We went for Valentine's Day and I did not realize it was a fixed menu but should have guessed as many places do for this holiday and others. I chose the butternut soup for the appetizer as did my wife. For the entree I chose the steak with mashed potatoes and my wife chose the sea bass. Both were good but not great. Both our entrees and the soup was served warm versus hot so that was a little disappointing. For dessert we tried the lavender lemon gateau and it was very nice and light. What was disappointing was the server. He was pleasant but not attentive and the restaurant was definitely not busy at the time we were there. We asked for the heater to be turned on and waited for over 15 minutes while we were getting colder. I had to go inside and ask someone else to get it going as well as bringing my wife's wine. While we did say we could wait a bit to order he did not come by as often as he should have and we had flag him down to get our order in. The couple next to us that we started chatting with were also disappointed as they asked for a martini with cheese stuffed olives and it arrived with olives with pimento which she was allergic to. He never said they did not have the right olives and she noticed it and did not eat them but chastised the server for the mistake and he said he knew they were out but neglected to tell them. He seemed slow overall and combined with poor timing and warm versus hot food we were unimpressed and will not be returning. It is a shame as the resort is quite nice and this puts a damper on the overall experience. I hope they read this and make adjustments to raise the bar. read more

The last time was this weekend. Ordered soup and salad. Wedge salad was good. Soup arrived with a thick SKIN on it. I asked the server to wait so i could taste it. Cold. Sent it back...replaced with hot but tasted like a pork gravy with canned clams thrown in. Lots of ham and bacon? Soup was billed as New England style but i don't believe any cream was involved. My partner's salmon looked like a chicken leg, it was so overcooked and dry. The waitress was very nice but constantly trying to upsell ("glass of wine? How about a bottle?" "Coffee? Shall we add some Bailey's?" Etc). Service was slow on drinks (20 minute wait for a cocktail). Then i felt ill all night from the soup as it just sat heavily on my stomach. We ate here a few times for breakfast and once for dinner while staying at the Boulders resort. Overall many odd experiences. Experience 1: called to make dinner reservations the day of and was told "we can fit you in if you come down now (5p) but we fill up quickly." I asked, "does that mean you don't have any availability later this evening?" Was told "no, we fill up quickly." My girlfriend called back 5 mins later and made an 8p reservation. Experience 2: dinner that night began with our waiter explaining that masks don't prevent the spread of a virus. Okay, thanks for that info and the fact you probably don't wear a mask in your free time yet you're serving me. Experience 3: dinner that night about 10 minutes into our entree..."do you plan any dessert tonight?" I said, "we're not really sure - we'd like to finish entree and decide." Ten minutes later he asked "any ideas about dessert?" We quickly realized they were closing at 9p and he was trying to move us along. So we ordered dessert, paid our $178 bill and left looking at each other as if to ask "whose idea was it to eat here?" Experience 4: breakfast every time. Waited and waited for staff to recognize us at host stand. Waited for tables to be cleaned. Waited for check. Lots of waiting but fortunately we had the time. Just disappointing when breakfast is $75-100. Restaurant people, please listen. I have empathy for how Covid has impacted you. However, if you are short staffed and cannot live up to the level of service you want your brand, ambiance, food, staff, etc to communicate, do not open. We had a late lunch here after a round of golf and breakfast. A decent golf course restaurant. If you are staying at the Boulders Resort, they send a cart to pick you up from your room and take you to the restaurant. They do seem to get really busy for brunch, so do boom your reservations on Open Table if you are planning on visiting. Ambience: The outdoor patio is gorgeous, with views of the 18th holes for both the North and South course. The interior is a higher end club house feel.  Food: We had the Yard Bird which had crispy chicken and buffalo sauce and the cobb salad which was a generous serving. Definitely hit the spot after 18 holes! We returned the next day for breakfast. As Hilton Diamond members, we had a free continental breakfast that comes with a choice of a yogurt parfait or fruit, with a pastry item, coffee and juice. The yogurt parfait had yogurt, granola and fresh berries. We got the cranberry nut muffins, which was good (but would've been nice if it was warm or if our butter was not rock hard). Fantastic meal! I am so confused by the negative reviews of this place. My husband and I just had an amazing dinner, with a gorgeous view, and super nice wait staff. I think the salmon is one of the best dishes I've ever had. The skin was crisped to perfection with forbidden rice that had a yummy light sauce with it. The veggies were beautiful and tasty. There were so many elements of this dish that came together beautifully. I wish I had a picture to share. I felt like i was at a 5 star restaurant. The only complaint was my dish was not piping hot when it came to the table, but I got over that with the first bite. My husband had the chicken and pumpkin pie and loved every bite. Just no. These guys need a restructure. 30-45 minutes to take orders, 50-70 minutes to serve meals, this is from our table and the ones we could see nearby. One diner suggested they were trying to get us to order more drinks. My steak was clearly partially cooked, then re-fired before serving, yet it still was cold. Like actually colder than ambient temp, which was 104. They ignored our request to serve the kid's meal first. They forgot an order. They insisted on correcting that mistake by comping us a dessert, which kept our party there another half an hour. Nearly a three hour long ordeal. I hate to run a 1-star burn like this on a place, but they deserve it. Staff was present but not accounted for. I never saw more than one dude in the kitchen at any time. I understand it's a hot day, but you can't all just hang out in the walk-in with 5-6 hungry tables. It's got a lovely view of the green if you dig that. There was nothing wrong with the ingredients, and while portions were small they were within tolerances. But for ~$100 a person, this place needs to straighten up and fly right. read more

