The Greek is one of my favorite restaurants in State College and made me realize I love Greek food. The Kalamari Skaras is the best kalamari I've ever had; it even comes with pitas which are perfect for dipping in the leftover olive oil. My favorite entrée is the Traditional Platter which offers a generous portion of delicious pork, fries, pitas, and tzatziki. The best meal I had while in State College. So good, I had it 2x! A dear friend hadn't had access to Greek food in years, and given it was her favorite we had to come here. Every bit as good as any Greek spot in NYC. Gyro, Village Salad, Zucchini Fritters, Chicken Kebab and Tzatziki all top notch RE flavor. Only reason to rate a 4 instead of 5 stars is: 1) the chicken kebab is a very small portion and 2) the meal was noticeable better at the restaurant than when delivered. read more

Good Greek food and clearly a local favorite given how busy they are each time I've visited. The lamb is good, the chicken is on par, and the place it clean with nice waitstaff. My goodness! The Greek is amazing. Was absolutely craving this meal and it hit the spot. 100%! I loved the platter. The serving sizes are just right and filling. We did pickup and the food was great by the time we got home and settled. You must have the baklava cheesecake and the tiramisu is a cloud of heaven. My boyfriend was happy with his meal and helped me with mine. We both were super pleased with our meal and he said inside the restaurant looks nice. Highly recommend. A few friends and I stopped by for some take out on a weeknight. I ordered the Gyro platter, which was sliced gyro meat, pita triangles, sliced onion and tomato with fries and tzatziki on the side. I was a little thrown off since I thought the gyro would be "put together" already. It was still pretty good. My friend enjoyed her chicken skewer and salad. It's a really cute little restaurant with Greek inspired decor. There is seating upstairs and downstairs - they really made use of their space! Staff was friendly. read more

We took our daughter, a PSU student, to dinner at The Greek. Our reservations were for a Friday night, and we were promptly seated upstairs. Keep in mind, the restaurant is BYOB. Had we known this (it was impossible to figure this out from reviews and their website), we would have brought our own wine. Nevertheless, we each ordered a glass of local wine which was reasonably priced but just okay. Our food, however, was delicious. We started with the chicken avgolemono soup (my daughter even ordered one to go) and enjoyed a variety of dips along with a mountain of pita. They were all delicious. We had a nice time as our extended family enjoyed their time tasting all types of cuisine samples. We dined here tonight without a reservation. We were seated in 15 minutes. We sat upstairs and had a very nice waitress. We ordered the vegetarian plate, beef & lamb gyro plate and Greek French fries. The fries came out first as an appetizer, they were pre-battered fries and they added some Greek seasoning to the potatoes. They were not special and not seasoned enough. They were hot and the portion size was good but at Greek restaurant I would expect fresh cut potato fries cooked in olive oil with seasoning. The vegetarian plate was very good and they provided extra pita bread. The bread was soft and warm. Decent portion size. The beef/lamb gyros plate was cold and need to be sent back. They provided another order quickly and took the price off our bill. In addition, they gave us a free baklava dessert ( more on that later). Once the hot meal came, it was good. Overall the seasoning of the food was good and flavorful. The baklava tasted it homemade and was a large piece of honey deliciousness. The establishment fixed their errors and I appreciate that. If you are expecting authentic Greek food, this place is close. read more

Went here a few weeks ago and I'm still thinking about how good it was. This is definitely a gem in State College. My boyfriend and I came here for our anniversary dinner and got the dolmades, halloumi fries and spanakopita, I would recommend all of those. A gem of a place. Food and service were both excellent. We had the grilled calamari, trio of dips, classic salad, and chicken. Everything was fresh and delicious, with big portions. Our server was extremely attentive and friendly, more than most restaurants I've been to. Price point was very reasonable and it is BYOB with no corkage fee. The upstairs ambience is lovely. A hidden gem in Happy Valley! The Greek is tucked behind Waffle House and opens up into a huge restaurant that is completely Greek inspired in decor and delicious food. We had a variety and nothing disappointed. My favorite was the dip sampler and the stuffed grape leaves but the gyro was also very good. Gabi was our waitress and she was very knowledgeable about the menu and very attentive. They have a range of food options at all price points but you could easily have a very affordable nice night out. There is lots of seating and a very affordable drink menu (a bottle of wine for $14) to choose from. A great option for sit down dining or take out. read more

First time dining at The Greek. Made a reservation since it was move in weekend and I knew everywhere would be packed. Seated very quickly and had some great appetizers. Tzatziki/pita and tomato basil soup - both very good. I was surprised that they didn't have traditional hummus. For dinner, we shared a veggie gyro and specialty greek pasta. Both were very good, but the specialty greek pasta didn't necessarily seem special, but definitely not bad. The salad that came with the entree was excellent - not sure where they get those great tomatoes, but it was really good. It was a lot of food, but overall very good. I would definitely go back. I liked the upstairs area - lots a space and didn't feel on top of other tables. Service was very good too. I would recommend. read more

