Ok, I don't pick this hotel, my company does. I need to send them a box of chocolates, because I love this hotel. It oozes everything a Holiday Inn is not- class, history, elegance, dignity. The staff is friendly. The rooms are small-ish, but still big enough, really. One advantage? a 10 minute walk to the train station, for a ride into the City, if that's your game. I stayed in the Grand Summit Hotel last night for a special event. Check-in process was efficient and easy. Service was friendly. The hotel is a beautiful, historical building. The room had two double beds. I liked the book case in the room. It made the are feel homey. Shower was small. Overall, very clean and comfortable. Rate for room was reasonable. Room includes a buffet breakfast at the Hat Tavern downstairs. We were greeted upon arriving and there was a great spread of breakfast goodies. OJ was yum and the cheese blintzes were a great surprise. The event room is spectacular. Recently renovated and teched up to the max. Jimmy the catering director knows his food and all passed hors d'oeuvres were top quality. Loved the mashed potato bar. Room decor is stunning but was really impressed with the TV screens which connect wirelessly to any device and turn to mirrors when not in use. read more

Beautiful old building in Summit, one of my favorite cities in NJ. Unfriendly staff...The receptionists were stern...not even a smile. No one helps with the doors or bags. We got a room way, way, way, back, back, back, facing the parking lot. Not the nicest scenery...We might as well have been staying in a motel. Because there is a back porch that isn't sectioned off between rooms, we had to keep the curtains closed for privacy since there were people walking by. A few aspects of the decor in the room looked updated, but the room felt moist and smelled musty... Long halls, puke green wall paint, mix of motel lamp and busted-up Colonial furniture felt, all in all, a bit of a 3-start hotel version of The Shining for me. I'm kind of disappointed they would put us in the quality room they did when the place seems to be at low occupancy. I'd recommend just staying at the Hilton. read more

This is still my go-to hotel when we visit family in Summit as it is conveniently located. The majority of the staff are very friendly and they go out of their way to assist their guests or take care of special requests. Our room was very comfortable and clean. Even though there is no daily housekeeping service (most hotels have discontinued this as well) we had no issues getting what we needed, We were recently there for Thanksgiving. This was our first visit back since COVID started in 2020. The hours of operation for the Hat Tavern are very limited. I understand that there are business decisions that factor in but I hope the hours of operation are extended in the future. I used to enjoy having the convenience of having breakfast at the hotel. Since we did not have a car we had to walk into town if we wanted breakfast at a nearby restaurant which is not as convenient. I appreciate the complimentary continental breakfast served in the hotel lobby but it is not quite the same as sitting in the restaurant, ordering from a menu, and being waited on by your favorite servers. I sure hope the long-time employees found work somewhere else. Thanks to all of the staff for your hard work. The renovations still look great. My husband and I and our six kids were stranded here when our flight was canceled at Newark international airport. The front desk receptionist was incredibly helpful and kind and found us two rooms at 4 AM in the morning. Our stay was involuntary, but pleasant. The separate rooms both had two queen beds, with TVs, a mini fridge, and a nice bathroom. They were tiny rooms, but clean and comfortable, with cute little features, such as built-in lights in the headboards, and a mirror with a built-in nightlight in the bathroom. Great water pressure in the shower. Our family really enjoyed the full continental breakfast served in the ballroom until 10 AM. Cereal, bagels, toast, muffins, eggs, bacon, yogurt, and many other side items made for a great meal! The rooms were a bit pricey for so little space (around $250 a night) and no luxury, but other than that we were pleased. Summit is a cute little town and I recommend the hotel if you're visiting. read more