The surrounding atmosphere is absolutely BREATHING. The Boulders has to be one of the very top resorts in the metro Phoenix area for atmosphere. The Grill at the Boulder's Resort is a casual American/Style restaurant that overlooks the golf course. On our visit they were only using the bar area so our view was a golf shop. My review is only for lunch based on one lunch time visit. Without boring you with all the details of the sandwich platters we had I can summarize that both sandwiches really were good. Both were made of nicely seasoned prepared in house meats and both were served on quality fresh breads. At this point we are at four stars for the sandwiches. A few knit-picky things can be added but are not important at all. We just need to say the sandwiches themselves are solid and solid equals four stars. Blow me away with something and that's five stars. I felt the need to remove a star for the fries that come with the sandwiches. The fries were hot and fresh but were very similar in taste and texture to fast food fries. I go out often and have dined in many places. So when a sandwich is in the $15.00 price range I have an expectation of what the side might be like. House made chips or better fries with a house made pickle certainly would elevate the platter and help to match to platter to the wonderful amazing Boulder's Resort. Service was friendly and efficient. The Grill at the Boulders participates in the Scottsdale Preferred so if you have that card you can get one meal for free. 3.5 stars read more

I felt the need to post this review due to the fact that something has seriously changed at this establishment. I've eaten here 3 previous times and had great food, great service and a great ambiance. This time was beyond terrible. If you've never been there, it's pricey but not ridiculous. For example a filet is about $54, their seabass is about the same. Appetizers (very small portions) run between $18-$25 but it's The Boulders! All entrees are small and the bread has walnuts in it, which I find strange since some people are so allergic that just touching something that someone else touched that ate the bread could cause a reaction. Our party consisted of 9 people. It was my mother's birthday and my son and I arrived early to bring the cake. My dad made the reservations, 4 days prior, for our party of 9 and requested the patio. It was a Monday night so it was not real busy. I checked in with the hostess who saw our reservation and said, party of 7 and here's your table, inside right next to the hostess desk. I said no, it's for 9 and we specifically asked for outside. So, we had to wait for them to set up outside. Once seated the wind picked up and we saw 6 propane heaters and asked if we could have a couple. We were told they only have 1 that works. 4 of us had wine, some red and some white. They brought out wine glasses that looked like something Denny's would use, super tacky and tons of water spots. When ordering, my sister is a strict carnivore eater, meaning meat, salt and butter, no veggies or sauce at all. She was extremely specific with the waitress and told her to only put meat on her plate and any of the sides and sauces on a different plate as my 17 yo said he would eat them. When the food was ready, 7 of the 9 plates arrived and my sisters had shallots and a tomato on the plate and a Demi-glaze on the ribeye. She explained again what she asked for and they said they would fix it. Myself, my niece and my sister are all waiting for our food while the rest of the party is about 1/2 done with their food. They bring my sisters ribeye with nothing on the plate but still added the Demi-glaze and parsley on the steak. At this point, she just said forget it. I had the filet mignon. I ate about 1/2 as it was littered with chewy pieces that I had to keep removing from my mouth. I decided I would just bring the other half home for my dog. The sides that my sister requested on a separate plate came on 3 different plates. One plate had 3 asparagus spears, the 2nd plate had a tomato and a shallot on it and the 3rd plate with mashed potatoes that looked like a 3rd grader made them with huge pat of unmelted butter on top. During all of this another party of about 9 or 10 were seated on the patio and low and behold they set up a heater for them after telling us they only had 1 that worked. When dinner was served, 2 of the guests asked for another glass of wine, they didn't get their 2nd glass until they were finished with their meal. When the waitress was cleaning off the table I asked her to pack up my filet and my sister told her to throw the ribeye in that she never ate. After cake and presents we were wrapping up the night and I realized the waitress never brought me my doggie bag so I asked her about it and she said, oh yes, it's in the kitchen, I'll grab it. I got the box and noticed how hot it was so I looked inside and there was a ribeye and a piece of short rib. I thought she gave me someone else's doggie bag so I rushed to look for her so she could bring it to the right person. She said, oh no that's yours, we put the short rib from the table in there for your dog. I said, well, my son is the only one that had short ribs and he finished all of it. Then she admitted that they accidentally threw my filet away so they put some short rib in the box. I'm sorry, but when we paid for a filet and they threw it away they should have replaced it with a filet, not a cheaper piece of meat. The plate presentations were pathetic. I was actually embarrassed for the restaurant. In my younger years I was in the food service industry and I would have NEVER brought out some of those plates of food. It's like they just don't care any more. You expect a little more for a $600+ dinner. To be fair, those that got the Chilean seabass did enjoy their meal but as a wanna be chef myself, it's pretty hard to screw up Chilean seabass. I hope they get new management, a new chef and train their servers better. read more

