Being rocket scientists, we tested Grapevine Happy Hour. We took our bodies of knowledge here at Friday, 4:32 pm. Our systematic enterprise was to have a good time and digest cheap drinks while conducting predictions about the universe. We also like to make discoveries and found the best bartender in Dallas named John. John is like a porn star from outter space good bartender. He builds community with personal touches conversing with regulars and making virgins feel welcome. John quickly asked if it was our first time and gave us welcome drinks. After the first chemical reaction completed inside livers, we threw all laws of nature and rational thought out of the window and quit recording evidence. We were able to record, however: fun patio, session of basketball, brightly illuminated holiday lights, loose cannons, dirty jokes, smiles, nailing dance routines, and a marriage not yet consummated at the jukebox. Ooh, I bet you're wondering how I knew In the middle of what used to be Little Mexico is the Grapevine bar. Unassuming at first, it's probably one of the best melting pots in Dallas. Here you will find every color and orientation you can think of. The bar itself is a converted house with two large public rooms, each with its own charm. There is a huge patio out back, with a second bar and multiple tables. There is also a smaller one on the roof, for those days when you want to be above it all. Further back there's a basketball court, just in case you want to settle a score, like who pays the tab. The overall vibe is relaxed. It's a great place to unwind, meet with friends or get to know new ones. Parking is often difficult, so try to get here early or take a cab. Dive bar? Yes. So dark inside you can't see the floor? Yes, but probably for the best. A wonderful patio with the most fun people you will ever meet. You bet your sweet little tushy. There is no bar in the Dallas bar scene that can even come close in comparison to The Grapevine Bar. Not to say it's better than any bar or every other bar doesn't pale in comparison. It's just The Grapevine. In short, There's Something About The Grapevine. I small structure that marks the corner of Maple and Shelby Avenue can almost be overlooked if haven't had the best time of your life there before. Almost appearing out of place, the small red building that resembles an red dirt house one would find in the New Mexico landscape, only has a somewhat discreet neon sign to lure you in. If that doesn't lead you in - the sound of endless fun chatter, people singing along to the great 'bar' music, and hysterical stories being told will have you jumping over the fence. On a beautiful Spring day like today, the place is packed by 3:00 PM, so snag a table early and let the foolishness unfold. The basketball court becomes an arena of mingling and memory making. At the front bar, my friend forgot to tip for our two beers because we were talking and she was distracted. As we thanked the bartenders for the beers, the large older gentleman with long salt/pepper hair said, "Gee, thanks for nothing. Thanks a lot! We should have just let yall go to the patio!" He muttered some other things but by that point I had apologized and said that my friend didn't realize she hadn't tipped because we were talking. I then tried to hand him $2 (for our two beers) and he motioned for me to put it in the tip jar as he said, "Tips go in the jar!" We were appalled by this as it was an honest mistake that we corrected and he was still an ass. Also, I'd like to bring to your attention that the bathrooms were repulsive even for 3rd world country standards. Will not be going back. read more

The Grapevine Bar is as good as it gets for what you see type place. This place has multiple bar areas to make it easier to get your drink. Nothing fancy, not a cocktail bar. We came at night and there was hardly any crowd, then again, it was also a cold thanksgiving week type night. The inside area is dark and seedy, with shades of red. The back area is an open area with a basketball court. That is not what you expect to see in a bar. No one was playing, but it looked ready to be used. Also from outside, you can climb the stairs to a outdoor second floor patio; a great little nook to hang in peace with friend and enjoy your drinks. Could also be a great place when a bit warmer out! I am just visiting, not a Dallas native, so was only here once, but I always find I enjoy mostly the divey bars in NYC cause the crowd is pretty chill and drinks are served pretty quickly as there is nothing fancy. Most people get a beer or a vodka soda. Though I love a good margarita, you can tell this is not the type of place you should order one from. I ordered the frozen drinks, and well, watery and sugary is the way to describe it. I would have given it a 4 stars for being the embodiment of laid back and dive, but as we exited we saw the bouncer eating pizza and joked about wanting a slice and he became incredibly angry for no reason and offered to punch my glasses in. Well, not exactly the reaction we were expecting for complimenting the fact that the pizza smelled great. That said, we walked away with a very bad experience form what seemed to be quite the chill night. My suggestion put a nozzle on the bouncer, that type of people are what keep costumers from coming back. Not sure if he had a bad day or was just two pumped on steroids, but his attitude and comments were definitely uncalled for. Hopefully, me next visit will be better. You should bring someone you have been dating a while here, not a first, second or third date type place, you can be a bit classier than that! read more

