My husband and I used to frequent Penn Kebab when we attended PSU as students in 2013/2014. We've come up to visit a handful of times in the past ten years always delighted to see it is still open. We ordered from there today and it was just as good as we remember. I had the falafel wrap and he had the combo wrap, our usuals and as tasty as ever. Another addition to what I like to irreverently call Happy Valley's very own "Arab spring" that's been happening in the last few months -- thankfully a non-violent, culinary type of spring.... and, of course, not exclusively Arabic. State College has finally branched out from Yet Another Predictable "Asian" Place with a number of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern eateries such as The Greek, Pita Cabana with its two locations offering Lebanese cuisine -- and now this delightful take-out kebab place run by two very friendly Turkish guys. The chicken kebab looks fab, tho I unfortunately wasn't hungry enough to try one this time around (given the incredibly large portion, I'm not sure whether I'll *ever* be hungry enuff to polish off one of those suckers all by myself. Seriously -- the kebab sandwiches are bigger than your head. I opted instead for lahmaçun aka Turkish pizza: a freshly (!!) baked flatbread topped with seasoned beef, then baked briefly in the oven, and finally topped with various green and cold stuff of your choice - feta, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, cukes, etc. I'm a gal of simple delights, so just lettuce & tomatoes were fine for me, with a good sploosh of garlicky yogurt sauce and (not quite enough) hot stuff. I'll need to tell them to crank it up a bit next time. Penn Kebab, like Pita Cabana, sells delicious bottled ayran which really is the perfect drink for this kind of food. Happiness. I picked the place based on the yelp reviews but it seems like the place may have been better before. I got a text my order (simple falafel plate) was ready 30 min after I placed it. I got to the place to pick it up, he just started the order (so it wasn't ready!) I waited for another 15 min until he got it done. And frankly neither the falafels nor the French fries tasted good. Sigh.....I really like kebabs and shawarma. Throughout my life, I've had tons and tons of gyros and greek spots, kebabs and various Afghan restaurants, and shawarma plates. Sadly, Penn Kebab does not bring back those fond memories that I had. Penn Kebab is located pretty conveniently close to campus, right near the corner of Shortidge and College. This place is pretty much a grab and go kind of spot, as there is no place to eat inside or outside the "restaurant." For $7, you will get a gyro wrap. It's stuffed with the typical things that you'd fine in a gyro, but everything in this wrap is bland as hell. There is barely any flavor, and the meat is just flat out dry. I tried to give this place a shot on another occasion, but yet again, it proved to be dry and just not that tasty. On the plus side, they do make their own bread, made to order. Sadly, the bread alone cannot save a dying meal. Penn Kabab is definitely not for me. For $7, you can just get a much better meal in State College. The portions here aren't large, so if you want some better gyro wraps and kebab, go to Pita Cabana. read more

I went there the first day they opened and said "hello, you guys are new?" The owner, clearly fresh off the boat, said "no, we are from Turkey. We are muslim." I asked him how he liked state college. He said "cash only today." Other than the broken english, the kebab wraps are quite good. They make the dough right in front of you and it tastes authentic. I don't go to Penn State, so my friend I was visiting recommended this place for us to go to following a night of revelry. The line was long, usually a good sign. Thank God we waited. My other friend got a regular Jimmy John's sub from around the corner (can't complain really, that's our 3am power move), but the wraps here were really good. There's a good selection of meats available, and the toppings were varied too. The employees that work here seem nice too, not sure what the other reviewers are referring to. Usually they have really nice employees but there is this one guy who seems a bit grumpy and brusque. Might just be a cultural difference though. But the portions and flavours are good. I always get enough with the kebab plates that I can get two lunches out of it! Just a few things that brought this down to 3 stars: -Half the time I go there before noon, the place is closed. No sign or anything explaining why. Their posted hours list 11am as the opening time. -The pide dough is more sweet than savoury compared to other pides I've had outside of State College. -They microwave certain things like the bulgur in plastic bowls - not sure if they're microwaveable/food safe. -They use store bought Wish-bone Italian dressing in the kebab plate side salad which is a shame since they make just about everything else from scratch. read more

