    Market 34 Burger...
    Max M.

After reading just about every review since this new eatery opened, negative & positive, we decided to try it out ourselves to see how we would rate it after having lunch there this past Friday! My daughter, the "Foodie" in our Family had mentioned Marker 34 to us and we were excited to go there and try it out! The Restaurant was pretty busy at noon and at first glance we thought it would be bigger but it was an unexpected airy and pleasant atmosphere! The large sliders were open to the beautiful views of the Marina & Merrimack River allowing the breeze to fill the Restaurant! It took a few minutes for one of the waitstaff to fill our water glasses and after taking a sip it was just tap water, what No Ice cubes? I've never been to Restaurant that serves tap water from their water pitcher without Ice in it? After 10 minutes our Waitress, I won't mention her name and you'll find out later in this review why! We ordered three Allagash Whites on draft and it took almost 15 minutes before they were brought to the table, they were Ice Cold and actually ended up being the best part of our Lunch! Please read on! ;) The Menu, an All Day Menu, is somewhat limited for an upscale Restaurant! We're sure that the Menu will become more diversified in the Future! Since you can never go wrong with a Burger, so we thought , my partner and I chose the Marker 34 Burger and my Daughter opted for the PEI Mussels! We were asked how we would like our Burgers cooked and my partner said Medium Well and I always get mine Medium! After another 30 minutes a couple of young Men brought us the food! We always cut our Burgers in half and hers was cooked Medium/Medium Rar and mine was literally raw and cold, not to mention rather tasteless, something was definitely missing, probably bc it was rar without any noticeable spices and lacked the flavor of a properly grilled Burger! I don't think they grill their Burgers I think they might be baked? We were hungry so we just sucked it up and dealt with it! On a side note, the Burger Buns were not toasted they were charred and burnt! Our Waitress came over and asked how everything was and my partner said that her Burger wasn't done as ordered and she replied "that it seemed to be the theme of the day", and that she would forward the feedback, she also offered to have them done over but at this point it just became a mood point!...that's why I won't mention her name bc she obviously had other complaints and making that comment to us would probably get her fired!...and speaking of other complaints, the party at the table next to us were also having issues with their food and weren't happy campers! My Daughter, who's a real foodie as mentioned before , rated the PEI Mussels a 3 out of 5 Stars and said that the Mussels should've be served with a nice Crusty French Baguette not a couple of slices of grilled white bread! She also mentioned that they were rather small Mussels for being PEI Mussels! Ok, enough of the negativity! We really wanted to give this Restaurant a decent review, but in all honesty, we can't! Our Waitress should've, at least, comped a portion of the bill, maybe just the beers or a burger in good faith, but that didn't happen! Over a hundred bucks w/ tip for a subpar meal was, to say the least, disappointing! We understand the growing pains that a new Restaurant goes through but after being open a Month they should've, pretty much had all their wrinkles ironed out by now, but that certainly wasn't the case! I hope that this Restaurant gets its act together bc it's in a great location but the main reason one goes out to eat is ultimately the food and Marker 34 just didn't deliver! Maybe we just hit it at a wrong time bc there are many 4/5 star reviews? Maybe we shouldn't have ordered the Burgers ! Shoulda, woulda, coulda" comes to mind! Maybe, and that's a big "Maybe" we'll give Marker 34 another shot in a few months but we'll definitely order something other than Burgers! Sorry about this long winded "Novel" of a Review! Rating 1-5 Stars Atmosphere/Ambiance 4, would've been a 5 but the Restaurant was pretty loud and you literally have to raise your voice for someone to hear you! Service 3 bc it was very Slow! Food 3 bc it could've been so much better! Menu 2 not much to choose from! Who eats fried Pickles as a Lunch entree?

We dined at Markar34 for lunch on their second day of business. The location is beautiful with a modern dining room and a nice outdoor seating deck with a view of the Merrimack river. Service from start to finish was exceptionally friendly and competent. I usually wait 4-5 weeks before eating at a new restaurant to allow for the kinks to be worked out, but we were in the area, saw some posts on social media and decided to give it a try. For their second day, and with an almost full house, I think they did a good job overall. There were some minor food and service kinks, but management addressed them. I have every confidence this is going to be a well run restaurant with a good offering of food. They are currently working with a limited menu that differs from what you will see online. Now about the food, we started with the arancini appetizer and received what we thought to be a generous portion of tasty arancini. My only regret was that there was no bread provided to soak up what was a tasty sauce that accompanied the arancini. The chef has a restrained hand and we thought the dish was properly seasoned. I really dislike when food is overly salty, and that was not the case here. We then moved on to one of their rib eye steak sandwiches which was also nicely prepared. I am excited to see how this restaurant evolves and I believe it will become a great addition to choices in the Amesbury area.