I almost smacked myself straight in the face when I realized I hadn't reviewed the Grapevine. I literally tell everyone I know about this place. WTF, self? Word of mouth all over the place and no Yelp-o-riffic love? Tsk tsk. This place is a little bittersweet for me because it used to be me and my BFF's spot for happy hour after an excruciating workday. Or a celebration spot for a great workday. Or a "we're bored, let's go to the Grapevine" kind of day. Needless to say, we went there a lot. Sadly, he up and left me to move to stupid California and I was left here with my favorite after-work spot and no after-work BFF to share it with *sigh*. Fortunately my personal problems have no effect on the fabulousness of this place! The drinks are super stiff--I would go out on a limb and say nearly as stiff as the Loon. And that's saying something. I would recommend getting liquor or frozen drinks...they have beer, but this just isn't really a beer and wine kinda place. I think out of the billion times I've been here we've sat inside once or twice, and that's only because it was raining. The patio is adorable, they have twinkle lights everywhere and a bunch of fab-tastic singalong tunes coming from the jukebox. The bartenders ROCK. The happy hour special is $2 EVERYTHING (i think martinis might be $3) until 7pm, every day of the week. On Monday/Tues, it only goes up to $3 after. I would keep going but if I keep gushing about how great it is you'll go there and I won't be able to find a seat. Oh The Grapevine....you are such a dive bar icon in Dallas. You can always on count on being welcomed by 80s synth-pop from the MP3 jukebox and wild patrons. While overwhelmingly most of my friends and fellow Yelpers are fans of The Grapevine, I have mixed feelings about this place. The Grapevine meets all the standard requirements for your run-of-the-mill dive bar: eclectic patrons, cheap drinks, low attitude, and filthy bathrooms. I think the only thing missing is mildew scented carpet. The best thing about the Grapevine is you can always count on a relaxed place to hang out with friends for a cheap drink. Their rooftop patio is my favorite spot in the place although I wish it was bigger. It can sometimes be a challenge to snag a seat up there. On the down side, The Grapevine disappoints me in some aspects. First of all, as nice as the servers are on the patio, you're better off getting a drink at the bar. On the last visit, drinks were forgotten, never served, and credit cards missing. This is a tad frustrating to say the least. In addition, The Grapevine is the number one spot in Dallas to get into an argument with a wide-set woman in the restroom line. No joke, this has happened repeatedly. A few of the patrons here could use a Tangarita intervention in the parking lot. Dive bars aren't necessarily my go-to kind of place but there are a few I hold in high regard. However, I still visit from time to time as many friends do enjoy this bar and it's a very vibrant, easy-going bar. So while I'm not planning my next corporate event at The Grapevine, I'm sure I'll be back again and again. read more

Oh, Grapevine, you've changed my mind. Last time I visited (2 years ago??) I had 2 too many of those everclear Bellini's and thought going into the bathroom with someone else was a good idea. The sign on the outside of the door clearly states "ONE AT A TIME", but I wasn't into reading at that time of night. So I got "told" a little for that and haven't had the chance to go back, still 50/50 about the place. I was there last week and I had really forgot how cool the vibe is. There is such a variety of people, the bar staff is really cool, lots of cool places to sit (inside, outside, in the bar, at the bar, in the pool room) and you can even play basketball out back. I'm puttin' Grapevine back on rotation. Oh, and the everclear Bellini's ($2 for a small) are STILL good and STILL strong. Makes ya wanna get up and shake yo rump! Three things are always certain when I visit the Grapevine: 1. I will run into someone I know. 2. Someone I don't know will strike up a funny conversation with me while I'm waiting at the bar for a drink. 3. A gay man I've never met will spontaneously tell me I am gorgeous. Hooray! The Grapevine provides for fellowship, interesting conversations, and inflating my ego! I love this place. I think I have more fond memories of the Grapevine than any other establishment. The patio is the place to be. You can chill in the semi-covered area, on the basketball court, or on the rooftop deck with a great view of downtown. Everyone who works at the Grapevine kicks ass! I have been coming here for eight years, and most of the people who currently work there have been there as long as I can remember. That is a sign of a good employer. They seem to have a good time at work together; I even randomly saw them out together last week at the State Fair. Great drink specials, great jukebox, great fun, even a Playstation (or something like that) await you at the Grapevine. Just don't wait til the last minute to decide to go potty. After years of hearing Grapevine lore, I finally made it to this infamous Dallas bar, and I must say - it did not disappoint. This is dive bar in the nexus of the Oak Lawn and Design District neighborhoods with Turtle Creek just a skip-hop away, but it doesn't necessarily feel like it. Honestly, the vibe is hard to pinpoint: it's very Dallas without being like Dallas at all. It defies definition, or maybe that's the Grapevine's $4 sangria's talking. Yes. I said $4 sangria. It came in a big glass and was savory on a hot evening. There are fabulously cheap drinks at this bar. The deck on the roof is amazing. It felt a bit like being in a tree-house over a busy street. Actually, the entire bar is a bit like a tree-house, but with a bad-ass patio, and a bunch of Peter Pans and grown-up kids. All it really needs is a big sign above the door that says "No Douchebags Allowed". Great little bar. Methinks I may have a new hangout. read more

