We are in town for a tragic event and needed lunch. I suggested we try here as we are vegan and finding food can be challenging. The gal we met working here was so helpful. She pointed out and discussed our choices. We got bagels with hummus and a BIG bowl of black bean chili. The chili tasted noticeably made by the bakery. The beans didn't seem canned, because they had a nice bite and texture. The chili tastes like something I'd make at home...cause we're vegan of course we make a lot of black bean chili. The bagels really hit the spot to fill out our meal. They had lots of tables inside and out to sit at. It's a bus your own table situation, so we did need to wipe down our table. All and all very pleased will keep this as future option when we need food. read more

Stopped in this cute little shop on the way to Tahoe. The vibe is everything you want from a cozy mountain town: kitschy coffee/tea items, handwritten signs, super-friendly service, locals sharing stories & hanging out...plus, it's dog-friendly!! The only thing missing is flavor. Now, take to heart I am a masala chai nerd, I don't do coffee, so I can't speak on that. But for the chai, I was excited to learn they brew their own in-house blend of "spicy chai" concentrate!! Typically, this turns out amazeballs at joints like this, but in this case it was more of a house "bland" than blend of chai :( There was no spice in their "spicy." I mean this was tamer than white-girl salsa. The chai was basically lightly sweetened black tea and that saddened me to no end cause I really wanted to love this place. Seeing as how they are a bakery and all, I also picked up my fav cookies: snickerdoodle and ginger snap. Again, I am there for the spice, I want it to punch my tastebuds in the face with every bite. But what I got was average, everyday cookies I'd expect Janice to buy at save mart and toss in the office potluck, still in the plastic container. So they say you can't go home again but visiting The Flour Garden bakery is definitely like coming home. A Grass Valley staple since 1981, I spent many hours drinking coffee and studying here. This is a locals favorite and you will see regulars hanging out, drinking coffee, enjoying organic, delicious pastry, and just relaxing. The small bakery gets busy so you may expect a wait. I ordered the blended Chai Frappe and the barista made too much so I got a large for the price of a medium, which was sweet mistake. I also had the Butterscotch Oatmeal cookie and the Everything Bagel with cream cheese. I usually have to order extra cream cheese but the amount on my bagel was perfect. They also have a lunch menu with sandwiches, salads, and daily soups. If you are in Grass Valley, CA and looking for a quick pick me up, definitely try here. read more

This place is located in the Brunswick basin in Grass Valley. There are many shops here...super Safeway...CVS...etc. This is a local hangout with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Pet friendly! I got a small iced mocha...6.50...a bit pricey for the size. They have a large selection of treats...cookies, pies and a ton of sandwiches and cold items to go. They pride themselves in using organic ingredients which I love! They make good organic soups as well. They also have a day old area to buy items at a lesser price. You can order a specialty drink or just get a regular coffee to go (self serve). They also sell a ton of different mugs to choose from. Several different breads for purchase as well. I have met my friends here before...we can have a cup of coffee and bring our dogs! They do get really busy after mid morning ..just FYI. Its very clean inside and employees seem to be happy. I initially wrote this in a funny way, but I don't want to downplay the gravity of the message. Someone got a cake here for my birthday and asked to make sure that it was suitable for someone with a potentially life-threatening coconut allergy. They promised her it was and I assumed that it would be safe. Because why would you risk another human being's life and safety, in order to sell a cake? The icing is literally a brick of coconut oil and sugar. It tastes awful, but more importantly, who does that? These people gave me anaphylaxis for my birthday. Why? Does coconut oil not count as coconut to y'all? If something has peanut oil, do you tell people that it is safe for a person with peanut allergies? How do you work with food and not know better than to do this to someone? I used an epipen and glucocorticoids, but this is still super painful to deal with. I'm so flabbergasted. The customer service here has improved with employees that are better as compared to some years passed. Unfortunately, not sure how and why, the recipes for the soups...once excellent appear to be changing....maybe a different chef?? or somewhat has canned the recipe...and now, they a couple I have had are not even good. Mike's Turkey Chili was a real favorite of mind but it has been destroyed at least for me...too much tomato sauce it appears...maybe something else. I bought a frozen contained of soup, Clam Chowder and it was really bad, the potatoes not throughly cooked, the clam meat chewy and few little. Otherwise....I find the prices too high for me...and normally come in once a week to buy some excellent Tibetan bread although the other breads are below average...mostly. Coffee is good and it the ambience is nice especially because, finally, they have turned off the music or turned it down...as a hearing impaired person...loud music in eating places...have become all the rage (one reason why I refuse to go into Starbucks because they will not even turn it down there and the customer service is often quite weak due to poor training and a lot of turnover.... read more