Update: I changed the review from 2 to 3 stars. The hotel manager contacted me and personally addressed the issues. She was friendly, concerned and apologized for the experience I had. She explained that I was in an "older" part of the hotel that had not been renovated yet, and that should not have happened. The newer part of the hotel (I saw one of the rooms) is amazing. She explained that I should have been placed in one of those rooms, but it is newer staff at the front desk. I will give this hotel another chance the next time I visit again. If you decide to book the hotel, be sure to request a room in the newer part of the hotel. ********************** I first stayed here 22 years ago. I've since stayed twice over the years and the changes have not been good. It was a huge disappointment to stay in a room that was just above an "EconoLodge" scale, and it's been DECADES since I've stayed in an Econolodge! No basic amenities such as fridge or micro. I've stayed in Marriotts and Hiltons that were nicer. My room (which is the equivalent of an added trailer to a school) was located outside of the main hotel area. You literally have to walk outside of the main hotel to your room. This would be HORRIBLE during winter/snow season The first room I received had sketchy electrical where they put a piece of folded paper behind the elecrical plate. Like electrical fires happen this way. WTF?!!!! I would think twice about staying here. read more

Hotel - 4 stars! Total fandom of this place. Event planning, staff, and customer service - 25 stars. This place is the real deal class act. What a damn great hotel. Like honestly, what a treat. First, it's historical and that completely adds to it's charm. They don't make 'em like this anymore. With that, it is historical and if you are looking for all the modern frills of today's W and Westin's, you will not find it here. I ended up in a suite and I hate to say it, but it was bigger than my Jersey City apartment. The bathroom was large, the bed comfy and the room charming albeit a bit vintage. The staff at The Grand Summit Hotel are tops. Checkin was seamless, there was an issue with our tv (in the bathroom) and we didn't even mention it, but upon coming back into our room after a long night, I found that they dropped off some complimentary goodies and the tv was fixed. They want to get it right. The complimentary breakfast buffet at The Hat Tavern is wonderful and way more impressive than most. Eggs, fruit, blintzes, bacon, pancakes, cereal, coffee, tea, they pretty much had everything you'd want. I also worked with the Grand Summit Hotel on an event. That portion of the review is 10 stars. They take pride in their work and not to mention put 1000% of their heart into it and I gotta say, it shows. So easy and and wonderful to work with, the event was perfect and food was magnificent. And they even have unique (and local touches) that most places like the Grand Summit don't do. For example - they use Natso's ice cream, a Newark legend. They had Ommegang on draft, a craft beer and not just your Bud/Coors Light combo. Those really add to the event and both are items people that attended the event are still talking about to this day! I would without a doubt say yes to weddings, parties, showers or anything you need if you're looking to work with the Grand Summit Hotel. They care and that's rare these days. I came here to stay because of a training for work. After looking at the hotel online and seeing the rooms and reviews, I was a little nervous about staying here. The staff at the desk was very friendly. The girl was very informative and friendly. 1. Coming to the room, the doors were very old and took some time to figure out how to use the key to open the door. 2. Scoping the room out, noticed there was not a microwave nor a fridge in the room. 3. After sitting on the bed, a bottle cap from probably a previous guest is STILL under the dresser in the room. This just makes me feel as if housekeeping does not properly clean the room. 4. While we are on housekeeping, they came to the room at 8 AM to tend to it. I, getting ready to head out for my training, was not ready and still getting dressed. Not understanding why housekeeping would come so early. Came back to the room around 5:30, bottle cap still under the dresser and a hair was found on top of the comforter that they just made the bed. (Hair was not mine) 5. Speaking of hair, after getting out the shower, went to the sink to brush my teeth and the wall had hair all over again. Again, not my hair. 6. Light over the table was broken. If this were not paid for by my company, I would ask for a refund. This hotel is not somewhere I would ever stay again. Stayed there one night in an emergency in late October. The hotel has a lengthy online Covid policy but the employees are not cooperating. I do love the ambiance in the lobby, & halls. It does give the hotel great character. However the rooms I feel are outdated!! You can still have old architectural character, without having old dusty books on a shelf, and a stained tub. Doors, Tubs, Crown Molding, Elevator, Bedding, Air Conditioning Units need to be updated. The bed was EXTREMELY, & I mean EXTREMELY uncomfortable!!!!!!!!!!!! The pillows were even worse!! I'm actually staying at the hotel now, & it's 6:05AM...I've been up since 2AM due to a swore back from sleeping on this bed for 3 nights. If I'm going to spend $200 a night, I expect to sleep on a cloud! Just saying!! Pros: Great Breakfast Selection!!!! (Taste wise, it was ok) I travel for business, & this is hands down the best selection of a continental breakfast ever!!! The staff is very polite, attentive, & friendly!! Cons: BED..PILLOWS...some of the bed dressing hadn't been cleaned (bed skirt, comforter). Had stains when I checked in. For a hotel regardless of all the other things going on, should NOT have lumpy pillows! It feels like I'm laying on a bag of moth balls... And the room service menu was lack there of..not only that..everything on the ROOM SERVICE menu is a $1 more than the RESTAURANT menu downstairs. Which they also already add a $1.00 to your order PLUS 19% service charge. I still tipped..but that's a bit much for food that doesn't taste any better than a local IHOP. Came her for a special event in the newly renovated ballroom. The décor was a great mix of historic (the hotel has been here for over hundred years) and new, with gilt columns, soaring ceilings and wonderful architectural features throughout. Food and service were excellent. The passed hors d'oeuvres were outstanding, this highlights being the salmon mousse cones, the tuna tartar, beef sliders, kimchi and beef skewers and the Andouille sausage canapés. We also had a huge array of buffet stations; raw bar, pasta bar, a very cool mashed potato parfait bar, Middle Eastern station, carving station, Asian station, antipasto bar and dessert stations. The service was outstanding and everyone went out of their way to accomdate us during our stay. read more

