar, make shift mysterious breakfast going on....it all adds up to AWESOME. The bar staff is great, the atmosphere is wonderfully divey, and the karaoke apparently sucks, now. The most recent two times I've been to The Goat, I've had the misfortune of attending karaoke night with this "Hammertimez" guy who can't seem to run a rotation to save his life, even on a slow night. Whether you check in with him, tip him (or his friends), or just let it ride, he doesn't seem to have a good idea of who you are or where you are in his queue, and even when another singer has gone multiple times, inquiries about your position on the list will meet with a hearty "iuno" or a half-hearted "yeah, I think you're like maybe five up." (I don't know if he ever actually checks.) Showed up here on a busy night months before with another KJ who at least kept the energy up and the singers rotating effectively. There were dozens more people there than the times I've been there since, and while I only got one song in the whole time, it was nevertheless fun. Whether you're there just to sing or enjoy people belting and butchering your favorite songs, the KJ should keep things moving and the audience happy. This chief made the usually-energetic premiere karaoke dive seem like a stoned, slow-motion shuffle through a funhouse queue. read more

I'm a big fan of Dallas bars that don't feel Dallas. That being said, the Goat feels more like Wichita Falls, or Possum Kingdom. You won't find any Kronenburg here, but you can get a silver bullet or a bud light. They've also got a cigarette machine, and buying cigarettes out of a machine never loses its novelty. The karaoke selection leans heavily towards country. I really wanted to sing Earth Wind and Fire; needless to say they didn't have it. However, this is a place to watch, not sing. You'll see the locals at their best, and by that, I mean old drunks will sing country and power ballads. I'd give this place 5 stars, but $2.75 for a domestic bottle hurts. Instead, I'll give it 4 and a fist pump. A power ballad fist pump. read more

Karaoke night was THAT good. I went by myself and got on the list too late, but it was still well worth it. Then this little tiny beautiful girl went up and just destroyed "Valerie" by Amy Winehouse. The definition of a Dive bar you ask?? How about a shady establishment that normally you wouldn't think of entering without a bodyguard.....that is so dark inside it makes 8am feel like 2am...that has red duck tape holding up the plastic padding that lines the bar.....every chair is different...the tables are no less than 30 years old and are barely standing....a huge stage in the corner for live music and karaoke.....the galaga machine next to the jukebox and cigarette dispenser....a handful of TVs mounted for the occasional sports fan....and the rugged looking biker bartender with the long grey ponytail. I believe that this is the hang out spot for the Lakewood locals to go to, I didn't know what to expect there, but I wasn't really in the mood for a dive-y like bar for that night. Where it is located is unusual, you have a Whole Foods store right across the street, then you have the million dollar homes just seconds away from the bar. The Goat makes it look like it's a mix of hipsters and upper class people in the area. Drinks were made very strong, and at a reasonable price. So if you are looking for a chill laid-back bar where live bands may play the blues or country, and where you don't feel like wearing your clubbing heels and dress, this is the place to kick back in your cowboy boots, jeans, plaid shirts, and maybe cowboy hat. read more

Dealing with drunk people for a living isn't the easiest thing in the world and when you have to make a living doing it, why wouldn't you favor the regulars who support your show or tip you graciously? Carmen started the show nearly 10 years ago on Sundays at the goat and has built up an amazing following with sheer hard work and determination. I am so proud of her, and I love her because not only is she my favorite karaoke lady, she is my mom. read more

The drinks are cheap, the bartender knows most people by name and the smoker's patio usually has something interesting going on. First of all, I'd like to point out that the same old man that's in the pic with Kristen G. was sitting at the corner of the bar when we got there at 8 AM this past Saturday for the Early Bird Pub Crawl. He is what I aspire to be in my golden years and Lota's Goat is the kind of place I could easily see myself spending way too much time. Despite the scruffy appearance of the bar, its employees and its other early morning patrons, we were all treated like one big greasy family. The bartender was friendly and most importantly had no problem with a bunch of rabblerousers causing a ruckus at such an early hour. Being the first of a number of bars, I opted to stick with beer because I wasn't mentally or physically prepared for liquor (a philosophy I wish I followed the rest of the day). Those drinking something stronger didn't seem to mind, but a 6 beer bucket for $13 isn't a bad way to start the day either. I'm excited to come back and check this place out when it's in full swing. Of course, that may make getting bathroom access a lot more interesting too. Great times! read more