Why not update the spacious and airy Flour Garden in Grass Valley to 4 stars? I probably should. This place has withstood the test of time, having discovered it when a person would go into a coffeehouse to avail themselves of the internet while in transit and when we only had cell phones as opposed to smartphones. The fee was nominal to do so and it was always an opportunity to eat baked goods, have a cup of tea, and, given this area and its personality, do some peoplewatching. Just like a lot of places that cut hair have the word "shear" incorporated into their nifty business name, the Flour Garden capitalizes on "flour power" with their name. There are quite a few people who probably really pushed the "flower power" mantra living in this area, and possibly patronizing this store. If you don't believe me, scan the parking lot and see how you can reliably spot a Subaru or two or three. They have various stores - three, I believe - so they have mastered about 22 miles of the Grass Valley Highway. While Nevada City and Grass Valley are certainly interesting to visit, what's very nice about the transition from I-80 to this small cluster of towns is how oak studded terrain gives way to pine studded terrain. And this is proof that I don't like conformists because you can love trees yet not be particularly fond of "tree huggers." I like the choices the Flour Garden offers - many baked goods, bagels, sandwiches, soups, hot drinks, bottled drinks, and then some. They also have a discounted shelf where you can pick up some baked goods that aren't as fresh and save some coin. Most things here aren't stellar since this is a humble, down home bakery and not a fancy French or Italian one. The prices are accordingly more reasonable and, keeping that in mind, one will be a happy camper with their purchase, which I recommend eating in. The bohemian vibe is more present in adjacent Nevada City than in Grass Valley, but the people who have sold me baked goods and a hot drink here over the years have reliably been polite, and sometimes sort of wholesome. The service runs from about a 3.5 to a 4 at the Flour Garden. (I've gotten attitude from Nevada City types in their way cool stores before, but never at the Flour Garden, nor in Grass Valley.) I like that the Flour Garden can fill you up while you're visiting or traveling. (It can also fill you up if you live in the area!) At this point, I should wrap this up and, in synch with the various tropes I like so much, find a way to give this locale its 4 stars. I think I will go with these 4 words: Looking - for - Lola - Granola The above is probably easier to do in Nevada City, but it's also doable in Grass Valley. Grass Valley Lola's budget might be a little tighter. This place, the Flour Garden at the Brunswick Rd. exit off CA 49, has been consistent, thus I recommend it. read more