I do not recommend this hotel. The first bullet point below is absolutely horrible to me. Everything else just piled on together. 1. We checked in and brought in our bags and then left for several hours. When we returned and the kids were tucked into bed, I shut the bathroom door and accidentally touched two towels that were used by previous occupants. The towels had lipstick stains and god knows what else on them. After two calls to the front desk, someone came and removed but I could not help feeling completely grossed out that our room was not clean. 2. We were in room 201. The entire room (bed room and sitting room. It's a little suite.) was shaking for hours from the downstairs DJ of an event that was going on during our first night. Apparently during the time that I got my kids tucked into bed, they were giving speeches so the head splitting base did not start until I had unpacked my small kids. When we called downstairs, we were told that we weren't the first people to complain and that the party was scheduled to end at 11:30pm. Don't except a room on the second floor if there is an event at the hotel. It was truly miserable. 3. One of the elevators smelled like throw up. An inadequate clean up job perhaps? (This would not surprise me given the filthy towels left in my room.). For now, I stick to the other elevator. 4. Bathroom light switch is outside the door so there is no way to avoid flooding the room with light if you visit in the night. 5. Crazy exposed wires EVERYWHERE. Seems like a fire hazard. My kids are 6 so they know not to touch. If you have really young ones, I think some of these wires could be a death trap. 6. Toilet overflowed on Christmas Eve because the room above us had a clogged toilet. 10pm visits from maintenance and then housekeeping. 7. The day after Christmas, housekeeping was banging on the door at 7:15AM waking up my overtired kids. 8. Charged for 3 nights parking but we only had a car in the lot for 1 nights. They adjusted to only charge the $10 for 1 night of parking. But a parking charge here is a bit of a joke to begin with. Wish the hotel left me in more of a jovial mood. read more

We had a horrible night at this hotel. I should have known something was amiss when I was unable to reach the hotel by phone prior to arriving after calling and being put on hold over 10 times. Our room was dark and musty when we got there. It was an unrestful night filled with coughing and difficulty breathing. It wasn't until the morning that we noticed the black streaks and staining on the walks, curtains and SHEETS caused by mold!! We were so sick from the poor air quality and mold. Aside from the mold the room really wasn't clean. Pillows were old and like bricks. The hallways are something out of The Shining. I was really surprised how dingy the place was. Its definitely got an eerie vibe to it and is most likely haunted. read more