But the prices on wine are definitely inflated. And we both ordered the salmon quinoa bowl. The salmon was not quality. It was an odd color and the flavor was not good. Neither of us ate more than 2 bites of it and the server looked at both plates and didn't ask about why it was uneaten. We were so hungry still we ordered chips and guac so we could have something to eat. They were kind enough to make us guacamole although it was not on the menu. But the chips tasted like old grease. As we were eating one of the servers dipped a towel in a bucket of water behind us and rang it out on the carpet as she walked toward a table to wash it off. It was a disaster....the turkey dinner was like a TV dinner, it was a rolled turkey which was difficult to cut with a knife. I had Sea-bass, which was a size of a plum and like fried. The filets of beef were very small but excellent. Service was ok . I did not want to embarrass my mother in law and complain at the time, but my husband suggested I call the manager the following day . Spoke to Clayton the manager and he really didn't seem interested in what I had to say. I've been here in the past and will not be returning. On my last recent visit I could see the menu had become very limited, service was incredibly slow (perhaps they are understaffed), and the worst part was the overpriced average food at best. Management doesn't seem to care most times as they were not to be seen. Most servers/bartenders seemed untrained and I even witnessed a server who was unable to open a bottle of wine for their guest. Personally, I will never visit this place again and the service was atrocious. If there was a zero star option I would pick that. The fall off of service from Waldorf Astoria to Columbia Sussex seems to have a very negative impact on the resort service and staff. read more

One Massive Disappointment. First of all, you must be at least 75 years of age to enter. Then, don't expect anything on the menu to actually look appetizing. It's difficult enough to get to and if you want to actually find a place for lunch you basically have to walk through a golf pro shop. I can't understand how this place has 4 stars. I sat down for some lunch and these sweaty old guys came over and sat in the chairs right across from my table and began removing their shoes and placing their feet on the table. The food and menu selection was incredibly disappointing, and all the tables were dirty. The Boulder's may be in a beautiful location, but clearly there is no respect for the location they have because the perfection of the surroundings is clearly not reflected within this "restaurant". We were resort guests with a group from my husbands company and planned to eat on the patio at The Grill our last night here. Bad decision! We called earlier and left a message to make reservations, no one ever called us back. So we showed up at 6. Barely anyone was there, yet they told us the patio was booked and we could not sit outside since we didn't have a reservation. However as we sat at our table inside, we heard multiple people come in and say they had no reservations and were seated on the patio immediately. Not only was this experience super disappointing, but so was the food. Bland. Our waiter only came back once when we were finished with our food. We would never go back here. read more

I came here for breakfast and sat near the fireplace in the bar. I ordered the Eggs Benedict and coffee. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the hollandaise sauce was very good- they even give you plenty to eat with the potatoes too. The Boulders Grill also has Stevia in the sugar dish- it's the first restaurant I have been to that offers Stevia an all natural sugar that is healthier than equal or sweet n low. I always carry my own so that was a highlight during my breakfast. The waitress was very attentive and friendly. I enjoyed my breakfast here. read more
