Meh, don't go out of your way, while there isn't much in the lake of the pines area I still wouldn't go back. The place is outdated along with cheap plastic patio furniture chairs for their dining area. The food is ok, nothing great, nothing horrible. I've tried baked goods a few times from this bakery because there is nothing else close by and I always think "Maybe the baker was just having a bad day?" NO! The people who run the bakery are crabby and rude. The food tastes like the smell and it ALL tastes the same. Also, there is always a person with a gas powered leaf blower in the front of the bakery. The store is outdated but I can deal with that. I would rather drive to Safeway where at least the bakery people smile and are helpful. read more

I would much rather support a local bakery then go to a larger competitor for our birthday cakes but after the cake I received, I'll be going elsewhere! 12 small cupcakes, decorated with a motorcycle track, almost $40??? I was quoted $20-$25, still high but I'll do it to support locals, but that was ridiculous and totally wasted! I will not be recommending to my friends or family. And once more, when I voiced my dissatisfaction to the bakery, I was told it was my choice not to return. No apology or attempt to make me happy. What kind of service is that? read more

Great for breakfast or lunch. French bread is unbelievable and warm to the touch in the morning. Lots of coffee selections as well as made to order espresso drinks. I personally like the French Roast best. Watch the "cake show" on the large flat screen to see what kinds of gorgeous and creative cakes Mikki has made. The best part of her cakes is that they are not only beautiful, but are moist and taste amazing! I would know, she made my wedding cake. Everyone loved it so much there were no leftovers!! I would recommend their catering too! The owners really appreciate their customers and try to cultivate a family environment. I travel to Grass Valley every year for vacation and I always make a point to visit Gristmill and indulge in some sweet treats. PS: ask them about their frozen cookie bites (amazing on a hot day). read more

Go here mostly for the bakery and breakfast. Food and doughnuts are always good. Service is always friendly and fast. I bought a cake here for my sons birthday in December it was the chocolate lovers Boston Cake. Let me say this we are by no means cake lovers in this house we prefer ice cream but that cake was amazing and gone the next day. The best cake I have ever tasted. We will be back for the next birthday cake definitely and can't wait to try one of their other selections!!! read more

If anyone thinks this is a good establishment I'm not one of the them. These folks are always rude, I made the mistake ordering a breakfast at a cost of $12.00 and the portions were so small I had to eat again when I got to town. A great place to go..hands down! The service is friendly and always helpfull, the place is nice and drinks are great! The breakfast menu is very basic but great for the price. The drinks are all wonderful and I would recommend always trying something new. They have everything you can think of.. pies, cookies, doughnuts, ext. Gristmill has everything that a large coffee place has (including wifi) with a peaceful atmosphere and "we value you" attitude. This bakery is a little out of the way but trust me it is the honeycomb hideout! I'm not a fan of fudge but they have thee best fudge brownie I've ever had in life! The cookies melt in your mouth and they make one mean turkey bacon melt. The floor is intricately decorated but the best thing about this bakery is Mikki. I am a newlywed and she made my cake it was the softest freshest most beautiful cake! She came to set it up and even returned to tear it down. I sent email after email changing flavors and she was very patient and accomadating and I had a 9 tiered cake and each was a different flavor! I don't know how I found them but I'm glad I did! So I walked in one day and said that I needed a cake made in the shape of a dairy cow's belly complete with udders. They laughed and said "no problem". I was getting this cake for a desert auction for the Tahoe Cattlemen's Association. The cake looked amazing and it was the highest selling cake in the fundraiser!! I tried this place based on the lady recommending the Ortega chili sandwich cause I love green chilis... so the sandwich was actually very very tasty... the only problem was that it cost $9 and was TINY.... child size!! I could barely even see any green chilis on there, let alone taste them?!?! If I'm gonna pay $9 for a sandwich then I expect that sandwich to be FAT with ingredients to where I'm full when finished.... I felt that sandwich was half as big as it shoulda been. read more

I really do like Holiday Market where the service is friendly and the inventory beautifully stocked.

We ordered a 1/4 graduation sheet cake, cookies, Dutch crunch rolls and roll up appetizers. It was ready on time and the food, excellent. But the cake was fabulous! Texture and moisture good, icing and filling not overly sweet, and the decorations were outstanding. There were nearly 30 of us on a 100 degree day. Everyone had some, there were no half eaten pieces to toss. All gone. You know that that is a good cake! read more

Dang the staff are hard work! Its not being cheerful that keeps them in business. But the cakes are great. And the bread is better than anywhere else local so they have a fairly captive market. read more

I grew up in the bay area and have always had penchant for Peter's Bakery burned almond cake. Now living in Roseville I've been lucky to have a family member bring me one for birthdays but this year that didn't happen. Knowing this, my wife began the search for burned almond in or around the Roseville area. She said there is a wedding cake place in Sac that charges an arm and a leg and then Gristmill's. Not sure about the other place but I have to say that Gristmill's has made me a fan. To the extent that I had to go back and order another burned almond cake for my wife's birthday the following month. My only gripe is that this place is way out in the boondocks, at least for me, coming from Roseville. But let me tell you, you won't be disappointed. The quality, look, smell, and taste of this cake is unmatched and the price... Gristmill's is the bomb and I'll be going here for all my birthday cakes from now on. read more

Great bakery and deli!! We order birthday cakes for friends there regularly. They are always fresh and delicious! My favorite is the white cake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream frosting. I have lived in the area and have known the family that runs this business for years. lol, as they are usually very busy they do tend to be a bit rough around the edges true. The cakes and pastries are the best n the area. love the scones. They also have a small area to cook some simple breakfast foods as well as hot sandwiches for lunch. Can easily accommodate groups of four unannounced, and the ham n cheese croissants are goooood! read more

I give this place a two only because the bakery goods and other menu items are delicious. The atmosphere is the problem one does not feel welcome nor is the order taker friendly. I spoke with the owner about it trying to see if this might help out with the empty tables and chairs and she seemed nice and open to suggestions. Then it gets interesting, the next day after having a nice conservation with the owner the owner's sister who also runs the placed asked me not to come back as I had dared to point out that I didn't feel welcome there and that perhaps this could change. Instead of listening to the customer she blamed the customer. So sad to see the empty chairs and tables but with this attitude it is no wonder. Starbucks is down the street and they make people feel so welcome that there is standing room only most of the time. I thought I would try a local place out however Starbucks is much friendlier. I will deal with the crowd.