This means $3 wicked strong Everclear bellinis and other crazy-ass sugary drinks that'll throw you on your ass faster than you can say "Aunt Charlie." And $2 Shiner. The bathrooms are unisex and have black toilets. There is one pool table and a juke box. There is tons of outdoor seating and a freakin' basketball hoop complete with a basketball (if you can find it). This means you can watch drunk people stumble around and play HORSE. Sad. Yet entertaining. There is a top roof patio which is amazing in the summer. You can get shit-faced here and no one will judge you. A bar that takes all kinds. Katie took me to Grapevine Bar for my birthday extravaganza before she headed off to stupid Turkey for a year. We had an awesome time! We drank awesome shooters and listened to awesome music and then just sat around and soaked up each others awesomeness. (Yes, Mean Grils was on this weekend.) If I were going to give birth to a bar--this would be it. The lights are funky! The chairs are comfy! The drinks are strong and tasty! The folks are a lot of fun. People we'd never met before asked us to join their birthday party, and yes, there was cake. The staff takes care of my every need. And the drink specials are priced to sell. And as if that's not enough the place has a super cute patio. In Dallas, we have a lot of days that will place you on a patio, not so much July and August but I've been known to enjoy some 70 degree weather on a patio in July. This July specifically. read more

I had no problem with the servers at the Grapevine...they were all quick and courteous. This bar is eclectic...gay, straight, not quite sure...they are all here...and they are all FAB!! The jukebox is 100% gay fantastic (not my words, my friends). I had a kick ass time! We were there with a straight dude in from out of town for a wedding and he loved it as well....it is truly come as you are and do your own thing, and have a drink and chill the hell out!! At first glance this appears to be a dive bar but it's more of a gay friendly, hipster bar with a huge patio and a basketball court. This bar could in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and not at all be out of place. It's like a little bit of Brooklyn in Dallas or if you prefer, a bit of blue in red. When my friends and I entered here, we fell upon a tiny room with a small but cute bar and a juke box playing Bon Jovi. I wanted Bulleit Rye but they didn't have it so they hooked me up with some other premium rye which was very smooth. The name escapes me. After we got our drinks, we made our way further inside. There was an even smaller room with a pool table. Pretty much the entire room was the pool table but nobody was playing. I think this is the first time I've seen a bar with a pool table where nobody used the pool table. Beyond the small pool table room, we were greeted with a much bigger space that opens up to the patio. There were many chairs and tables here including heated lamps to keep us warm on a fairly cold night. Definitely a nice hang out spot. A couple of people were playing basketball in the back but most were just chilling. Being straight and very unhipsterish - we didn't dig the scene too much but I definitely appreciated how unpretentious it was. The space was nice, the drinks were cheap and bartender seemed like a good guy. We left after a couple of drinks but not before he spooked my friend with a plastic spider. I love this bar, from the moment I walked in I felt like this was a place where I would want to be a regular plus the drinks are cheap and strong. I love the backyard complete with a basketball hoop. I have had many the memorable encounter at those circle tables in the back. Lori is a true gem of Dallas- she's the cocktail waitress who doesn't take any crap and also is speedy and always accurate with the drink orders. Many evenings at the Lawn began here, and many Sunday Fun Days have apparently ended here. :-) Wow, I want to kick myself in the butt because I never knew about their bellinis until reading the reviews here on Yelp! All I can say is, I drank many a stiff drink here, at a reasonable price, with awesome company. Don't know what else I can say that hasn't been said before. It is true, leave your attitude at the door, as this is so not the place to "post up" with pretentions. It is a crowd of mainly gay and straight folks. I have always met new people here, always had a good time. You'll see people come in casual clothes and play basketball, or you'll even see the cute club chicks all donned in their stilletos ready to hit up Uptown. It's just a free for all here, really. I came here with my friend last Saturday night while I was in Dallas for a visit. She had not been here before, so