What a great place to hang out. The staff were friendly, drinks were good, music wasn't too loud, etc. what stood out to me was the size of this bar, it felt spacious which I liked. I read some past reviews with one star and I would completely disagree and assume they are exaggerating. It's clear as day that you have to be 21 and over to enter, regardless if it's empty or not. Cool dive bar with a cool patio. The patio has a basketball net, so yes, people can just pick up ball and play. You can also order "food" from next door through the window facing the patio - although the food options are not the same as the ones I saw in the pictures. No more arepas, unfortunately. In its place are some overpriced cheesecakes and sandwiches, but they do have savory ones. It would be good if the food options improved. But as far as a bar go, the drinks are great, and affordable. I had a mixed drink called the Cumberf**k and one was enough to almost knock me out, surprisingly. No bar minimum for credit cards, thankfully. read more

The Grapevine is incredible. Yes, it has that divey feel (without being full of dodgy types), but they have Champagne! There's even Dom on that menu and despite the inherent joy in drinking a 300 dollar bottle of Champagne in less than posh environs, my wallet wasn't in cooperation. But still! Where else can you do this? Plus, there's a positively cozy feeling that you don't typically get in what one erroneously chalk off as any old dive bar. So yeah, this isn't that place. It's one inviting room leading into another and there's a really swell patio as well. I settled for a reasonably priced glass or three of bubbly and had all the good feels throughout my time here. After Sunday funday at brunch, my friend the Yelp Elite OG Venus C. suggested dropping by the Grapevine. Since I was off the next day I decided to tag along and have a drink. The parking lot is raggedy. But once we got inside, the bar was really charming. The signs are hilarious and made me giggle. My favorite part of the bar besides the signs was the fact that they have frozen drinks. It's so rare to find a bar with frozen drinks these days. I opted for the pom pom and I want to try the Tangerita next time. The pom pom was so yummy and tickled my fancy for the afternoon. After sitting and chatting for a bit, Venus suggested that we go out back to check out the basketball (?) court. We ventured out back and saw a big screen where a large crowd was watching the Saints game (sorry for walking by, at least it was during a commercial break!). In addition to the big screen, there was another bar area, several tables, a big patio, and to my surprise a lot of space. Overall, the Grapevine is a pretty cool dive bar. First time here, the bar itself and atmosphere was great. The bartender was scary though. He (white male blonde hair) screamed (forehead vein popping out and everything) at my friend and I for our unsatisfactory tip amount (we were mid pulling out extra cash). Then threw some of the money back at us and said that line "you obviously need this more than I do". He then poorly attempted to get 2 other patrons at the bar to also shame us for the tip amount. When my friend attempted to calm him down and explain we were actively in the process of getting more cash for him he literally wouldn't let them speak.. just yelled at the top of his lungs over and over again "don't go out if you don't know how to tip". It only stopped because we finally just walked away. When we stepped onto the patio and were trying to process what the hell had just happened, there were several different groups of people who stated they also got yelled at or had passive aggressive remarks made to them by the same bartender as well. So I imagine he is very comfortable with displaying this kind of behavior. When I tell you it was the most uncomfortable experience for everyone involved, I am not exaggerating. Drunk off my first drink at Grapevine while writing this review. Yes. Just yes. This is the bar with personality, cheap drinks, and ample parking and seating I've been looking for in Dallas. Step inside for happy hour and the bartender immediately hits me up and starts giving me the rundown. Wifi password, the usual drink specials, and oh what is that? Yup, frozen drinks with everclear, vodka, tequila. All the good stuff. I order their special - the cumberfuck - which I am informed they are the only place in the universe that serves it. Cucumber, vodka, and a splash of pomegranate slush? Yes. Then just when I think things can't get better, I learn that my first drink is free. My next drink is $4. And it is strong. I walked in on a rainy Wednesday evening to a lovely mixed crowd singing George Michael. I got my signature bottle of champagne ($20- but not bad for Dallas) and took a seat in a corner, bopping my self- conscious little head to Billie Jean. Within 30 seconds, I'd made friends. One beautiful stranger told me he'd been trying to figure out who I reminded him of-- a young Christie Brinkley. Hello, stranger. The people watching is amazing. The music is great. There's not a shred of hoity-toity-ness at this bar in Oak Lawn; just friendly faces, awesome music, and plenty of drinks for everyone. Inside, they have pool tables, mismatched furniture, extravagant couches, an incredible jukebox that lets you choose from 160,000 songs, and TV's all about. Outside is even better.... ping pong, a small basketball court, a big screen for sports watching, Christmas lights in the trees, an outdoor bar, and a ton of picnic tables to sit around with your buddies. I think it would be impossible to get bored at The Grapevine. Even if you come alone, you'll make friends quickly. It's a small space with an interactive atmosphere that will encourage you to mingle! Besides all those bells and whistles, The Grapevine has amazing drink specials every single day. Every. Single. Day. They do Happy Hour on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday ALL DAY long, and the rest of the week it lasts until 7pm. Everything is $2.50 - $3.50... that's a lot of happy hours to enjoy. When I first walked into The Grapevine I loved that it was a cozy little bar. And then I checked out the back patio and WOW this place is huge! Lots of space , a roof top deck, and even a basketball hoop! What else do you need? Well, according to other yelpers...a bellini made with everclear (sounds dangerously good!) I skipped the bellini this time because it was 4 PM in the afternoon and I wanted to be able to stay awake past 5, but next time for sure. Good Christ why have I not been here before? $5 Everclear Bellinis were my drink of choice...and after 6 of them I was feeling damn good :) (Happy Birthday to me!). I wasn't a drunken mess when we got there, so I remember some spiffy light fixtures, an