As someone who considers a well-constructed savory cocktail one of life's finer pursuits, I was genuinely excited. The hostess was lovely, warm even, but informed me that without a dinner reservation, the bar wouldn't be available until 9 pm. I was not welcome to simply sit and have a drink. I asked -- politely, I'd like to think -- whether an exception might be made. I was only in town for the weekend and promised that I could be in and out in twenty minutes but the answer was an unambiguous 'no'. There's something particularly unwelcoming about turning away a solo guest who has sought you out specifically for something only your restaurant offers. I came because Carmine does something nobody else does, at least nowhere I've found. And I was unceremoniously turned away with nothing to show for it. I understand the math. A Saturday evening at a restaurant like this lives and dies by full dinner covers, and a solo drinker nursing a cocktail for twenty minutes does not move the needle. But hospitality, real hospitality, has never been purely a numbers exercise. The irony is that I adore this restaurant. The food is spectacular, full stop. Had I possessed a second stomach, I would have happily demolished the Tonno Royale Spaghettini without a moment's hesitation. Carmine has earned genuine loyalty from me as a diner. But a Spicy Sicilian remains, for now, on my list of unfinished business -- and that is a small, specific disappointment I wasn't expecting to leave with.

They ended up filling up a little bit after we arrived. It was cute how the menu lists out all team members including servers. That's a sweet touch and I guess easy to do when they're changing menus every few weeks. We liked how fresh and clean everything tasted. Seafood portions were big too. We ordered: small power tower, dozen oysters (3 of each on their menu), 2 composed oysters, octopus skewer, mussels, lobster salad, crab bisque, lobster pasta, and baked Alaska We started off with the small power tower. We couldn't choose the oysters or ceviche but it came out being 3 Dixon Point, 3 Norumbega, and tuna crudo. The ceviche portion seemed a bit small even after knowing that it's half a portion of a regular order. My family enjoyed the oysters so much that we ended up ordering a dozen more, 3 of each available at the time. It was fun to try out the different flavor profiles across the various oysters. We also inquired about the composed oysters which changes even more regularly than their menu. Each time it's some sort of tart flavor and a fruity flavor. When we went, they added grape and some sort of vinegar to it. We didn't expect that combination and it turned out quite refreshing. Octopus skewer might be the least favorite of the table. The texture was a bit soft, more mushy than tender chewy. Mussels were also something my family liked. I only ate a few pieces because I had a muddy one in the beginning. Lobster salad was a crowd favorite given the large pieces of lobster and avocado. Using bibb lettuce made it less wet and watery which adds to the creaminess. Lobster pasta felt duplicative when we already got lobster salad but I still really wanted to order it for some creamy savoriness and carbs. It hit the spot for sure. Unfortunately there were a few pieces of lobster that weren't as fresh and couldn't eat. We told them about it and didn't request for anything but they ended up comping the dish. We last minute added the crab bisque after enjoying all the other items so much. I didn't like the smokey flavor so didn't have too much. At the end we were so satisfied that we wanted to try out the desserts too. We were debating between the baked Alaska and the tofu cheesecake. We ended up getting the baked Alaska because it seems more unique. It's not the type where you get a whole ice cream mountain covered in meringue that they'll bake, torch, or pour alcohol lit on fire. I think it's more like a deconstructed baked Alaska - disappointing but still looked nice and tasted good. The meringue was whipped very nicely, thick fluffy texture. The torch on it was just right too, providing sufficient char in appearance and flavor. The black sesame praline on top was surprising as an element and its nice toasty smokey addition to the dish. The splash of yuzu (or passionfruit?) sauce at the bottom was sufficient for the cake pieces and not sweet meringue (I know it probably still has a lot).

A manager came over to ask if anybody had visited us, apologized for the delay, and returned with our drinks. I'm estimating it was a bit over 30 minutes or so before drinks arrived. Our waitress did return, apologized and took our food order. I wasn't so sure about ordering sushi, but glad we did. The maki we tried were very good, fresh and beautifully presented. A great start. We switched gears for our entree and went with a parpadelle bolognese. A nice generous portion that was as good as some of the Italian spots in the area. Our friends also enjoyed their dishes. Portions were generous and prices were reasonable. I would easily have given 4 stars, but the service needs improvement. You would need to plan to spend at least a couple of hours for a lunch. In our case it was not a big deal as we were enjoying time with friends, but I can understand the other negative reviews now. We do plan to return to work our way deeper into the menu, and hope they will have more staff to help with the front of the house.