neither one of us knew what to expect. We actually intended to just stop in for a drink before moving on to somewhere else, but we ended up staying here for the remainder of the night because we were having a blast. The space itself is great. Plenty of room to hang out indoors, but the star is the giant patio in the back. There were plenty of tables and everybody seemed to be totally cool and friendly. I don't think you could really pin down the demographic of the crowd as it was truly all over the place. We had some really hilarious conversations with complete strangers. I would take this over a stuffy, pretentious crowd any day! There is also a basketball hoop, which struck us as odd, but it's a unique feature and it was amusing to watch people play. Watch out for the flying balls! Drinks are pretty cheap, and I mean it when I say they have a strong pour. We were warned of this earlier in the night by the person who recommended that we go. Unfortunately I was celebrating my birthday and didn't take this advice; I definitely paid the price later on... but oh well, it made for a memorable night (or, more accurately, a not-so-memorable night)! The Grapevine Bar has an eclectic mix of equal parts hetero and homo clientele. There is a great jukebox and a large patio that actually has a basketball hoop -- and room to play! Also, a little upstairs balcony. The actual inside is tiny, tiny, TINY! Be prepared to move outside right after you get your drinks. The few seats they have against the wall run out quickly and aren't very comfortable. They have the most shitty locations for their bathrooms because they cause the entire front part of the bar to become a waiting line for the two single person "one-at-a-time" (as the sign says) toilets. The one-at-a-time rule is a big deal. Sorry gay dudes and club chicks, no two-at-a-time key-bumpers in the bathroom! They call you out instantly if you even try it! Embarrassing. The Grapevine is a great place to come when you want to leave douchey Dallas behind you. Of course, you'll be trading it for gay/tranny Dallas. But it really doesn't matter which sex you're into here -- just so long as you like good, danceable music and fun, boisterous people. The only downside to Grapevine Bar is the terrible, pothole-laden parking lot and the fact that I can't ever seem to leave that place sober. The mood at Grapevine Bar is what separates it from other places. I think It's a good place to take a first date -- it shows them that you are open-minded and have enough independent thought to not give in to the uptown scene. Then head for some all night dancing at club S4. Now THAT place is a gay dance club. Gay, gay, gay. But I love to take my girl there. If you're a couple that loves to dance, it's a great place to go -- they take the lights and sound seriously, plus you don't have to worry about leaving your woman alone for a second while you go grab drinks like you do at any of the normal Dallas meat markets. Where else can you go and be with your gays, your straights (both the ladies and the straight boys), and start a little game of H.O.R.S.E. on the basketball court outside with your one of your best girl friends in her red stilettos? None other than the Grapevine Bar off Maple. Here nice looking men gather with good friends to just have a good time. I wouldn't call it a meat market like most of your Cedar Springs hang outs but I will say I find myself wanting to go for some USDA prime filets hanging out on that patio. I'd say you can expect 70% gay 30% straight. Top it all off you can drink on the cheap and sit out on their GIANT patio. Now on those hot Texas days or nights be prepared and leave the jeans at home cause it can get HOT and the patio is where it's at, the inside is extremely small. Oh and btw, Sunday they have an amazing Bellini, with EVERCLEAR -- um HELL YES! Dallas Dbags, just steer clear cause the crowd here is chill and friendly. I come here on occasion with friends when somehow The Grapevine Bar gets brought up in conversation during cocktails at brunch. Then of course someone says "I haven't been there in years!" To which you dumbly reply "Let's go!!" And that's exactly how it happened... We parked in a very crowded parking lot meaning they are busy inside which is good. The parking lot is actually just one huge pot hole. Note to self: do not bring nice car. This bar isn't your typical Dallas bar. It's dirty, the restrooms are disgusting, there are random broken couches placed throughout and a pool table in a space so tiny that you can't even play pool. The outside patio contains another bar that they hardly use, a basketball court that is really cool, and patio furniture placed throughout. There is also an upstairs patio which is great on a nice day out like yesterday. However, I did notice they had the patio tables bolted to the ground which is odd. The drinks are way expensive for a dump like this place. $11 got me two draft beers. They both came in different glasses so the sizing/portions are not consistent. Great little bar. I too must admit to the greatness of the everclear bellinis(but I go for the large 5.00 size) and they will give a good pour on all the drinks. Although watching the basketball is fun I highly recommend you try the rooftop patio-it is generally not crowded with a great breeze. You can still hear the music from the juke box but this area lends itself to conversation much more easily than the rest of the bar. Word of warning-as cool as the bartenders are when it is closing time they mean business. I don't know that I have ever seen a bar get cleaned out as quick as this place. That's OK- after several of these bellinis it is probably time to head home anyway! read more