awesome little bar and a bunch of mixmatched furntiure in the first seating area, a bigger area with more mixmatch, and then finally, the wonderful patio where we greatfully plopped our asses for the night. With the fan on it was the perfect night for a nice patio sit. People watching was incredible. Every type of person you can imagine. My single friend and I had a drunken blast trying to pick out guys and playing "guess who is straight". A cute waitress came around every so often to refill our drinks, and the dude bartending upfront was super swell, too. Damn...that jukebox- its something else. I am amazed at how difficult it is the review this place. Because it sort of defies description. Is it a gay bar? I suppose, but you are as likely to find a guy and girl kissing in some dark corner as two guys. Is it a dive? Sure, but in a way that only seems to it make it more comfortable. Is the crowd casual? Sure, but you'll also find club-goers dressed to the nines making a late night stop here. Music? You'll find everything from Joy Division to La Roux on the jukebox, and hear it all played. So if you don't judge and don't want to be judged you will fit right in here. The drinks are cheap, but well made. The crowd is eclectic and enthusiastic. Since this was featured as a ROTD on Halloween, I decided it was a sign. We headed out around midnight to check out The Grapevine. We weren't hunting for any super-ridiculous Halloween festivities, and just as I had hoped, we weren't the only ones not in costume. I was DD for the evening, so I like to think that my opinion of The Grapevine is unbiased (you know, free of influence...). My friends liked the drinks and liked the bartenders, although they said service was a little slow (then again, it WAS Halloween and the place was packed). I loved the basketball court. I really wanted to see the top deck, but it was locked off for the evening. :( Soooo, all-in-all, a fun place. Only 3 stars because second-hand smoke is one of my biggest pet peeves. I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. I've only been once or twice *snicker* but they seem to have the whole bar thing down. Ok, truth be told, I come here just about everyday. The bartenders are the best in the business, the drinks are cheap and strong, and the crowd is amazing. A lot of bars that you walk into, just have bad energy. You feel this weight on you and don't know why. This place is the complete opposite. When I'm having a bad day (lately it seems to be too many of those), all I have to do is come in here, and I immediately feel better. There is just such a great vibe to this place. I absolutely love the Grapevine Bar. It was my very first dive bar so it'll always hold that special place in my heart. Ordering at the bar proved to be a bit tedious as it was crowded and lines forming from the patio also. The friendly folks in line begin telling me about the drinks and how I would get messed up after two. I ordered a peach bellini, a pom pom to share with my husband and he ordered a targarita. We sat out on the patio near the basketball goal. The one thing that bothered me was the guy cleaning the tables. He dumped ashtrays no where near the trashcan so ashes went everywhere. Yeah these bad reviews I can confirm. Where do I begin? The bartender was rude to me and my friend group. Racist place for sure. It was 30 degrees out and we were seated near the entrance. An employee had the door open because the owner was "coming" like so what it's freezing and you can't even be considerate to close the damn door until she arrives? After a look of disgust and our request to please close the door. They refused to close the door and said to my husband "what are you still doing here?" This bar gives a chill Austin vibe to the otherwise hustle Dallas bar scenes down the street. You its a low key patio bar with a starter pool table in the middle (the have bumpers on the side to make the pool table). The crowd is very warm. The bartenders on the other hand very rude. so my first night here was a 5/5. great enough to where i brought friends and my gf with me. everything was fine until a bartender started being transphobic openly to a member of the group even after being asked multiple times to not draw attention to something clearly private. that person was then asked by management to leave for no reason other than calmly asking to not be addressed loudly by the wrong name. the waitress ignored something rhat was a simple correction and then threw a fit and ripped up and drew all over the receipt before the person could even sign for their tab. some of the bartenders are clearly phenomenal and some are clearly in seek of some assistance in basic humane accommodations. just be a nice person, this bar has great drinks and the environment is extremely fun. just a few bad staff apples. read more

We've all encountered it at one time or another. The place that makes the 5 Star Rating inadequate. Maybe great food, great service, a unique combination of the two. In any case, 5 Stars just doesn't seem to be enough. It seems right to include some sort of multiplier. The Grapevine Bar is my 5 Star Review buster. Either I have to go back to all of my other reviews and adjust them down or else figure out how to convey the idea that this place truly stands out by itself. I'm lazy, let me try the second method. First off, Yelp has this place in about 40 different categories. Dive Bar. Music Venue. Gay Bar. Seafood Restaurant. Gas Station. Health Club. Dance Club. Karaoke Bar. And a few that I'm sure I've missed. Now for the big reveal. It is all of those things. And much much more. I came for the Karaoke (recommended by a bartender at the stop before the Grapevine). There wasn't any Karaoke going on, nor any evidence that any ever has. And that was probably a good thing judging from the crowd. Being a stranger in a strange land, I made my way to what I figured to be the back of the bar....and was greeted by a doorway leading outside...and eventually to a basketball court! Yes. A real live regulation height glass backboard basketball court (half court to be precise). How cool is that? I sat in the corner for all of 2.7 seconds before one of what I figured to be a local sat down and struck up a conversation. As it turns out, he was from out of town as well. No matter, we explored the place together. I'll spare you the minute by minute details of the next few hours. Suffice it to say that it was non-stop conversation and laughter. And remember, I walked into this place by myself, not knowing a soul in the entire of Dallas. Looking for non-existent Karaoke. A beloved dive bar that has somehow eluded my grasp, visited with friends on a recent Sunday (busy!) and parked up on the roof top deck to chat with our frozen pom pom (when in Rome, right??)