I love this place! Is a very tiny place. Do not go expecting to seat with a group of people because thats not possible. But you can order a "wrap" in fresh just made arabic pita bread!! As someone who has spent years in Berlin, Germany (arguably the döner kebap capital of the world), I was glad to find a kebap place in State College. Unfortunately, it was quite the disappointment. For $7, you get a chicken or beef wrap (no lamb or veal!). The chicken I had was chewy and bland. The lack of spicy or garlic sauce doesn't help. My wrap was cold, perhaps because the chicken didn't come fresh off a skewer, but was drowned in yoghurt sauce. Parsley lovers unlike me will also miss the tabouleh and other herbs. Bring me a real döner kebap, with the real bread, chilli, garlic and whatever sauce, and fresh meat. Until then, I'll go next door to Big Bowl. read more

I first had doner kebab when I was in Germany and I thought it was the best thing ever. When I came home I assumed that I wouldn't find good kebab unless I went to a major city. When I transferred up to University Park I tried both Pita Cabana and Penn Kebab. Of the two, Penn Kebab reminded me most of the kind of late night awesomeness that I ate while in Freiburg. Penn Kebab gives you a variety of options, but I always just go for the beef kebab. It's always the same guys working at Penn Kebab, and they're always really nice. They don't have a problem giving me extra toppings, and I love the fact that they use fresh dough every time they make a sandwich, which set them apart from Pita Cabana. At $7 for a beef kebab, I get a meal that's filling, and I also get to experience something a whole lot more genuine than the Chipotle down the street. I normally take my kebab to go, but there's a tiny area inside where you can eat, or picnic tables outside. Definitely a place to try, and if you're like me, a place to go back to again and again. read more

Tried it for the first time. Ordered a beef kebab plate with fries and salad to go. Guy who accepted my payment was super friendly. Serving size was great, probably busted my calorie count for the week. The beef was flavourful and tender. The fries were crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. It took the guy less than 3 minutes to get my order ready. I live nearby so by the time I got home my food was still warm. So going back there for more grub. If you haven't tried it and have been giving it some thought, you definitely should just go for it. read more

This is my favorite place to go on a late night in State College. My favorite thing to get is the Beef Kebab, thin slices of beef cut off a roast turning on a spit served in a freshly made wrap. The wrap is delicious and holds together well, the meat is flavorful, the lettuce is crisp, and the yogurt sauce is plentiful. I would like to see a spicy sauce or some lamb, but it's still good for what it is. To me, the best part is that they're open late on the weekends. Compared to Canyon, or some other late night joint, this is the obvious choice. I find that the $7 kebab is enough to share with one other person, and you can eat it easily while walking. read more

Went around 11 on a Saturday night for a lil snacky snacky. Was pleasantly surprised with the deliciously moist falafel. It had the right texture and taste! So my review will be quick. As others have done a better job describing the place and food. If you went to this place under the old ownership you will be happy with the change. The old place was good, but this is much better. I know nothing about this type of food. Though I lived on this type of food when I was in Europe and am pretty sure I have tasted the full range of quality. But I still could not tell you how to pronounce the names of many of the items. I would always randomly pick something out and normally enjoy it, this is street food at its finest. But I will say they make the bread for your wrap to order, it makes the wraps great. The beef had been good and the felafel has also been good. My only warning is if you don't like raw onions, speak up when they are making your wrap. They use them and a lot of them. I love them so, good for me. The staff have always been super nice and friendly. The price is fair considering the ingredients are a nice quality and they are on a main street in town. It is not a dollar slice of pizza, but you will actually get a meal worth remembering. read more

The best and quickest walk-up delicacy that state college has to offer. Their halal meat is the best I've had in the area (not that they have many competitors) and the seasoning and toppings create a heaven in your mouth. No matter who is working, the quality remains the same. Some of the hardest working cooks and understanding guys I've met, as my accent is horrid when pronouncing their options.