First of all, let me say that I am a proper Dallas-ite girl (even though I really live in Fort Worth). You know the type, I shop at North Park and Highland Park Village. I love polos and skinny jeans, etc. ;) . . . but I love the Grapevine and I don't even drink! The drinks are always cheap even the alcoholic ones. Um... at least for me and the hubby. The bartenders are always generous with their liquor much to my husband's delight and my chagrin. Their bellinis are fabulous and not just because they have a ton of alcohol in them. Their music is from a jukebox which to me is the best type of music. Though it has a hapzard way of changing from Madonna to some rock band from song to song but that is what I love about it. You have random people dancing in place, including me (because there is no room really) all over the place. They have a pool table in one of the rooms which if that is the room you and your girlfriends decide to chill leads to a lot of "Excuse my stick" and other improper and funny (at the time) innuendos. The furniture all looks like they were bought at garage sales (they probably were) and yes, there are only two restrooms. But the bouncers don't blink an eye if you go outside and puke in the bushes (*ahem* says a friend, of course) The patio is awesome (when it is warm outside but Dallas has no reason to complain. It is warm 7/8 of the year). You have couples necking on the benches, boys trying to play basketball (trying is the key word. Apparently being drunk inhibits your capabilities). Just gravel in some places so ladies, leave your fancy stilletos behind (unless you WANT the heel all dinged up). You have gays, you have straights, you have SMU girls, and boys who have not wash in weeks. I always have a cutie (sadly) gay guy tell me I am fabulous. And a girl (unfortunately) gay tell me I am gorgeous but when they start telling me my (nonexistant) boobs look good that is when I know they are lying. The grapevine is a tiny bar in Dallas just on the outskirts of both little mexico, cedar springs, downtown, and respectability. It's a little place next to the Observer's office building near maple and oak lawn. When you walk in you'll notice a few things- disco lights, a wall mounted jukebox, and an incredible variety of people. You should know that the Grapevine is a gayish bar and if you're a guy you'll probably be hit on, or in my case, spanked by the latina transvestite(!). There's a pool table, a basketball court out back, and plenty of extremely strong drinks. Did I mention extremely strong drinks? Happy hour gets you a double for $4, which is essentially a large glass of pure alcohol. They also have free snack mix, and on random days people will just order pizza for the whole bar. They have lots of events like Suckfest (crawfish boil) and parties for all the holidays. It's a nice low-key place for an after work happy hour, or for a late night nightcap. read more

This perhaps has to be one of the most interesting bars Ive ever been too. Something I would expect to see in San Francisco, Austin or even Montreal. I must admit, your typical average Dallas patron doesnt come here. And if you havent been here before, your up for a treat! This bars attracts all types of bars and that is completely ok with me. You meet more real people and people that arent afraid to express their inner souls. Do you remember when you just turned 21 and went to bars and have a blast and couldnt pin it but it was the greatest time in the world and loved everyone around you and was perhaps the best experience you ever had. Then realized it was just the alcohol talking? Well minus the alcohol feeling, this place is like that! Its friendly, its small and rusty just how I like my bars. Its always keeps me intrigued and coming back for more. Granted I havent been here in a while, but my friends tell me it hasn't changed one bit! I have been here several times and ended up at home with the feeling.. OMG what happened last night.. Did I really have that much fun? Or did my friend really make out with those females and I ended up with them on top of some random after hours condo down town Dallas with people I dont know or just met that night? YES SIR! So come here knowing you are going to be accepted by a huge family of people and everyone has open arms for you. This is a great local dive bar with great drinks. They have really good frozen drinks to quench your thirst on a hot Dallas day. We came by for happy hour on a Sunday, which is 8pm to close. The frozen drinks are $4.50 instead of $6.50. The outside patio is relaxing and feels like someone's backyard. There's a basketball hoop if you feel like shooting some hoops, and there's also an small rooftop deck. Everything is great except the smell of the bathroom inside. With the place being so small, it does smell pretty nasty inside. The drinks and outside space definitely makes up for the smell. read more

This is my favorite bar in Dallas. They have great bartenders who know their stuff and love to welcome new people. The drinks are reasonably priced and feature happy hour specials. Folks load up the juke box, play billiards, and shoot hoops. You'll have a good time, bring a friend! read more