Food quality Down - Prices Up. Used to love The Greek. Did mostly take-out, but quite often. Something has changed (maybe the chef) ? Gyros and Pita w/dip or dolmades are still good and relatively affordable. However, Platters and some dishes have become ridiculously over-priced with portions getting smaller. Fried calamari appetizer was $18.99, over cooked, and the portion was 1/3 less than a typical appetizer. The Orzo used to have a great smoky flavor but now is dry and uninteresting. My wife ordered the shrimp kebab platter; it had 8 1/2 medium/small shrimp for $28, and they were tough. The food quality has definitely fallen and the prices have risen. We will still order from there once in a while, but now it will be just gyros, pita, and dip. It's a shame because they used to be a great option for a much broader selection of menu items. read more

Great food!! Highly recommend! The kolokithokeftedes (eggplant fritters) were incredible as was the melinzana salata (eggplant spread)! This place rivals my moms home made Greek cooking! I went with a group of 7 people and they were all impressed by their meals. Our server, Chase, was great. He took all of our orders in a timely manner and everything was accurate. Okay so my friends raved about this place but sadly I was not impressed. I ordered the gyro, one of my favorite dishes, and it was one of the most uneventful Gyros I've ever had. It was seriously lacking on the tzakiti, the meat was dry and overall flavorless. We ordered the tiramisu which was really lacking the the chocolate espresso flavor. Mediokritos. That's Greek for mediocre. Nice decor, but when it comes to American Greek food, this was a miss. I got the gryos platter with a salad, which was a $2 up-charge because I didn't want fries. It would have blown my mind if they had offered rice pilaf as a substitute...oh well. For some reason the meat was all chopped up into little confetti pieces. Is this for old people? Did I not look like I could chew my own food?! So ODD. Well, the meat was dry, and chared from over grilling. I noted the uniformity of the confetti-meat that suggested it was frozen, and it tasted that way as well.. It came also with toasted pita wedges. The receive one bonus point for the tzatziki sauce, which was fresh, modestly seasoned, and creamy. She got the moussaka, which tasted pretty OK, but we've had WAY better in many other restaurants. It needed more potatoes for one thing. And the other? They need to nix the tomatoes slices that seemed to be layered in it, because it didn't add to the flavor much at all. Less important but notable, was the price for this entree. Our waitress was less than attentive, never asked if we wanted coffee or desert, and we had to flag her down for the receipt as she kept averting her eyes to us. I ordered online, totally not a fan of asking for a tip when they're not even delivering the food to me, not serving or clearing plates. The food was just OK, but the sauces were good. I recommend the platter with four sauces and warm pita bread. The Gyro was just OK. Lots of meat, but strikingly little flavor. The toppings, onion, and tomato were so far down at the bottom of the pita that I couldn't really taste it throughout the sandwich, if that makes sense. One of the things on the menu is two, basically, meatballs in tomato sauce. I've posted a picture of that. For nine dollars you expect a little more on the plate. I won't be going back. read more

The Greek can be easily missed at first when driving as they do not have a sign out-front. Hours are also a little odd as they only are open in the evening. Parking is not an issue as they share a lot with The Original Waffle Shop North. Greek has both an upstairs and downstairs with seating. Decor is also nice with a lovely and detailed ceiling painting. The menu has a nice selection of items, but I knew what I wanted to order immediately, and that was Gyro. I went with the Beef-lamb Gyro sandwich while my friend ordered the platter. Service was good and the orders arrived quickly. My Gyro was tasty and the sauce they use is not overpowering, but it didn't come with enough of the tasty fries. The platter was large, comes with more fries, the meat/pita sliced up, and you assemble it yourself. The only downside to our meal was the soda mixture wasn't good. Overall, the Gyro's were good, my experience was positive, and I'll be returning. read more

Such delicious take out! While in State College visiting my BFF, we did a lot of freezer cooking, so the last thing we wanted to do for dinner was cook some more. I searched the Yelp app for take out, and found the Greek. I called in the order, then drove to pick it up 15 minutes later. This place is a little off the road, so it could be hard to find at night. You turn into the parking lot and enter from the bottom floor. The place has a little nicer decor than I expected. The employees are in dressy casual, there's a lot of faux marbling. You order at the counter, then grab your drinks and silverware and head to seats. My take out order was already packaged and waiting. They just scanned my card and sent me on my way. The food smelled so good that I had to fight temptation not to dig into the pita while on the drive home. We'd ordered the Horiatiki (Village Salad), Trio of Dips (melitzano salata, hummus, tzatziki), Keftedes, and Moussaka. The dips were SO good. The Melitzano Salata (eggplant and garlic) was so incredibly flavorful. The tzatziki was the best I'd had in a long time - tangy from yogurt but fresh from the cucumbers. The hummus was creamy and smooth. I could've made a meal off the dips and pitas alone. Every bite I tried was my favorite. The Moussaka wasn't as dense and heavy as some make it - so you felt satisfied, not overly full. The Keftedes were perfectly seasoned, and the fries with them were particularly good with the tzatziki. The Horiatiki had fresh vegetables, tasty olives, and the perfectly firmly crumbly block of feta atop that I remember from the presentations in Greece. The portions were smaller than I expected for the prices, particularly in a college town. But everything was so flavorful and fresh, and they used high-quality plastic containers that could easily be reused for household food storage. Give it a try! read more
