Gristmill bakery & deli is in Grass Valley, CA, on Highway 49 and Wolf Road. It is family owned and operated. The owner has been baking and running her own shop for over 30 years, she has been at the current location since 2018. Right when I stepped in, I sensed the downright hometown feels. Welcoming vibe from the staff. Like stepping into someone's kitchen dining room. Simple interior. I do not always get these vibes as a POC, especially in the less urban areas. Anyways, the case had pies, cookies, muffins, pastries, donuts, turnovers, macaroons, hot baked croissants, bagels, and whole breads. Ooohhh so much. All like so cute and yummy. I bought some cookies... peanut butter, chocolate chip, raspberry pillow, and death by chocolate. They were $1.25 each. Darn good pricing for the size. Anyways, they were all soft and yummy except the death by chocolate. That one was a tad past its prime, dry and stale. My fave was the raspberry pillow, it had a swirl of raspberry jam baked in. This place is just straight up charming in a way that it has a myriad of different baked goods and the folks that work there are nice and friendly. I haven't seen merengue cookies in a hot minute and it was a complete unexpected surprise to see some here. Also, apparently their fruit cake has a notorious reputation of being amazing but unfortunately I didn't get a chance to try some this time. I had their smokehouse sandwich in a croissant and their coffee and they were pretty good! Also bought some of their bake goods and they were delicious. I enjoy coming here. I come for the cookies, pies, donuts, pastries, muffins, and other treats (and the friendly faces behind the counter are great, too!). I also hear the cakes and dinner rolls are phenomenal (I can't wait to try them). We have always been satisfied when it comes to Gristmill sweets! My experience with their lunches isn't as exciting. I ordered lunch (to-go) several times, and all three experiences needed to be corrected. The first time I placed a (to-go) order, they forgot to include our chicken quesadilla - when we went back to pick it up, they missed the chicken in the quesadilla (we weren't going back a third time!). The second time I placed a (to-go) lunch order, they missed the request for no mustard in my BLT (insert sad face here). The last order placed was the $12.95 "More than a House Salad," which you would hope is not dull and bland. My salads need crunch and flavor, especially when indicated, "More than." Stopped by for the first time yesterday and didn't realize it was right before their closing time of 2:00 pm. The door was open and a very nice young man at the counter helped my daughter and I with a small order. Before we were able to finish ordering, the woman in there, likely the owner but I'm not sure, turned off the lights in the cafe. Here we are giving the young man our money and he gathering our items, in a cafe with the lights off. This woman was extremely disrespectful and her actions were disgustingly passive aggressive and unnecessary. All she had to do was say we're closed and we would have kindly taken our business elsewhere. We will never step foot in that place again. read more

Gristmill made us an incredible German chocolate cake for our birthday. The flavor was excellent with the traditional coconut frosting. It was such a moist cake that a couple of leftover pieces were still delicious a few days later. We had a party of 55 coming and their large cake fed us all. They wrote Happy Birthday on top in a lovely cursive and a contrasting color. The cake was ready when we had arranged for pick up with no hitches. read more

My wife ordered a carrot cake with pecans in stead of walnuts . She then called and asked for a larger cake a couple of days before pickup, the rude baker said that is was already made and frozen,no changes and that the pecans cost 5 time as much as walnuts. Like will then didn't they charge for that when it was ordered? This could have been overlooked but the cake was OK but not even as good as a cheaper Raleys cake.. So rude people bad cake. read more