I've only been here a few times to order pies for special occasions. I'm a disabled senior and it's not always convenient to have to drive in to place an order. Their website makes it appear that you can order online but that's just a smoke screen. After reading the dozens of poor reviews I'm wondering how much longer they can keep the doors open! Mixed emotions. Let me explain...let's start with the positive: ABSOLUTELY THE BEST ALMOND CROISSANT IN THE WORLD! Well maybe I got lucky today or maybe they have a new baker that knows what they are doing but the pastry I got today made me reevaluate my negative opinion of this bakery. Now the negative...and please take note: $4.25 for a black coffee...are you kidding me!!! If anyone wonders why they aren't millionaires by the time they are 50 it's places like this that are robbing you of your financial future. Now that being said, if you want to treat yourself, by all means go ahead but buyer beware. Last time I was here I got a muffin and it was absolutely the worst pastry I've ever had at a real bakery. Maybe an off day for the baker? Maybe a staff transition? Possible, as I see employment openings here often. Finally, I used to be a baker at a small family german bakery and at Vons bakery in Santa Barbara in the 80's so I know pastries. All I can say to the owners is that consistency is key to retaining customers, as well as quality (obviosly) no matter the price. However, you must be realistic about prices. $5.75 for an amazing almond croissant is fine because even Solvang bakeries can't do it better. However, $4.25 for a black coffee is making you transparent that you are practicing price gouging. I have so many fond memories of this place throughout the years from walking downtown with my best friend and splitting a flour garden blast or grabbing a chai tea latte before going next door to get pedicures with my Momma... or grabbing a quick bagel and coffee before church on Sundays with my family. That's why I'm so adamant about coming back but the last handful of times, I've had nothing but somewhat negative experiences in more ways than one. Sometimes, I just feel as if I'm bothering the employees by just being a normal customer. It's almost like they seem to forget that without us, they're not getting paid. I understand sometimes customers are rude, sometimes people have bad days and sometimes managers aren't always the best leaders because negativity can be very contagious! (& from what I've heard, the management style here isn't focused on customer service). I've read some of the responses the owner has responded to the not so positive reviews on here and it's honestly disheartening because as I'm writing this, I know it's not going to be taken as an opportunity to get some real, genuine feedback so that they may increase their profits by gaining customer retention; but it'll be taken as if I'm just some selfish customer looking to solely complain. Trust me, I am not. Anyways, today I ordered a simple bagel toasted with butter... and I sat there puzzled by the fact that it was completely black. Burnt to a crisp and yet the employees thought that was okay? I worked at a bagel shop and I can guarantee you that it is not! This is the 3rd time it has happened in the last year too. Maybe the toaster needs recalibrating? But you know another way to avoid it? Pushing the bagel further back in the rotating toaster so it doesn't go as long or maybe just turning the temp down! or buy a crappy little toaster and use that until you can get yours adjusted. Or maybe just warn people about it and ask if they'd even still want it toasted. Or maybe just train your staff to not be such entitled, lazy little a**holes who don't care and will make sure you know of it when you express concern. I'm sure they're just tired of having their mistakes pointed out and that's why they're reluctant to fix the problem. In my opinion, they're being overpaid for the lowest level of customer service ($19-$25hourly) and we're being overcharged for it. Figure it out flour garden. I grew up in two successful family businesses and even when my father was going through chemo and dealing with the worst or the worst customers, he ALWAYS put them first & made sure they had no idea how frustrated he was with their nonsense. That's what you do; if you want a successful business and upstanding reputation... you always put the customer first! (Unless it's abusive behavior but then you still gotta act professional about it and not stoop down to their level). I say all this because I literally just spent an hour reading everyone's reviews and felt it was needed because like many others, I'm truly sad that this place just gives me pure anxiety when it used to be one of my safe places. ps. I was too embarrassed to attempt to eat it inside because I knew I'd be tearing it to shreds finding any edible part in the middle. & I was about to ask for a new one at the counter but as soon as I made eye contact with the girl that handed it to me, she walked away and I knew it would be pointless because I have terrible anxiety and don't do well when people are blatantly disrespectful; which is the only service I've received the last two times this happened... read more

One person working the counter... once it was it was my turn... The woman actually moved to an adjacent counter and asked the man behind me what he wanted.. Helping locals 1st... okay.... The bread this bakery makes is to die for! I purchased the Asiago onion loaf and it was amazing! The reason for three stars is because I also purchased two muffins and some sugar cookies and both were moldy the next day after purchase. I would have hoped to have enjoyed these but I think they must have been a little too old to sale to get mold the next morning! The staff go out of their way to be compassionate to those with special needs. The manager personally took food out to a man that was homeless whom I expressed concern about. A Shift Supervisor spent a great deal of time talking to a gentleman with special needs that wanted to socialize. These people care. read more

