This is my second visit to greasy spoon and disappointed both times. On this visit I arrived at 5:45 and found out upon arrival that they will be closing at 6. So that meant that nothing but the steam table would be available. I drove 25 minutes to buy something that I did not want. We were not greeted until we got to the counter and all she said was yes sir, yes ma'am. Now let's talk about the cold oxtails. Firstly they were huge like XL and cold. The young lady serving us was impatient and clearly annoyed that there was still a line so close to closing time, that nobody knew about prior to arriving. The oxtails were overcooked and despite the gravy- chewy and dry. We gotta do better, and this is no pitch for a freebie, we politely decline any free offers. read more

Very nice place for good southern food. I order from here often. I LLOOVEEE the macaroni, baked chicken, rice , and cornbread. I've tried the baked fish and their corn before and it was good as well. I've never had oxtails but I'm sure my first try will be from the Greasy Spoon. Ohhhh and I love the dj! He's such a nice guy and always give shoutouts to you whether near or far! I came in a couple minutes before closing and was very disappointed and I had high hopes for this place but I won't be back. First to begin the food is bland and customer service can be a lot better. I ordered the oxtail plate with the yams and cabbage. The oxtails had no meat on them nothing but fat and the gravy tasted like canned gravy. The cabbage was alright but instead of the sugar tastes I would like some type of seasoning. And we should not be calling them candied yams cause it's no cinnamon just blend should just call them carrot. Wouldn't be back highly unsatisfied. read more

I came here twice to pick up a order and the workers in the front were so RUDE. It happened before and I wanted it to slide, but it's time to get better service. I have ate here at this location a few times and each time the food was amazing. Recently I went to get food and the fried chicken was dark as if it were fried in old grease. The mac'n' cheese was not creamy as it would usually be, it was very dry and it has never been like that. The cabbage was not as tasty as it normally would have been. I have ate this combination on several visits. I just hope this pattern doesn't continue because I have told so many people how good the food is, but this time it was disappointing. read more

Oh my gravy! So everything is great. I got the herb chicken with yams and the Mac n cheese. My husband got the ox tail with greens and Mac n cheese. And the boudin egg rolls. I have tried this place 3 times and I can say some items are better than others. When it comes to soul food, everyone's "big mama's" cooking is different and what y'all like may not be good to others. Oxtails were tender and good but I couldn't get past the premade gravy that seems to be used on other items. Cabbage is a preference thing. It is more on the sweeter side than I like, but they are tender and not over cooked. The two times I have tried the yams, they were decent. Mac and cheese...there had to be two different cooks. The first time I went, it was soupy and no flavor. However, the second time was much better and you could definitely taste the cheese in it. (Better consistency, too!) Cornbread was on the drier side (the two times I had it). Nothing to write home about. Standard cornbread. Fried fish and shrimp were great! Nicely seasoned but like any other fried item, they need to be eaten immediately to get the right taste. And finally, the egg rolls are to die for. I love them both (boudain with cheese & greens with turkey). Looking forward to trying other items and expanding my review. I am for honesty but postivity. read more

We stopped here after flying into IAH, on our way to visit family. Excellent food -- my son got the smoked oxtail (Thursday special), I had the smothered pork chop. Wife and daughter did collections of side dishes, all of which were awesome -- cabbage, collard greens, black eyed peas, yams and of course mac-n-cheese. Southern comfort food at its finest is all I can say. I got the blackened fish with Mac and cheese and cabbage. Let me start with the fish, it literally melted in my mouth. The white wine sauce it was in was like a little piece of Heaven. It was also on a bed of rice that paired well. The Mac was thick and decadent, the cabbage was amazing. I was hungover and looking for good food. To my surprise it was only 10 min away. Upon arrival there is a dj outside playing music and walking you in. That was a nice touch. The inside was small but I liked the fact that you got to stand in line and order the food and get it then and there. I ordered oxtails, garlic potatoes and greens. The oxtails were really good but the greens were a tad salty and the garlic potatoes tasted like potato salad. All it was missing was sweet relish But all and all I had a great experience. Line was longggg (means food was overal A1). restaurant was too small and had to play "search n take" for a open table. GREAT BLACK OWNED BUSINESS. the wait to get in line was about 20-25 minutes which i was expecting way more. . we were told to wait in our cars as they moved the line quickly. once they texted us we went inside and were appropriately socially distanced. i ordered chop steak/greens/black eyed peas (9/10). my friend ordered the chicken & waffles (this was actually another reason for the 5 star rating) .. it was after brunch hours and they still honored her order due to the wait and her food was made to order & out within 15 minutes. everyone was so attentive to our needs and made sure our experience was safe & quick! read more

Everything my wife and I tried was good. She tried the smoked oxtails and I had the smothered oxtails. Yooooo the smoked was the first time I've ever had oxtails like that and you must try. The smothered were falling off the bone so I wasn't disappointed and the gravy wasn't too thick just right. Both had amazing flavors! My two sides were collard greens and Mac and cheese both bomb.com. My wife had the yams and mac and cheese and just know I helped her finish those yams. Very good! Desert you ask? Yep we tried the peach cobbler and that was finger licking good. I swear houston is the only place you can find a good ass restaurant like this that's connected to a gas station #respectfully You gotta love it lol. Came across this restaurant after seeing the owner post in a Facebook group for Black Owned Restaurants. Usually not one to try soul food restaurants as some of the best soul food comes out of my kitchen. However, after seeing how generous the owner was and what he was doing in the community I decided to stop by. So glad I did! Came in with my sister and we were looking over the menu when a worker came to ask if we had any cooked to order items that weren't on the steam table for the kitchen to start prepping. I was sold at that point, we went a bit crazy on the ordering to get 3 boudain eggrolls, fried chicken plate, fried catfish plate, fried peach cobbler, & a Hennessy zing wing basket for our trip back home since we don't live close. Most of your traditional soul food sides such as macaroni, greens, cabbage, yams, mashed potatoes, corn, etc. were on the steam table. We opted for the cabbage, yams, corn, & mac. The yams were a little less sweet than I would like and I mean off by a few sprinkles of brown sugar or cinnamon; the cabbage had no flavor which was a downside; but I did like the mac. Next time I'll be trying something else. The chicken was drumettes and we were expecting fried chicken pieces the fried fish was good I could taste the seasoning/hot sauce, but wasn't overbearing. Those Hennessy zing wings were something else and didn't stand a chance next time I will likely be getting those and boudain eggrolls with that TGS sauce! A friendly staff and excellent customer service goes a LONG way, so will make the drive back based off that alone. read more