Have been here many times usually for sandwiches to go along with sweet items like donuts and pies. The staff is pretty friendly and accommodating. Ingredients like tuna in the sandwiches for example are quite fresh and good, though some of the bread used is just ok. Burgers and other hot items are ok, nothing too great or bad. I found the cookies and donuts to be expensive and kind of small. The pies however are amazing! Highly recommend the pies...especially the Dutch crunch apple pie. Overall, a good place to get a decent meal that is healthier than your usual greasy pizza or pub food that is so common in the area. Our daughter takes private golf sessions at DarkHorse Golf Club in Auburn, CA. While she was taking one of her lessons, I decided to drive to a nearby bakery her instructor recommended. There isn't a large storefront sign that reads Gristmill. The signage above the store read 'Bakery and Deli' and it stands next door to a small grocery chain called Holiday Quality Foods. The workers there aren't exactly warm and fuzzy. They are kind of rough around the edges, but I kind of like that about the place! You can expect to find some GREAT baked goods and deli items though. On my first visit, I decided to have a strawberry cream cheese croissant. I figured I'd be able to tell if there are other baked goods are delicious based on how well they make their crossants. Oh my....I am SO going back to Gristmill. Their croissant was perfect with my hazelnut vanilla coffee! The decor inside isn't fancy. It's a pretty old place with a bunch of small tables and plastic patio chairs. Again, totally okay because it has that authentic bakery feel! Aside from deli and baked items, they also have a cold case for other desserts like tiramisu. I cannot wait to give other items a try! read more

As a kid growing up in South Suburban Chicago, every summer the local carnival would sell these round, flat, deep fried cinnamon doughy circles of pure joy called Elephant Ears (well, because they looked just like small elephant ears) and I looked forward to them every year. It had been 17 years since we moved out west, and before that it had been probably 20 years, (37 years total) since I had one. A couple years after Gristmill moved over to the shop they're currently in I decided to pop in for one of their awesome breakfast burritos. While waiting for the savory deliciousness I perused their glass cases filled with baked delights when I saw them! Could it possibly be?! Holy s**t! They were elephant ears!! I nearly burst into tears of joy! I bought a couple of what they call cinnamon crisps, and I was immediately transported to my childhood in the midwest. They are exactly the same (a little smaller, but just as wonderful)!! Next time you're there, buy one and taste pure joy! read more

There have been many days I have been in a sour mood...but after a visit to my hometown bakery with Kim and Ceylon (and Mama Mikki if she's in the front), I walk away feeling refreshed. Here is a bakery/deli that has been around, what, 20 plus years?? If you want "small town" at it's best, the "Grist" is the place to go. One thing I will tell you, know what the hell you want when it's busy!!! Now, if you want to taste perfection? Ask Kim to make you the Gristmill Scrambler (with sausage instead of ham). For lunch, order the Clubhouse on a croissant or the Grilled Chicken Salad (minus sprouts for me). Also, my preferred side is what I nicknamed "Squiggle Salad", a spiral pasta salad with italian dressing and veggies...awesome. The Girls at the Grist offer daily specials...like 10% off deli cuts on Mondays, or Upsize Thursdays on drinks. As well, Mikki is the "SOUP GODDESS". Her Yankee Potroast Soup and Wednesday Chili could make a grown man cry tears of joy! My son, Caleb, loves the homemade sourdough bread. If I walk in and ask Kim to make Caleb "Buttery Toast", she knows just what to do. If I am feeling grumpy and want to sit in the corner and read with my meal...no prob. And trading stories with the locals in regards to school, sports (especially sports), news etc. is a welcomed activity any time. Sweet little deli. But even more expensive then Bay Area eateries. Half sandwich and soup was 15 dollars with tax :/ no drink no extras. The donuts are basic and the pies are lovely looking. Tiramisu is yummy. No organic ingredients so can't figure out why it's so expensive no boar head meat or grass fed crowns cheese. Just costly monopoly because there isn't much in the area like this Day old pastries are a good deal Soups since I make my own soups at hime. They seem to have thickener in them like corn starch type ingredients. Cream puff whip cream is way too sweet whip needs less sugar maybe some updates on recipes or education on pastry cooking. Clean area. Ut definitely needs an improve the bakery recipes and change in texture on all their bakery dishes. The salads potato macaroni and pasta have relish for pickles and overdone noodles. This bakery did my wedding cake this weekend and it was perfect . After searching and searching local bakeries they were the most affordable and easy to work with. I had them box the cake for an 1.5 hour car ride and it not only arrived in perfect condition but it was delicious . I just had my husband pick up a couple of breakfast croissants after dropping our son off at magnolia. Every part of the sandwich was dry and over cooked including the partially charred croissant. The eggs were flavorless with no sign of salt or pepper. The bacon was rubbery and dry instead of crisp and fresh. Very disappointing to spend $16 on inedible food. Darn it and I was starving.