THIS Flour Garden location is definitely better than the Neal Street location. It is cleaner, and more intentionally constituted for customer enjoyment. Pretty sure the food is the same, so it's to the ownerships credit that they have mastered consistency, but the employees at this location are typically more pleasant and efficient. I love their vegan soup options, and that they keep frozen soups available to take home. I do wish there were more vegan options - sandwiches, hot food, etc., but until then we always enjoy their bagels with hummus, cucumbers, and tomatoes. They also have a lot of non-mammary milk options, so it's a great place for coffee and coffee blends, and their smoothies are amazing! I've never posted a review but I felt the need to say something. Today (5/10) around 11:30am, I was in line to order a coffee and there was an elderly woman ordering ahead of me. The cashier seemed very irritated while taking the woman's order, but it escalated to her being completely enraged when the elderly woman was confused with the new card readers. The woman seemed to be taking her card out too early.(?) The cashier said a few very demeaning statements like "can you just let me do my job" and other similar things. The cashier eventually threw her hands up and said she needed to walk away from the situation, and another staff member stepped in to finish the transaction, no problem. I was horrified. I was even more disappointed when I got a glance at the rude cashier's name tag. Aurora, MANAGER!!! As a manager you can't handle taking the order of a confused elderly woman? And then proceed to talk loudly and make snarky comments about the woman for everyone to hear? I really hope the owners see this and address the problem, as I have seen other reviews complaining about the manager's attitude as well. read more

My bagel and lox was yum and organic cookies were soft and chewy with that good old-fashioned taste. So satisfying! It was super-convenient after getting my eyes examined at Chan Family Optometry, which was only 6 minutes away and also a pleasant experience (who knew getting your eyes examined could be a pleasant experience--see my review written separately.) Casual, quaint spot to meet up and have a leisurely sit-down meal or snack but lots of people were getting to-go. The lunch hour was pretty slammed so go earlier if you don't like to wait. My order was missing an item and they refunded me without any attitude. Will be back again. I noticed the negative reviews on here and they didn't have a fly problem when I was there. I don't think they charge more than anywhere else these days. Especially since it's organic! I live in LA and you should see how much we pay here for organic baked goods. Great food and drinks but way overpriced. I mean I get that inflation is a thing but cmon. I mean 5$ for a small americano? They upped the price of a juice by 4$, from 10$ to 14$. This place has really deteriorated. Bathroom is often closed in morning with sign saying not in order. I asked about this Tuesday morning after being ignored as a customer for a few minutes. No 'good morning' and when I asked about the bathroom, no eye contact, just a 'yes' regarding the closing. No explanation. In other words, not friendly at all, in fact, darn rude. Yesterday, I ordered and they put the bagel in a bag and left it on the counter but it was not a take-out. I had been there several previous days in a row and they definitely knew who I was. In the mornings, typically when I was there, a group of men, workers, sit around often talking loudly, one of them swearing profusely, using the F word. This morning, a different group of young men, started with five, then 8, talking very loudly, no effort to lower voices. Not the place for a quiet cup of coffee. The good news? They used to play music loudly and that appears to be effectively terminated. The attitudes of workers seem poor. A very pathetic experience this week there. I am looking for another place to go such as Starbucks, McDonalds, others near downtown GV or the Briarpatch. Food is expensive here but that is true most places. Service, as I said, decidedly weak at best. Ambiance, 'bah!'. Probably best to come in late morning as it appears to be a morning hang-out for young working type men. read more

I ordered a German Chicolate Cake for my huspands birthday in advance. It was a beautiful cake. But it was inedible. It weighed like 10 pounds! The icing was granular like it wasn't cooked. There was so much frosting and it overwhelmed the cake. We wish we had taken it back, but had to leave town and had no time. I wish we had gotten a good cake. We wanted to like this place! Very rude "manager". I got a blueberry muffin that had no berries. Took it back in to show her. Yes, i got a replacement, however, I pointed to a specific muffin that obviously had berries. They have gone massively downhill. Rumor has it the place has fallen on hard financial times, which is why their danishes and pastries are now up to $4.75! I'm not paying$5 for a croissant, are you kidding me? They used to have my favorite bagels but I went there recently and I swear to God it was a day old bagel they sold me as fresh. I've bought their bags of bagels to go, and recognized the day-old staleness from when I would toast them at home. A month ago, my step-mom was visiting and went to get a scone and she said the girl was very avoidant when she asked if they were made fresh that morning. She didn't finish eating her scone, either. It's sad, this could be a great local institution, but they aren't keeping up with whatever internal dysfunction is going on. I give them a one because negative results are not possible on this platform. I just got off the phone with Sarah-who frankly thinks it's ok to insult someone's intelligence. The drinks are undrinkable and frankly disgusting. The lox bagel was good except why would you put already decaying sprouts on a hot bagel as a normal menu situation knowing that they degrade so quickly.