I stay here on business trips. The hotel is better than the Best Western in New Providence and cheaper than the Short Hills Hilton. It's close to my office. You get a huge free breakfast and the location is great -- a 10-minute walk to downtown Summit, which has nice restaurants and stores. The hotel has a pool, restaurant (Hat Tavern) and free passes to the excellent YMCA. The staff is nice and they'll give you a free ride to the train station -- Manhattan is only 40 minutes away on NJ Transit. But the rooms are tiny, the building is really old, the wi-fi doesn't always work, parking costs $10 a day, and the air conditioner is in the wall. Their main business is wedding receptions - not business travelers. I'm not rich so I can't be fussy. So I stay here. read more

Don't let the "grand" fool ya. We were suppose to stay for two weeks. But got outta there after two days. And two days felt like forever. All the bad reviews you see above are true to a T. Beds horrible. All floors creek. Toilet broke about four times. Pool was filthy../ too gross to even swim in. Tv kept going off and wouldn't hold the signal probably cause it's 100 years old like the hotel. Hallways stink of musty. And yesssss there actually is cords all over the place and that is because there is nowhere to plug things into walls. Oh geez honestly just don't go there lol sucks sucks sucks. read more

Wish there was a zero star option. Awful place. Old, creepy and no services. No housekeeping. Rooms are dismal, the bathroom was tiny. Reserved a two room suite, so our special needs child could stay with us. We had a confirmation, we're charged for the suite, but we're given a single room. One bartender One waiter and one cook for a very eventful night. Management were well aware ahead of time of the traffic coming through the door. Yet they did nothing to prepare for the crowd. Not the staffs fault that their management disrespectfully understaffed them. The workers tried their best and we commend them for their best efforts. Asked for lower floor room with easy access to the oool due to problems walking. Got top floor room and could not access pool at all because stairs involved to get there. I stayed at this Grand Summit Hotel in Summit NJ in September 2018. It was a disgusting hotel. I arrived in my room to find the other queen bed spread had many old spots of what appeared to be old tried to wash out obvious blood stains spattered all over . I told the management 3 times . They didnt remove the blanket untill 2 days later only a few hours before I decided I had to leave this discusting hotel..Also ALL *only* were men working at the hotel were very rude , never attentive at all ,never offered help with my luggage I was a woman travelling alone. The room was very dirty.. a dirty stinky curtain/sheet for a closet door. The air conditioning wall system was filthy gross stuff hanging out of it and my camera close up showed bugs lots of bugs.. I took a picture showed manager he just nodded. The shower was a single small tiny only shower that even just trying to move to use a wash cloth made it impossible. There are several others that have said that in the reviews . And also about the air conditioner and rudeness of staff. I do have many pictures to back up what I am statng here . I actually had to change my flight to come home 2 days earlier then I was reserved for. All of the hotels were booked within 15 miles when I called .The flight change cost me 200.00 + extra back to west coast. When I explained to the manager why I had to leave early and showed pictures , he just stone faced said he will see what the morning auditor would say about not charging me for the following days I would not be there. I waited for her the auditor (only woman working there I saw for 2 days I was there which was strange i thought) .. The auditor tried to give me a wrong charge than what she would do by not charging the days I wouldnt be there I noticed before I left hotel she did charge me after all.. I brought to her attention and she finally fixed it to the days I stayed.. after I payed and before leaving I told all 4 of them including the manager why i was leaving early and of the pictures i showed of the room. They did not say a word of sorry or anything .just stone cold looked at me. It was a terrible experience a discusting hotel . My stay was September 2018. If you read the more current reviews you'll see there is definitely a very big horrible problem with this hotel. Founded in 1868, the Grand Hotel has the ambience of kept-up, bygone grandeur. For example, two sets of entry doors off a covered carriage (now vehicular) way into the lobby. There is 24-hour desk service and, in winter, a large, welcoming fireplace with luxurious leather chairs for guests. In the center of the lobby is another leather seating arrangement to easily accommodate 10 or 12 people. There is a coffee machine 24-hours a day and a refreshing container of iced water, well-appointed with lemons. During the week, a car rental agency has an office to one side of the main lobby and the hotel offers regular shuttle service to area businesses. Downstairs or via elevator is the Hat Tavern, with a long, inviting bar offering dinners, from craft beers and sports events. Further in is a full dining room where diners can enjoy prime ribs, hamburgers, fish & chips, or a veggie burger. Service is most attentive. Breakfast is also served in the Hat Tavern. However, if you're looking forward to the advertised tapas, no longer on the menu. Our room was okay, a little sparse for a 4-star hotel. For example, there's no place to charge your electronics and a rather small TV screen. The bathroom was small, with only a single sink and limited counter space. On the other hand, the plush, whiter-than-white towels were abundant. All of the furniture was in good condition. Overall, the Grand Hotel is wonderfully convenient to downtown Summit and notable for its architecture, Maybe, the promised updates to the rooms will remove my complaints in a few months. read more

The Grand Summit Hotel is a quaint hotel with lots of character. I stayed in a room this past weekend with two double beds. The room was a nice size and bathroom was small but kept very clean. There is a heater/air conditioner underneath the window that you can control. The room heats up in just a few minutes. My only complaint about the room are the window curtains because the curtains do not close together all the way. When the curtains are closed there is still a good 3-4 feet gap between them. Since our window faced the lit parking lot, the room was not bat cave dark at night, which is how I prefer it. Nevertheless, I was still able to sleep. Next time I'll bring my eye mask! Breakfast is included with the room and is located downstairs in the Hat Tavern. The breakfast was pretty great and included bagels, danishes, cereal, fresh fruit, eggs, bacon, sausage, and Starbucks coffee/tea. There is a $9 parking fee but that includes all the cars for the people staying in the room. read more

A Quick Check in is probably the best thing ever when arriving to a hotel. Nothing worst then standing around like a schlub with all your bags and crap. The Grand Summit Hotel had me checked in real quick. Yea, It's like being in The Shining...but I dig that! Breakfast included! The rooms were a smaller size, but that's expected in an old place. I really like the fact that the windows can be opened. Since we're not in Atlantic City and you probably won't jump out the window from gambling your kids college fund away they windows aren't sealed shut. I like to have a little fresh air circulating after a night of drinks...especially if your driving the porcelain boat. I must say that my sink didn't work that great (Room 211), When I arrived I needed to shave and that became a mess since the sink wasn't really draining. Also no Fridge in the room. In place I filled all my garbage cans with ice from the machine and put a couple of beers in each. Boom. The free breakfast was really good. Definitely several steps above your average continental breakfast of a couple of stale danish's and frozen waffles. Blintz anyone? Good Time. read more

Their newly renovated lobby is a great place to stop for a drink or gourmet coffee. It is very pretty in a vintage style. The selection of gourmet coffees and craft beers is exceptional. I have been a patron of the Grand Summit since the days of the Hunt Club. While I missed the wonderful food and service in the more formal trappings of the Hunt Club, I continued to dine at the Summit as it transitioned to the Hat Tavern. Admittedly, the style of food and service and pub like environment is not my cup of tea they did a good job in executing on this concept. I was aghast what had transpired over the past year and thought that they had made a big mistake in their changes to the menu as well as the deterioration of the quality of the food. Recently, I have had the opportunity to dine at the Hat on three occasions and actually met the new person in charge of culinary. I am delighted to say that the food quality is perhaps the best it has ever been and, from what I was told the menu ( very nicely done with a broad array of interesting items-something for everyone and well priced) will continue to evolve. Those who are looking for a "hamburger joint" with greasy appetizers that you can find in every strip mall will be disappointed. The food I enjoyed is as good as any restaurant in the greater Summit area and the hotel appears to be going through an extensive remodeling. I am so happy to see that the Grand Summit is back and it is better than ever. read more

Worst hotel I've ever stayed in. From the dated decor to the rips in the curtains I don't really know what to say. I was here on business and my company chose this place I had early mornings everyone and didn't get a wink of sleep because through the thin walls you could hear everyone's conversations footsteps toilets flushing tv commercials. The food from the hat tavern wasn't good at all but the price I paid said otherwise... $20 for a burger with French fries and a ginger ale? Room service also showed up at 7:08am with the loudest knocks I ever hear. I told my company to never use this hotel again. read more
